A Question on the size of Big Storage - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hi~
I followed the instructions and succeed in creating a big storage Tmobile 1.13 Rom. Then I checked how big is the BIG storage. I found that it is 26.72 mb and 1.09mb are in use.
However, there are no files in the storage, what is that 1.09mb??
thankyou

It most likely is a system file which is hidden from view. If you use a file explorer like Resco Explorer, you can unhide the files and see them.
So nothing to worry about. Happy storage!

You can have a 16Gb memory card but the /System folder is actually part of your data.img so will have a limited size. It's also a vital part of the Android subsystem so messing about in there can break everything.
If you want to copy files into it, the easiest thing to do is hook up your phone via usb and use Droid Explorer or a similar ADB file system utility.

so basically i need to change the image from 1gb to 2gb from the startup
and the system folder will change aswell?
and im copying apk files to app folder
but cant put to many because room limit
That may not work, I am pretty sure the System folder has a limited size (think of it as a partition, rather than a folder). Someone else maybe able to correct me on that though...

reported internal storage confusion

hi folks,
can anyone explain to me how the the available internal memory is reported in settings->storage on the i9505? mine seems pretty nonsensical.
its reported as follows:
total space 9.25gb
applications 1.74gb
pictures videos 12.54mb
audio 240kb
downloads 20mb
miscellaneous 435mb
available 2.32gb
furthermore, es file explorer is reporting that 6.92gb out of 9.25gb available memory is used, which matches the 2.32gb available reported in settings->storage.
so where is the remaining 4.7gb??!?
i used the sd card analyser in es file explorer to see what's going on and where the data is but adding up all the data there does not account for the missing 4.7gb??
any clues?

Hi,
Have you perhaps made a nandroid backup which saved to your internal memory?
hi malybru. no - i've done nandroid to extSdCard. if i had mistakenly done it to internal, the data would show up in the clockworkmod folder anyway, which it doesn't.
i have flashed to official BTU roms from odin, without wipe, and rooted afterwards each time. could this have anything to do with it?
when i attach the phone to my windows laptop and examine the internal memory in windows explorer, under properties the phone memory is saying 6.92gb used out of 9.25, yet when i select all the files and go to properties, it only adds up to 500-500mb?!?

Hi,
I use a great app from the market, called "FX File Explorer"
It has a "View " button at the bottom of the page which will show you a breakdown of the data on your phone.
Click it when you are in your Main Storage.
It might help to locate some stuff that should not be there.
If not,it's still a great app to have.
yes es file explorer has the same thing. there's no sign anywhere of the missing 4.7gb data! all the files add up to about 600mb.
i still have no clue about this. how about if i backup all the files, reformat internal storage in recovery, copy files back?
i had this problem before.. then i checked data/media.. there should only be 3 folders there which are: 0, legacy and obb.. move every other folder to 0.. hope this helps..

you sir are a genius. that was it. there was a clockworkmod folder in data/media with a nandroid backup in it. deleted it and missing storage recovered! thanks!

Storage takes double the space

I need help with this problem please. It looks like my storage space is doubled, and I am quickly running out of space because of this.
When connecting my Nexus 4 to my computer, I can confirm that everything that I see through the connection is 4.94GB. However, as a drive, it reports only 2.98 GB free. As you may know total memory is 12.92GB.
Now using ES File Explorer, there are these folders that all seem to be pointing somehow to the same "sdcard" storage (the one where all the files are stored).
All these are under Device, so the main root folder
mnt - sdcard (shortcut) - 4.94GB
sdcard (shortcut) - 4.94GB
storage - emulated - 0 - 4.94GB
storage - emulated - legacy - 4.94GB
storage - sdcard (shortcut) - 4.94GB
All the other folders seen through ES File Explorer take 575.06MB, which I'm assuming are the system files
However, if I select all 3, mnt, sdcard and storage, total space taken is only reported as 4.94GB
But if I select only storage, the size is reported as 14.83GB
I'm not sure what is the story with it. I used to have android 4.3, then now I have upgraded to PA 2.99
Anyone could give me any options, where should I look, what folders to check. I would really like back that extra 4.94GB's
Could anyone help me with this please? I can provide any additional details required

I seem to encounter the same problem. Have you come up with any solution?
I ended up formating the entire phone and re-installing the OS

[Q] Question about storage size

I have a new to me S4 and it should be the 16GB version. However when I check the storage size when connected to the computer it says that I have 5.47GB free of 9.71GB total. Is this normal? Where is the other 6GB?
And a follow up question, using file explorer it says that there three storage locations: /Device, SDcard, extSDCard. So it looks like the internal memory is split into two parts, one for the OS (/Device) and another "SDCARD" for data? Is that correct? If I don't mind losing data, can I delete files from the internal "SDCard" or are those files also necessary for the OS?
First and foremost, the "16GB" of space is actually 15GB, since advertising defines 1GB as 1 billion bytes instead of 2^30 bytes as it is actually defined by the OS.
Next, from that 15GB of space, you've got roughly 5GB or so that's reserved for the system, drivers, firmwares, etc. The remaining 9.71GB of space is where your apps and anything else saved to your internal storage go. You *can* use the "move to SD" option to move apps if you're running low on space, but I wouldn't advise it unless absolutely necessary. Unless something's changed since Gingerbread, only certain apps can be moved, and even then any widgets those apps have will NOT function if you've moved the app. (yes, I know I'm off by .3GB, but I think that's just from rounding)
Apps and most of their data are saved to the location /data, but you can't access that unless you're rooted. Some of them make use of either the internal or external storage (/sdcard and /extSDCard) as well, but it all depends. Safest bet is to keep away from the folders "Android" and "data" on /sdcard, since that's where apps will sometimes dump files they need to run. Also, if a folder name is similar to an app name, use caution since it might be part of the app.
I'm not sure on /Device to be honest, since I'm running a custom ROM and haven't really paid attention to that one. I don't think it's the OS though, since you normally aren't supposed to be able to use a file explorer to browse around the OS files.

Use free space in system partition

Hello,
I really like my G2 but i have one annoying issue:
When using one of those great custom roms i end up with pretty much free space on internal storage (system partition).
Since i'm having the 16GB-version i have ~10GB of usable space and currently ~7GB wasted space.
When using OSM-Maps 10GB is not much so i hope there is a way to utilize the free space on internal storage.
I have several ideas but i'm no dev and i hardly know about linux and even less about android.
So thats what i thought of:
Idea 1: Change partition size.
Well i think not a good idea but on my old HTC HD2 i could choose how the storage is partitioned. Don't know if this is possible on G2 and if changes there are not to risky.
Idea 2: Create a virtual SD-Card.
I know that this is possible somehow because i can do that with androidx86 on my tablet. So why dont write an app or zip-File-Patch that creates a custom-size virtual sd-card on internal storage/system partition. Problem is that i can't do that. Help of a dev would be needed.
Idea 3: Redirect folders.
On Linux and Windows it's possible to create "virtual folders" that are just links to the real folder that is stored somewhere else. Pretty handy on windows to move music-library to sd-card with full functions for example.
I think i've seen such things on android too when browsing my device. So why don't move for example the DCIM-Folder and others to internal storage this way?
But again a dev would be needed.
Idea 4: Copy some stuff with root and file explorer.
Thats maybe the simpliest way but i don't know how and where i can copy things. For example i've around 4GB of music on my device and if i can still access it i would have no problem to move it to internal storage somewhere. Maybe to ringtones folder or something like this.
But i'm not sure where i should put it to be on internal storage and access being still possible.
It would be great to further discuss this ideas with you and find some kind of solution.
Well i was able to evaluate on Android 4.2.2 that you can put your music folder into the system/media folder but it was only possible with aroma file manger in recovery.
Then the free space on internal storage gets decreased and the available storage gets increased. This means my files are now inside the system partition.
But there are problems:
Even with root total commander was not able to write things to this directory and even after setting permissions in aroma-fm after reboot i cant write there. So handling is painful.
The music app doesnt find the music now
Found that tool then to create a "link" on sdcard that links to the folder in system/media but that fails because it cannot link to this path.
