More a pocket laptop than a phone...! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Day two of the EXEC - works very well as a phone*, through device earphone, speakerphone or BT headset, but the flexibility of this wee device is incredible... it basically has replaced the laptop I used to use in the bedroom:
Right now, I've got:
streaming radio over wifi using resco radio;
streaming movies fom my pc downstairs using network access feature of resco explorer (after some work opening ports and configuring firewalls);
Terminal Services Access to my PC via Wifi or from anywhere in the world via 3G/GPRS (after some changes as above);
Full VGA Net Access via Wifi of 3G/GPRS...
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and Monkey Island 2 again via the pocketscumm engine...!
Such an amazing device... thanks to the folks here more knowledgeable than me - I've been hitting the board for answers hard over the last 24 hours!
* Compared to my JAM, the phone quality is excellent.
Only thing I'm not liking so far is the stylus, a bit loose in it's home, too easy to fall out.

the universal is one hell of a device for sure! Ive had mine for 2 weeks now and it still amazes me! like yourself I now use it as a pocket sized laptop at home and work (via works wifi ) Great stuff!

BlueTooth Internet

Yo!
I have a PC at home connected to the interent & I have a BlueTooth USB Dongle plugged in.
Simply (yeah, right) how do you configure my home WinXP Pro PC & my Xda Exec such that the Xda Exec can browse the internet using the home PC internet connection over a BlueTooth connection????
I have spent all day trawling forums & internet, but any reference made to Windows operating system does not seem to relate to the one I have installed??!?!?!?!???!
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
Andy
(PS I have manage to create a 'partnership' between the two, but that's all.
Won't ActiveSync 4.1 do this now? I've got my XDA Mini S connected to my laptop via BT right now and I can get Exhange email and surf the Web without WiFi or GPRS as my Laptop is connected to the internet
No special settings required...
However, makesure you pair your phone from your PC for BT Active Sync support... if you already have a pairing delete it on both the PC and Phone and repair etc etc...

erm, Okeey dokee, piggy in a pokey.....
Exactly, in words of less than one syllable, how do you do that.
Assume nothing, as I know nothing.
I have been pulling my hair out & shouting at everything ALL day trying to get this sodding thing to work... BT ActiveSync support <- what is that??? Is this the golden goose I'm missing?!?!?!?!
So far I have managed to, but have now lost a very unstable internet connection (that GPRS kept constantly trying to overrule) I've been messing with COM ??? for the last 2 hours (my latest discovery) but (for whatever utterly unknown reason) I simply CANNOT get my PC COM port to be in an acceptable range (i.e. COM<=9)
ARRRRRGGGGGG!!!!
You are one LUCKY little bunny if this 'just worked' for you!!!!
well done
Andy
1. Download and install ActiveSync 4.1 from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync41.mspx
Follow the instructions you will need your sync cable
While you do that I'll erm go write it all down
Hey thanks m8.
Jolly decent of you ol' bean.
BTW ActiveSync 4.1 slapped in already...
BRB
Andy
OK went to write the stuff and thought I'd unpair mine need to make sure I can get the connection back seems that somthing is remembering pairing somwhere.
Gimmie a few more mins think I'll need to reset phone to get this to work TBH...
Oh and you should not need any COM ports defined in Local or Client as Active Sync creates one...
Yes hard reset fixed the problem.... so you will need to do that too I guess as it seems not to work as somehow the AS link to the phone gets ignored...
Sec should upload a Word Doc.
Cool
I am learning >many< things about BlueTooth USB Dongles.
All of them dodgy to say the least.
One biggy is removing the Microsoft driver from the PC (& issues concering COM port assignment). Once this is done, install the correct driver. THEN DO NOT USE THE DONGLE IN ANOTHER USB PORT.
Poor, poor, POOR programming.....
Andy
Here it is... A bit ragged but what you expect!
Now I gotta fix all my phone back hehe
The key thing is the Phone should show ActiveSync as a service on the PC if it only shows Serial Port it ain't going to work.
Thank you VERY much.
I'll have a look & get back for feedback.
Regards,
Andy
BTW,
This'll make you laugh.
BT.... For about an hour there I was in 'phone mode' (and why not). aka British Telecom (my excuse: I've been trying to unravel anachronims ALL day!)
Then it finally dawned on me. BT. BLUE TOOTH
Dozey sod!
Andy
ROFL
Well I got my phone back up and did sommit similar as I had reasigned I.E. button to OK and was wondering why I.E. kept popping up lots
[email protected]
Their marketing guys must have had a field day with this device.
(The stuff I design has only 9 buttons on it and Jesus, don't even mention marketing to my team - they all get nervous ticks).
Andy
Dunno how you cope with the weight of the Exec but tis nice
Look at my sig.
For the price I got it for I couldn't give a flying fart how much it weighs...
Anyway the mobile phone part of it is just for kicks (I hide myself on the very rare occasions that someone rings me when I'm out because I feel an utter pratt with that lump glued to the side of my nut. Note to self: must get a headset... hold on these are BlueTooth devices as well... arrrrrgh).
For the 2 weeks I've had it since fixing it, mainly used it for:
Showing off.
Mentioning how much I paid for it, and then showing off some more.
Playing 'Age of Empires', Quake, Doom, Tetris, Worms on the Bog. (did I say 'worms'??? )
Fiddling with 'WiFi' connections to the internet (at Work)
Fiddling with 'BlueTooth' Connections to the internet (at Home)
Working out why someone has decided the red 'X' now does NOT shut a program down.
And ultimately used it as a thing to be shouted at.
Weight?? It's lighter than my ZX Spectrum - Kids of today!

What is by far the coolest thing you can do with your Hermes

I am currently getting bored with my Hermes, I have flashed about 10 Roms in the past few months and I have followed the herd on almost every customized look we can come up with (Black, Custel, iphone lookalike, kaiser lookalike) you name it.
SO I thought I would reach out and see what other people are using their Hermes for. First and foremost I use mine as a phone. Anyone else? I also use Tomtom for Nav and orb for music and videos. Once and a while I stream XM too because I have an account. But thts about it.
I would love to hear about what else I can do and what other people think the best thing they have found on the Hermes is. I'm curious to see how crazy it can get.

when I'm bored I use it to mess around with other people's phones and pc's,
funny how so many people leave their bluetooth on nowadays on both phones and laptops
I also use it to surf the net in classes (no laptop policy)
anyone else \()/?

Orb is awesome (I was watching Anchorman on my commute home this evening), also I use my Hermes mostly for work, so tons of email (100 a day or so), attachment viewing\editing). TomTom is a life saver, as is GoogleMaps (saves me lots of 411 charges). Besides that day to day stuff, playing with ROMs and using it to wow friends and co-workers ("I forgot my ethernet cable! how am I supposed to get online now?!"..."Oh, please... allow me" along with a million other examples), wardriving, camera, mp3 player etc.
When I am bored I use the cameras three shot panorama mode to do funny things like getting a friend to do different poses in each of the three shots when the photo is finished its pretty cool. Seeing the same person three times in the same shot doing different things can pretty funny and if you have an imagination you can do some wicked stuff, ill have to look around for some of my shots and post them.
Psiodon
haha Mike Channon you smart ass.. lol.
I use my Hermes as a webcam.. .. The guy mentioned above likes to see me naked for some reason..
I know it is stupid, but I find it cool to run old games using ScummVM. Friends are amazed when they see (and hear) Monkey Island or DOTT on this device. (for the same reason, I have DOOM on my Nokia phone )
The Pebbles application (bluetooth remote control) is fun to play around with, as it offers a great deal of controllers (touchpad, scrollwheel, ...). But I haven't got round to making a proper interface for the softwares I use (at the moment, I prefer to use Puppetmaster on my Nokia to control my laptop, is this also displays data from the application on the mobile screen).
From a technological point of view, the internet sharing via bluetooth is IMO one of the coolest features of the device.
Of course, being able to view movies or get some work done on a plane is great too. And then there is PocketFMS: connect the TyTN to a bt gps, and you get a moving map flight management system (yep, for general aviation!); which can be combined with weather data!
It is a cool device... but could be more stable at times.

I have a bluetooth to serial device, which means I can run terminal connections over bluetooth.. so I can use it to configure routers etc.. just plug the dongle into a serial port.. connect via the phone and there's no need to carry round a laptop for that anymore.
I also use it as a phone and pda of course for those things.. For a normal day it can practically replace my laptop for dealing with both windows and *nix machines.. Pretty good if you ask me.
If you really are that bored of it send me it I can put it to good use
(oh yeah and I play scummVM on it too )

My I ask what kind of bt-serial device? Does it have its own battery, or does it draw power from the serial port?
I have no experience with such devices, but the reason I'm asking is that I wonder if it is possible to connect a bluetooth GPS to a Nikon D200 (this has a serial port for a GPS, to allow for coordinates to be embedded in the exif header). Of course, a setup like this is not supported (I mailed Nikon with this question), but they didn't say it wouldn't work (they hadn't thought of this).
Thanks!

what can you do on a windows box via serial? on a unix/linux box: that must be pretty hard given its lack of VT100 support i.e. 80x24, and no wrap around lines.
having a satnav system...
me walking like a walking encyclopedia ..
wealth of info related to work.. (medically.. )
oh forgot to mention is i dont have to worry about mespilling something.
Orb is the best
The Slingbox player is always nice to have when there is time to kill.
The "coolest" (geekyest) thing I've done is use it to control my irrigation system. I have several Insteon home automation devices installed and when I needed to check all the different irrigation zone sprinklers, I just used the phone to remote in to the host PC and turn on/off each area while I walked around the yard and made adjustments. I could also use the same process to control all the lighting in the house as well.
+1000 for Orb.

Its one of these (I actually got it cheaper than this - from the manufacturer who also sells them on ebay himself but has none on there at the minute), expansys also do them
It's powered via a USB cable.. But i have a solar charging unit that outputs via USB and works fine with it.. so i dont need usb to use it.. does the nikon proivde 5v on any ports as that would probably work.. (maybe even the usb port if it has one and supports weird configs (not just to connect it to a pc as that wont suply voltage))
I have no idea if it will connect a bluetooth gps to a camera.. the closest i can try is linking it to my bluetooth gps and seeing if nmea flows to the serial port.. ill give it as go for you this week.

depends whats connected to the windows box .. or what software its running.. or what its purpose is.. (i work in telecommunications)
On a desktop theres probably not much point, but theres switches, analysers, ATM's all sorts of industrial windows installations that all have serial diiagnostics and terminals..
on a *nix box its pretty much the same deal.. if its running a serial terminal i can connect to it with mToken or Mobile Putty.. theres hundreds of different bits of serial kit you can connect too.. serial is serial doesnt matter that its sent via bluetooth to the PPC.
Works on routers and all kinds of switching gear.. it's absolutly invaluable to me!!
Cool things with the TYTN
I assigned VJCandela to one of the side buttons, this help locating the key hole to my door (home, not car, I am a responsible person!) when it's pitch dark and I polished a few with the boys!
This phone belongs in a James Bond movie, period.
possibilities are endless!
Orb is great!
The Slingbox pro is awesome!!!
Im was thinking the same think as far as what else is possible via these phones... the quest for home automation is what brought me here (via search)
I think the links in the 2nd post should keep me busy for a bit...
Thanks!

Wuh?
Methinks you didn't read his reply all that thoroughly.
Routers, at least enterprise class routers have serial managmenet ports - hence him specifically mentioning serial in the same sentence as routers and nothing else.
I'm not even sure I know what you're trying to say regarding VT100 support - which is just one of many types of terminal emulation (based on the old DEC VT100 video terminal). Windows itself doesn't provide out-of-band management compatible with textual terminals, but many servers *do* have serial out-of-band facilities which can in turn talk to Windows running on said server...think lights out managmement. Most Sun servers have serial access to both the PROM and running OS, and you can redirect a serial port to a console in Linux.
I'm betting that when the OP mentioned managing Winders boxen with his Hermes he was thinking RDP.
But you knew all that I'm sure. =)
I'm a musician - I use it as a guitar tuner (PhoneTuner), I have a spectrum analyzer (HASA) for finding feedback frequencies when doing sound checks, I use it to record songs I'm working on with an MP3 recorder(AudioNotes), to record lyrics (Word, Notes, or even putting lyrics into a Task item so it will sync over the air with Outlook). I use ORB for streaming media from my server while on the road. I use the LED light as a flashlight mapped to the push and hold button with VJCandela. I use it as a timer for Texas Hold 'em poker to decide when to double the blind (SPB Time). I have an english dictionary, and a spanish-english dictionary on it. I use it to read ebooks (HaaliReader). I use it as an RPN calculator (CalcNOW). I use INAV for GPS guidance with a bluetooth GPS receiver when on tour.

Television remote for wing

Has anyone been able to get the wing to work as a remote control? There are a few programs out.
I know one of the programs is called VITO Remote.
Is it possible?
The Wing does not have infrared, so therefore the Wing cannot be used as a typical TV remote.
I have tried Pocket PCs that have infrared. However the experience was not great because Pocket PCs typically have infrared that was meant for high speed data transfer, not physical distance. So a person had to literally be within 10 feet of the TV in order to control it.
I gave this thought too, but the wing does not have the IR port.
Now if you're talking about a wifi type of Tivo or DVR or some device, then poooossibly.
Although, for me, I watch most movies off the laptop via s video, I also have LogMeIn setup, and my computer has an onscreen remote, I can log into that and press the remote from my wing and it'll respond on my pc and the TV infront of me. But thats kind of pointless since I have a Media Center Laptop with a built in remote, AND a seperate remote that controls everything else and the pc.
bah,
I just wanted to anger one of my professors a bit by turning the TV on/off.
Thanks anyways
hahaha now that you mention that.. i know some kid in my literacy class that shut the projector off every 10 mins until the prof just cut the class short becuase he couldnt present anything X-) that was a classic
not really a "TV" remote but a pc remote using bluetooth I use is here
http://www.jaylee.org/
It links up with most applications really well.

A whole day on the Road with only the HTC Advantage

I recently took a day trip for work and it included doing some powerpoint presentations. I decided to see if I could pull it off using only the HTC advantage for the whole day. It worked pretty well actually.
Start:
Early flight at 6.30am. Used the Advantage in the Business lounge to surf the web and used RSS hub to check on some RSS feeds. This is a nice little app for feed reading. There's free wifi in the lounge so I connected and started Opera and the hotspot page came up. I clicked on connect and was then able to use the browser as well as RSS hub and check email.
So all in all I think I can get by with the HTC only for at least a day on the road. I'm going to a web conference in a couple of weeks and I might be tempted to try and go HTC only for it too over the three days away.
The Job:
I gave a couple of presentations and did some training. For the training the guys used full size laptops. For the presentations I hooked up the Advantage with the 4 in 1 cable to a video projector. I hooked it up with the VGA out and the image wasn't as crisp as I would have liked. I'm not sure whether it was a setting or whether it just can't render text from powerpoint crisply but the text on the jpeg images was certainly a bit fuzzy. Not a show stopper but not perfect. The other thing I never quite got figured was how to stop the unti from going to sleep while presenting. It kept turning off if I got distracted and talked too long on a slide. A push of a button brought it back but it was annoying to have the projector constantly throwing up a blank screen. I'll set the unit to not go to sleep before presenting next time. There really should be a setting on the TV out setup that says for it to not go to sleep while using an external monitor or something like that.
As with a Tablet PC the start of every presentation was spent explaining the Advantage to oh's and ah's . They seemed to be most impressed by the battery life.
After:
Arrived back at the Airport and downloaded emails, surfed the web and checked feeds while enjoying good coffee and a great cheese plate.
On the plane ride back I tried out the video viewability but couldn't get into it. I think my PSP is going to be a better media type unit for travelling. So I fired up some music and actually got quite a bit of work done in Word Mobile. I used only the HTC's keyboard even though I had my Stowaway Bluetooth keyboard with me. I just really didn't need to get it out. I think if the plane ride had of been longer I would have but it was only two hours. It was quite pleasant working this way with some music and it made the guy sitting next to me feel bad because he had an eeepc. Mine's smaller than yours buddy, haha.
My guess is the fuzziness may have been from ClearType being on. I can't stand it in WM in 96 dpi and its one of the first things I turn off after a hard reset. However, I prefer it enabled on Windows desktop.
Start> Settings> System> Screen> ClearType tab
instead of using the microsoft power point and word, use SoftMaker. Your Athena would be exactly like the desktop in terms of office document editing functionalities.
Nice to see all is going well.....
Or, next time, if you have a fast internet connection or 3G, use LOGMEIN (www.logmein.com) and display the powerpoint presentation from your office/home computer!
Have you connected the mouse too?

I've looked at logmein before but have never quite got to the stage of using it.
I use the Thinkoutside bluetooth mouse a lot and it is really cool (apart from the thinkoutside driver killing my machine - bluemouse works fine with it)

it was the thinkoutside software I was having trouble with so the bluemouse was a lifesaver.
So did you try turning ClearType off?

SideShow for Windows Mobile

Hey,
I was just wondering how many people use this with their phone? I installed it the other day and set it all up but the next day my wifi broke on my laptop. Although these are completely unrelated my laptop was shipped out for repair so I never really got a chance to mess with it. I know it's just a beta but it's an awesome piece of software. especially if they ever get it to work over wifi and we could access our pc's from anywhere in the world similar to how my psp can access my ps3.
I use it occasionally. Mostly the WMP plugin to control music when I have people at the house. Pretty cool. I could see the usefulness of having it work over WiFi, but since I have built-in BT on the computers that I use it with, it's not a big deal for me.
