I want to get myself a new SD Card for my Magician:
I will choose between a standard 1 GB SD Card and the SanDisk UltraII SD 1GB
First of all, does it really make the difference if i take the UltraII? How much faster is it anyway? It would cost me almost 50% more.
Secondly, can the Magician even handle the Ultra? Are cards up to 2GB even supported?
Or should I consider a bigger card?
Currently I've got a 256 Sandisk standard....
SD cards
In general you probably won't see the speed deference between the basic and ultra on a PDA, because of the speed of the interface.
If you use a card reader (using USB 2 interface) then you will see the speed increase.
Personally, I've just bought a Sandisk 1GB Ultra plus card:
http://www.picstop.co.uk/Secure-Digital-(SD)/SanDisk-Ultra-II-(USB)-SD-Plus-Card---1GB
Will have to wait and see how good it is!
Apparently 4GB sd cards are coming soon, which should drop the price of the 1GB cards even further.
DS
If you going with a 2gb card - go with the sandisk ultra... I purchased an A-Data 2gb 150x and it does not work.
SanDisk Ultra are good cards.
Hi guys!
I've got 2 512M SD memory card:
- Sandisk UltraII 512MB
- Panasonic High speed 512MB
...and I've got 2 device:
- i-mate Jam (QTEK S100)
- Canon PowerShot SD300 camera
Waht's the difference between the 2 SD?
In your opinion the speed are identical?
Is it better to put the Sandisk into Jam or into the camera?
Hi
I read a long discussion about SD card speeds on this site ages ago.. as i understand it, PPC can only read and write at a FRACTION of a slow/normal SD cards read/write speed, so it really makes no difference.. might as well put the biggest, cheapest card you can in it as anything alse is a waste of a memory card...
My own limited experince with a few sd cards i have (bog standard up to sandisk xtreeme III) shows no difference in speed across the cards.
Lovely caemra you have by the way

Thanks!!
Well... I understand that in ppc I can put the slower one but...
Sandisk Ultra II vs Pnasonic highspeed?
What is the faster? (I'll put the faster in my camera!)
I am perhaps hours from buying HTC Tytn..and from what I can see maximum size you can buy is 2 gig. Compared to my pocket pc (which had an sd and cf slot), I can put up to 4gig cards in its slot. I am going to really miss having a bigger capacity for extra programs, and memory for files. If they do come out with a larger Micro SD,, lets say eventually 4gig for example, do you think that all it would take to be able to adopt this new size would be to to a ROM upgrade (update) or is it written in stone that the max on this unit is 2 gigs.
Thx for any input, and especially any enlightenement in regards to larger micro sd's that are on the horizon.

AFAIK there is no 2Gig limit and 4 gig would be OK, but lets here from others.

4GB is coming soon.. but will it work?
http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/18/kingmax-busts-out-worlds-first-4gb-microsdhc-card/
Anyone know if that will work on a hermes device?
Is MicroSDhc a different incompatible standard?
I dont think wm device do support sdhc system so we are limited to 2 gb or at maximum 4gb but no sdhc....
i will be more then happy if anyone can prove me wrong...
PS:just a note somewhere i read that the maximum possible capacity for micro sd is 32gb but im not sure is it obtainable with sd 2.0 specification (sdhc) or with standard sd 1.1 specification....??
SDHC cards don't work in normal SD slots, like the Hermes has one. There is hope for non SDHC 4GB MicroSD cards though, because there have been 4GB SD cards and now also 4GB Mini SD cards available, that are non SDHC compliant and work in standard Pocket PCs. So let's hope for non SDHC 4GB MicroSD that will work in our Hermes.

This thread is produced for people who may have interest in purchasing the 4GB micro SDHC memory Card, with info and a simple test that I have conducted with the latest 4 GB, 6GB and 8GB micro SDHC memory cards.
So far there are only four brands available on the market, but may be more, these are the Toshiba, kingston, Adata and Sandisk. So before you go out and buy yourself one of these, you must take into consideration of the following points.
-Micro SDHC is not compatible with all device that supports Micro SD,
-Micro SDHC/Full size SDHC are only in there early stage of the market,
And 4 GB is the smallest size available going up to 32 GB, Although larger sizes may not even make their way onto the market.
-Some people have issues with these cards, saying they are thicker than normal Micro SD, and having problems removing them from their devices, although none of the problems has arisen yet for me.
-The prices of these cards are quite expensive, anything from USD 47 to USD 140, depending where you buy them from.
-Due to high prices not many places stock these cards when they were first released, but now they are more popular and are much easier to find. The Adata, Sandisk and kingstons are much easier to find, but the Toshiba brands are mainly sold in Asian, and harder to find in US and the UK.
-Unlike normal Micro SD/SD cards, where manufacturer label individual card for their speed as 25X, 45X, 60X, 66X, 150X, high speed, ultra high speed, turbo and super etc.
This is very confusing for people in search for a fast memory card and can be very misleading, for SDHC the speed is divided into three classes.
Class 2 = 2MB/s
Class 4 = 4MB/s
Class 6 = 6MB/s
The Classes are referred to the minimum write speed, as for the read speed, this will depend on the manufacture.
-The only devices that I know which supports the 4 GB SDHC is:-
Nokia N95 mobile phone
Nokia 6110 Navigator mobile phone
Nokia 6500 classic slider mobile phone
Motorola Z8 mobile phone
HTC Touch window mobile 6 PDA
HTC Touch Enhanced version
HTC Touch Dual
HTC P3600I
HTC Tytn II and all the variations
Cyclops Cyclos DS Evolution Flash Carts
M3 DS Real
M3 DS one SDHC
There are others, these are the only one I know.
Here is a simple test using the program HD Tach to test the speed of these cards.
To conduct this test, the following were used:-
PC using p4 3.00GHZ CPU, 80GB HD with 512MB Ram, with only five programs installed.
6GB and 8GB tested on my Pentium III Dual 1.266GHZ cpu, 120GB HD with 768MB Ram.

All info and data from this test was collected and produced by me, so if anyone has questions regarding the accuracy of the contents, I will not be held responsible for any errors that you may encounter from it.
Due to differences of the card reader and PC specs used, other ppl will get different results whether it's better or worse, but figures will be very similar.
FYI: The Red and Black micro SDHC reader in the photo is called the mobile mate micro reader by sandisk, it can reader and write both micro sd and sony M2, and is supplied as a package with the 8GB Micro SDHC, and read/write at full speed, although the test did not use it.

Awesome info! So, no difference in reading between Class 4 and 6 with your set up. But the advantages were seen in writes.
So, from your writeup, no phone was used in this test. Any chance a similar test could be run using the phones? I dont know if any such tools exist for WM...
if you buy a card with a class 6, you definate get at least 6MB/s transfer speed, as for class 2 and class 4, it doesn't mean it's slower, even these can reach a data transfer rate higher than the class 6, but is not guaranteed, looking at my results, you can see that class 2 and 4 has only a minor differances.
as for testing them out on the phone, i have'nt come across any programs that you can test out, but a fast card like the toshiba, kingston or the adata allows the phone to display thumbnail photos much quicker, as it does have a read rate of about 20MB/s compared to the sandisk at around 11MB/s.

Does anyone know the speed of the microSDHC interface in the Kaiser? Maybe Class 6 would show no improvement at all over Class 2 ??
Chris
According to your tests, I bought the slowest card available! The Sandisk.... Thanks for the info!
Don't know if these figures are of any help (I really don't know what they mean in terms of speed etc) but I used Pocket Mechanic Professional to give me the info on my 4GB Sandisk in Orange TyTn II
Here's what it said . . . . .
File system read test (unbuffered) - 7.32 MB/sec (buffered) - 9.32MB/sec
File system write test (unbuffered) - 394.16 kb/sec (buffered) - 3.21 MB/sec
Does that help anyone??

if you look carefully....
Sandisk is class 2
Toshiba is class 4
Adata is class 6
all with 4GB of space.
so infact, it shows how slow the Toshiba is in terms of writting....
all else, are quite well proportioned.
actually the toshiba is'nt the slowest, it does meet the industial standard, class 4, which offers at least 4MB write spped, by offering 5MB/s.

well, all the cards did meet its specifications... just that when comparing in this test, and considering the classification at the same time, it just slightly faster than a class4 card, so that is relatively slow.... thats what I meant anyway.
Any Idea where i can by the Adata microsdhc card?
Prefered in Germany.
I can't find it.
What is the currently fastest 4GB Card for my Kaiser?

When is a larger one than 8GB coming out?
Supposedly the TYTN II & AT&T Tilt can support Micro SDHC up to 32GB... I am holding out until I run out of space on my old 4GB card... I want to buy a 32GB! But seriously...
when are the larger sizes coming out? Anybody read anything about what is appearing on the market and when?

This is just technology business as usual. Why release the latest thing when you can milk the people out of there money by releasing the new technology in stages. Don't be fooled it will be awhile before the bigger sizes come out. But anyway HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL, THIS SITE ROCKS.
hi everybody
i'm looking for a SHDC microSD card and many thanks to who had open this topic.
i've listen all but i don't understand which is the better microSD for my Tilt: which is the most important parameter that i've to check to find it?
is it possible that the Adata are very good?i've right undestand?
help me
bye bye
if you can afford the 6GB or 8Gb, they are the best choice, with high read and write speed, but if your budget is low, consider the adata 4GB.
but in any case, the transfer rate for any of these cards when transfering direct from the phone, the speed are very similar, it's when you use a fast micro sd card reader, that it takes full advantages of the speed.
just a word to note, more is better, it's always better to have more memory available, than finding out you may need to buy another memory card later on.
