linux (bluetooth) -> qtek 2020i -> fax out/in - Networking

hi ng!
i need a solution to use my pda qtek 2020i as "modem-device" for my linux pc.
i managed to get a rfcomm0, can send at-commands via this device, could dial out with a local software on my pc.... but,
if i try to use p.ex. efax - efax tells, that the modem does NOT support fax.
is there any way to solve my problem?
thanx a lot for any hints.

Can you do GPRS ? AFAIK, the gprs and fax data
go over different serial channel than the
AT command channel. You will find more
info here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_GSM
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BlueangelProgress

hi!
yes - i can do gprs!
the problem is, that a sdp browse MAC only gives me channel 1 for serial connection, channel 2 for dial-up networking, and other channel (audio, file transfer,...).
thanx for the 2 links - but, the second is for mobile phones with linux on it - the first couldnt help me out.
i use normal windows mobile 2003 on my qtek 2020i - not linux (maybe i will sometimes )
any other ideas around?
thanx

You can see that all the phones
use AT+FCLASS=0 as an init string.
What is the reply to 'AT+FCLASS=?' on alpine ?
You can also try:
AT+FMI?
AT+FMM?
AT+FMR?
AT+FCC=?
AT+FCQ=?

unfortunatly - nothing works.
my rfcomm is up: fcomm0: 00:09:2D:2B:EC:3F channel 2 connected [tty-attached]
but in minicom, which is connected via rfcomm0 all i get is...

Hmm. Works as expected on my Universal.
It has something to do with your radio firmware,
maybe needs some special setup, or it is
simply not supported.

I don't know how the AT debug works on alpine (look up the registry keys in the wiki for himalaya), but
you may enable it, and PM me the log.

p.ex truefax works on my device... with it i can fax-out.
maybe i will go on that solution - is not what i wanted to have (faxout from the pc directlly) - but better then nothing.
hope RECEIVING fax will work with it.
thanx a lot for your nice help.

Wireless Modem in new ROM updates

Hi,
Ok after the breakthrough regarding the ROM updates for QTEK 1010 and it was first revealed here on xda-develpers.com we have some new options in the QTEK now one of them is the WM.
Did anyone manage to use the Wireless Modem via IRDA because its not working the first thing is that the computer is seeing the device on infrared but not as a modem and i dont have an *.inf file to indentify it. If anyone managed to use his QTEK or any XDA via infrared to connect his laptop to the internet using GPRS plz explain how.
thanks
to irda on win2k/xp
visit http://www.ircomm2k.de
Install software at own risk, but this exposes a permanent COM port using IrDA. Also nukes Wireless Link in the process.
Setup a manual modem, select the COM port from above, presto!
Ummm its a good idea but i am not sure if this will work on Windows XP... what do you think?
it does
it does, but as with all things apply with care
Tried it
I tried this a long time ago, IRCOMM2k works on XP but the problem is that i couldn't figure out how to setup a IR generic Modem working on that port.
Yes please, this is a good article,
I installed the ircomm2k on my XP, but how to configure the connection from my laptop to connect to the internet via my XDA PDA as an external modem?
to setup xda as a modem
1. Install Ircomm. note which com port is assigned as permanent.
2. Add new modem: standard 33600
3. Select com port from item 1 as the com port of choice
4. Edit modem profile in devices settings, in Extra Initialisation Commands add AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn name"
5. VERY IMPORTANT: set flow control to OFF
6. Set port speed to 115200 ONLY
Set up a Mobile Web net connection as per your operator
Select your above modem
Align xda with irda port; select start on Wmodem app
Double click Mobile Web connection.
Surf. It's OK but not as fast as a GPRS card.
OR you can wait for O2 to eventually post some instructions...
Thank you very much for your feedback
I did all what you asked me to do, but its not working it gave me an error message:
Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device).
I replaced AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn name" BY AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn01" same as Im using in my PDA. Am I right?
Something I didn't understand in your reply:
(Set up a Mobile Web net connection), you mean a normal dial-up connection?
One more thing, what do you mean by (select start on Wmodem app)?
Do I have to do anything in my PDA before I connect from my laptop? or do I have to do anything in my PDA configuration or connections settings?
Please help me, I want to use the Gprs on my laptop, no need to pay for 2 services, one for the PDA and other for my laptop
Best regards, Ali Alsaffar [email protected]
"select start on Wmodem app" - this means go into the Wireless Modem application on the xda, select IrDA (if thats now you are connecting) and then tap the Start button.
When you've done that, go the the DUN connection on laptop and connect as you normally do.
Unfortunatly I dont have "Wireless Modem application" on my XDA from where I can get it?
I thought the command was:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn name","",0,0
I don't know about the command but what Im sure about it is that wModem application is mandatory, so from where I can get it?

Hi
The wireless modem will be available in the next ROM update from the xda team. I understand that this will be released in the next couple weeks - they are in the final stages of testing.
We will highlight the new ROM on our homepage with a link to the downloadable files.

Hmm... really good question. ME is an update to 98 as I recall, but a clunky upgrade.
Way to check: Setup a new modem. When it asks which COM port you wish to use, if you can select Virtual Infrared COM port then it should work fine.
Get the instructions at www.o2.co.uk/xda on Help and Support.
Anyone know what the T-Mobile USA network connections for using WModem are?
For UK O2 they are:
Primary DNS - 193.113.200.200
Alternate DNS - 193.113.200.201
User name - O2Web
Password - password
Has anyone used wmodem in the US with T-Mobile as a service provider?
Thanks,
JP
Qtek as wireless modem
I also have oldish ME Laptop computer. I did exactly as described on O2 support site. It does not work. The modem on laptop immediately disconnects saying it's not responding properly.
I have tried several cooked versions of the 4..00.16 Eng T-Moble and the 4.00.11 ENG WM2003 roms and niether one installs the WModem app. Any ideas why?
I have a T-Mobile version of the PPC, radio stack 6.24
WM with old laptop computer
It worked for me. I could connect my oldish ME notebook computer to internet over gprs using WM in xda. I used the extra string from o2 and just changed the access point name.
It goes as this:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn"
It works, but the WM just stops responding the moment you disconnect the connection from PC. The PC waits and waits for the confirmation and then hangs up saying no reponse. But as long as you are connected it works very well.

USBSwitch

Apparently Treo 700 owners get a new utility in the latest verizon ROM update to switch the connector between RNDIS and Serial mode called "USBSwitch".
The USBSwitch utility is a workaround that lets you connect through a method other than RNDIS¹. This is useful if your desktop PC configuration uses third-party software or network configurations that interfere with ActiveSync's ability to connect via RNDIS. RNDIS is capable of working correctly if the settings are properly configured, but some of these settings may be configurable only by your organization's IT Helpdesk.

connection error
I get a connection error during flashing step 5. I have checked all connections and used different cables. Any suggestions?
Peter
Did you turn on back your USB ?
What does error on Disk On Chip mean? What are we to do if we encounter such an error? error code =27
No idea, try to reboot you phone and repeat the process
I actually got the answer myself.. Said error occurs if you fail to press 0 on the boot loader portion of the ROM update process. Got WM6 now.. phone performance is a little slow than WM2003 but it is not that significant to return back to 2003se yet...
Thanks

TYTN and LINUX Challenges

I am fighting with these challenges, i am near to the final positive result, but still have problems...
I hope you can help me.
1) connect to internet via DUN
2) Connect to internet via PAN
3) Connect to internet via USB modem
4) Connect to internet via USB Internet sharing
5) Browsing and synchronizing the device
These are the little result so far :
1) Installed this cab :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1351044&postcount=21 (thanx to the Author) and DUN is again available.
IT works without problems with Winzoz, but i am not succeeding with Linux.
I made the usual steps (like this post explain, i.e. : http://klamstwo.org/evad/archives/20 ) linux finds the modem but cannot make it call... (init strings for the modem perhaps?)
What the init string for the TyTN modem?
Any Hints?
( an A1000 works perfect via DUN and the same stick)
2) I followed this guide (thanks to the author) http://www.klamstwo.org/evad/archives/40
And the whole thing works (bnet is connected with IP address 192.168.0.187 and has gateway 192.168.0.1 ) except the fact that i cannot browse internet pages.
Could it be a DNS problem?
I'll try manual configuration and let you know.
3) I tried the connection using the ttyUSB0, modem is ready but does not initialize... HINTS ?
4) SYNCE or something easier?
5) I think Synce is the answer, but at the moment it does not work in my distribution (mandriva). A lot of problems during installation (RPMs and source compiled, non difference). I'll try again. I've followed the How to published around here, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1550906&postcount=4) but i have problems with odccm... it does not install.
other ideas?
I hope this post could become a sort of "mini how to", combining different issues related to the same argument : TYTN and LINUX
Thanx in advance to everyone who will help.
Are these challenges so HARD?
No one here around uses linux and TYTN?
Let's try solving one by one,
let's start with USB.
I tried this one
http://www.mobile-stream.com/usbmodem_wm.html
with windoz it is immediately recognized as a usb mmodem, but with linux the ppp scripts waits for "OK" till timeout.
I also tried the old wirelessmodem, the one for WM5, posted here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=306041 ,
but it does not show the kind of connection in the box (it is blank).
I tried to start it even if the box is blank, Windows recognizes it as a serial device, linux gets a lot of "OK" (KPPP) and Tytn shows the message "Please end data call first!"
I also tried this:
http://www.myehud.com/xv6600/usbmodem.html
But when i hit start It says "Not registered to the network!".
This is about Linux and USB moden... perhaps someone of you has succedeed?
Please report.
The other issue would be having internet sharing working with linux and usb ...
So linux users, let's try...
i'm a ubuntu user, and i feel you.. i don't want to run virtual box, so i just deal with no direct pda syncing.
i tried synce, and failed twice, months apart. (probably my fault somehow)
i do however have to use windows at work, so i end up doing most of my flashing and such there.
though, if you find a good NATIVE solution, let me know!
I am using Kubuntu, and can browse the My Documents folder of my PDA, so at least everything is talking to each other. However, I have not got round to configuring the synchronisation side of things; hopefully it should be possible.
Neil,
did you install synceor is somethingnative in your distribution?
Ahd what about the point 1 to 4?
Whether as internet sharing or modem, usb o BT, are you using the Tytn to connect thelinux box to the net?
I am really coing mad, i feel i am so near but i still cannot...
I don't understant why the Pand does not work for example, bnet has the right IP, has it's gatewaqy but still i cannot browse the net...
devilman - no, it was not native; I think it was SynCE, although, I can't be sure. It took some tinkering to get it going, but, now the device is immediately recognised when it is plugged in (USB) and ActiveSync is run.
To get the next stage working, I need to override the choice of library, as it continually tries to use an old version (libsync, I think), even though a new one is installed.
I have not tried 1-4, and, would not be sure how to do them, other than just trying to mount the device as a modem, and then using *99# as the number. In terms of init strings, these vary slightly by service- for example, for Vodafone UK, it is:
Code:
z+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”internet”
(The "z" at front is the AT command for modem reset; it might or might be necessary, but, sometimes helps the connection to work.)
well, I tried, as said in the first post,to use tytn asmodem.
To have it working with BT you have to install the hack in order to have DUn again.
To have it recognizedas a modem you have to put in in in the "modem" status (again, in WM6 wireless modem is not available,so you have to use the old one or the third party product).
In both case the lnux box connects with modem but i son't succeed in having it call the number...
I used the "usual" AT commands, like the "z" and the cgdcount...
Ideas?
I saw you'd got as far as having the device recognised as a modem, but didn't know quite how far you'd got. However, my Linux skills are so poor, I honestly wouldn't know where to go if the standard init. script did not work.
If terms of calling a number, would that not be *99# though?
Please, has noone found out how to have it working?
I am going mad about this.
I need a way to connect my linux box via tytn, usb or bt...
Any hint?
Uhm, for the last one (browsing the pocket pc) I use wm5torage. That turns your pocket pc into a USB disk and Ubuntu easily recognizes that as a removable drive. It is not the perfect solution but it is easy, fast and works.
and...i have another question
can anyone install an embedded-linux on Tytn, i mean use dual-system ?
is it possible?

I'm on Ubuntu 7.10 and running the official T-Mobile Austria WM6 upgrade on my Vario 2, Bluetooth PAN works flawlessly:
Code:
sudo pand --connect XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
sudo dhclient bnep0
Back in WM5 days Bluetooth DUN worked as well, using the following chatscript in /etc/chatscripts/provider which I created with pppconfig:
Code:
# This chatfile was generated by pppconfig 2.3.17.
# Please do not delete any of the comments. Pppconfig needs them.
#
# ispauth chat
# abortstring
ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT VOICE ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT 'NO DIAL TONE' ABORT 'NO ANSWER' ABORT DELAYED

# prelogin
# ispname
#ogin: replace_with_name
# isppassword
#ssword: \qreplace_with_password
# postlogin
'' \d\c
# end of pppconfig stuff
and the corresponding /etc/ppp/peers/provider:
Code:

connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider"
debug
/dev/rfcomm0
115200
defaultroute

ipparam provider
usepeerdns
of course, for this solution to work you would have to set up the rfcomm port for your tytn in /etc/bluetooth/rfcomm.conf
Code:
rfcomm0 {
bind yes;
device XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX;
channel 4;
comment "T-Mobile Vario II Bluetooth Dial-Up";
}
you should now be able to connect using the "pon" command.
I hope this post is of some help to you... good luck!

Depending on your kernel version (I think this applies to 2.6.21 and greater, but check other docs to be sure), there is a kernel module known as usb-rnds-lite. Get it (links from synce wikis), make it, use it, love it.
I have used it to ICS several devices, 8525, 8925, BlackJack I and II... only quirk is that is works best to start ICS _then_ connect the USB cable.

MDA Compact II modem setup probs

I'm trying to set up my Compact II as a modem for my Asus Eee (running XP) but having some difficulty. I have Activesync 4.5 installed, setup with the Compact II as my 2nd machine but not syncing with Outlook. When I use the Modem Link on the Compact II and Active it I then plug in and Windows tries to find a driver. I then insert my T-Mobile MDA Compact II CD-Rom (shared over the network) but it doesn't find a driver for it
I've successfully set this up on my Inspiron in the recent past so I know it should work, but I can't think what's causing the problem on my Eee. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Tony
Fixed my own problem! For anyone struggling to get their Compact II Modem Link function working in the future you have to force the Have Disk button during the installation wizard. Windows doesn't detect the folder with the modem driver in on the CD-Rom. The driver isn't signed so you'll have to accept the security warning. Works a treat with dial up GPRS settings over the USB cable
Hi! I'm also have the same situation. GPRS settings and ets in MDA - OK, BT connection to comp - OK, but error in modem link.
Could smb throw correct driver? Thanks!

Do you have your original CD-Rom? It should be on there but you'll need to browse to it manually.
Which model MDA do you have?
I'm sorry - have no time to visit! I haven't original CD-ROM - this is one and the main problem. I have MDA Compact II T-Mobile, with original ROM soft (11/14/05), no upgrades, no reflash. If smb have bloody driver - throw me pls!
