Dopod 900 is very very slow with 5000 contacts - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Does anyone experience this? I have tried it with several Dopod and same thing happens, Too slow that it's almost unusable.
with contacts <1000 this problem didn't happen. Dopod 900 runs fast.

RE
Hi!
Have you tried using XCPUScalar/PHM and other speed tips on your registry to help to speed up your device?
BTW, what is the size of 5000 contacts ie. how many KB or MB? You can check by going to 'My Device' and look for a pim.vol file and see its size.

My Contact folder has 1.140 items, my PIM-file = 6.944K,
I am sure there is more then only the contacts in there,
probably all the Calender Items as well.
The speed is still acceptable unless You switch to "View by Company", be prepared there for long waiting times.
(Cannot say about 5000 contacts.)

PHM and XCPUscalar? which one is better for Dopod 900? What are the most stable settings I could use?
Thank you again.

RE
Hi Ruud Westerhout,
If I'm not wrong the pim.vol file has tasks, appointments and contacts. You can have few thousand contacts but I doubt you have few thousand tasks or appointments. So you can largely say that the pim.vol file consists mainly of contacts.
Hi jlingo,
PHM vs XCPUScalar
I've tried both on my QTEK9000 and both got its own sets of problems
At the moment PHM (v3.15.000) is not certified as WM5 compatible but it runs well. However, if you also have MagicButton or HandySwitcher installed then you can face the problem of the PHM icon appearing on the running tasks which means if you click the Close or Close All button then PHM will be terminated even if its listed on the 'Ignore or Make Alive List'.
As for XCPUScalar v2.93 it also runs pretty well but can be affected by OPERA browser in that the speed, soft reset and power off icons can sometime dsiappear from the screen when surfing the net when you've external battery power connected to your PPC.
I prefer XCPUScalar because its easier to do the speed settings and also comes with the soft reset and power off buttons (PHM do not have) otherwise you'll have to install separate program (another source of software compatibility) for the soft reset and power off features. It also does not exhibit the problem PHM faced with MagicButton or HandySwitcher.
Just to complete the picture on MagicButton and HandySwitcher. Both suffer the same problem that sometimes the phone application icon will appear on the running tasks. If you Close it or use the Close All button then phone dialing will be terminated ie you cannot dial out from the contact list.

HI FOSA,
is it currently safe to try XCPUScalar on Dopod 900 at this stage. From what I'm reading, it's buggy and unstable for most HTC Universals?

RE
jlingo,
I'm using XCPUScalar v2.93 on my QTEK9000. Besides the problem with OPERA program when surfing the net I say its pretty stable.
You can try it on your Dopod 900 and if its unstable you can remove it.
BTW, have you found out the file size of your pim.vol?

RE
jlingo,
So far the most stable max. speed with PHM or XCPUScalar is still at 624MHz. Any speed above that will render your PPC unstable

PIM.vol 3mb
but I only have program memory 3Mb left. It seems like with 5000contacts, it eats up soo much program memory.

RE
jlingo,
I guess you must have many programs loaded otherwise you would not have ONLY 3MB of program memory left
Actually, you can see how much program memory the pim.vol uses by first moving out the pim.vol file with the 5000 contacts.
Do a soft reset and check the default balanced program memory.
The difference between these two is the amount of program memory that the 5000 contacts occupy
Try it and see for yourself

When I first hard reset, I got about 31Mb Program Memory, and then I do an activesync with 5000 contacts in it. and Viola! I was left with 3Mb of program memory.
I have confirmed this incident with my other friend who owns Dopod 900 and has business contacts over 5000 as well. It happened the same, Dopod 900 became very slow and lagging.

I have also tried in 818 PRO with 5000 contacts and it's just crawling. And worst yet it kept on locking up.

5000 contacts would roughly translate to about 25 Mb.
Anyways, 5000 contacts would cause the device to crawl on ANY platform, be it Windows, Palm, Symbian etc etc. Which device were you using prior to this and did it manage with the 5000 contacts well?
UD.

I was using XDA IIs, It was doing very well without a problem at all, no slow down what so ever.

I'm not sure of your situation, but having 5000 contacts sounds kinda excessive, do you absolutely need to have all those on your person at all times? If you're using outlook, why not split your contacts between the ones you actively use (and have those synced with the phone) and the ones you just need for reference?

Yes I could do that. that's what I'm doing now. the problem is I used to be able to use all 5000 contacts with XDA IIs. These contacts are data of my customers which I find useful when I'm on the road. It's a shame a really. I used to be able to carry all these information in my Pocket.

MDA II closing programms after some ideltime

Hi,
I'm a new MDA II owner (since yesterday) and already ran into some weird problems.
One prob is: the MDA II is closing open programms after some idletime in the backround. That means, if you e.g. open pocketinformant, and put it into backround (as an Icon in tray) and you wait some secs (about 30-60), the pocketinformant just pops away. Also with some other programms: Totalcommander, XCPUScalar, almost every programm with icon is being shut down by the MDA II (or some garbagetool).
If you hold them in focus, the resist.
It doens't matter if you are activesynced or not...
Tools like smallmenue or wisbaradv or pocket controller are not shut down.
Any idea?
Sincerely
Dejan
Common,
you're the XDA-Developers, whoelse as you might now, which tweak in the registry, which .dll or whatelse leads this device to handle open programm in such a bad manner.
How can I make the device not closing some programms? Does anybody knows a tool, which prevents other tools from being closed?
Anybody?
128mb and still 94% free RAM, because the device closes the software as soon as it goes in the backround....

Yeah seen the same problem here, no way to fix it yet.

Sounds like you're running low on program memory, if thats the case
your device is doing what its suppose to do! Open a few programs and then check your memory and see.

Not in my case, over 80Mb free...
@qman
well, this should be the normal way, IF I run into some memory trouble.
But, my Autostart/Startup is quite filled up with the default programms, which are being loaded by system to handle alle the little goodies form the PE AND which are being installed by default during first initialisation after hardreset.
Dispite that, I only load two other programms while booting: smenue and wisbaradvance (not worth being counted as memoryconsumer). Still have 94% of programm memory free, (or about 65MBRam. So If I load PI4, I might use some 100kb/s, and than PWord, which uses some more 100Kb/s. Ok. I still might have about 90-92% of programm ram free (aprox. 62-63MB, I cannot get the right value, because the MDA just closes the PI4 :x )
So the routine might do the right thing, but in wrong time and toooooo conservative.
BTW, this effect is also shown up on a fresh hardreseted device, just load pie and pword amd pexcel, you will see, how PIE is just vanished....

BTW Does anybody know some dudes at MS Developing stuff (esp. Windows Mobile 2003 Phoe Edition)? In my eyes, this is one ofe these:
1. The memorycoresettings are copied from earlier days, while the devices only had 16-32 mb memory.
2. Is a bug.
Big Bug in memorhandling for open programms
Big bug in memoryhanding for open programms
I've posted following message to the microsoft.public.pocketps.phone_edition newsgroup with hope, that any of the Microsoft developer would read it, and post an reply:
to "Microsoft Mobile Stuff"
please confirm following bug:
The new Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition (at least german edition, might also be at english one) has a big bug at the memoryhandling routine, which handles the closing of open programms to keep programm-memory free.
Situtation: if you load programms and get over 16mb of used memory for programms at the shared memory pool of your device, the device (here especially MDA/XDA II) starts closing programms until it gets under 16 mb again, it doesn't matter, if your device has 128 Mb free, or you moved the slider at memory configuration to the left, so the programm memory is > 80 MB)
If you load enough load-and-stay-resident programms (traytools, menue extensions, desktop enhancments e.g. wisbar, smenue, pocket controler, aso.) to keep more than 16 mb used, you cannot load any further programms, because the device reports insufficant memory for execution. You can only use the loaded tools.
If you remove all \windows\startup entries and boot clean, you can load all the programms, which are being closed before, without any problems, the programms stay in memory for hours....
luck, the telephontool is somekind hardwired, so it functions even if other programms are quit with memoryerrors...
If this value of 16mb is not being set up into registry, than it is a hardcoded bug.
Anyway
Please check this out, especially an foreign language Mobile 2003 OS, and provide an bugfix fast, because with 16mb of usable programm-memory, you hardly can use your PE in a professional fashion!
Sincerely
a frustrated PE user.

You can check this effect just load programms and look at your memory consumption. It (MDA) should close all programms until you get under 16 megs again, if it cannot, because of resident programms, you will get insufficant memory errors.

Is this a hardware problem or an issue with the ROM on HTC Himalaya Phone Edition devices? Or is it a problem with Windows Mobile 2003 Phone Edition?
I mean... Will/Can this be fixed through a software/firmware update?
From the Microsoft Newsgroup:
Windows Mobile 2003 supports only 33 Processes at a time!
After a normal start the XDA II has over 26 running processes, so removing the Flash-Programs and every not needed app in Autostart is a good idea!

Memory loss :-/

Can somebody tell me why, over a couple of days of normal use, my memory drops from 17MB free for programs to about 2MB free, even though I have stopped all applications?
The only way to get it back is to do a soft reset.
If it didn't do this, I could probably live quite happily without mucking about with a big ROM or whatever.
DaveH
By the sounds of things you need a program that actually CLOSES programs. Normally WM2003 will just minimise when you hit the X button, making them quicker to open next time, but it means you have heaps of programs open at once, taking away from the ram.
SPB Pocket Plus, Wisbar Advance and a few freeware programs will take care of this problem for ya. I have Wisbar and only ever soft reset if a program crashes and locks the thing up which isn't very often at all (perhaps once a fortnight or maybe a little more often than that.)

I also have SPB Pocketplus, but that doesn't solve the problem. After a soft reset I have about 21 Mb of program storage. After running programs like Contacts, the Phone, Calender and closing them (really closing them!) I have about 18 Mb left. I heard this is a common problem with 2002/2003/2003SE. So in my opinion the only solution is to softreset your PDA every few days...
You can use tools like Memmaid to view your running processes. There you can see that, after closing your applications, some (always running) processes have grown bigger!
memory loss
i have the similar problem under universal wm2005, my available memory slowly reduces or doesnt fully recover after each interaction, until it winds down to a slow machine, a soft reset fixes, but still frustrating that it has to be done. I have SPB 3.0, and it still occurs.
Sounds like thereś a program installed on your devices that has a memory leak. I´ve had my phone going without a soft reset for well over a week now and I have 29.1mb left as program memory. When I soft reset I start out with 29.8mb.

According to the amount of threads I've read about this subject I think your device is quite unique. Is phone the only application you are using? Anyway, cherish your device! (I'm not cynical...)
memory loss
even though u guys close all ur apps there r some hidden task running which takes the memory i had cexperience in which there was task manager if u see properly u will get lots of program taking up all ur memory in that u can even end task those programs
memory loss
Any actual task managers that can be located for WM2005 so that I shut down some of the running tasks would be great, any ideas on:
1. A good product to use
2. Which are "good" tasks which must be kept and which are "bad" tasks which can be shut down?
My phone's not unique in any way. I used to have the same problem for the first few months of having my phone. I then did the big storage hack, cleared up everything in main memory that wasn't need, the usual memory enhancing stuff discussed on the forum.
Now I'm really tight as to what programs stay on my phone. Anything takes away from the memory and it's gone unless it's an essential app. Not one thing is stored to main memory and these programs are what I have installed:
Wisbar Advance (latest release)
Wisbar Advance Desktop (0.7 Beta)
Resco File Explorer 5.13
psShutdownXP
Pocket Artist (trial, getting rid of it soon)
Pocket Earth (waste of space, getting rid of it)
Who wants to be a Millionaire
Ziogolf 2
PDAwin Spot
Tennis Addict
Virtual Pool Mobile
Flux Challenge
Everything except the Wisbar apps are on the sotrage card, wisbar apps are in storage. Nothing on main memory at all, even deleted the photo templates!
Like I said, I used to have memory leaks and from what I could tell at the time SPB Pocket Plus 2.5 was the main culprit for me, dunno what version 3 is like. Voice command is also a killer.

You mean, you installed all these programs on Storage Card of Storage? How did you do that?
As most programs will automatically install in Program Files in main storage...
try sktools for some hardcore cleaning up.

When you run the install program on your PC, it will ask if you want to install them in the default location. Say "No", and select the storage card as the location.
However, some programs won't work on a storage card (especially memory managers, Today plug-ins, etc). If you are installing from a CAB file directly on your PDA, it will automatically install to main memory. There are applications to fix cab files, but I have never tried them.
HI!
I was facing the same problem. My memory would go down from 22 MB to about 9 MB and once I did a soft reset it would again go up to 22 MB. I realised that the culprit was Battery Pack Pro v. 2.0. I had Battery Pack Pro v. 1.1.1 installed on my Mini and it was absolutley fine but the problem started only when I upgraded to BPP v. 2.0. I communicated with the developers of BPP - OmegaOne but they couldnt offer a solution so they refunded the money I had paid for it. Since the time I have downgraded to BPP v. 1.1.1 the Mini is working fine and no memory leak whatsoever.
I don't have BPP but I do have the following: Maybe we could find a common link to all the machines with memory leakage,
Dinarsoft MemMaid
Spb Weather (was Marsware Weatherpanel but lost even MORE memory)
TCPMP (shouldn't be that as I hardly ever use it)
Richard L. Owens FILEASFL
vCard send and receive
CDL Orange customisation
.NET pocket framework
Pocket Blox Aqua Calc
Spb Stardock Weather skin
Hudson Mobile Phone Dashboard
Spb GPRS monitor
Spb Full Screen Keyboard
ZingMagic Backgammon
Climbwalls JB Piano (not used much)
Tom Tom 3
TomTom GPS
CheckPOInt
Any thought on those apps?

Program Memory 2MB???????????????

I have no idea what is going on with my Exec and have to keep resetting it all the time to get back the program memory which drops to between 2 and 3mb frequently even when there are no programmes running. Is this normal?
Here is what I have installed on my Exec:
Batter Bar
Program Bar
Pocket Breeze
All the above on the Today Screen.
Besides, I have Net Front
Resco File Explorer and thats pretty much it.
Last night, when surfing with Net Front, I got the error, not enough memory to open programme and then Net front shut down. I checked, the program memory was down to 2.3mb. Closed all the open programmes (only text messages and calender were open) and also went to task manager and closed all running programmes.
Thereafter, the Progam memory went up to 3mb.
But that is where it stayed unfortunately till I ultimately had to reset it and it came back to about 16mb. After texting a little and also opening my appointments, it was down again to 10mb.
I am kind of frustrated actually..... is this expected of the Exec? On my XDA II, I always had in excess of about 50Mb available and maybe that is why it is twice as fast as the universal.
PLEASE HELP......WHAT CAN I DO? THANKS ALL.
Cheers, Vikas.
PS: Spent the last two days searching for any solution on these boards visavis old posts but didnt find out how to and hence this request.
I really really appreciate all those who can help out and thank you all in anticipation.
there isnt a solution, your screwed....
Some "options" for you to consider:
soft reset regularly to get it back
use 02 corporate not the mickey mouse retail version (I use imate)
beware of all "additional" fat that the device comes with by default
read these forums in detail (about 1 month), the sticky at the beginning of the universal forum by craigie4craigie is a really really good start though highly detailed
watch out for what you sychronise, one person had a 12 megabyte PIM file for calendars and contacts. mine was 5meg due to all the calendars, so I stopped syncing all calendards and wound it back to 1meg by doing only the last two weeks.
check your emails, mms, and text files, keep em clean and clear. if syncing emails, only sync the headers or 5kb, dont do attachments.
your today screen additions are always resource hungry, and suck memory. my SPB Pocket Plus, with Weather, and Diary sucks about 8meg (28 startup without anything to 20meg), and slowly dwindles down to 10meg when I soft reset.
As it likes to cache the entire website, I did find one circumstance where for some reason the website was absoloutely massive, with pictures, giffs, fonts etc, and this zapped my memory from 20meg to 3meg. When it closed, it went back upto 12meg.
A couple of files on this site are being tested to kill unused apps memory resources, which is slightly effective.
You really want to try and keep your boot up memory to about 20meg, and it will drop to about 10meg during a days heavy usage.
Consider getting rid off:
Batter Bar
Program Bar
I have heard elsewhere that the Batter Bar in particular wasnt good for the device. As I have never really heard of either and have read lots in these forums for a year or so, then its not a good thing that I dont know of them. Maybe somebody else here could correct it.
Generally, reliable applications that you can use are SPB, Resco, and SBSH each have their own pros and cons. SPB can slow it down also, but it isnt that extensive, and if I find I really need the speed, I just disable it from the today screen, I am beta testing the newer release at the moment.
Activesync left sync'ing all day can easily kill 10meg of my memory over the whole day.
Also, what is actually in your startups, not just the today screen. With my imate, there was about 4 on install, and I got rid of all of them entirely.
There are so many tweaks, hacks, and improvements, and modifications that can be done.
Firstly though, ensure you are in corporate mode from what I have ready about the 02 version.
Seriously think about the hard reset, then be really choosely about what you install, and to where. Test each extensively after each install.
Anyway, thats enough for the moment, let me know your opionions....
So basically I'm screwed.... dont know if I like the sound of that but am sure that is the truth.
Oh well. Simon, would like to say how much I appreciate your reply and your taking the time to write all this down, that is indeed very nice of you and thanks again for this.
Regarding your message:
1. Yup will keep resetting especially after syncing (at work my Exec is always syncing/charging so guess need to reset once a day)
2. Yup using Corporate mode and not the ghastly slow O2 active desktop
3. Read and followed the Sticky post regarding tips and tricks for the Exec, installed Pocket Mechanic and did a registry cleanup along with deleting most notifications.
4. Synced my contacts/calender etc, about 4.5 Megs
5. Sms's I delete regularly so not more thatn 30 at one time. Emails are usually deleted and hardly any on the Exec.
6. Guess my batter pack and programme bar along with pocket breeze must be using up the RAM as when I soft reset, have about 18 to 19 MB free at that point which dwindles down to about 10 mb during the course of the day. If using Active Sync and then NetFront or Opera, this goes down to about 2/3MB
7. Sorry about battery bar, but meant battery pack pro (gosh I sould like such a dolt). I should get rid of it? Along with Programme Bar? What is a good alternative? SPB POcket Plus?
8. Not much else on the Today screen, just the Battery Pack Pro, Programme Bar & Pocket Breeze thats it.
Will try out your suggestion of doing a Hard Reset and loading again selective programmes, guess I need to figure out which ones even though I like the ones I have on right now. What do you think?
Once again, can't tell you how much I appreciate your taking the time and effort to help out. Thanks a ton.
Cheers, Vikas.

THEN CHOOSE EACH ONE SEPERATELY FOR THE DAY TO SEE THE IMPACT.
ACTIVESYNC IS SUCKING THE GUTS OUT OF IT.
Resco explorer comes with a free today programme plugin, which is memory efficient.
SPB PP will do journal bar and programme features in one, but has more memory overheads.
never used pocket breeze, but lots do abd isn't likely to be the cause of memory issue.
There is large volumes of info on this forum on memory loss, and most are anticipating a major ROM update to fix.... maybe hopefully, we'll see.
You can try use Memmaid of Dinarsoft to get a list of programs running in RAM and how much of the ram they are consuming, just to get an idea of which particular program is consuming the most ram.
Heres the pocketgear shortcut:
http://www.pocketgear.com/downloads.asp?product_id=14279&prodname=MemMaid (supports WM5) 1.5
Hope this helps you to find out what memory problems you have.
First of Simon, Thanks a lot once again.
Second, sorry for the late reply but was trying out your suggestions which I have to say are invaluable.
Did a Hard Reset a couple of days ago.
Loaded back on some programmes that I really require:
At start with no sync, nothing, Free Ram is 33 mb
I then synced with the computer after loading SOTI Pocket Professional
Total Pim size: 4.5Mb
Free ram at this stage: 25mb
Then loaded on the following:
Rescoe File Explorer along with Resco Today add on
Pocket Breeze (maybe I should look for an alternative?)
Memaid
Net Front 3.3
Memory at this stage is now 22mb or so after a soft reset.
Now really missed the program bar (from Battery pack pro) so installed the Magic Button (Great programme) and PsShutXp.
Total ram now after all this, about 22mb after soft reset, normal usage, with contacts, calender, text messages open, about 18mb.
Guess I can live with this. Maybe removing battery pack pro was the solution.
Of course, the moment I connect to active sync (its on active syn the whole time I'm at the office), the ram goes down to 9mb. Guess that really sucks memory.
Now, maybe I also need to get rid of Pocket Breeze and install some other s/w to replicate it but without too much loss of RAM.
Thanks to you Simon, started using the Resco Today Plug in which I am sure hardly uses much ram. And is not bad at all.
Didnt use pocket plus as most report memory issues with it.
Certainly hope that the new ROM fixes these memory leak problems. Thanks a lot again. The Exec is now faster than before but its sad that they would make this device without enough memory or with issues such as this. The XDAII never had any such problems and to be honest, I still miss it.
Cheers, Vikas.

never used pocket breeze, but lots do abd isn't likely to be the cause of memory issue.
There is large volumes of info on this forum on memory loss, and most are anticipating a major ROM update to fix.... maybe hopefully, we'll see.

Dear Jorgee,
Many thanks for your email and took your advice and downloaded and installed Memaid. It does do the job of cleaning up the Exec well and am going to stick with this one. Thanks again.
Cheers, Vikas.

Hope this helps you to find out what memory problems you have.

gwes.exe just keeps growing

hi
I use MemMaid and the running process that uses the most memory is "gwes.exe".
the problem is ,that the amount of memory it uses just keeps growing, rising on a daily basis .I've found that a soft reset brings it right down again  ,but then it starts to rise once more .
Does anyone have a similar problem?
Is there any way of bringing down its memory use without soft reset?

same to me. 10MB was the size of it. killing it makes the device freeze
don't kill gwes, it is a system process, stands for Graphics, Windowing and Events Subsystem.
i dunno why you get the memory leak, i don't. i always thought spb pocketplus is the culprit, but someone just claimed he had no leaks while using spb+. but give this a try if you happen to use it...
Same here and that is not just with gwes but with many other system files, but gwes is of course the biggest. Isn't this an issue with WM5?
I also use OxiosMemory and try to mitigate this by forcing the processes to release resources not in use, but that does not elimate this issue completely.

no, the explanation is not this simple. i run the same wm5 as you and i dont have this problem.
cmonex,
Can I ask you what apps you run? It might be the apps I am running that you do not run is causing the memory leak.

i leave these constantly running all the time:
magicbuttons
taskmgr v1.6 (from buzzdev)
uptime
also usually leave these running:
totalcommander
opera
messages (sms)
occasionally using:
iGO 2006
Netfront 3.3
PQZII
vijay's full terminal screen hack
ftpsrv
phm regedit
tre regedit
adobe acrobat
mobipocket
wmirc
softmaker textmaker (wow sucks why no real vga)
tcpmp 0.71
hope this helped what apps are you running?

Thanks for that. What I run is quite a few and some are same as yours. The biggest difference is that I run Wisbar Advance 2 and Wisbar Advance Desktop to skin the GUI.
The apps I am constantly running:
Wisbar Advance 2
Wisbar Advance Desktop
SEVEN (mobile push email)
ATOK (IME for Japanese language)
DefSIPChange (changes default SIP)
PQz
The apps I am running occasionally:
Backup and Restore
GSFinder
MemMaid
Oxios CloseApps
Oxios Hibernate
PHM RegEdit
JpegCapture
TCPMP
VeriChat
Warm Reboot
GB-SOFT Tweak
Pocket Tweak
I will have to check the ones I am constantly running to see if any of them is causing this problem but it could be the first two on the above list.
hi
I run:
contacts
calendar
comm manger
internet explorer
resco file explorer
MemMaid
games
These I run most of the time and I frequently have to switch them off in settings/system/memory in order to keep a reasonable amount of memory free
However gwes.exe never decreases
Can anyone see a link?

hummm i didnt list the builtin apps but what i use from them is contacts, comm manager, PIE (very rarely), messages (only for sms), word... (sometimes the other office stuff too) would use calendar too but i always forget to note my todos in it
+ and i forgot to list nPOP (for emails) and a screenshot maker (magic something)..
anyway what you run doesn't sound too bad, if you really use no today plugins.. i got no idea.. what ROM version do you run?
The growth is because it caches icons (start menu - programs - settings) to speed up the display. At least that's my best guess!!!
hi
rom version:1.30.107 wwe
I did a soft reset today and gwes.exe went down to 4.22MB
I then ran only the wifi (comm manager) and gwes rose to 4.35MB
I ran it again after switching it off in settings/system/memory and it rose to 4.78MB
when I switched it off again in settings/system/memory it came down to 4.56MB but its obviously where the leak is.,because I didn't run anything else.
the problem is how do I stop it?
Hi all there,
same problem with my german VPA IV (Vodafone) even after several ROM upgrades (Jasjar, qtec, new vodafone ger) no changes of this strange behavior
I really hope, there's anybody out there, who can help us with this annoying thing.
This gwes.exe issue is experienced with WM2003SE as well. I found this in one of the threads in Windows Mobile Team Blog.
"With WM2003SE, I had issues like GWES.exe growing until I ran out of RAM. So, I purchased WM5, hoping the repurposed strata flash and new OS would resolve the issues."
You can also refer to below for gwes.exe in detail.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...ui5/html/wce50conshellanduserinterface146.asp
Someone was saying earlier in this thread that gwes.exe caches icons. That might be true but may not be just icons and that explains why gwes.exe grows. Or, it might be that some apps you are running are causing memory leak but that is not easy to spot on.
A workaround to this I use and can recommend to anyone having this problem is Oxios Memory 1.40. It's free!
http://www.oxios.com/memory/
One of its apps is Oxios Hibernate. WM_HIBERNATE is a window message that is generated by the Windows operating system and sent to an application when system resources are running low. All applications should get the message and handle it by attempting to release as many resources as possible by unloading processes, destroying windows, or freeing up as much local storage as possible without damaging the internal state of the system.
I normally run this whenever the free memory space gets low like down to 15MB before my device gets unstable. I normally gain quite a bit by reducing the sizes of gwes.exe and all other processes running are occupying and that I don't have to reboot my device everyday. Check the size of gwes.exe with MemMaid before and after you run this and you will notice how effective it is.
thanks harryk1372,
Oxios Memory 1.40 is great and I managed to release 3MB of memory.
However none of it came off gwes.exe.
Just a matter of interest ,how many times should I use Oxios Hibernate?
Every time I press it,I get some memory back.

Maybe that gwes.exe did not have any resource to release at the point you ran Oxios Hibernate and it was already close to the bare bones. Try running Oxios CloseApps as well as Oxios Hibernate. CloseApps closes processes running in the background and that releases the memory used by those.
You do get some memory back by running Hibernate multiple times but the actual amount you get back is very small after the first run although the dialogue may say it is like 2 to 3MB released every time. I am not sure why this is but I think it is no use running it multiple times. Just run it once or twice a day when you find that the free memory is low.
As I wrote in the earlier post, Oxios Memory is just a workaround I found. It does not eliminate the problem completely and the memory resources used by the processes running will never go down to the level of right after the reboot of the device. I experienced that gwes.exe gradually grows in several days to the point when I need to reboot my device even with running Hibernate from time to time. It's just that I don't need to reboot it like everyday.
thanks harry
thank you very much
hey i had the same problem that is mentioned here....
i was running spb pocket plus when i noticed this....
now with ilauncher and spb diary i have around 25 mb at start up and hardly if any memory leak....
with ilauncher alone i have around 27.5 mb
also some software have been updated like pocket informant webis mail..my experience with them shows me that they have next to no memory leak...
what i have noticed is that applications which are not designed for wm5 have terrible leak....case in point....girders which i a game with simple graphics leaves me with only 9 mb when i exit the app...while with skyforce 1.22 (wm5) the leak is hardly 100-200kb
you could try htcAddicts:

it seems to be more powerful than Oxios

Slow Changing of Input Method?

Guys, I have a question.
I used to have an iPaq 6300 running WiMo 2003, when selecting input methods there is an arrow beside the input method you click on to bring up the menu that lets you choose between Keyboard, Block Recognizer, Transcriber or Letter Recognizer. This was instantaneous! The moment you press the arrow, the menu pops up and you can switch input methods instantly.
On my new Atom Exec though this is not the case. You have to press the input method icon first, which brings up the arrow, then click on the arrow, then wait like a minute before the menu pops up. What gives? Is this really how all WiMo5 devices work? Is this a problem with WiMo5 or with the Atom Exec in particular?
It is annoying because it makes it harder to switch between input methods. Could someone tell me the score on this?
Thanks,
My bad, I fiddled around with the Atom a bit more and fixed the problem by doing a Hard Reset. Now I set the PPC back up to how I like it and it's working flawlessly.
Hmm after some time the problem seems to be back. It looks like the phone bogs down with stuff after a while, causing this problem. I don't feel like reformatting, does anyone have a fix, or a program that cleans up and optimizes your PPC?
this is an issue of WM5.
It also happens to WM6. The more applications you installed, the slower it will get (not sure what kind of application though). Well, Atom Life has 1GB of ROM. Of course people will start installing a lot of applications.
Anyway, I read somewhere in the forum stating that if you have more than 10 today plugin installed, the SIP will take a some time to appear. The plugins don't necessary be active. I mean, the ones not active are also counted. I have not confirmed this yet though.
I have more than 40 programs installed in my atom. It didn't slow down that much (only 5 to 10%) but what I usually do is to backup everything first before I install anything. At the first sign of speed reduction or bugs, I just do a restore. I have more than 15 today plug-ins both active and inactive. However, one thing I noticed is that it is better if you install your non-essentials to your sd card. It doesn't matter if you do a hard reset, they will still be there and if you use a tray launcher or clauncher, you can configure the icons to reappear even if you do not re-install them. This way, you reduce the clutter in your main memory and at the same time save you the trouble of re-installing. The reconfiguration of the executable icon will take some time but it is still faster than re-installing 30+ programs. It is important though to maintain a storage of no less than 17MB. Once you go below this, you will really see the reduction in speed and will be pissed off with your PPC. By the way, do not use Opera or any modified IE (tab browsing and downloading. by the way, Opera is good with downloading but sucks in handling your PPC's memory) while doing something else with your PPC. It will really really slow down your PPC.
i posted this same thread sometime ago, but there was no solution. At last i discover the culprit. I see the difference in speed when i install Embedded Windows VB Runtimes. regardless whether i install it in the memory card or the main memory.
Got this info from another site, it really works.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
make WM5 SIP faster (加快輸入法) (not a joke)
X51V ENG A12 + Ce-Star 2.8R2A + Monster SIP + MS IME for JAP works well.
But I am not very sure "every WM5 PPC" works well, too.
After installing a lot of softwares, WM5 SIP becomes slow.
You can make it fast again.
1. install resco explorer 5.42 and resco registry at \Device
2. use resco registry to export the registry of
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID
to a file (like CLSID.reg) at PPC, or SD, or CF
donnot edit or modify CLSID.reg
3. use resco registry to delete CLSID
4. use resco explorer to execute CLSID.reg to import the registry CLSID back
5. turn off PPC, soft reset
It is amazing like magic.

Weird... it really works. Everything back to normal. Menu is displayed instantly after tapping on the list button.
I'm using Atom Life WM6, so this mean that it also works for WM6.
Urk Double Post
Aha! O2's proprietary software is a bunch of Today plugins! That may be the culprit. I noticed the a while later though after the O2 software was installed.
I have no perceptible slowdown on the Exec other than the input method switching. I just need to fix that!
My main memory is about 85% free (83.6MB) and yes I do install all the non-essentials to the SD card.
MightyOx I'll try your method hopefully this fixes this issue. While "upgrading" to WM5 I thought it would be a completely better experience, but I'm finding WM5 has issues and that quite a few things were done better in WM2K3 (like the SIP switching speed) or how about creating a new SMS message in WM2K3 you only needed 2 taps here in WM5 you need 3. *roll eyes* sometimes I wonder what developers are thinking when they take steps backwards like this.
On the other hand I love being able to rotate the screen, and Voice Command 1.6 was totally worth it.

It's not O2's software. It just happen to be the next software you've installed before the problem show itself. It can be any software. As I said in my previous post, it will happen after you've installed a certain number of software. I think it is WM5 and WM6 related.
Anyway, the workaround is already posted. So, I have no more complain about this problem.
Yeah, looks like it's not. I tried Mightyox's method, THANK YOU SIR my Atom is running fine again. It's like once you pile over some registry entries over the CLSID directory, it takes time to get it. So the solution is to delete the registry key and "re-enter" it so it goes back on top. Very strange but if it works then more power.
Tried it on my flame...Wow...works like a charm
