just want to know what is a tom tom?
What is tom tom
Latest technology in car navigation Mobile, pda & all-in-one solutions.
You will never loose your way on the road if you use it
I suppose you have heard of a system called GPS which is
Global Positioning System, basically tom tom is one of the best systems available.
It work this way there’s 12 / 16 or 20 satellites orbiting the earth all sending a same signal to your GPS receiver therefore defining your actual position and showing you how to get from point A to point B.
Hope that will help.
It's also a type of drum.

Hi guys, I just got my XDA Mini S yesterday and LOVE it!.. I was just wondering though, if I install Tom Tom on it will it cost me money on gprs or whatever it uses when calculating a route? I'm pretty new to all this gps and pda phones etc..
thanks!
No, no extra charges, all free.
To install TomTom you have to buy the software and by a GPS receiver. They are the only 2 costs.
The routes are calculated by the software from the maps that you have bought from TomTom and there are no data charges.
Enjoy.
hi thanks for the lightning quick replies. By a GPS receiver do you mean my actual phone??
Your phone will run the TomTom software, but you need something that talks to the GPS satellites, this is the GPS device. This tell the TomTom software where in the world you are by tracking satellites.
Check out this site for a introduction to GPS..... http://www.howstuffworks.com/gps.htm
As the for GPS device you have to buy, I use a Holux GPSlim 236..... http://www.holux-uk.com/Products/gpslim236/index.shtml.
You can pick these up on many websites and Ebay.
Hope the info helps
Hi Guys,
This is probably a stupid question but here goes anyway....
Is there any cost to me for using Tom Tom via GPS with my Trinity?
I have not used a satnav enabled device before so I would like to be aware of any charges. I have my Trinity on a Pay As You Go simcard because it is my second phone. I have noticed that my balance seems to have almost dissapeared after installing Tom Tom and Google Maps.
Also, when I start the Tom Tom software I notice that the Bluetooth flashing led flashes, is this denoting that I am connecting to the internet via Bluetooth or is that just a load of bollocks?
So if I use my Trinity just as a GPS device with Tom Tom will it cost me anything?
Cheers!!
tomtom os pobably looking for a bluetooth gps receiver

Ehh.. yeah... it is a stupid question... but never mind we all have those:
If you are citizen of the USA you already paid the costs of the satellites with you taxes, if you are not, its for free (well the Battery of you Trinity will loose some Energy and TomTom is quite a expensive piece of software, but that wasnt your question, right?)
The satellites send signals, they dont "know" that you receive them, nobody can or wants to send you a bill... it free... isn't that great?
The only cost I can see is that you probably downloaded the Google maps through GPRS and that might not be free. In Sweden it's really expensive.

GPS is free, Google maps is not! When you access Google maps you are using the internet to download maps causing a huge data download bill. Get a standalone software like TomTom and you won't incur any data charges.
The only possible cost is if you use the Tomtom Traffic option, this would typically cost £5 per month for the GPRS data usage.
Thanks for your replies,
I know now that it was a stupid question, but one that I wanted the answer on and didn't know.
Is there a satnav program like Tom Tom that gives you the satellite picture view like Google maps and not just the map view that Tom Tom does?
Probably another stupid question but what the hell......
I have a t-mobile mda vario, i have tom tom running but my speedo on tom tom and the sdeepo on the dash do not read the same, the dash will read eg, 30mph but tom tom will read 23mph, how can it be 7 mph out???
which do i go with, the car is 12 years old could the car speedo be wrong???
Well, Most of cars' (new or old) dashboard speedometers are not accurate. That's because the car system calculates speed by rotation of wheels. But There are many of factors to consider such as tires condition , tires size and road condition which cause speed of a car. And also even if all readings are correct, there might be slight error on displaying speed on the dashboard (if it's not a digital speedometer)
But GPS calcurates the speed of the car by coord. of a car at the point A to B divides by the time it takes (simple algebra). So it is very accurate.
Simply this:
Your dash is wrong.
GPS is correct. If anything, GPS might be off by 1 or 2 mph, but it's still going to be much more accurate then your dashboard.
Vehicle speedometers are notoriously inaccurate.

Does anyone know or is it possable that the MDA is capable of running a GPS? I tried to put TOM TOM on it, but it kept saying can't find any maps. Has anyone had any luck in trying to put one on thier device?
I have a bluetooth GPS receiver and have TOM TOM on a storage card and it runs great. The maps cost money and you can manage them through the TOM TOM home application on your pc.
I have IGo installed and use an Asus BT GPS receiver, works fine.

Most people use Bluetooth GPS receivers for this kind of thing. The wizard does not have a GPS radio in it though, so you have to use an external GPS receiver.
If you're willing to sacrifice accuracy and automation for step-by-step directions that you manually step through, try Google Maps. In addition to being a very good (and very FREE) mapping tool, it can do radio triangulation so, if you're utterly lost, it can at least show you where you are within about 2000 meters. Much better than nothing at all.
I got lost once on the way to an acquaintance's house, and used Gmaps. By typing in the street address where I was lost at, and the desired destination, it got me back on track in a real hurry. Indispensable for those without funds for GPS receivers.
Hi i have a htc touch 2, i installed tom tom navigator 7 that works very well, but it takes a long of time to capture gps signal and a low low signal, no bars!! The only gps configuration i find in tom tom is select device (internal gps), Quick Gps is updated, the configuration in External Gps is:
Gps data port: com4 (porta dati gps in italian)
Gps hardware port: Nothing (porta hardware Gps in italian)
Speed (baud): 4800
auto manage gps: yes (gestisci automaticamente gps in italian)
I hope in a big help and i have a question: how can i see if my internal gps works fine?
thanks guys........
ROM Version: 1.28.408.3
ROM data: 09/16/09
Radio Version: 3.49.25.05
Protocol Version: 61.42t.25.31H
italian
Tom tom: App version 7450 (9028)
Driver gps v1.20
I also found the gps settings in tom tom but i didn't find a way to receive an acceptable signal
Hello, usually the first time when you start using TomTom it can take a while......the settings seem ok. How many satellites does it normally catch; 6 is low and it can go up to 14/15. Can you check this?
Have you tried a soft reset?
Hi Frank, thanks for your answer, tom tom catches 0 satellites, i don't know why I'm able to navigate regardless.
I read in xda that tom tom usually doesn't use very well internal gps without a software launched before who manage internal gps.... are you agree? Can u suggest me one of these software?
Ah, yes i tried a soft reset but nothing changed
:-(
Now i realize also google maps doesn't work, it's the first application who needs gps that i launched and it worked, now searching to solve my problem i noticed it doesn't work anymore.............. :-(
Hi sebaseba78,
I have de same problem that you, if you can find a solution, please say to me at: [email protected].
Thanks!!
I have same issue with previous version of tom tom 7. But installing TT7 Black theme without bluetooth work fine.
Obviously in a building has never tried any GPS device (from tom tom go and ending with the HTC and the gps marine my father). Even if the signal was low with the version you use, thanks all'agps should engage quickly. If you see the correct location on the map is not worrying phenomenon. It works equally well.
Search in this forum version of tomtom black theme without bluetooth (reactivation map needed)
hi there I have the same problem with GARMIN mobile xt and NAVITEL navigator there is no satellite signals (0 satellites) note that it was working very well before, I hope there is a solution for this problem but when i made a soft reset the problem was solved
