I plan a route on my magician using tt5.1, say for example from newmarket to manchester. When i run demo mode on tomtom to see my way, after a few minutes, tomtom will just swith off. I have not yet tried on an actual trip as Im waiting for replacement of my faulty blutoothe reciever.
I thought it was a software incompatibility but i have no softwares installed on my magician yet. I also thought it was due to my simcard so i removed it while running tomtom. I have also tested using 2 different SD cards, 1GB and 256MB. Same problem.
Has someone experienced this problem?
Please help as I am going on a long drive next weekend.
From memory I think that if you're not connected to a GPS receiver your PDA will just shut down the screen if there's no user input within the time set in your power settings.
It's nothing to do with not being connected to a GPS receiver; you can use the Demo in TT without one.
The problem is more than likely related to the 'POIs'. Initially, to test if it is this, turn them off in Tom Tom settings and run the demo again. If it is the problem then goes to the FTP:
ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/SatNav/Tomtom/
... and download the Patch POI TTN5.zip. This should resolve the issue.
sh500
im already logged in but i cant access the link... it says 530 Permission Denied.
Please repost the link.
In the mean time I will try to turn off the POIs.
Cheers
Once you get the access denied message, keep the FTP window open behind it. Then go to 'File' menu and select 'Login As..' Type in 'xda' (in small letters) for both the username and password; this should get you in.
Using the Windows FTP, you sometimes have to re-type in the username and password to get access.

got it mate!
in the meantime, i disabled POIs and Im running tt5 for about 10minutes now without interruption.
thank you very much for your help!
one last question please for the sake of curiosity... how do i apply the patch ?
Yep- no problem.
Credit goes to those who originally resolved this issue.
yep! but for the sake of curiosity, how do i apply the patch?
It's a while since I applied the patch but I believe you copy all the files from the zip to the '2577' on the Storage Card (or whatever it's called) and just execute the 'ttn' cab file from the PDA.
cheers mate!
I have tried both techniqs and they both work, so ill stick to just disabling the POIs.
thanks again

I personally find POIs very useful- especially if used in conjunction with the freely available CheckPOInt software:

I installed TomTom, but the icon never appeared and I couldn't get it to run .... so I uninstalled it which seemed to work fine, but Windows is now giving me a notification error at regular intervals 'cannot execute /windows/ttgpseng.exe'. It looks like a TomTom related thing. Do I need to delete something from the registry?
Thanks
Mike
You need to reinstall the gps part of tomtom, I have noticed that when installing tomtom and carrying out an upgrade the gps module does not unzip and shows as a cab file on the pda. Install the latest 2.09 gps and allow it to overwrite the existing files, it should then hopefully work.
I think I'd rather just remove it completely ..... do you know how I can get rid of this last trace of it
Mike
Navigate to windows/startup and delete from there, then navigate to window/startmenu/programs and delete from there. If you are having problems with tomtom let me know and I may be able to help, this problem sometimes occur when you are applying the patch so you dont have to keep applying to tomtom for a re registration code every time you change pda's.
I tried to find how to reply to you direct, but couldn't, so sorry to the rest of you guys who must be getting bored with this......
I've checked those locations and there doesn't seem to be anything that looks like it's related to TomTom. I think something in Windows is calling this ttgpseng.exe file, and not finding it because the unisntall removed it ( but not the reference to it). I decided not to use TOmTom partly because I've discovered www.pocketfms.com which is more suited to my microlighting and there's only so much room for maps.
Thanks
Mike
You'll need to get dbView http://www.ipaqsoft.net/php/trackclick.php?link=http://www.pocketpcsoft.net/zips/dbview.zip&id=299 and remove the entry in the DB_notification_events
I've not searched the whole thing but I'm pretty sure it's the only one.
Questions for those with TomTom successfully on a Wizard....
1. How? The CDs won't load! The application CD blows up immediately when you run the setup application - it never even attempts to talk to ActiveSync. Can't load the code this way!
2. The first Map CD fails also with an "premature end of JPEG file" error message (WTF?!) If I use the SECOND Map CD, I can load maps. Kinda. They will load to my PC (tell it I have a "Go", then when it errors out tell it to load to a directory) which I think I can then copy over. Maybe.....
3. Having seen someone else's setup, I'm wondering something - can you plan a route that spans more than one map? It didn't look like it! That sucks SEVERELY for long trips.....
Thanks in advance....
Can't help on 1 & 2, but I have heard of people getting bad CD's and getting them replaced by TomTOm fixes their issues. I've been fortunate to get everything working perfectly the first time.
To answer #3, yes you can plan a route that spans several states. You need to either load one of the regional maps or the 'Major Roads and Highways' map.

I've opened a ticket with them - I've heard their support is legendarily BAD (as in no replies at all in some cases), so we'll see. If I have two bad CDs, then if they replace them all's well.
But right now what I have is a worthless piece of software that cost me $150 - and I am NOT happy about that..... I guess the only good point is that I can't even activate it, so if its a Wizard incompatability probelm I can stick it on eBAY and the code is still good....
Here's the part of the solution....
Wizard = WM5.
You can't use the default loader on the CDs to install the program to a WM5 device.
Solution. Go to TomTom's website. Go to support and download the latest patch (version 5.21). Here's a link that sure work:
http://www.tomtom.com/support/solution.php?GID=3&PID=188&SID=198&CID=0&Language=1&FID=3361
Run the program on your PC (not your wizard) and install on your wizard once you've established an ActiveSync Connection.
Now. You'll need to get a voice file off the CD. Put in the first disk (i.e Disk number 1) and look for a directory called voice (I think). An easier way may be to search the CD for a file named USAM.cab. This is the voice for "Richard". You can experiment with different voices later. Copy this file to your PPC (i.e. right-click on the file, click "copy", then right-click on the activesync icon (while connected)-> click "explore". Find the directory you want to paste it to (it doesn't really matter) and right click and click "paste".) Now the file is on your PPC.
From your PPC File Explorer (not windows), click on the USAM.cab to install the file. We're almost finished.
Now simply install the map that you want.
No you can't navigate between regions; however, if you select the "Other Map" you see a couple of national maps.
had the same problem like Genesis3 first.
In my case it was insufficient memory on my SD card.
After inserting a 1GB card everything went ok.
Seems like TT5 checks available memory and quits without any error message if memory is'nt enough.
In my experience TT5 would not instal over activesync on WM5, but can be installed manually, and will run perfectly OK except for not being able to find a BT GPS receiver (not sure about wired GPS as I haven't tried it).
See the details I posted about 10 from the top in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=43412&highlight=
To use the BT receiver you will need the TT V5.21 upgrade.
I have a 1G SD card in my Wizard; its half-full with "stuff", but 512MB sure ought to be plenty I'd think!
You can't just run the update from their website, it is a patch, not the full install.
"This update can ONLY be used when you have already installed a registered version of TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 on your Pocket PC/Palm OS device."
As far as support - call, don't mess with submitting a ticket. They are actually really good.
I beg to differ....
ryanc2,
You previous post is simply incorrect. I've download the patch, installed it on my JasJar and had no problems. You HAVE to install the voice from the original TT CDs or else you'll never get past the "Start -Up Wizard" in TT.
You will need to enter your activation code (you get from www.ttcode.com) during the start up process.
Also, I've installed v.5.21 and have used my BT receiver with no problems. My guess is that the people who are having problems with this do not have their BT GPS configured properly or they're running a cracked version (don't read into anything. I'm not accusing anyone! I'm just telling what I've found).
BTW, I've found installing TT maps via an external card reader (i.e. pop the card out of your wizard and plug it directly into your computer via card read) is the fastest and easier way to copy maps.

Just simply stating what is posted on their website - I wouldn't know as I upgraded from a previous install of 5. Thanks for clarifying.
After reading may threads on here about people not being able to get TomTom working with US maps once they have upgraded to v5.21 I thought I would look in to a way around the troubles.
Here is what I think peoples problems are:
1. Bluetooth GPS could not be paired under TomTom v5.00
2. Cracked versions of maps or even maybe real v5 maps of the US don’t work under v5.21
People want US maps AND Bluetooth GPS i.e. numbers 1 AND 2, but can't find a way to have their cake and eat it.
After many installs and trials of TomTom v5 and v5.21, I think I have just hit upon a solution. The basis of the problem is that TomTom v5 does not let you use a COM port that your Wizard lets you set, so how do you fix this.....
- I installed TomTom v5 as per the many sets of instructions on the forums, ie copy CAB files to your SD card and install.
- Next pair your BT GPS to COM port 8.
- Run TomTom and set up as normal, when you get to the GPS setup, select COM port 2
- Close TomTom
- Copy navigator.cfg (installed in /Program Files/Navigator) to your PC
- Using a hex editor edit navigator.cfg
- Change ONLY the entry for the number after the work COM to 8 (or what you set the COM port to above)
- Copy the file back to the original location
- start TomTom
You should see that the BT GPS is now recognised; also you should see that you can select all the maps that you have installed.
I have not tested that the BT GPS works in the UK and the US ‘cos I can’t be in 2 places at once, but I hope that some of the US users can verify this before I move out mext month.
Let’s hope this is the final answer I have been looking for
Wow. That's great, thanks for that.
i've just spent the last week with the Bluetooth problem, only to realise about an hour ago that I had the answer all along and I was just too stupid to realise.
In case anyone out there has been battering their head on their laptop in frustration (and is similarly mentally challenged as myself), I have a hint for those using the not entirely legal version of TT.
If you have the one marked 5.21 or have one which has 5.00 and 5.21 exe files in the zip somewhere, you need to copy across the cabs (as described on many forums - I have messed about so much I can't describe a full process to get to where I am now but I'll try to summarise below)
Once the cabs are copied, version 5.00 will work OK but will have the BT COM port problem.
Then stick the 5.21 cracked exe into the Program Files\Navigator folder ( i did not delete the old one, just renamed it incase it went wrong) and then when you run the new one it runs as before but with the COM port options.
My mistake was when I first got the files, I tried running the exe on my PC and in the phone. It doesn't work until you have the cracked 5.00 app already working and only then if you stick it into the Navigator folder.
Sorry if this is just stupid but I have browsed god knows how many forums over the past 2 weeks and so many people seem to be having similar problems (some with genuine tomtom and some not saying but hey, if they had paid for it in the first place the upgrade would be easy, right??).
I'll try to summarise the steps I took to get mine working (these are my best guess of the basics to get it working, skipping the hundred other things i have tried which failed to help.
1. installed cabs (WZD, GPS, PINAddIn & my desired Voice) from pocketpc and voice folder BUT had problem with ttn cab as just gave 'unsuccessful' message
2. Copied maps into storage card in their respective folders (NB apparently need to have at least 2 maps to get it to recognise them, if you only have one just copy the folder and rename one of them)
3. Downloaded WinCE Cab Manager (freeware for first 15 uses) from OCP
4. Opened ttn.cab in WinCE Cab Manager and extracted exe and data.chk file and put into Navigator folder in Program Files
at this point the 5.00 version should load, set up maps and voice and works fine apart from GPS
5. Rename (or delete) the TomTom Navigator.exe and replace it with the 5.21 one from the cracked folder.
all the GPS stuff should be easy from there as COM port 6 should show up (and is covered elsewhere anyway)
I think that's the essential points. There is a lot of superflouous stuff that comes with TomTom that you don't need to get the main function working so that's why there is a minimum of installs.
If there's anything I missed, please correct me.
Anyway, I am now only 1 step away from being able to us the darn thing after 2 weeks of trying.
The main reason I got it was to navigate in Germany when I go on holiday in June as I have a few serious days of driving and want to be able to navigate easily.
I have been able to get my Germany and Great Britain maps working fine but as I live in Australia, I want to get used to using TomTom now with my Australia maps...BUT THEY WILL NOT LOAD!!!
They show up on the screen when I pick my maps but the screen just freezes when i select Australia.
Any ideas???
Heres a navigator.cfg already set to use com port 7.
Anyone with v5 can set their outgoing port on the BT device to port 7 and replace their .cfg file with this one and it should work - I just tried it.

I'm really glad to know that my $100 and 4 hours of hacking around with this thing weren't all in vain. Thank you SO much.

You can try that - but the easiest solution to try first is the one where you set the GPS in TT to any port, setup the BT device config to outgoing port 7 then replace the navigator.cfg. That seems to work for most people.
hi pewe,
another small issue. us maps dont work with 5.21 upgrade. is it a question of downgrading to v5 before a trip and borrowing a friends tomtom reciever to work there and come back change again or is there anither way.
cheers
I have tried that with my Cinular 8125 (WM5), in TOMTOM set the gps to com 2 then switch the cfg file adn it still doesnt work, i have MS streets and maps working fine, so i know the GPS is good.
I have a new idea lets work with 5.21 and see see what version map it reads then edit our usa maps and change the version. Has anyone tried this, ive been looking all over for a TOMTOM map editior, but no luck. I have all the USA maps so if you need one let me know

Config within Tomtom offers -
COM9:
Infrared Port
COM3:
COM0:
COM2:
Serial Port
These are the 'normal' options - so I can't understand why it doesnt work.
Are you sure that the BT is setup on your device as com port 7?
If it is and it doesn't work, try setting it to com port 6 and try this config file.

Certain my BT device was set to Com port 7, still tried this alternative Cfg. file and changed port to 6 with the same result in that options within tomtom remain unchanged as stated before (assume the expected result should be to provide additional Com ports within tomtom Configure screen to enable selection of Com port 6 ?)
Not sure then.
Maybe V5.1 has some differences about it.

Other forums suggest that installing the V5.2 update from tomtom will fix the comm port bug....not sure however if this will wreck all the files I have so painstakingly installed. Any ideas if running the tomtom update is safe ?
Not sure - it depends what you have installed. Some have reported problems with Maps from V5/V5.1, but mainly in the US. Mine went from V5 to V5.2 without a problem.
If you backup everything before you upgrade you can always re-install..
How to get TOMTOM Working with UK and USA Maps
I have TOMTOM 5.21 on IPAQ in the UK and wanted to load the Michigan Map for a business trip that I have next month.
Having downloaded the USA Maps I spent all day trying to get TOMTOM to recognise the USA Map with no luck.
Read all the forums and tried one or two tips but to no avail. Then I tried something quite simple.
1. Install all the way to 5.21 in order to get Bluetooth GPS working. Once done this makes the correct .CFG file.
2. Simple back up the 5.21 executable or rename.
3. Copy the cracked 5.0 executable into the navigator directory. Voila ! It retains the Bluetooth settings AND it allows me to load the USA maps.
Wont be able to properly confirm the USA maps work 100% till next month but UK map work just fine and when I load the michigan map it lets me browse but cannot plan a trip cos GPS says I am out of the scope of the map.
So looking good.
hi there, as this is my first post and i'm definitely a relative n00b here, please go easy on me.
right, the problem:-
i have a Vario2 on the UK T mobile network and althought it's my first PDA i have to say i love it.the only problem i've had is when i tried to install TomTom.
before this handset i had a Nokia 6680 on which i installed Tomtom 5, so when i got my Vario i thought i'd install the same software ( my Tomtom disk has both the symbian and smartfhone versions on).
the install didn't work so i simply deleted it and forgot about it.
at a later date i got hold of Tomtom 6 and tried to install it but one of the files will not execute so there's definitely something up with my device as i've installed the same software on two other Vario2's without a hitch.
i may be wrong here, and i probably am, but i'm of the opinion that when i removed Tomtom 5 i didn't fully get all the files out and therefore when i try to install Tomtom 6 it detects the presence of some version 5 files and aborts.
if i'm right can anyone tell me how to rectify this and if i'm not can you guys tell me where i'm going wrong.
thanks in advance, i'v been viewing these forums for a while but only just registered today.
this seems like a very friendly and imformative community.
I may be completely wrong here but I think the root casue of your problems is that you first tried to intsall TomTom Mobile (Smartphone version) on the Vario II. The Vario II is a full Windows Mobile Phone Edition (rather than Windows Mobile Smartphone) and therefore requires TomTom Navigator which I'm guessing your TomTom 6 is.
I presume you have double checked the "remove programs" bit in the Vario II settings folder for any TomTom software.
You don't mention where the install is failing - PC side or Vairo side. If it is PC side you may beable to obtain the CAB files from the TomTom disc or the Temp install folder and copy them manually to the Vario Storage Card and then try running the CABs directly on the Vario.
Failing all that I am sure a full Hard Reset on the device to wipe it back to "new" will work but that will mean reinstalling everything else too.

no pc involved in the install process my friend.
i copied the files to the memory card and executed them from there.
i know it's not a software problem as i have installed the exact same software on two other vario's

sorry to go all n00b again but can you tell me EXACTLY what a hard reset does?
does it put the device back to the way it left the factory? will it even erase calender entries and delete any notes etc?
thanks for taking the time to reply.
Hi Dark Side, yes a hard reset will restore your phone to its out of the box state ... anything you have added like appointments etc.. will be wiped.
If you are going to do a hard reset you might want to install a backup program first ( SPB Backup <click here> is a good one) and do a custom backup where you just backup the calendar/tasks and emails/sms etc.. that way you can just restore these after the reset.
Good luck.
If there is no PC invovled and you are using the *.cab files directly then my guess is the old TomTom left some files about and perhaps some registry junk. You can can search for them but it will be time consuming.
I think a hard reset will be the quickest way to fix it but it will take your Vario II back to the state it was when you took it out of the box first time - no programs, no calendar, no notes etc.
Check out the wiki for how to do a hard rest.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_For_Beginners
You can restore all your data after the Hard Rest if before you do it you make sure you take a backup using a backup tool like SpriteBackup. If you don't have backup software fully sync your Vario II and then take a copy of the Sync Files folder on the PC probably named "My Documents on [ppc name]" in your PC's "My Documents" folder.
N.B. I'd reinstall all software rather than restoring it and do that before restoring your data (or copying the files back from the copy of the original "my documents on [ppc name]") That way you'll make sure there is no risk of data being over written.
thanks for the help.
i'll either report back with the results, or i'll make sure you all get invitations to my funeral after i've banged my head off the wall for the millionth time, lol.

UPDATE.
looks like my suspicions were right and there was a few remnants of a previous installation attempt lurking somwhere in my device.
a quick hard reset and i now have Tomtom working perfectly.
well, there's just one glitch...everytime i run it i have to approve the connection to my gps receiver and also enter it's passcode.
can't find the tickbox to prevent this anywhere. grr.
thanks for everyone that replied.

Glad you got it working okay in the end
Just a thought, the passkey request might be because you have the "Passkey required" box ticked in the bluetooth settings (settings>connections>bluetooth>security) ... might be worth a look to see if the box is checked and if yes, uncheck it to see if that stops it asking.

Glad you got it working, as a matter of interest which bluetooth outgoing COM port did you use for the BT GPS?

comms manager>settings>bluetooth settings>security shows a box with authentication (passkey) required...this box is not checked.
now, after asking me for the passkey all day ( i've turned it on+off about ten times) it has suddenly stopped asking me and simply started up the app.
hmm.
i use a BT-77 by the way and i used this same receiver with my previous nokia 6680 for over a year without it ever asking for authentication.

i'm connected on COM4..but here's a new twist.
within the last hour the BT receiver has disappeared from the devices section of the bluetooth settings area of the comms manager.
now all day (i only got this working last night) the bt receiver was in the devices folder, but with a question mark next to it whereas now just my earpiece is listed in there.
weird.!
Hi Guys,
I've been lucky enough to get hold of a HTC 630 (or Cavalier i think its code named).
At present I want to utilise the Wifi as much as possible and have been hunting around for suitable Wifi programmes.
Wifi Fofum on aspecto looks a very good product. Can anyone give feedback on the software and its reliability? i.e. Can I expect regular crashes or loss of data etc etc.
Any feedback / suggestions will be greatly received as info on this device is pretty non-existant.
Many thanks.
Wififofum is good I use it quite often though on an HTC TyTn. Problem is that although it shows you either a list of networks around you or a nice radar screen - it is a bit limited beyond that. It's free and runs smoothly though. Another free one is Hitchhiker and this provides you with a chance to connect to networks/hotspots etc. Also takes some of the hassle out of setting up the connection. It's also free. It does need the .net framwork 2 installed but their site has a link to install that as well:
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/
And for a variety of the more serious network tools I recommend the Cambridge Computer Corporation - e.g. Vxipconfig

Trouble downloading
Hi Mike,
You helped with a query on wifi and pointed me in the direction of hitchhiker whick looks excellent. However I can't get it to download. The installer goes on my PC fine but I can't do anything with the CAB files.
Am I right just going straight for ver 0.4 and none of the prev versions? I don't know if I'm doing it right by downloading the installer first.
My active sync tells me that the installer is primed to be transferred on next connection, and it does. Buts thats about as far as I get. The icon appears on the 630 but no data must be in there.
SOS!
Cheers

Does Hitchhiker get listed in your programmes? And if sowhat happens when you open it?
With cab files you transfer them unopened/unextracted to your device and open them on the device.

trouble
Hi Mike,
Sorry for the delay in replying. the error message I get is as below. At present i've got windows mobile centre on vista home prem. The PC picks up on everything on the device and lets me just copy and paste the file over but the following message appears:
Hitchhiker.exe
notsupportedexception
at microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleAR()

Microsoft.Windows.CE.Forms.InputPanel..ct
or()
at
Kasuei.PocketPC.Wireless.Hitchhiker.MainForm.InitialiseComponent()

Kasuei.PocketPC.Wireless.Hitchhiker.MainForm..ctor()

Kasuei.PocketPC.Wireless.Hitchhiker.EntryPoint.MAIN()
Any assistance would be appreciated.
copy the cab to the phone and run it using file explorer. Dont try to open the cab or the exe on your pc.
hitchhiker download problem
hiya
yeah thats what ive been doing. cutting and pasting it straight onto the device after saving the cab to my docs on the pc. i've been saving it straight to the mem card and trying to open it in file manager.
just the same as games and stuff i've downloaded and they are fine, playing no probs.
The error message above is whats displayed on the device when i try and open it. i'm sure ive got the correct ver of the net framework on the device.
Any suggestions?

Can't fathom out the problem. Some suggestions for what they are worth:
The Hitchiker site has different versions available - could try uninstalling and try another one.
The Hitchhiker site has a .netframework checker on a link near top of page - could install checker to ensure you have correct version.
Failing this you might need to contact Kasuei with the error message you get and see if they can help.
