Problems using GPRS - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have an o2 XDA Exec, o2 ROM
I don't apear to be able to download email to my XDA using GPRS, I can using WIFI, or through the USB cable.
I have set up a number of different e-mail accounts including using Authenticated (and non) e-mail servers from different providers.
I can connect to the internet on internet explorer, but when I try to access my e-mail at the same time, I get no joy. The message from my inbox is always "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try yo download messages again."
I have set an account up to connect using Work, and another account setup to connect using The Internet, but none work
I have tried leaving the GPRS connection permanently open as suggested elsewhere, but that has failed to work also

Hi mate,
Your on O2 right?

UPDATE
to
80202
This will download any network updates and settings to your handset.
If you are struggling, call o2 one of the staff will do it from their end, then switch your Xda off after an hour and the changes should have been made.
Hope this helps

I tried the update service by text, but no joy. I have contacted the operator, so I will let you know how I get on.
Thanks for your help

Still no joy. Spoke to o2 Customer Services (Data Management), very helpful people.
I can make the XDA pickup e-mail from an o2 test account, but not from my mail accounts. I even put the same sim card into an XDA II and it collected the e-mail fine. I can still collect e-mail from my WiFi connection, so the account settings are correct on the Exec. I am completely stumped. If anyone can work out a solution for these, then a Blue Peter badge will be sourced and shipped to them!!

in my mms settings for o2 i have
server name - O2UK
gateway - 193.113.200.195
port no - 9201
server address - http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
wap version WAP 1.2
outgoing email should be smtp.o2.co.uk
Listen do you have a 3 g SIM from o2?
let me know how you get on with these....cheers, Nep

Hi Nep,
I do not currently have a 3G sim, but one is on its way to me, should hopefully arrive in the morning. The MMS settings don't relate to GPS do they? Looking at my o2 Active settings for the GPRS connection, they read
Connection Name O2 Active
Modem Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access point name wap.o2.co.uk
username o2wap
password asterisked out
domain blank
Afdvanced settings
TCP/IP = Server-assigned ip addresses, no options selected
Servers = Use server-assigned addresses
As always, yuor time and efforts are greatly appreciated

All sorted
Sorted it....
I set up a new GPRS connection using (some of) the settings roughly laid out here http://flash.o2.co.uk/productsservices/mobileweb/pdfs/Pocket PC manual set up instructions.pdf
Changed the access point to MOBILE.O2.CO.UK and Voila, I have a happy GPRS connection.
Thanks for your help Nep,

Excellent news, great job all round.
How do you find your connection to your PC, is activesync working ok for you?

No real problems with ActiveSync once I got it setup, which was most of the problem. I ad to get the very latest (but hardly greatest) version from MS.
Now, so long as I don't have ZoneAlarm running, I can synchornise with issue

cool will re-install and drop mcafee to see what's what.
Cheers again...

Problems sending mail through smtp when using GPRS

I have had no trouble sending and receiving e-mail when I am connected to the servers of my ISP. That is, dial-in ISP, to which I connect via cell phone, where the pop server and the smtp server belong to the ISP where I also have my e-mail account.
The moment I connect via GPRS, all I can do is download my e-mail. When I try to send, I get all sorts of error messages stating that the servers could not resolve the recipients' names. Is there a way around this? :?: Do I need to specify a proxy. How does anyone else connect via GPS and send e-mail from their regular ISP POP account?
i have the same problem
so far i've used the workaround which is
that my isp (which is not my cellphone gprs isp but my cable isp)
have a www mail gateway so i can use IE to login to that and send my mails that way
Yeah! I do that, but when I reach the web mail page and try to click open an e-mail, nothing happens. So that is a dead end for me! There has to be a way around the SMTP issue. We'll figure it out!
Hi
Are you using the smtp address of your pop3 provider or your gprs provider?
My xda ii is connected via an orange uk sim and i use it to both send and receive email from my o2 and blueyonder accounts. In order to send from these accounts i have to use the smtp address of orange ie smtp.orange.net rather than the smtp addresses of my pop3 providers.
Hope this helps
Chris
Indeed it would help if I only had a means to find out the smtp server for my cell phone service provider. Believe me, I've tried and no one ate Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) has a clue as to what I am talking about. I tried smtp.tim.br and smtp.tim.com.br but neither worked
Any clues...?
try something like relay.tim.it or they should have some data support.
According to an NSLOOKUP against their domain name, their primary mailserver is smtp1.tim.com.br - try that.
Fork.
Hi everyone!
Fidlling with the smtp settings, I finally found out how to send mail over a GPRS connection using your ISP's pop mail account.
Everyboy, when set up an account, must fill in the pop.ispserver.com and the smtp.ispserver.com. It so happens that using the GPRS smtp (those who have one) or using pop relay, is trcky and does NOT work! The solution is:
1. Goto Inbox
1.1. Select Accounts
2. Select the account you want to edit (presumably the account you been able to download e-mail but didn`t allow you to send e-mail)
3. Enter you POP mail e-mail address (step 1/4)
4. Enter user info (name, user and password) (step 2/4)
5. Enter account info (type is POP3 and name will be grayed) (step 3/4)
6. Server Information (step 4/4) critical step
- fill in your pop account info (pop.ispserver.com)
- fill in your smtp account info (smtp.ispserver.com)
- leave domain blank!
6.1. Click Options and don`t check anything! Goto step 2/3
6.2. Select (checkmark) outgoing e-mail server requires authentication
- Do NOT check Require SSL connection
- Select Only display messages from the last X days, if you want
Click NEXT and you are good to go!!!
It worked fine for me with TIM in Brazil and Cingular in the US! Some POP3 services don`t allow this kind of connection!

Internet over GPRS with O2 PayAndGo

I have an XDA1 and an o2 payandgo SIM. I have the GPRS activated and have no problem picking up my emails, but I can't use IE or MSMess. It tries to connect for a few minutes then times out. The connection details I have entered are as follows:
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
Username: payandgo
P/W: password
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get IE and MSMess to work?
Excellent forum BTW, I've learnt loads in the last few days reading here...
Enable the proxy server setting in connection options and use:
193.113.200.195
You'll now be able to connect to HTML websites via Internet Explorer, but you'll not be able to use MSN Messenger via GPRS unfortunately.
seraphic, are you saying we can get full internet on O2 payg over gprs, I didnt think it was possible, I use the gsm to access the internet to use my 300 free minutes. If so can you give me the full settings.
Deke, what settings do you use to set up your pop 3 email over gprs.

Great, thanks. How do I do that? I've looked in the Connections bit, but the only reference I can find for proxy servers in under the 'Work network' section. Did I mention I'm using PPC2003?
Cruisin', I'll check my settings for you when I get home.
I'd be delighted if o2 payg did gprs, but 2 months ago they said no.I doubt if it's changed.
LMX, GPRS is definitely available on O2 P&G, I have it and use it daily for emails, it's the web-browsing I'm having trouble with.
You need to set up your GPRS settings under the work connections option so you can use a proxy.

Using the proxy server setting you can indeed view HTML sites over pay as you go GPRS. You can't use MSN Messenger, as it only allows access to port 80.
Cruisin',
Sorry for the delay in responding; here are the settings I use for email:-
First off you need to create a new account so that you have SMS, ActiveSync and eMail. Then run through the settings entering your details (all pretty straightforward stuff). The server info is dependent on whoever is your email server. I have a pop3 o2 account to make it easy, so the servers are mail.o2.co.uk (incoming) and smtp.o2.co.uk (outgoing).
Hope this helps.
Seraphic,
I'm fully webb'd up now, thanks a lot!
I have been told many times that it is possible for internet over gprs on O2 payg, I have tried every suggestion to the letter, I cannot do it, I can get wap over gprs, I can get internet over gsm. I was told by an O2 technician on this forum that it was not possible to get full internet over gprs with O2 payg sim. How can some people get it and others cant? I would be very grateful to see the full settings for the xda/xda 2 listed in a foolproof manner.
OK, full instructions:
* I recommend deleting any existing GPRS settings you have under the work connection settings before entering these to avoid confusion *
1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections.
2. You'll see 2 sets of option links. 'My ISP' and 'Work'. Under the work links, choose 'Add a new modem connection'.
3. Name for connection: o2 gprs. Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS). Tap Next.
4. Access Point Name: payandgo.o2.co.uk
5. Username: payandgo
6. Password: password
7. Tap Finish.
8. Back in the connections settings screen, tap 'Edit My Proxy Server'.
9. Tick 'This network connects to the Internet' and 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet'.
10. In the proxy server box enter: 193.113.200.195
11. Tap OK.
12. Back in the connections settings screen, tap the Advanced tab.
13. Tap 'Select Networks'
14. In both drop down boxes choose 'Work' as the connection. Tap OK.
15. Tap OK again.
16. You are now ready to surf o2 pay as you go gprs full internet.
That's what I did and it works well, but do bear in mind the O2 network is very tempremental; I've been trying to get a connection all day with no joy and I KNOW my settings are correct.
One thing I have noticed though, I can't pick up my emails anymore. It seems the outbox will only connect with an ISP connection and IE will only work with a work/proxy connection. Can I get over this somehow?
iT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS.   :? 8)
Glad to hear it
Connection problems
I have just got an unlocked M1000 and I have been trying to set it up to allow me to connect to the internet using a pay as you go sim. I have followed the instructions above, but i just keep on getting errors of the page not being able to load. I know that the pages exist as I am just using big sites pages such as microsoft.com etc. at the moment. Anyone got any ideas on what the problem could be.
I think they blocked the port for internet over gprs.
Yes they have altered a lot of thinge recently. The trick to get html throught the wap portal was blocked & they also blocked all except wap on the GSM WAP dial up too. There is a different Mobile WEB GSM number but that is 40p a minute so GPRS would probably be cheaper.
Mobile Web on Pay and Go
Dingo mentions that there's another GSM number that's 40p a min to access mobile web....................does this mean I can actually get full HTML web access on my Pay and Go XDA ????? How (what's the number?)
I only need to surf HTML pages occasionally - so it's not worth going to contract .................
Thanks

Vodafone V1640 - no pocket msn

received 3 Vodafone V1640's at work, and the little buggers don't have Pocket MSN installed, which means no MSN Messenger! have hunted around for the .exe but its no where to be seen
is anyone able to extract the necessary files to get Messenger working again? be much appreciated.
i'm quite surprised Vodafone havn't completed screwed the devices and put god awful themes/icons on them. the only things they do are add their own "inbox/sms/calender" icons to the Today screen which point to the same inbox etc as the default ones...
alex
Tell me what files you nedd and i'll try help
But i ask for a favour in return.
I have 02 xda exec in corporate mode. I have no connection settings for vodafone, I cant get mms working or nothing.
Id appreciate your settings.
I downloaded the latest rom from ftp and it doesnt put the connection settings into my exec, only puts in the mms settings under messaging/inbox, mms configuration
Ive tried allsorts of configurations to no avail. I just cant believe that the latest rom doesnt set up the connections automatically.
Voda Rom
Guys can you use vodafone live sucessfully on your universal, does it work with graphcs and live tv
Thankks
I cant get vodafone working full stop!
Cant find any instructions for connections that work.....
The Vodafone ext rom on the ftp doesnt set up connections after a hard reset
the bits n bats of info i pulled from posts here doesnt seem to work
theres no help on the vodafone web site bcos the VPA IV isnt available in UK yet it seems
Going around in circles, got an all singing/dancing device and I cant use it!
Voda
ok i will give you the settings that work for me now with vodafone
Go to start, settings, connections under isp add a new modem connection.
Select cellular line (gprs, 3G)
Call it vodafone internet
Access point name internet
user name web
passwordd web
that should give you a 3g internet connection, let me know how you get on
Cheers
Chris
is it as simple as that? there are no dns servers or anything?
Is there no modem connection under "My work network"
also under messaging>menu>mms configuration, could you give me these settings please?
Please Please if you have the time will you write all the settings down and where they are.
IE my isp, my work network, mms configuration, together with any dns servers/gateways etc
It Would be greatly appreciated.
BTW does your hard reset set up the connections to vodafone? if it does could you share your extended rom?
if you click on the signal strength icon then settings then band.... whats your setup in here?
sorry for pestering you with all these questions but im desperate to set this up, been messing about with his for a couple of days now.
BTW i installed the vodafone rom last night. Sure enough there are no messenger icons but if you use a thirdpary file explorer and browse to "\windows" you will find instmsgr.exe (this is messenger)
and
pmsn.exe, pmsnlauncher.exe & pmserver.exe (these are pocket msn)
I guess you could create shortcuts to these using something like resco file explorer and put the shortcuts in your start menu.
If these files are not present let me know, I can also copy you the shortcuts if your having trouble
I have a v1640, and have been wondering about pocket messenger.
Trying the above mentioned, i find that these files do not exist :S
Any help would be apreciated.
***UPDATE***
I called vodafone today, and after being bupmed about a bit, i was finally told that the v1640s should come with msn, as it is listed in the product description. I currently have a helpful tech looking into the options for me, and it would apear that some 1640s come with msn, and others don't.
I've got an XDA Exec which I use with a Vodafone 3G Sim, and the following settings work just fine for me:
Under Settings->Connections->MyISP I have the following:
Name: Vodafone GPRS
Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access Point Name: internet
Username: [email protected]
Password: [email protected]
Under advanced, I have:
User server-assigned IP address under TCP/IP, and also under Servers.
All other entries are unchecked.
Under 'My Work Network', I have the following:
Name: Vodafone MMS
Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access Point Name: wap.vodafone.co.uk
Username: [email protected]
Password: [email protected]
Under advanced, I have:
User server-assigned IP address under TCP/IP, and also under Servers.
All other entries are unchecked.
If you now go into Pocket Outlook, you need to check your MMS settings. There should be an item at the bottom of the menu called 'MMS Configuration...'. Select it, and check the following:
Under preferences, I have the following checked:
Retrieve Messages Immediately
Download on home network only
Save sent messages
Under servers, I have an entry called 'Contract MMS', which has the following settings:
Server Name: Contract MMS
Gateway: 212.183.137.12
Port Number: 8799
Server address: http://mms.vodafone.co.uk/servlets/mms
Connect via: My Work Network
Sending size limitation: 100K
WAP Version: WAP 2.0
Using these settings, everything I've tried works just fine.
Bagpuss.
And setting up mms helps us get MSN messenger how????? These are phone distroed by voda, and already have the mms stuff setup.....
The MSN app was removed at the request of Vodafone Global.
Vodafone have a new version of VF-Messenger comming soon which has connectivity with MSN (http://www.vodafone.com/article_wit...LANGUAGE_ID%3D0%26CONTENT_ID%3D261956,00.html)
The v1240 (tornado) also doesnt have MSN in the ROM.
The spec sheets have very recently changed to include the miss communication that the devices have MSN.
For what I hear we have not seen half of what Vodafone are planning for the windows mobile devices.
All sounds good.... however my problem is I need msn messenger now and not in a few more months time
REDMOND, Wash., and NEWBURY, U.K. - 30 June 2005 - MSN and Vodafone plan to launch the enhanced messaging service in several European countries before the end of the year.

After some tooing and frowing from department to department, i managed to get a nice lady in TS to credit the £10.99 it would cost for the msn download.
The words "Its not the price, its the principal. Several of your competitors offer this device with msn messenger on it" seemed to work.

Where can you download it from? Seems odd to pay for msn messenger. Would have thought they'd encourage you to have it (rack up the gprs)
You can download it from the microsoft mobile site/msn messenger site.
However, there is word in the pipeline of a vodafone messenger that connects to the msn messenger network.
someone help please ... PocketMSN, Pocket MSN please .....

Payandgo O2 3G/GPRS Problem

I've been searching for days to get my internet working on my mobile,
im using a Payandgo O2 Stellar (aka Kaiser) phone
Using these settings..
Access Point: payandgo.o2.co.uk

Username: payandgo
Password: password
DNS: 193.113.200.200
Alt DNS: 193.113.200.201
And basically i cant go on MSN / Google etc, but i can view the O2 website (and some O2 based links from that website), if i try togo anywhere else i get a message saying:
"The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection & try again later."
I've wrote emails etc to O2 but no replys yet, few friends are looking for ways to fix it but not getting any closer to resolving it so was wondering if anyone here has any ideas?
If you search you will find,

Edit:
Cant get MSN or Agile to connect, net seems to work fine though... ill see if i can find some alternatives
Wow, have also just got a new smartphone, yesterday. Contacted o2 for settings and was given only half the story. Could only get at stuff via wsp and even then loads of links didn't work properly.
Tried your settings and yipee.

hey people, i have a quick way to configure wm handsets for o2 data and mms without having to enter in all the settings - install the cab attached...you should get an o2 icon in the start menu, select it and configure. you may have to reboot your mobile quickly to set it up but mine started working immediately - it hadnt even finished installing and ms exchange was already downloading my mail
btw these settings work for payandgo
Thanks for the CAB settings, worked a treat on my Kaiser on O2 pay and go. Spent 20 mins arguing with o2 customer services telling me i had to be contract in order to enable GPRS on my phone !
What a set of loosers, maybe i should email them and send them to this post ;-)
Thanks again !!
Thank You!
Thank you so much or the settings!! I needed them for my job and was starting to think i'd have to get a new phone. I spent over an hour arguing with "customer services" with them telling me i had to be contract in order to enable GPRS on my phone and you proved them wrong! They said because the phone was contract they said there was no way that this could be done.
Thank God i looked it up on the internet and found you can do it and with ease!!!
So thank you millions! Because now i can send and receive picture messages and also go online! I can not thank you enough!!!
I previously was only aware of settings available for WM PDA's to allow MMS and nothing more. I had the required settings for MMS before, but when upgrading to a new ROM I lost them. Used the same settings but this time, they wouldn't work! Just found this thread, now I can send/receive MMS + I can now browse the internet! THANK YOU!!!!!

Thanks very much indeed for this cab file. At last my HTC Advantage (WM6) will access the web over the 'phone network. I've tried for months to get sense out of o2 to no avail. Either they told me that O2 didn't support the Advantage or the settings I was given didn't work!

hey people, i have a quick way to configure wm handsets for o2 data and mms without having to enter in all the settings - install the cab attached...you should get an o2 icon in the start menu, select it and configure. you may have to reboot your mobile quickly to set it up but mine started working immediately - it hadnt even finished installing and ms exchange was already downloading my mail

Worked fine and didn't need to reboot, thank you so much, I'm so happy now.
The problem with the .cab attached is that it uses the proxy that blocks email or has for me when used:
What i use for connection:
Access Point: payandgo.o2.co.uk
Modem: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Username: vertigo
Password: password
DNS: none
Alt DNS: none
Get emails haven't played with MMS setup as was just happy to have emails
With settings in this thread can't get MMS to work gotta be a way "but if i have to choose email or MMS" i know email is the more used
HOW?

hey i got it working for like a few hours and then i just get connection errors.
I get the following error.
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
"Cannot connect for an unkown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufactuer's documentation and try again."
Anyone else getting experiencing this?
Its like the net only works for a while and then I get connection issues

Getting this also (on WM6.1/Samsung OmniaII). Followed both guides and tried all sorts of combinations (even the idata.o2.co.uk that the iphone uses) and still no luck. These settings are specified for the proxy'd "work" connection. "Direct Internet" works fine with AS.

I use these settings and have done for about a year or so. I sometimes get this problem and although I have credit, it seems to go away if I top up. Not sure why but it fixes it every time

Windows mobile apps don't connect to internet

I have a Vodafone branded X1 which I'm using with my T-Mobile sim. I have gone into the registry and unlocked the default connections (My ISP and WEB) and changed them to work with T-Mobile.
Opera, panels, IE and comm manager connect fine.
Messaging (Email), Windows Live, and Messenger all say they cannot connect (It doesn't even look like they try and connect)
It appears they have been set to only work with Vodafone's default settings, is there anywhere i can modify to make these work?
when you edited WEB and My ISP did you untick the connect to internet via proxy option? but leave this connection connects to internet checked
hotmail etc is working on my phone and the only changes i've made are the ones i gave you on the other thread, except I'm on o2.
Yep, I did all that and I still get problems, the message I get from Windows Live is "Windows Live was unable to establish an Internet connection. Please check your Internet settings and make sure that you have access to data services under your billing plan. If you need help, please contact your mobile service provider."
It doesn't even try to use the My ISP or WEB connections before it shows that message.
...
i had a similiar problem where only opera connected and not msn.
I removed all connections completely (do not only edit them) and restart and recreate.
then it started to work again..
ried removing all the connections completely and I still get the same issues with mail and messenger.
It looks to me like they aren't even trying to look for, or establish a connection before throwing the error
that's exactly how it looked to me, when I was trying to fix it last night. then it all fell into place. it almost looked like it new it wasn't going to work and couldn't be bothered trying! I think the last thing I did was disable connecting by proxy on the WEB connection.
I promise you it is something wrong with your settings and not with Live or Messaging.
I've tried everything I think I can with the connection settings, can you list your settings please eyebeebe?
I assume you're using these settings:
GPRS APN address: general.t-mobile.uk
Gateway (IP) address :149.254.1.10 (alt: 149.254.201.132)
Username : user (alt: wapuser)
Password: wap
Session type: Continuous / permanent
Port number: 8080 (alt: 9201)
Authentication: Normal
Is your Artemis on T-mobile? Can you mirror it's settings? For example you made need to connect via proxy and enter the Gateway IP address as above if you haven't already.
If you've done that already send me a PM and we can go through my settings on MSN...
