anti theft progg idea: - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

easiest app:
if a person fails to enter correct mode 3 / 4 times:
all ram+rom will be locked and hidden, phone will just reboot, stay in boot splash screen saying:
"Phone in current status is useless,
Only "User name here" can unlock the phone.
if u return it to him you will recieve X amout of money. contact him at...."
only way of unlocking will be:
a 12 digit unlocking code written while in boot splash screen.
to break an encrypted 12 digit code will take forever (if possible) !
only you can unlock it and the phone is still useable !!
i can imagine a friend of mine trying to guess my code.. i wouldnt want my phone to delete everything after 3-4 tries. even if there will be a warning sign - he can take it as a joke and continue trying...
can any 1 make such a prog?

could they not simply reflash?

nop.
To make sure - after the thief failes to enter the code, the phone will disable ASync !
that way - no tapping in.
And thats it !
The phone is "stuck" in splash screen, all "locked up".

Gadi asked me to comment on this idea, so my thoughts:
Writing the app is not difficult, this is basically just a reimplementation of the password redirect (custom password screens).
If the phone has password protection then you already can't access activesync. So this is a built in feature. Overriding the password protection is not easy (but may not be impossible...): see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37693&highlight=password
The length of the password string is not so important. You could make it 2 digits, and lock the system immediately afterwards if it's wrong.
Why three attempts? I don't see that the length of the password is important so long as it's more then 1 digit. Only you should know the password, so you only need 1 attempt. Get it wrong = thief = lock immediately.
How do you intend to unlock the phone after it's in the locked state? After 3-4 attemps, how permanent is the lock? Is it so permanent that you can't even unlock it? How do you legitimately override it if the program has already locked you and everyone else out? You must either have a 12 digit password and infinite attemps, or any length password with a quick lockout, with some kind of override. What method would you use?
Activesync lockout is fine (and already built in), but as hb328_dtdd says what happens if he hardresets? Fine, put it in extended rom. But what if he reflashes? You can't burn the software into every new rom. I know you want to keep the phone locked in the splash screen, but I don't think it adds anything particularly useful. If you've got a good lock, you've got a good lock.
So, your thief has a locked phone he can't use. Options for him: try to unlock it, try to sell it, throw it away or give it back to you.
Selling it - well the new buyer will have the same problems as the thief.
Unlock it: Someone will know how to reflash the phone, and he'll reflash it and you've still lost your phone.
Throw it away: you've lost your phone.
Return it to you: highly unlikely, but perhaps the best aspect of your idea. Offering a reward may end up with the phone being returned to you, but you can already just put that info in your Owner Notes and display it on your password screen. But I think the thief will be quite silly to return it, and not many other people will find a $1000 phone on the grass and think "oooh, I should return this". I think > 50% people will put it in their pocket, and you're back at the start again..
So in conclusion, although possible, I don't see what it really adds over the standard password screen, other than perhaps put it in extended rom. And for this, we already have IIWPO.
Sorry for sounding critical, but I just don't think that password locking any phone will help much. It's better then nothing. But for me, the question always is, and with all due respect to him, because I love him, but imagine if Buzz finds your locked phone. How long will it be locked if he wants it? Many people on this board have the knowledge to reflash a phone.
There are 57,289 members of this board. That's a lot of potential clever thieves And this is not the only PPC board.
I think, if your phone is stolen, you're in trouble. Block the IMEI, call your insurance, and hope that you had any kind of password protection on it to protect your info.
V

thanks for ur honest opinion !
and just so u know -
in israel - U cant imagine how many people get their CAR STOLEN and then recieve a phone call saying:
"wanna see ur car again? meet me at bla bla bla and bring 2000$"...
and the purpose isnt making people like buzz not being able to override the lock.
just a common thief...
besides - pass protection ect are like rooms: if U can get in and out - u can break in...
Most people (here at least) WILL call you and say "ok, how much am i getting?"
and that what i wanna come down to...

I think that's true. The reward is a good idea.
But for this, I recommend Omega One Pass or a few other apps.
http://www.omegaone.com/pass/default.htm
I don't use it anymore, but I once has some fun hacking it. Very nice, and you can customise the screen to give your warning/reward.

Very true about the rooms! Pretty much all protection systems can be hacked I think, with enough time. You want to make it inconvenient for the thief to use it, and more attractive for him to give it back (ie reward!).

I'm not sure if this one is WM5 compatible, but I know a few guys recommend it. I dont like it though:

There was another anti-theft program somewhere. You had to save your mobile phone number in the phone memory. ANd if someone was changing the owner's info ( the buyer of a stolen phone for example), the phone was sending a text message to the saved phone number with that info.
So u knew exactly where to look for your phone

rottie: that's IIWPO I think.
V

I know your intentions are good. But developing a permanent lock will create the basis for one hell of a nasty virus.

Hey rottie,
Yes, this is IIWPO ("Interesting Interaction With Previous Owner"). However the phone number you put in is not your own. It is an SMS number to which you want the new owner's SIM card information sent so you can chase the guy down. (BTW, I'm currently looking for extra info on this, as it's not sending the information to the SMS number I entered, so if you decide to try it and are able to get it working, please let me know!
Thx.

iiwpo
I have it working on the universal. It does not, and was not advertised to, send any sim card information, nor will it do anything at all on a sim card change. The description of iiwpo on the wiki site tells exactly what it does. You have to change the owners name on the today screen. When you do this, an sms is sent after a reset or sleep mode (but only once!) All the info you enter in the personal file is sent (name, telephone, address). No other info is sent, and if the telephone number is not entered and the thief has caller id disabled, you will not see a number when the sms is received. I have the program in extended rom, locked and hidden. It loads automatically on a hard reset, and is transparent to the user. It works, but has limitations. The ONLY way to have the unit send an sms is to change the owner name. I did speak to a technician at pdakill, and they are working on a program similar to iiwpo, with pda kill integrated. They expect release 1st quarter of this year. Presently, pdakill will not work on wm5 devices.

Just a small question: do people really enter the owner's info?
I always have had it disabled because I don't see the point really, and it just takes a valuable space on the screen...

rottie: I've never used it. My today screen is already overflowing, owner name seems to be a luxury!
V

owner info
I agree. With pocket weather installed I have removed owner info to regain screen space. I know who I am, so I don't need a reminder. I do put the info in on the remote chance that someday an honest person might find my phone. IIWPO gives a small chance of actually locating the idiot that has it, or the idiot that bought it from the thief. Lots of people playing with a new phone will put info into the owner name. Even if it is not their name, and caller id is not blocked, you have a start in locating it. If nothing else, with pdakill installed, you can send an sms and wipe out the phones sd card and memory. If they are not savy to the extended hidden rom, they may never know what is going on and you can periodically wipe their phone clean. At least it would provide some satisfaction.

Apart from the situation when you are too drunk to remember who you are, and where you live, I really don't see any use of having the owner info on screen. A bit like carving with a knife your name on the three in the back graden...

Challenge to coders in here (Stolen Phone Location Cab file)

ok here is the challenge, now some of us know the horror of a lost or stolen phone. Who has it? Where is it? Can i track it? Well thats where this challenge comes in. We all know about the extended rom , most people dont think that u can mess with this but actually you can. For those who dont know what the extended rom is, it a file folder that contains all the cab files that are used to restore your pda back to factory preinstalled. Well i know that using some programs you can actually edit or delete files in this folder. What i propose or challenge the coders to see if they can come up with a cab file or program that can be placed into the E.R. so that if someone hard resets the pda, that when it comes back and resets it would set off the cab file to collect information like the phone number of the new sim card the thieves put in the stolen unit, and or any other info that can be used to track this device. to email it or say call you at a certian time. Point is that if you can get the number of the person that has your phone, you can get it traced and at least get the cops to go to the address that the new sim card is registered to.
Wow, I like that idea.
I was actually coding it so that the first thing it would do is execute a full-screen lock and you'd have to enter a preset passcode. The only way to get around anything in the Extended ROM though is by performing a soft-reset during the 3-second pause.
The problem with the current WM5 HTC devices (Wizard, Universal, and Apache) is that they have a digital signature feature enabled by default. So I can't hack the Autorun (even if I could) to bypass the 3-second pause, since that would break the authentication of the digital signature.
I could, however, disable the security on the Wizard and Universal with a digitally-signed CAB file found in the Apache's Extended ROM...
If someone could teach me how to access the SIM, that would be key...
Um, am I missing something or isn't this what IIWPO does (for the WM2003/SE devices anyway)? As soon as someone changes the owner info. and puts in a new SIM, it SMS's you the details - I already have it installed in my ext.ROM.
For the WM2005 devices it might not work but it's currently protecting my XdaII.
can you provide a link for iipwo
no sim
doesnt seem like that program access the sim, it seems that it relys on the new owner to input their information, but how many of us actually do that. i dont for sure. so if the new owner doesnt imput their contact info then there is no way of finding them, where as i propose to make come up with a way to read the sim and get the phone number, that way its definatly going to get them

They don't need to, all it does is compare the existing text (or lack of) with the stored value (your own), then gets any data and sends it. If nothing else you'll get the phone number as part of the SMS. If they DO enter info (and most people I know do, just in case it is returned if lost), then you get that too.
You also get the satisfaction of slowly racking up their bill for them if they are charged for SMS and if they query it and the telco starts to ask questions about where the 'faulty' handset came from or suggests it goes for repair... Gotcha!
wm5
isnt this only for WM 2003? has anyone got this to Work on a WiZard ?
if someone steals/finds a wizard then what are the chances they will know how to or even if you can hard reset it? and the ones "in the know" might just install a new/default rom image overwriting whats on the modified ext rom.
what you need is something that executes on maybe the 2nd or 3rd incorrect pin number entry.
not true
thats not true , u can get a manual at imate to show u how to hard reset. but there is no manual unless u read these kind of forums. most theives are crack heads that just take the phone to see if they can sell it for money. no knoledge of these devices
what i mean is there is no manual to enter the extended rom unless u read these kinda forum, we are fanatics
iiwpo relies on security by obscurity.
It works quite well on Walaby and Himalay.
If put into extROM it will be installed after hard reset as well (but since it is not signed the user wil get the ability to cancel in WM5.
I am planning to test its functionality on WM5 with my new Wizard.
BTW: Anyone allready has a ExtROM editor to bypass the read-only protection in newer ROMs?

Any Genius Around?

Hi!
I have an imate jasjar and i have been facing all these problems..can u please help?
1) My Spb weather doesnt update. How can i make it update?
2) How can i show spb clock on today screen?(i have spb pocket plus v3 installed?
3) how can i distribute memory between storage and program? i cant find a slider which was earlier used to distribute the memory between the two( it was located in settings/memory..
4) How can i hear music thru my jabra car handsfree?
5) Is it possible to view my IP camera on PPC. I logon to website room.nishcam.ourlinksys to view my camera?
6) My Etrust antivirus is not working. It says avui cannot be opened. Is it possible to re-download the program without hard resetting my phone. This was supplied with 1 yr free subscription. i dont have the key as it was entered by default. Tried to contact imate. Their customer service is hopeless.
7) How can i hard reset i mate jasjar?
8) What all good plug in can be used with pocket plus?
Can you please help me with these questions. Thanks in advance.[/u]
Nishant, you might as well post my PM to you in this thread, in case it helps anyone else.

Still need help or everything solved/answered?
Here are the solutions!
Here is the solution from our friend Vijay
Nishant my friend, thanks for your compliments. I'm no genius, we've probably both have the same amount of experience with the pocketpc. I've just thrown myself at the board and various books.
SPB weather: how are you updating? Ensure you can browse the internet first (I use activesync)
Then go to settings and choose the comms tab. Click test connection. If that works, you should be fine.
I disable connection manager because it tries to connect everytime I connect to the net, which is annoying. I manually update by clicking the refresh button on the today screen, or just "download weather" from the comms tab.
2. No idea. I've never used it.
3. There isn't a tab on WM5. It's not needed because of persistent memory.
4. Never tried it. It's generally not possible, but you are looking for something called the audio gateway profile.
Check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=29508&highlight=bluetooth+handsfree+music
This thread will also help you out:
http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=54951&perpage=20&pagenumber=1
6. No idea. Why do you need a virus killer? It just slows down your pda. Use good net hygene and you will be fine!
7. I've never tried it. I wrote a program to do it, but this is what I read on the forum:
* bootloader : light + power + reset
* bootmenu : camera + reset
* coldboot : power + reset
Basically I understand that there's a program on the universal to wipe storage memory. This is equivalent to a hard reset after you soft reset.
I'm sorry, I don't use my universal for anything other than development, so I do very little with it right now!
Let me know how you get on.
V
I forgot to answer q5.
IP cameras should be ok, but it depends on the camera. Some use an ActiveX download to view the camera, and that probably won't work.
If it dumps jpgs or gifs to a folder that would be easy.
If it uses a java plugin, use Netfront or another Pocket browser with java built in.
V
Answer to question 1:
I had the the same problem with Spb Weather: was not updating. If you write Spb, they will send you a link for v1.5.0, Build 478 which was designed for WM5. Current version on the website is only v1.1.1
Answer to quesion 2:
Having Spb Time show in Pocket Plus is a 'future' plug-in ability. It is shown at the bottom of http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/plugins.html?en
Answer to question 7:
Depress both keyboard softkeys (the two on the top row that are dash shaped and the soft rest button at the same time). Thankfully, this is awkward to do.

Hey Vijay! i totally agree with u m8. and btw we guys are still waiting for your application which could alter senders id. The day u release it mate..ill be the first one to donate 50 quid..thats a gentlemans promise.
where as the answers are concerned.
1) Managed to solve it by downloading a patch from their support section.
2) Still awaiting for the new release.
3) i was being stupid askin that question.lol
4) Not been able to do that..still looking for help
5) I guess it uses active sync..so again hard luck.
6) Imate customer service was hopeless..neways took vijay's suggestion and deleted the bloddy program. Hackers..my phone is free for attack.
7) Got it, program called "Clear storage" hard resets the device.
8) Using all spb products as plug in..n enjoyin every moment of it. Still hungary for some more applications.
Vijay doesnt yr phone go slow with all those PIMs n applications..man what do u feed yr phone with? lol..i wish i could have a today screen like u on my jasjar.
Guys..something is wrong with my jasjar's display..some weird mark has shown up on screen..looks like inks being spread..god!! This cant happen to me? My phone is under warranty? Do u think the screen would be replaced as i havent done anything..oh my baby..help.
Screen should be replaced under warranty. Sounds bad! Should post a photo so we can all complain about it if necessary! Did you bend it or anything?
My plugins are mostly standard stuff. Well, VJEphemeris is all written by me, VJAudioNotes is mostly rewritten by me, an invisible spacer plugin called VJTodaySpacer is useful, so only a couple of other 3rd party jobs.
On my magician I've never had a performance problem, but I'm very careful about what I keep resident in memory and store everything on storage or storage card. I keep very regular backups and restore them if I've tried a program I didn't like and want to remove. The registry easily gets full of cr*p! Just had the good fortune of hard resetting after finishing my new program, VJAccioPhone, discussed here. All in the interests of development!
I'll work on the SMS spoofer, but I'm on holiday for a week. But I'll be studying, so hopefully good things when I get back, and I'll work on releasing VJAccioPhone and updating some other stuff!

broken Screen?
hi Guys!
On Vijays suggestion iam attaching few pictures of my broken screen. I doubt if this is covered under the warranty, to be honest, i didnt even apply any kind of pressure..i always treat my phone as a baby..first i thought it was my today screen but now i have figured out ..its broken..anyways i tried to contact imate customer service..they were hopeless..got hold of their president,VP and few other management people email addresses..Sent them an email..Here is the copy of the email that i had sent and the reply i got..
Dear Mr. Jim,
I am Nishant Jairath, basicaly from India.
Iam a proud owner of jasjar, had been using it for a while. I had really started to love my device but one day i found some weird mark on my screen. something below the touch screen, it looks like kind of mini grey lines spread over an area of 2 -3 inches. As my device is covered under warranty, the phone should have been repaired. I tried to contact your customer services but recieved no response. i sent around 2-3 emails, tried to get in touch with the chat representative, all the 10 times i tried, it went on time out without any one assisting me. So all my hardwork to get a proper customer service have been rendered fruitless. I have maintained proper logs for the same and would send you if required.
I drove all the way from my home city ludhiana to delhi (6hrs drive) to get my phone repaired and you will be shocked to hear what was their response, they said they cant repair jasjar at this point of time as they dont have the necessary parts. I dont understand why you selling the phone, if you are unable to provide the requisite services. What am i supposed to do? Well, this is my last try before i launch a formal complaint in consumer court.
Looking for your help,
Nishant Jairath
The reply i recieved, i even got a call from imate representative from india..
Dear Nishant,
Firstly let me apologize to you for any inconvenience caused to you in handling your issue. Our online technical support sometimes gets very busy and drop lines. We are currently working on solving this issue.
As by now I am sure that Sandeep from our partners 4th Generation has already contacted you and arranged with you regarding the maintenance of your unit.
We are arranging to send them spare parts as soon as possible. I hope that we will be able to satisfy you and stand for your expectations.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you need anything.
Best regards,

i-mate™ from Carrier Devices
The email i sent after their rep asked me to send imei and pictures of the device
Dear Mr.Sandeep
When i try to take an image with the print screen utility, the mark doesnt show up because probably it caputers images from the rom and not the screen. Anyways i have attached the picture, but there is no sign of the mark. iam sending you the picture taken from a digital camera. This mark has spread since the last time i had a talk with you and also sending you the information that you require.

Thanking You.
Nishant Jairath
what do u think, what will they do? will they ask me to pay?
Nish, it reminds me of an old lcd screen i broke. it leaks and only gets worse.
if you didn't cause the break there's no way they can deny it's a hardware/manufacturing defect, and that should be covered by any warranty. i wouldn't get a 3rd party repair until they've examined it. they have to fix/replace if it's a legitimate purchase and fault... good luck.
v
Great going!
hey vijay!
Good luck with your work,if u need jasjar platform for beta testing, ill b happy to offer you my phone but u ll need to wait until ill get it fixed. My finger are crossed.. looking forward for the launch of VJAccioPhone And yaa..u have a good trip.

Hard Reset, Lost SMS :(

Hi Folks
Well, I did my hard reset yesterday... and it didn't all recover as it should.
It failed to start most of the Orange customisation and I had to manually enable the Extended rom and run those programs there
Also the text messaging has gone a bit wonky! I don't know how to put it but when I try and send a text message it wants to send it via email. I know the SMS is setup, but I can't use it. I suppose this means I don't actually have SMS setup
Any suggestions before I speak to the Orange Support People. I figured you'd be more knowledgable than most of the call centre bred lot
TIA for all the help
Do you really want people to have an Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) for helping you???
for real now...
Had the same problem when recovering my Tytn with a Sprite Backup file, the SMS-folder had been replaced by a folder called IRM-root or something... problem was solved by using SPB backup... I heard this can be solved by not having Sprite backup restoring the mail boxes but in this way, your messages won't be recovered.

Hmm. I was aiming to get this as a fresh install, so haven't used SPB Backup to recover the files on the drive... If I ran it now to recover it would proabably cause more damage than good because of the different setups. But I shall look into that.

For those that asked, the lower section that reads "Monthly Minutes" is a program called "Phone Dashboard" by Hudson Mobile Technologies. It's available through PocketGear and the like Has been invaluable and prevented me from stressing and worrying about my usage. As it is I'm waaaay underusing my 3000 landline minutes a month and 550 cross network mobile minutes Thankfully!

I'm thinking there is something different between 2003 of which he's testing on and the 2005 of which I have. I followed it through to delete all the databases, messages, attachments and the like but when I restarted poutlook (Pocket Outlook) the 3 other messages that were in there previously were still there.
This ARCSoft cab file is reportedly "not a valid program"
Spoke to Orange today. After over an hour on hold went through the basic messaging systems (ie, check the voicemail/text messagin numbers they use). I did explain I couldn't even get as far as that section of sending a message but she didn't seem to grasp that. Advised to delete all messages and then switch phone off for 15 minutes.
Done that, but the update that was supposed to come hasn't arrived.
Then again, ActiveSync has now keeled over
I am doing well... I have not sworn at them yet...
You did remember to turn off the advanced USB functionality after the hard reset.... sorry.....I'll shut up now.!!!!
You realise there are, just at the moment, 3 or four folks (and dozens of the unknown out there) waiting to get the answer to this problem i.e reconstruct the messaging setup. There is very probably somebody around here that knows exactly what to do...if they would be good enough to let us know.
Sorry it's not working out - worth another hard reset??
By the way I got the word mobile problem you had. Googled it and dozens of folk had it but the only solution was a hard reset - which I did and it worked. Unfortunately my full sytem backup was done at a time after the word mobile problem started (Unbeknown to me!) and so it was useless to recover the system...damn. Learned the lesson - take periodic backups, keep a few going back in history and also perform a few routine checks before doing the backup. Otherwise I find Spb full system backup superb, keeps all my customisation settings, all installed programmes, tweaks etc., everything in fact.

Indeed. It's not a common thing but when it happens it's pretty annoying. Considering the hassle I had last time to get the operators' customisations to work even after the hard reset I'm not sure if that is the fault or what...
I had to open the ExtRom myself and run the files in there before I even got anything Orange like working...
Although it might be an idea to hard reset it and check the messaging works before going any further, although I seem to recall it looked pretty messed up back then as well!

I did fix that fault with a Hard Reset
I do have some SBP Backup Files here, so I might see if I can restore that level and go on from there.... Oooh
Thanks for a detailed reply! It's people like you that add a bit more stability into these forums!
Right, I've got some backup files. SO the choices are:
1. Restore & not be able to use WORD as the templates are snafu'd
2. Don't restore and can't send text messages
Well. An update.
This evening I did a reset. SPB Backup had been performing backups every twice a week for most of December
I ran the latest one.
I restored everything but the files.
It did it and not only do I now have text messaging back properly but I also DON'T have the Word bug. This was where templates had been overwritten for creating a Word doc.
I kinda worked out that of the two it was better to have text messaging than word files working I can get around word files. Text messages are, um, different. Don't think I can survive without them
Thank you all for your help. I am now happier with it. Well. I have to reinstall a lot now, but hey ho!

[UPD][9 Dec 2008] smsSender 0.3 - write sms with your pc ( faster..better.. )

IMPORTANT! A web admin(s) needed for Touch-Innovation: look this thread
It's a little pc program. Write with pc and send with your phone via activesync. It doesn't require any runtimes on the phone.
I wrote this little tool, because i felt alternate similar products too heavy for my use.

Great to see another update already! downloading v .3 now
Cool! I will give it a try.
one of the greatest things i've seen on xdadev lately!

if you can add simple "add contact" feature, and something like "write list to txt", - you are my Hero.
this is very, very good app, man.

Hi
Thanks looks nice, on my hw6915 the sms message box is opened with nuber and message in, but it is not sent, nor is question asked?
Will you share the source, any idea how sms'ing on wm device can be done in delphi?

It reads contacts from outlook ( 2003 and above ), so just syncinc via active sync will import contacts

yes, it doesn't actually send those messages just open then on the phone, and then you have to confirm the send by pressing send softkey. I coded this program in four hours so all functions are made as easily as possible the sending function is made by running tmail.exe with parameters through opennetcf rapi, and i didn't find any way to send it with directly on calling tmail.exe? i tried also "-sync" parameter, but it didn't seem to have any effect. If somebody has some knowledge about this, please inform me
The systray minimizing and showing new messages would be cool, but i think that reading messages from phone would need somekind of runtime process running in the phone, because active sync doesn't syns sms's.

About sharing the source, i could consider that i think i'm going to keep all the keys in my hand for little time though, but maybe later, i could publish source. the source is written in C#.

It takes some time to load contact especially if you many contacts in your address book. I'm finding a faster way to fetch them for next version.

Great
Works great with XP and WM6.1, even with Outlook 2002 (which makes all other SMS-Plugins I've found so far incompatible). It's fast, leal and--just nice. The only drawback: It can't handle German Umlauts and apparently some other characters out of my charset. WHen my message e.g. contains an ä, ö or ü, it will be send as an MMS instead. WHen avoiding such characters, all works fine. If you get that fixed and your app would be able to handle my German charset correctly, I'd strongly consider buying you a coffee (you'd just have to say of normal or grand, vanilla-flavoured or wth chocolate chips).

Great that you like it! Thanks
Nice to know it works with 2002 also.
Strange that umlauts aren't working for you, i use those all the time ( i'm finnish ) and they work for me. Does this problem occur on with direct sending and via pocketoutlook sending also?
I'll take coffee as it is offered i'm not so picky about that
Hi!
Alright, I tried around a bit, that's what I found out:
- The ,,Require Confirmation''-option makes no difference, in both cases the message comes up on my mobile and waits for confirmation to be send (which is no problem, this way I can have a second look of number and text are correct).
- As soon as I use ä,ö,ü,Ä,Ö,Ü or ß, my mobile treats the message as MMS (showing me a 70 character limit, compared to 160 characters for an SMS). A carriage return is no problem, yet it does not force a new line, but it shows up as little box (unknown character?). That I would consider a serious limitation, as MMS are merkedly more expensive, and not every recepient has MMS activated on his or her cell phone.
- long texts (I used a lorem ipsum generator) work fine, as long as no umlauts are contained.
I run XP SP3 in German, my mobile is Samsung Omnia WM6.1 in German, too.
Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.
BTW, which part of Finland are you from? (Just curious, my girlfirend has been to Finland once for half a year, in Tampere, and loved the city and the people. So this country is on our places-to-have-seen-before-we-die-list. ;-)).
Cheers!

Hi and sorry about delay.
"Require Confirmation'' function is only functional when
using "direct send" function ( turn off "Only open new sms on the phone" ).
And i didn't found any way to get problems you describe, i tried testing on different coding ( utf-8, ansi etc. )... very strange. I'm using winXp mui version ( in english ) and my rom is also 6.1 wwe. I would really like get some info what's causing this problem. I don't know if this has anything to do with this but which MMS software your phone uses? Mine rom uses ArcSoft MMS Composer.
Btw. I live in Tampere maybe your girlfriend can buy me some coffee instead lol... just kidding
Thanx mate
I'm suggesting to allow the software to send multiple recipient SMS. A contact list with checkboxes should be good enough to easily pick the recipients.
Keep up the good work!

[App] VJFastOff - instantly shut down the phone

Guys,
For part of my VJPoOf collection of tools, I made a tiny app that just instantly powers down the Blackstone.
I understand that it works on some other HTCs too, although I haven't tested it.
It's very simple - no warning dialogs, no shutdown animations, it just instantly shuts down the phone (like pressing and holding power, but faster). Please make sure you've finished what you're doing before launching this app.

I suggest using it with an app launcher, or replacing the existing PowerWarning app that shuts the phone down in the Blackstone.
No frills or installer.

V
PS This should really be part of my VJEschaton app, which already does shutdown on some of the older phones (amongst other things).
This app was only made for the Blackstone, although it may well be compatible with other recent HTCs. For older ones, try VJEschaton if shutting down is your thing!
BTW, for the hard of thinking:
This app could lock your phone up if you put it in the startup folder. So don't do it
Vijay,
Just to let you know that I ran this on a HTC TyTN (Hermes) and it does not power off the device. It simply turns off the screen.
This is FYI only as I was'nt expecting it to work on this device.
Cheers
WB
@wacky.banana: I just updated the post, I should have mentioned that this is really just for newer HTCs, and VJEschaton should be compatible with some of the older ones.
Eventually VJFastOff will be incorporated into VJEschaton, if I don't forget to!
V
Damn you V
I only reversed how to do this the other day (assuming you are doing it the same way as me) for my xdaShutdown - which I'm still re-coding in C++.
Dave
@DaveShaw:
I did this a while ago, but somebody asked about it in one of the other threads, so I thought I'd give it a bit more publicity!
It's a nice little app, and for VJPoOf I made a replacement for both the long press and the short press (standby) function.
The standby function replacement was quite tough, more challenging then I expected (as returning from standby is the problem!).
Can't recall why I didn't release that one now...
V
Confirmed working on my Sprint Touch Pro (stock rom) Thanks for this.

V you have too many apps for me to keep track off (EDIT: you need to fix your RSS).
Nice work.

@Dave:
There's a particular problem related to VJSihaya which I've been puzzling about for 2 years. Last weekend I got 90% to my solution, and nearly wet myself. And yet, that remaining 10% is probably going to take me another year to solve! So I say to you, don't learn C++ - go and become a fisherman or something
Nah, I'm just joking
I love c++, but hate it with almost as much passion, although that's due to my lack of skill, not because of the language
I've got more apps than I can remember, and only about 60% of them have been released. I took a while away from xda devs working on some infrastractural frameworks (WinFX, my window manager, and related things) but am finally releasing bits and bobs again.
Nice to be back.

Dave
I remember many moons ago doing a biology research project which involved taking water samples from a small lake. Leaning over the water's edge, I looked down, only to watch my glasses fall in the lake, whereupon I stumbled my way home and cellotaped some old ones back together.
Now I have laser vision, so can see girls' delicates... Happy days.
V
You guys are funny. Honestly, i didn't do it. I shared this nice little app with a guy, and a little later im reading "i put this in the start up folder, now i can't get my phone back on, WTF??!!??" So, i just figured you guys might have a better solution than i already suggested (hard reset) Although i am a noob, i realize "turn of your phone" apps shouldn't go in that particular folder. workin great for me though
@dschoenike:
My goodness, I thought it was a hypothetical!
Sigh, who would put a shutdown app in the startup folder? To what end? It would surely create a paradox that could destroy the universe.
Hmm, I think a hard reset is probably the only option. I've added a warning at the top
Second: better not to use this app, but VJEschaton or xdaShutdown or similar, which make it a bit harder to shutdown the phone.
As I said, this was a spinoff app made specifically to cut out the crap and just shutdown! If you can afford to wait, just use the existing PowerWarning app in the \windows\ folder.
I feel bad for your friend. tasteless despair
V
Thanks again for responding. Yeah, i really wish it was a hypothetical question, but sadly, no. its funny you mentioned paradox, i was thinkin the same thing. Guess we learn from our mistakes. I really never thought a warning woulda been needed. I told him i'd buy him some apps for the trouble. I feel bad. Thanks for the fast replies. much appreciated.
