Touch screen stopped working :-(((

Hi,
The touch screen part of my universal has ground to halt to the point that it won't work.
There doesn't appear to be any cracking and I don't recall dropping it or sitting on it.
I work a fair bit outside and can get quite a bit of dust and dirt in my pockets and am wondering if it could be due to dirt getting into the connect on the hinge.
Has any one else come across problems with the hinge?
I'm reasonably adept with a screwdriver - are there any things to watch out for when disassembling to check it over?

If u can open with the Universal guide posted in the forum then try clean ing the connectors on the Right and Left of the Clamp Shell part with Iso Propyl Alcohol.
Before opeining you can try pressing mildly with yr fingers, at all the forur corners..it can start working..else do the above...

OK, the screen seems to be working OK this morning, however I seem to be getting a sort of ghost effect where it appears as though the phone icon and the volume icons are getting pressed resulting in the volume controls and the phone/flight mode popup appearing on screen.
I guess it is all down to dirty connections.
Do you have a link to the thread about dismantling the hinge, I can't seem to find it.

only use 99% alchol to clean contacts anything below that can cause corrosion on printed circut boards and contacts.

mine stopped working today too.
but when i took off my screen protector, it worked for a while.. now its dead again.

I think the screen protectors may cause this problem, as I too had this problem with a screen protector; but when i took it off it would work and and off. I cleaned the screen up and after a few hours my screen was working again!

being in Australia I go to the beach allot. with my jasjar.
the sand gets stuck in the sides of the screen putting pressure on the screen and disabling any input. just a thought that it could be the same with u.
hope u sort it out, otherwise claim it on warrenty sooner than later.

The problem I have with the screen is that occasionally the touch screen side of things appears to stop working and also the the volume, wifi and phone dialogs keep on appearing as if I am pressing the relevant icons in the top bar.
I'm guessing some dirt has got into it somewhere or there is a loose connection, but am struggling to open up the screen's case to inspect it.

i took off my screen protector and it worked an hour...
got home, prepared to go to the T-mobile store.. then cleaned my screen ( without protector ) with a small cloth and it was working again.. so weird..
lets wait and see what happens ..

It's not really that weird: If some dust, or something equally small gets between the screen and the plastic frame, it can put enough pressure on the screen, and so the touch screen takes it as a constant (or intermitent) input, invalidating any other action on the rest of the screen.
I just received my Aquapac waterproof (and sand/dustproof) to use my Jasjar hapilly in the beach! :lol:

oh so annoying, my volume sliders keep popping up now..., as if some one keeps tapping, cause when not in Land scape mode when i open the "START" menu. it scrolls down, the same input/tap as wher the volume is in Landscape mode

guys.... although I dont need to register onto this portal and it took me 15 minutes to register (fault of my own) but I got so much relieved with the solution that it deserved 15 minutes of my effort ;-) I hope it helps someone...just like it did help me....
I own a P835 Asus mobile and from past 2-3 days was having problems - start menu continuously appearing and my taps not getting recognized. Since yesterday my screen suddenly stopped responding to any taps or scrolls altogether.... buttons were working fine but not the screen..... i spoke to the facilities centre this morning and was about to take it to the shop but due to my laziness...didn;t go.....
Thanks guys.... what you mentioned above is very correct.... it was just a tiny molecule of dust that the screen was interpreting as my input and finally refusing all my taps..... I just cleaned the screen and the speaker side with the mere stylus n things started working.... thanks a lot.... more than laziness was this worry cause I just bought this piece a month before....
so people...before takin it to the shop....try this one too.....huhhh.....

stylus problem in/out

hello to everybody!
i got my xda trion 2 weeks ago. after one week, it was impossible to bring the stylus into the xda. so i got a new one.
after again one week, the stylus wont come out of the trion.
someone else prob's with the stylus?

First I couldn't get it out / then I couldn't get it in / then it would simply slide in-and-out freely to the point that only gravity was holding it in place (sorry if this sounds dirty, but this is what happened).
Had to have mine replaced. I've heard this issue has been around since the Wizard...
I really hope I don't have the same problem on TyTn #2!!!

After a few days of having mine suddenly the stylus was becoming enromously difficult to remove. At one point it just wasnt moving so after a forceful tug it pulled out and a tiny transparent square of plastic/rubber fell out with it. Looks like it was in there to keep it in place but i have no idea how to put it back in. Now the stylus removes fine and stays in place too :shock:

I had the same problem.
Could not get the staylus in with my TyTN.
So I did the mistake and pushed it in... a "knack" sound alerted me that something bad happened. Could not get the stylus in still... so I yanked a small rubber plastic piece from the stylus hole on my TyTN. Now I can slide easily the stylus in.
From teh reports I heard my guess is that the rubebr plastic inside the TyTN is used to firmly hold the stylus in. While without this rubebr plastic there is nothing to hold the stylus until you fully place it inside the TyTN.

Same here in 5 days

happend with me after 2 weeks. I've been struggling for a week, and now it's workng again! Don't know how long it will last. I hope it won't brake down, I bought Hermes thrue internetshop. Always sick to return things.

I carry something like this, and only use the tytn stylus in emergencies. I'm hoping this will reduce wear.

my TYTN's stylus wouldn't stay in the hole.
i sent my tytn to be replaced (due to BT problems and screen alignment)
and i hope i t won't happen again.

My stylus is a little difficult to remove at times, so I had a look down inside the stylus hole and it appears that there are three of those little pink rubber squares protruding from the side and a dark rubber 'socket' at the end to grip the tip when it's fully inserted. The pink squares are obviously there to provide a little more grip along the length of the stylus, but my guess is that even without them the 'socket' at the end would hold the stylus in place. I imagine that over time the pink rubber will either soften up or disintegrate entirely with the friction.

Solution stylus problem
I had the same problem with my stylus, my solution is take a Poster Buddy Brand name Pritt it is so called here in Holland you can place posters and photo's with it on wals, doors etc. looks like white rubber glue, think I see it in the UK with the name Sticky here you can buy it with photostores and bookstores etc. Take a small piece of it turn it between your vingers to a small ball and put it in the stylus hole after that push it to the end with your stylus.
After I do this I have no further problem with the stylus it works great.

Same issue here... the 2nd day I had it a small transparent square rubber went out of the stylus hole. Now i can put it in and out without problems...

Loose/Jammed Stylus
I'm afraid sending device back for replacement/repair for the stylus problem and loose locking keyboard may only be a temporary fix. Having had my device dismantled I can see exactly what the problesms are with both stylus and keyboard.
For the stylus there is a small block of clear plastic designed to create a friction lock to stop it falling out. There is luckily another small plastic spring lock at the far end so if the stylus is fully in it should click in and not drop out even without the plastic block. The problem is that the plastic block is not held firmly in its slot and as it gets loose creates far too much friction against the stylus which can then drag it right out.
The loose keyboards are due to the metal runners (that you see on back of keyboard partially springing apart (breaking tiny micro welds) at the ends where they lock (or not!) open and closed. These runners if they have sprung open like this will never lock firmly again unless you perform a bit of DIY.
I have performed small operations to fix both these problems and my Keyboard now locks very firmly both open and closed. The stylus issue is dealt with internally with a felt runner at a specific location. BEWARE of course performing these operations will invalidate your warranty. I can be much more specific for anyone who wishes to contact me directly particularly with the keyboard issue which requires quite a chore in dismantling the device - though I can now perform this in half an hour start to finish (Not something I'm proud of with a new device, but I had to workout just how to do the fixes!! )
Actually otherwise I think TYTN is great - superb in fact which is why I did not send it back for repair - couldn't bear to be without it!.
PS Finger around the screen method works every time for me forget all that align screen caper.

@mikechannon: Do you have high quality pictures of disassembled device where we can see the chipset references? we need to gather information on the hardware used inside the Hermes...

SOS - Hermes works fine just that there is NO screen!

Really need help here,
My hermes suddenly decided that visuals are no longer needed.
That means the screens stays off all the time (yes even in bootloader mode).
It works, receive calls and flashes roms but in no situation can I see anything on the screen (pitch black screen).
I've got no warranty so I took it apart and checked each cable and connector - no issues were seen. I tried changing SPL-s, RUU, Roms all worked but left my tytn with that black screen.
Did anyone see this happen or has any advice?
This sucks big time :-(

I've given up on mine as well. It has white screen though. Where do I dump this thing?

If it is out of warrenty, I would take it apart as is sounds like the hardware, check the connections to the LCD. Does the backlight still work, or if you put it in strong sunlight, can you see the LCD working?

My Hermes had a white screen also. I found that if I squeeze the bottom right hand corner whilst resetting it would sometimes work. It seems there is a chip on the switch board that needs the right ammount of pressure on it. I think it was a design flaw as the herm200 and 300 are different. If applying pressure works and you are confident enough take the hermes apart and put a couple of small pieces of plastic or paper between the front buttons and the small square chip on the switch board. This worked for me.
The service guide is available if you google. Let me know if you need more info.
As for the black screen that sounds more serious sorry not seen that one.

what are you guys willing to sell your pdas for? Mine fell in a puddle and i need one for parts. The white screen might be fixable the first couple of times but then it dies off for good, the black screen i've never heard of.
So if you want to sell for a reasonably cheap price let me know, i can buy a new keypad online for $50. So around there would be nice!

I just tested this on mine and actually got some results.
mines the opposite though, it will NOT work with any pressure. I left all the screws loose for that board under the buttons, and left the LCD assemble screws out on that end and it works, But if I press the keys it whites out again and won't come back until I repeat the dis-assemble/re-assemble

I had a similar problem but this was after someone dropped mine on the floor. The screen would just be white screen, while everything worked. If I pressed the bottom right of the phone it would sometimes come on and stay on for a little while but would eventually always go to white screen.
I did manage to use the phone but had use a program called Net Control which allowed me to control the phone over WIFI with the phone screen shown on the PC. Got the phone replaced in the end by the people who dropped it.

i got the flex cable and my phone still has the white screen problem....wtf///

3 protruding buttons cause battery drain too.. need a case to deal with this

I am always on the move with the phone in my trousers and I am sure that the buttons get pressed all day long causing the phone causing the screen to switch on. I find that with my screen off all day over the weekend, the phone lasts about 16 hours without charge (which is pretty **** anyways) but when I am out, it lasts about 8 to 9 hours max.
Does anyone else experience this?

its more likely caused by your phone going in and out of high/low/3g/3g areas while its in your pocket. the buttons are quite hard to press accidentally imo

Apart from the top power button, it's only the middle button that wakes up the device. I have a gel case on mine (not that ugly ass full silicone wraparound crap) and the edges protrude a lot further than the buttons, so I don't seem to have this problem either.

I believe I have also had this issue. I haven't tested it via battery life, but I do sometimes pull my phone out of my pocket to see the screen on.
Additionally, I downloaded a no-lock app from the market, and whenever I went out and had the screen lock disabled, I'd pull my phone out and it would be doing something (using calculator for example). I've since, re-enabled the screen lock
Wish we could disable the menu button from turning the screen on.

I have this exact kind, 4 different colours.

They have terrific grip in your hands and protect the device face down, face up and from any edge impacts. Call it the cheapest insurance policy you can ever have. I have a black x10 and got clear, smoke, blue and red ones. They all look really nice on the device.

[Q] Capacitive button tester

Is there a tool that can test/adjust the sensitivity of the Epic's capacitive buttons? Mine seem unresponsive and I'd love to know if the hardware is not sensitive or the software is ignoring the taps.
Something that displays a readout showing which button is being pushed would be really useful.

there really isnt. its being classified as a hardware issue. i swapped the board out on mine the other day with a returned phone and it started working. taking the phone apart to fix the button at the bottom is a complete pain in the face. and if the gorilla glass faceplate comes out (which needs to happen to swap out the buttons) then it never really goes in correctly. nor does it stay stuck.take it back to sprint and see if you can do a 30 day exchange on it.

I almost replaced it within the 30 days but when I took off the screen protector (Skinomi) to give it back, the keys were working great. I decided to hold on to the phone. Now I have another protector on it (Realook) and am having the same problem. I'm assuming the button is less sensitive than it should be so it works fine without the protector but not well with it. I might have to switch to a partial-screen protector.

So if my buttons are very difficult to press then its an issue and not the general design of the phone itself?
My wife said she has no problems with the buttons so I'm going to have to compare hers to mine.

Same exact situation. I was using the Realook screen protector and everything worked fine except for the back button. After I took it off I noticed that the back button worked just fine. After using it a little longer I still feel like it's not as responsive as the other three buttons.

There's a couple of ways you could do this:
Every time you press a capacitive button, it should blink right after it registers. This indicates it was pressed.
Another way is to boot into Clockwork Recovery Mode, goto Advanced, and use the key/button test option that's in there.
I'm also using a Realook screen protector, so far it's the best I've tried. I've used Zagg, Invisishield, StealthGuard, and Amzer protectors and non of them had the clarity or feel of the Realook. It feels and looks like nothing is there, aside from being an oil magnet. Anyhow, I don't have any reduced sensitivity when using it compared to bare.
One trick I use to apply the Realook is cover the whole phone with 4 or 5 strips of scotch tape (overlapping each other) before application, it helps to get rid of all the super fine dust particles that are floating around. Also, use a high power flashlight, and shine its beam across the surface of the screen, it will make all the dust you couldn't see before light up. Have a few looped pieces of scotch tape ready to pluck off dust particles that get stuck on the protector and screen. Then get the Realook protector ready, pull your strips of scotch tape as one from the top and quickly align the protector, pull more tape off and follow with the protector, this insures no dust thats floating around will get on your screen or protector, if some does, you have the flashlight to easily show you and the tape at the ready to pluck them off.
Reason I said the above is because you might have minute dust particles that are creating a gap with just enough space to prevent your capacitive buttons from registering.

I took drastic measures and cut a rectangle hole out of the Realook protector so I could have direct access to the buttons. It is ugly, but it works. The back button works much better now.
