Can anyone give me simple instructions as to how to rip a DVD so i can watch it on my Magician.
i have managed to rip DVD to MP4 and can view in TCMP? but with no sound and can run smart movie but can't work out how to go from DVD to the required avi???
any ideas please...
I use Pocket DVD Studio to do that...no messing around..specify size you would like and click convert. No temp file needed....it rips DVD on the go
Yep,
Works fine
Have you tried the free PocketDivXEncoder? You can find it at http://divx.ppccool.com
I have been using it for a while and found that it gives pretty good compression and quality. The conversion is quite fast too.
I've heard a lot of good recommendations from a lot of ppl in various forums...will try it myself
InterVideo WinDVD
I have been using WinDVD Creator (it came with the video encoder card) and it makes a god job of creating DivX files which I can use on the Jam.

All the info you need is there.
Another source for info is http://www.ppcw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=628 (I figured it would be quicker to post the link instead of rewriting the answer I gave in that Forum) Hope this combined with www.pocketmovies.com helps

SORRY I meant .net not .com
DivX is the best.
what about windows media encoder???
From the little I've tried,
it seems that Microsoft Encoder, which is free, provide
a pretty damn good encoding to a PPC WM9 player format.
You can use AVI and DIVX rips to encode.
make sure you use 320x240 and resize/crop to this, 15fps
this will play in ANY WM2003 device ...
Again, as far as I can tell, for size and compatability, MS is
the best (and I hate MS!)
Thanks to everyone for your help and thorts.
I tried the first gide and it worked must i must have sliped up somewhere as i made the film Top Gun from a DVD but usinf the setting shown in the guide it nded up being 315MB, i did then use windows media encoder 9 to convert this to a .WMV (i think) that was small enough to fit on a 256 card and played in media player, rather than pocket TV,
dose anyone know if there i a click and go software to do this, As in put the dvd in the PC and push a majic button and the next day you have a film made that will fit on a 256 card
Thanks again for your thorts and info
John
Well I don't know of one but if you find it PLEASE let us know
matrix in WMP - 100Mb
I just downloaded and played matrix (the first, 2:10 time).
My setting:
source: divx mpeg file
downsize to 320x168 (clipped 15% of the sides)
15fps
16khz mono sound
85k video
total 100kb/sec estimate
final video is 100Mb and plays pretty good.
e.g. the Jump scene is very watchable.
My suggestion to anyone with a DVD to convert:
dont convert
download the movie in divx etc format from emule
then use MS encoder as above
Hi i would agree with that the converting from a dvd to ppc izs greif, but from a divx or mpeg its nice and easy, So in that case dose anyone know of a easy to use software to convert from DVD to Divx, (that would be handy for the xbox) then i could further encode the divx using media encoder 9 to run on the XDA
Thanks
John
Is there a freeware or cheap app that will convert and compress a dvd to a file I can play on my wizard?
pocketdivxencoder - I've gotten some movies under 200 mbs with it. Output is compatible with tcpmp
as far as I can see, that app will only convert video files - it wont do it directly from dvd.
Try AVS Video Converter (www.avsmedia.com) - it's a great piece of code - not free, but not expensive either £19 I think
I've been using Fair Use Wizard and have had great success.
http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/fairuse_wizard_dvd_divx_xvid_backup_tool_light_edition.html
I'm not the most computer saavy guy on the planet, but it seems easy to use, good compression, pretty fast (depending on your machine), etc. I was ripping movies to .avi, but then I found out that WMP won't play them, so I was then spending more time using Windows Encoder to convert them to mpg.
Someone on the forum suggested TCPMP http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about
It rocks!
I use:
Smartripper - to rip DVDs to the PC's HDD.
PocketDivxEncoder - to then encode the ripped vob files to a Wizard compatible format & size
TCPMP - to play then videos on the Wizard
All work well, & all are free.
Hi there,
I am reasonably new to the HD, and WM in general. Just got my HD and absolutely loving it. I have a few long train journeys coming up though, and am looking to make the most of video/audio playback.
Basically I'm not 100% sure how to do it all. I have some DVDs that I would like to rip to my harddrive and then convert into a suitable file type to be played on my HD. I have DVD Decrypter which I will use to rip them to my harddrive, but I'm not entirely sure of the best way to proceed from there. They will just be in standard DVD format on my harddrive. If anyone can help and give me a quick tutorial and recommend a few programs to use, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks!
Firstly I rip the DVD movie to a Divx format.AVI file, then I use a program on my desktoppc called "PocketDivxEncoder" which converts the .AVI to a compressed format suitable to dump onto my memory card (about 80MB for a 45min TV show with reasonable quality - so on that basis a movie would be arounf 160 - 180MB), then finally use PocketDivx player (downloaded from www.divx.com) to watch fullscreen - works perfect for me, I have a 16gb card and have several completer series of tv shows stored quite happily with really good quality viewing!
Thanks for that. How do you rip the DVD movie into DivX? Sorry, new to all this!
there are several freeware apps that you can use to rip a DVD, I use one called "Shark Ripper", it has numerous options incl. output format - where I select DIVX video compression and MPe audio compression. Take a search on download.com and I'm sure you'll find a suitable freeware DVD ripper!
At first sorry for my crapy englisch,

I understand that i have to rip the dvd to my computer.

Maybe this will work for you!? i havent tried it but it looks pretty good.
Heres another convertor http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=492261
I personally use AVS video convertor -http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx?sct=inc&ct=google&cid=67 it is a paid app but very good and simple to use, but i'm sure there must be free versions of a similar program available.
also i convert to MP4 and play using either Coreplayer-http://coreplayer.com/, TCMP-http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/or the built in HTC Album video player. others use different formats for higher compression(to fit more on the sd card)..... Definately think about trying out/buying CorePlayer as it is a great media player.
These are easy to find, use the search box at the top right and you can find a lot of information for our devices. have fun!!
Welcome to the forum
Video converters
I personally would look for a program called Format Factory. Search for it on google. It can convert any video, audio ,pictures etc into any format you want and best of all, it's free.
My favorite converter is dvd::rip (http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/). I've converted movies to 480x256 that play beautifully with CorePlayer.

Click to collapse
Does this convert movie files into that size/resolution or just DVDs?
I use a program called DVD Catalyst. It cost me like $20 but I can rip into any format and screen size I want. I use the free TCPMP to play all my movies on my TP2.

did::rip will only covert DVDs (after ripping them), but I think installing it will also give you command-line tools to be able to convert other formats as well. I haven't looked for a GUI for that yet.
I dvdfab to rip the DVD to my hard drive and AutoGK to convery to Xvid format. Both are really easy to use. I use the basic free DviX player to play them. Not a very nice player but it's free.
The best one... is FREE!!!
Being Dutch, you probably would like to have your subtitles included, something US and UK people does not take into account when looking for a media coder.
Here is the best, multilingual, I set profiles for my wife's Nokia and for my superb Tilt2 (and my old Fuze as well).
It comes with the codecs and the tutorials and all you need to rip any movies/DVD into your phone.

ENJOY!
ive found threads talking about HandBrake and SUPER... but after a few days of reading and trying, the best i can get is an audo track of the movie to play, but no video with handbrake... and super plays both but the audio lags behind a few seconds???
i use DVDFab to get the raw data files saved to my computer, now im trying to shrink those files down so i can run them on my TP2...
forgive me for being 'slow' lol, but im at a loss...
maybe im using the wrong programs and theres something better? something a little more clean cut and to the point?
I haven't done it in a few years, but I used to use the program DVD2PPC to convert DVD movies into a smaller (200-300MB) file for viewing on my Ipaq. Google it to find the website.
Costs $19.95 though, but I remember that it worked quite well. And there is a free trial.
John
i use DVD shrink ( freeware ) and DivX convert for any movies i want to put on TP2. You can download these all for free from their websites.
i use an old program called FlasKMPEG
able to crop and resize etc and it always maintains a high quality movie with a DivX codec
Baddaboom works but it cost. You can find it for free if you look hard. it will convert a movie in less than 30 minutes. thats dvd to 720x480 mp4 so smaller sizes should be faster. but it depends on your video card as well. 100% gpu proccessing to convert so it won't lag your pc while converting it.
