screen flips when incoming call - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi,
I've got the 9100 for a month now.
and everytime when the phone rings, the screen go automaticly to landscape mode, and the send button is not responding.
i can anser only frem the "answer" button on the screen which is now on the top left corner.
it doesnt happend all the time, but its very annoing.
any help?
thanks

Have you tried a hard reset ?

Hahaha... I know where this is coming from...
You are using the TERRIBLE useless case that comes in the box right? Its magnets cause the screen to flip around... your unit is A-OK.
By the way, you store your unit screen facing out or facing your body? Try changing directions if you insist on using this stupid case (I am using it also but I am looking for a better one).
Has anyone found a better case for the KJAM/QTEK 9100?

I had the problem with the case, too...
But it doesn't explain the send button not working - that's happened to me also, which is damn annoying when you're trying to answer the phone!

oh, and I'll be writing a review of the PDAir case as soon as it arrives... Fingers are crossed!

ooh
It really make sense, the magnet thing.
i don't usually put the device on specified side.
but i will try to notice it from now.
in that case, what about the car holders that uses magnet to hold the device?

Give it a try, use the cases magnets to find the spot on the KJAM that flips the screen. It seems that the sliding keyboard uses a magnet to let the device know it is open and to flip the screen.
The included case is such a useless case. I am sure that NO ONE at HTC actually tested the usability of the case WITH the KJAM inside in an everyday usage pattern...
Also, I am not sure if the magnets don't harm the device..

Many many thanks you very clever and helpful people!!!
I was on the verge of getting on to eBay and letting the top bidder have my XDA Mini, because of this switching lark, but I've tried what has been posted here and sure enough, it is the magnets.
So I'll get a better case and keep the device which I think is excellent.
Thanks again!!

yea
it helped
please give us a recommendation for a good case
thanks

Yeah.. would like to hear about a good case...
I was thinking about one of these:

Screen corruption when answering call with K-Jam

Hi, I was wondering if anyone suffers from screen corruption when recieving an incoming call. My screen sometimes (maybe 6 times out of 10) will go into landscape mode and result in some corruption. It will revert to normal when I actually answer the call. Sometimes, I am unable to answer the call and the caller will be sent to voicemail even though I click the green send button.
Has anyone come accross anything like this?
Thanks.
Well, there is a chance that I am psychic... Are you storing your device in the supplied holster? It has been noted that the sensor which indicates the keyboard is fully out appears to be either magnetic or sensitive to magnetic fields. So it is entirely possible that it is getting temporarily switched to landscape as you drag it out of the holster.
Neat experiment to prove this sensitivity. Take your K-Jam, turn on the power. Now, with the keyboard stowed, take your holster flap place the fuzzy side against the back of your device and slowly move it up around the right-hand edge of your device. At some point along the way your device will flip to landscape.

Ahh, its done magnetically? I was worried a microswitch would eventually wear out ;p
you are so true, it happens to me all the time, it even answers calls automaticaly, I thought I was pressing some buttons while taking it out of the holster but I tried your little experiment , it was positive all the time,
Now, how to solve this without throwing the holster away?
I notices that it happens more when the screen is facing inside, when I insert it screen outside it rarely happens!

Robert, I will pay to have you read my fortune any day!! Exactly as you said. Really gutted about having to ditch the holster, but I would rather be able to answer my calls effectively.
Thanks again, pal. Much appreciated.

U JUST SOLVED MY PROBLEM
I JUST THOUGHT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY HANDS !!
or what i have is the top button on the right handside to flip between land and port, so when it does that you just press the button and it flips back right away!

Phone doesn't answer with "Send" or "answer&q

Folks, anyone else experienced this? It's happened to me twice now...
Phone will ring, I'll take it out of the case, screen will flip and flip back, and I cannot answer the phone with the send button, or the answer soft key either!
OK, it's only happened twice, but as a phone it rather limits the appeal!
Any ideas? I'm still waiting for the PDAir leather case to turn up, as I wonder if it's to do with the screen flip due to magnets in the supplied case.
The problem is the magnetic in the case. There has been a thread about this a long time ago. I just removed the magnets from the case (and then my case became useless :? ). So now I just use my K-Jam naked!

Sorry for the off topic but chiark are u off scoobynet as well
O
Thanks for that - I wondered if it was do to with the processor overworking due to the screen flip, hence missing the keypress, but wondered if anyone else had experienced it!
Yup, I am that same chiark, I'm afraid...

when receive a call the device turn to landscape - Help pls

Sometime when receive a call the device turn to landscape mode (the Keyboard is close).
I have I-mate K-JAM with
ROM version 1.1.9.3 from 9-16-05,
Radio version 01.01.10,
Protocol Version 4.0.13.16 &
ExROM version 1.1.9.106.
I have on the device:
SPB Pocket Plus,
ME Phone Plus and
Hebrew Support.
I disable all the SPB Pocket Plus option and the situation still appended.
Can any one know about that? or can help me?
i have the very same problem mate. I always thought it was the way i removed the phone from it's holster that casues it to change to landscape. The only reason i think/know thats the reason for me is cus the phone never does this when it's not in the holster. My xda is running no external apps so that would'nt cause it.
cheers
same problem here, it happens only, when taking the device out of holster. For me is the solution in orderinga new holster from Krusell because the original holster is very very bad.

it is due to the strong MAGNET in the holster, turn the device the other way around and you will not have a problem

omg, i was thinking about all posible reasons for this but the magnets, lol
Thx a lot for the tip, but i will order the new holster anyway, the original i just dont like, magnets yes or not
Magnets
There is a magnetic senser in the K-jam... like a electronic reed switch..
This is on purpose... much like the blackberrys going into holster mode when in the holster...
shame i can find more info on this otherwise i would write a program to mess with various settings like ringer volume and vibrate..
so it will act differently when in the case....

I though the magnetic sensor had to do with the phone being able to tell when the keyboard was extended. Best I can tell, the device behaves no differently when in the case or out. Would be nice, though if someone could develop some profiles that used this sensor like the BBs do.

I've found that there doesn't seem to be a 'other way around' - no matter which way, it still *sometimes* causes the switch.
Say the case is on my left hip - which way round would you place the K-Jam, screen facing the body, top backwards or top forwards?

Which Krusell case have you ordered?
It happens to me too. I think that the only way to avoid damage is to place the K-Jam with the screen facing the body. I don't know whatcauses it but it is strange. If you open the keyboard slightly, that wouldn't happen. It only happens on a full KBD opening or when I take the phone out of its case. Did anyone find a nicer holster that is still verticall? I found the horizontals quite too big and inconvinient.
I've been noticing mine being in landscape mode when taking it out of the case too, though it switches back quite quickly.
Try this: take the phone out of the case, rub the back of the phone across the magnet from right to left with the magnet running just below the rubber foot (under the windows logo). start with the magnet to the left of the phone, and move the phone left. It switches into landscape mode every time.
Also you can feel the phone try to stick to the magnet if you find the right place.
the magnet is what causes the switch. It won't damage your phone, but it is an annoyance.
Also happens if the Camera app, or any other app that uses landscape mode, is running.

Keyboard Slider and Standard Case Problem

I am an ex Blue Angel owner, and i have had the Wizard for about 7 months now, and the phone is perfect (size, battery, keyboard), however there is one problem that has been bugging me.
I use the standard case, as i like the format. however when i recieve a phone call and i remove it from the case, the screen 8 times out of 10 turns to landscape then back to portrait, and this prevents me answering the phone for 30 seconds or so until the screen turns back, as the hardware buttons dont respond. However i never figured what cused this, until i read through an unrelated post that it was caused my the magnets in the case. and testing this by waving the case over the surface of the phone reproduces this problem.
now i am stunned that they bundled this case with the phone, and i am in the market of looking for another without the magnets i.e snap button.
does anyone know of an an alternative case that is horizontal that has the same belt clip?
i have seen the Krussel Horizontal Case http://www.addonsworld.co.uk/product.php/21636/3384/, but i dont like the detachable belt clip. as i envisage the phone coming off it unlike a vertical case that has gravity and a low pivot point keeping it steady.
has anyone got any suggestions?
I've got the same probleme with my qtek 9100.
Hi Fuzzy [EDIT: and Alex],
some weeks ago I did a search for HTC Wizard on Froogle, and I found a lot of accessories: aluminium hard-cases, new styluses, loudspeaker mountings, modfied desktop stands...
Case-specific search:
http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=htc+wizard+case&btnG=Search+Froogle
I am sure there is a case that fits your needs.
Greetz
Raubi
unfortunately i have looked through all the 8 pages of hits and there is not a case that is suitable. the nearest to what i want is a case made by sena http://www.senacases.com/cart/home.php?cat=413 however it itself has a magnetic clasp, so will most likely result in the same problem
I want a case like the original with same type of belt clip and without a magnetic clasp. Does anyone have or use such a case, or can confirm that the sena cases arent afflicted with the same problem.
Turn your phone over!!!
When you put the phone in the OEM case, have the screen facing your body (away from the magnetic clasp). This will accomplish 2 things:
1. Prevents the magnet from activating Landscape Mode.
2. Provide extra protection from direct impact for your screen.
I have always done this and never experienced the Landscape issue.
For me that doesnt work, infact it makes it worse i've just removed the phone like that from the case a few times and it change orientation every time. the magnet is contained in the flap and it triggers the screen change every time weather it brishes past the back or the front of the phone.
I have just bought the Krussell case from my first post after not succeeding finding an alternative, i think that with a belt clip it will be unsafe and will stick out much further than the original case, however it does have loops to loop belts through, so that may be the tradeoff i need.
I will let you know how i get on when i recieve the case next week.
what i am most surprised at is either HTC or the mobile carriers not picking up on the problem and selecting a different case.
but the one thing i have figured is that if the magnet is contained purely on the pouch and not the flap (i.e. the flap has metal in it) then this problem would not happen. and if i twisted the phone away from the case when removing it... and ...and ...and..... there would probably be lots of ways to get around it not happening, but in the real world in everyday use when i remove the phone it does happen and it causes me to miss lots of phone calls...

Screen Rotation

Hi All,
I have updated to the latest AKU3 ROMs and also a few months ago I replaced the housing...However, I've noticed that the screen does not automatically rotate when the screen is swivelled??
Now is this because I did something during re-assembly of the housing OR is there something in the ROM's that disables the hardware somehow??
Cheers
ODY
Unlikely to be the rom, since it's part of the system HTC provided.
If it's been disassembled it's more likely that.

hey VJ, sorry to bother but do you know what jumper/cable/connector/switch to jump/disconnect/tape inside the Universal to keep it from switching?
I'm sure I saw someone mention that the screen rotation is done by a magnet and switch? It's possible that maybe a small magnet fell out during disassembly? But I have looked throught the Universal repair manual and I can't find any reference to such a magnet??
I'd be nice to know exactly where it is so one would be able to take it out, if it were easy. I don't know if I wanna disasemble mine yet...
EDIT found it!! If you use a very, very light metal chain, as I did, with a keyring @ end, you can hover it around the Universal and see the tension of the chain when it's near the magnet. the keyring sticks too!
it's on the lid, behind the video-call video camera. I'm going to check the lid part of the manual.
Well taking the screen section apart is easy! You don't have to disassemble the whole unit. Looks like my magnet fell out then! Trouble is I want to sell mine so I'll just have to declare the auto screen rotate doesn't work (I've made sure that there is the rotate screen icon on the task bar though!!)

it works!! I tested it with the very small and highly magnetic point in the bezel of my tablet PC (to hold the pen) and it did change orientation.
thing is that it seems to be stuck beside the sound-holes (when the unit is closed).
I wonder how could I disassemble the lid only? are none of those screws @ the bottom connected to the back part of the lid? if so, that would be awesome!
Hi, on the xda's ftp, you'll find the maintenance manual for Universal...may help you to disassemble yours
thanx for the link!
however, it seems rather risky to try to pry the bezel open while still on the unit. Anyways I'm doing it right know. I'll get back to you.
I did pry it out and took the magnet off... painless(*) procedure and flea-sized magnet! don't loose!
I took a couple of pictures detailing the magnet position and the lid disassembled while still on the unit.
if you want to do this procedure do not loose the tiny screws and...
(*) be careful with the outer speaker (the one that lets you hear a call while the screen is facing the keyboard when closed), it isn't hard wired, it's just two small and fine contacts that might get distorted when putting the lid cover back... I had to take mine out again to correct this problem.
also, be careful with the screw driver and digitizer, as you'll be working in very akward positions to avoid disassembling the whole unit, and take off the battery of course.
Thanks for the photos - looks like my magnet feel out so I bought some 1/8 inch square magnets from ebay. It took a couple to find the sweet spot where the screen rotated but at least it works fibe now!

no problem. I'm also going to put the magnet back, now the unit doesn't now when it's closed, and therefore the outer speaker does not work. the screen also does not turn off when closed, only when the system timer tells it too... oh well.
you can turn the screen off by pressing the power button briefly.
no ext speaker though! maybe there's a way in software to disable just the rotation; i think the guys trying to get linux comfortable on the universal have some experience with it, maybe they can help.
