Does anyone have the settings for the JASJAR to run on the 3 Network. Vodafone's 3G coverage is kack where I live, and 3's is amazing. I want to change over but don't know if the JJ works e.g. MMS, GPRS, 3G etc.
Anyone?
You must be the first person I've known who wants to go on the Three Network, most people come off it because of their "Walled Garden" Internet policy!!!
Please explain Walled Garden for USA and people who won't get 3G usage out of their Universals.
"3" now have proper data plans which as far I know allow access to the web and dont restrict access to their own limited set of web sites ("walled garden").
3 have an extended Walled Garden for £5 a month, more of a "walled park". 3 do offer an unrestricted data option, but that's a whopping £45 a month added to your talktime bill.
Basically for those who don't understand, 3 restrict which web sites you can visit and attempting to use data with a site not on their approved list will be blocked.

Which is why I left them.
Stupid, stupid policies.
...and the above is valid for UK only.
In Austrian 3 network, there are no such restriction. Internet access is wide open.
In Italy as well... afaik.

Since some companies charge insane amounts for GRPS and not minutes, is it possible to work around this by using dialup PPP over the cellular (not GRPS) modem in the connections area?
YES, BUT I THINK DEPENDING ON WHICH SERVICE U USE; THEY WILL STILL CHARGE U FOR THE AMOUNTS OF DATA TRAVELING BAK N FORTH
The various carriers in Australia (except Virgin, which don't support any data at all yet) all charge data calls over GSM as standard peak/off peak calls, just like voice.
So to answer your question, here in Oz I'll often switch back to Analogue CSD line type and dial into my office via our RAS server (ie. use the GSM line) if I plan to browse / download large content, because the peak call works out cheaper than would downloading the data via GPRS (albeit significantly slower!).

Thanks for the responses
Here's what I've decided to do (USA). I am keeping my AT&T GSM plan for use with voice only. Don't let them scam you into buying a data plan. T-Mobile offers an unlimited internet plan at about 50% of what AT&T and Cingular offer. Once mobileplace lets me know if they have planned for a better dual sim solution than the ghost or cutting, I will switch between sims based on my needs at the time.
CSD Connection Is Beautiful!

I presume otherwise, i.e. most service providers charge air time as if it were a voice call. This is the case with T-Mobile US at least. Nights and weekends are free data time - nice! 9kbps is not too bad to surf the net without graphics.
I posted detailed set-up in thread

T-mobile is offering unlimited GPRS service for $50/month, which is insane since they used to offer it for $20. They do have a plan for blackberries with minutes that doesn't seem too unreasonable, but it is WAP service. Is this worth getting? What is the difference? Thanks.

GPRS is way way way better than WAP, faster too. With GPRS speeds are similar to a 56k modem, WAP is something like a 14.4k modem (I think it's 11k but I can't remember). With WAP you pay for the time you spend online, with GPRS you pay for the data you download and can use the phone whilst connected to GPRS. Get GPRS.
Regards,
Neil.
wap = whatever content they have on their network/server
gprs = anything on the internet.
be warned that some scumbag providers call wap gprs. I have been trapped like this about 12 months ago by vodafone. At the time their own network could not support billing full gprs so after some serious complaining over the service I got I ended up with a company called martin doors who was a partner with vodafone (vodafone do have it now though).
Here I pay 2.5c/kb. $50 usd is high but if I used it unlimited it would be way more.
Actually, WAP is the "highway" as it were, with GPRS and GSM being the actual types.
GPRS is pay per KB,
GSM is pay per minute.
If the two offers were unlimited gprs and unlimited wap, is their any other difference besides speed?
I did not know that wap was available via dial up. My only acces to it was through gprs. What I was getting at was the content. With vodafone AU the internet is only available through "full" gprs, ie you could not go to this site through the wap connection.
Anyway gprs/gsm is the same thing just put to different use.
In the Netherlands TMO offers gprs unlimited 'Internet Totaal' (includes wifi hotspot usage & meant for laptops etc) access for €50 per month & they offer 'Pocket Internet Totaal' for only €9.50 per month (unlimited gprs access & hotspot usage meant for pda's). So it's exactly the same thing even on the phone bill, only the pockey version includes a €40 discount. Guess which contract I'm having with about 200MB usage a month ;-)
Complain about it, refer to it. More European countries offer this scheme. Maybe it works.
Good luck, M
"Actually, WAP is the "highway" as it were, with GPRS and GSM being the actual types. "
no GPRS and GSM are the "highway" as in the connection type
over which HTML or WAP is transmittet
WAP is a sad subset of HTML and require ones operator to make links before one can access a wap page unlike normal internet
I'm heading down to Florida (from UK) in early February and was wondering if I will be able to use my Vario II when I'm there?
I have a T-Mobile contract with Web n'Walk (unlimited Net access).
I would like to use my Vario to access the Internet.
Is my Web n'Walk transferable? Or will I pay a fortune to access the Net when I'm abroad?
Also, any advice about using my phone while I'm there would be appreciated (e.g. should I purchase a SIM for the duration of my holiday?).
If you are roaming then you should be able to use if no problem, though I recommend you unlock it and pick up a sim while you are there as it will be much cheaper.
Forget the damned phone and go see Florida properly!!!!
Mike
I am going to Florida on business (and pleasure).
Ask your T-mobile about net access (roaming) in Florida. If that's short trip ,use wi-fi spots ,like a Starbucks .
I was there last November MDA works great, GSM and GPRS (no G3)
don't forget to disable auto download application's (RSS, whether etc)
I the most of the hotels WIFI is for free.
Starbuck has also WIFI but you have to pay for it
even if you use your T-mobile hotspot account.
it's cheaper to use GPRS for short connections..

you WILL pay for using GPRS data connections abroad. W'n'W unlimited access works only in UK.
The using hot spots is cheaper anyway. The most of Starbucks has free hot spots, some not. The most has contract with T-mobile. As far I remember , the Barnes and Noble bookstor's has free hot spots too.
I've been on Florida a year ago. Always hoked up in to the free Starbucks hot spots.
(Hello eva_d ! )
Help!!
I'm due to fly out to Australia for a 3 week holiday on Saturday.
I had planned to purchase a PAYG (or prepaid as they call it) SIM and use it in my unlocked
Vario II to keep in touch with family/friends via email and also update an
online travel blog. Unfortunately I have just discovered that none of the
Australian cell networks appear to offer full internet access on PAYG.
Anyone know if this is the case, and more importantly anyone know of a way I can get full internet access whilst out there without having to pay t-mobile £7.50 per MB for roaming data (i only pay that a month for unlimited access at home!)
Hi
Im not sure about the prepay card you are speaking of..... but I just move to Sydney and spent the first month trying to sort some mobile internet out.
In the end I got an uncle to set up a vodafone account for me then I used that (they wouldnt give me an account unless I could provide 3 months Australian payslips and about 50 forms of ID)
So good luck!
Try to organise it before you leave or you may find it really difficult.
Sorry that probably doesnt help you much...
There must be someone who does prepay 3g/gprs over here!
mobile internet in australia sucks, i work for Telstra and even on my staff plan its damn expensive.
id love to get unlimited mobile net on my jam, ive often said id gladly trade my phone line for a dataline on my mobile anyday of the week.
As far as i know, none of the australian service providers have internet access on prepaid sims. I guess you are out of luck.
I think that in the future we will not to use proveedor, only will need equipment with wireless and a program similar to skype, will dont need plan for 1 or 2 years and only will pay for the minutes that we spend. Also we will need internet in all places for do call.
Now somebody are using skype in g1?
How will you connect to the internet on the go without cellular service? And how will you have cellular service without (get this) a provider? If everyone simply started using VOIP and got the absolute cheapest rate plan, they would simply charge more for the internet packages to compensate the loss of revenue from voice plans. Or do you expect them to just give you internet access everywhere you go?
it is only prediction ,the voip have more fanatic everyday , all depend of technology and will have consequences for current celular service.
For ej there are some city how broward in florida and other city in the country . where there are internet in all place. if you can use equipment with voip and save money , you doit or not? i know that it can affect to cellular proveedor but all depend of customer.
thanks

Here in Germany our highest parlament is going to force our providers (vodafone, tmobile, eplus, o²) to allow voip in their data plans!
