Subclassing windows in another process? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi folks,
I'm trying to subclass windows in another process (basically, I'm looking to capture keyboard and mouse events for a text prediction application). I've injected a dll in the process with keyboard focus (using PerformCallBack4), but have been unable to actually subclass a window in the target process.
My DLL performs the SetWindowLong(...), which appears to work (returns the previous window proc handle), but my wndproc is never getting called.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what I might be missing (or doing wrong) I'd be extremely grateful!

PS I've already succeeded in getting hardware keyboard input using a low-level keyboard hook... The problem is getting SIP activity and, ideally, mouse down & drag events.

Argh, well never mind me... great first impression...
I just noticed that it works fine. The breakpoint in my wndproc replacement simply wasn't being triggered by visual studio. Putting in some event counters show that I'm getting keystrokes and mouse events just fine. Guess it's on to the processing stage.

Strange WebBrowser behaviour

I created a little application in C# with VS2005 using the latest WM PocketPC SDK. It contains a form with a WebBrowser component which I fill with the help of the DocumentText property. When I put in short HTML segments that don't trigger the scrollbar everything is fine. As soon as I give it a little longer text the scrollbar appears but the component begins refreshing over and over again like I would set the DocumentText property all over again.
I don't have a clue what triggers this behaviour im definetly only setting the DocumentText property once and not in some kind of timer or thread.
I tried to google for it but no solution turned up.
Anybody ever ran into this problem or even better know how to fix it?

"Wrap" a Today plugin

I have a little project in mind, but would like some input from the pros to cut research time:
Is it possible to "wrap" a Today plugin dll with another, providing a "pass through" for operations (such as screen taps, etc)?
What I'm trying to accomplish is this: Add selectability and other one-handed d-pad operation to an older plugin that is not selectable.
What do you think?

This is specific to a single plugin - it would only keep track of one.
Perhaps plan B would be easier - a plugin that manipulates another plugin. Such that it would "appear" the older plugin was selected, etc. I guess I'd better go study some more...

Any plug-in DLL exports a function called InitCustomItem. In this function the plug-in does all its initialization, and creates its window. The return value is the handle to this window which you can subclass to add functionality.
as for selection, there is a value in the registry for each plug-in (HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items) which controls whether the system passes selection events to the plug-in or not.
it has three settings:
0 - non selectable, item will be skipped by the system.
1 - Automatic, the system will paint the item and handle selection on / off
2 - Manual, the system will pass the selection event to the item and the item will take care of the rest. In this mode the return value of the WM_ACTION determines whether the selection is moving on. This is good for multiline plug-ins that don't want to give up focus when arrow keys are pressed.

Hey, thanks for the response! I've set the Selectability registry item for the older plugin, and it's ignoring it - that's what started me on this little project.
I'm a software developer by trade, but not with C++, so I don't want to waste people's time here asking a lot of dumb questions. If you could point me in the right direction on a couple of things, I'll go off and learn:
1. If all I have is a dll and nothing else (no .defs, etc), can I determine all of the functions it exports (other than InitCustomItem)?
2. Process check: My custom plugin's InitCustomItem would call old-plugin's InitCustomItem, snagging old-plug's hwnd. New-plugin would then initialize it's own window - transparent(?) and pass that hwnd back to windows. Also, my custom plugin would pass all messages to old-plugin, etc. Theoretically, old-plug would look and operate like normal?
If this is already written, just sent me the code!
Well I am afraid it will be difficult to do all this without C++. As far as WM based devices are concerned you need to use something that translates in to native code to create system components like the plugins son ,no .NET languages, and embedded VB doesn't do well on anything never that WM 2003 (not even SE), plus I am not sure if you can make DLLs with it at all.
To your questions:
1) There is a tool which comes with VS 6 called Dependency Walker. It shows you what functions a given DLL exports, what it imports from other DLLs and what DLLs it is link to. Woks on EXE files as well.
If you can't get that, download a demo of IDA 5. It's the most powerful disassembler for WM devices out there.
2) Not sure, I never tried anything like that. The thing is, the system resizes the plugins, on initialization (it controls height) and when screen rotation changes so if you pass back HWND for a window other than the one visible, it might cause some problems.
I think what you should do is learn about subclassing. It's when you replace the procedure of an existing window with your own (just replace the function, not create new window). You then get all the messages for that window, you can do what you want and call the original function when you done.
By the way, if you want to learn about writing plugins there is an article with code samples on this site: www.pocketpcdn.com and a lot of other interesting stuff.

I don't have the old-plugin source code. My little project is to add some sort of d-pad operation to the WeatherPanel plugin, which you're probably familiar with.
Progress: I've written and deployed my first little plugin - based on the source code samples available in the internet.
Next step: In my InitializeCustomItem, I thought I'd try to call WeatherPanel's InitializeCustomItem (instead of creating my own window). Thing is, I don't yet know how to properly link the WeatherPanel dll to my project. As expected, it only exports two functions: InitializeCustomItem and CustomItemOptionsDlgProc (I used dumpbin.exe)
I'll keep plugging away - any input would be appreciated.

What a coincidence! My studying led me to the same functions.
From within my plugin's InitializeCustomItem, I was able to successfully load the dll with LoadLibrayl, GepProcAddress of its InitializeCustomeItem (at ordinal 240) and call it. But it whacks the Today screen so that none of the plugins load.
Next I thought I'd try FindWindow and EnumChildWindows to find it and all it's children. Then manipulate them by sending messages...

Update: So far, so good. As it turns out, EnumChildWindows doesn't work on the PPC, so I used GetWindow to find the plugin's handle. I can successfully send messages to it and initiate various actions.
Question: I'd like to visually indicate (on the old-plugin) what's being clicked (such as drawing a box around it). Is it possible to draw things outside of my own window?
It is, but it's tricky.
You can always use the GetDC function to retrieve the DC for another window and paint on it, but the problem is that unless you subclass the window you have no way of knowing when it repaints it self and all your changes are erased.

I tried that exact thing (GetDC) and drew a rectangle in it, but it didn't do anything. I realized the reason was the WM_Paint event wasn't firing on old-plugin, and when it did, my stuff was erased (just like you said).
Next idea - open my own dialog window than overlays old-plug. The entire window needs to be transparent - except for the visual indicators that I position where I want. When the user ok's, I close the window and send the click to old-plugin...

No offence, but with all these rather advanced programming tricks you are attempting just to "sup up" an old weather plugin it looks to me like you would be better off just writing the whole thing from scratch.
It you are familiar with WinInet and / or sockets this should be pretty easy and it will look and work much better than the hack you are attempting now.
Plus you can make it exactly the way you like.

No offence taken. I thought of that, but I figured this would be a good way to cut my teeth a little. Once I complete this little project, I may pursue that route...

If I would move some of the plugin-dll's from \Windows to \Storage Card, would it be enough to change the adress within the corresponding item in the registry entry HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Today/Items ?

It won't work.
The problem is that the SD card is mounted too late so if you put the plugins on it they will not be loaded when device boots up.
You can move them to the extended ROM this way or to a folder other than windows but there is no way to move start-up stuff to SD.

It's finished. The app is called WP-Pilot and it provides one-handed operation of WeatherPanel. If anyone's interested, it can be found here. Here's how it ended up:
There's a plugin (WP-PilotPlugin.dll) with an options dialog, and an executable (WP-Pilot.exe).
When the plugin gets selected, it looks for Weatherpanel. If it finds it, it fires off WP-Pilot.exe
WP-Pilot.exe opens. It does this stuff:
Look for WeatherPanel, and get it's screen coordinates.
Read the registry and determine which layout file WeatherPanel is using.
Open the layout file and read it: Record the coordinates of each "clickable" item found. This was a real PITA because of Unicode.
Sort the coordinates for left-to-right, top-to-bottom order.
Select the first coordinate and position a tiny window (10x10) at that x-y position.
Draw a "pointer" in the window (the type and color depends on what's selected in the options).
Show the window and process input:
[*]Left/right pressed - selected the next/previous coordinate and move the window to that location.
[*]Up/down pressed - close WP-Pilot and tell the plugin we're done.
[*]Center button pushed:
[*]Send a mouse click to the WeatherPanel plugin at the coordinates
[*]Close WP-Pilot and tell the plugin we're done.​

Simple Programming Question embedded VC++

I'm currently doing some programs myself with the free MS embedded VC++.. and I'm finding it comfortable to do a simple dialog-based programs for PPC. I think I can have most of the background code going, and I've just got the GUI .. alright.
Now the question, how do I do a copy/paste to/from clipboard? I had most of the stuff done using the included MFC Wizard. I can get and send data to/from an EditBox (TextBox, whatever you call it). However, the click-hold thing on PPC doesn't seems to work on my EditBox, and hence I'm thinking what's needed to enable a simple Copy/Paste on an EditBox.

Things somewhat works. I'm not really sure which part I've got wrong. I'm suspecting some memory allocation is giving me problems. The thing is, if I were to use 'CF_UNICODETEXT' on the 'SetClipboardData(x,x)' line, I get something to paste on other programs (PPC Notes). BUT, the thing pasted is some funny stuff (e.g. letters that cannot be rendered, hence I get the little squares). If I were to use 'CF_TEXT', I don't seems to able to send my stuff to the clipboard or it made it invalid for (PPC Notes) pasting (e.g. I'm not able to paste it in PPC Notes).

Odd I didn't notice this thread sooner.
Any way if you still having problems with this code here is the solution:
You are working with char and strcpy so your text is in ASCII (each letter one byte).
But you are calling SetClipboardData with CF_UNICODETEXT so it expects WCHAR (UNICODE) where each letter is two bytes.
The strange letters are the result of two consecutive bytes being interpreted as a single letter (probably lends you in Chinese or Japanese region of the Unicode table)
Windows mobile doesn't usually work with ASCII so the text you get from the edit box will already be in Unicode and won't give you any trouble.
The code should look like this:

I never used the clipboard APIs my self so I can't guide you farther but this code should work.

You code works wonderfully.. just the final code "LocalFree(clipbuffer);" seems to cause problems. Without that, it works. I'm not sure if it will cause a memory leak.. but that's not much of my concern now

I am working from Ubuntu right know (Linux distro in case you didn't know) so I do not have access to my off-line MSDN files, but I recommend you check out the documentation for SetClipboardData.
It is possible it releases the memory it self so when you call LocalFree the handle is no longer valid.
That could also be the reason why you need to allocate memory instead of passing it the string directly.
As for LPCTSTR it is simple and not C++ related:

Its M$ way of saying Long Pointer to Constant STRing
T changes meaning based on what you are working with:
If you work with ASCII TCHAR is char
If you work with Unicode TCHAR is WCHAR
Basically these are just all redefinitions of variable types so you can distinguish what they are used for.
In C++ you can overload operators. For example you can have a function which changes the way ++ works with certain types of variables.
In our case CString class has a function which determines what happens when you try to cast (convert) it to a pointer to string.
Thats all the "magi" code.

Since I had to go in to XP anyway (to change PDAMobiz ROM which kept hanging at random and didn't let me use BT to latest PDAViet which for now seem very good) I took a quick peek at the help files.
Here is why you should not release the memory:
After SetClipboardData is called, the system owns the object identified by the hMem parameter. The application can read the data, but must not free the handle or leave it locked. If the hMem parameter identifies a memory object, the object must have been allocated using the LocalAlloc function

levenum, thanks. You've got me almost there. There are several stuff I need to polish up though. Attach is a pre-mature version of what I wanted to do. There are several issues (including the fact that, only the 4 characters of the password are effectively used, which can be easily fix, I think. Just need to find the bug and squash it) that I like to polish up. They are sorted in order of importance (to me):
[1] Keyboard (SIP) pop up.
For this, I digged around and got to know that the function
"SHSipPreference( HWND, SIP_UP)" is the one to used. However, it never did what it suppose to do. I have had it put inside the "OnSetfocusConfirmPasswordEdit()" of the edit box, which should be called when it is set focus. I suspect that is I haven't set the HWND correctly. I have tried "NULL" and also tried using the "CWnd* pParent" from my dialog constructor (generated code my MFC Wizard). None of them worked.
[2] Editbox focusing.
For some reason, the focus on my main-dialog is correct on the editbox of the 'message'. However, on the dialog which is to confirm the password (which I called using

I was trying to make the 2nd confirm password dialog smaller, something like a pop up in the PPC rather than something that take up the whole screen without much contents in it. How would you go about doing that? Is it not possible in PPC? E.g, if you were to use Total Commander, and start copying files around, they do have a pop up that does take up the entire screen. I'm suspecting I shouldn't do a "confirmPasswordDlg.DoModal()", and should some what do something myself. I have tried, SetVisible(1) thing, but that doesn't work. Or it shouldn't meant to work because my 1st screen is a dialog screen?

I would like to have a function of which after a certain period of idle time, it will clear off the clipboard and close itself. How would I go about doing this? Some sort of background thread thing?

In your CConfirmPasswordDlg::OnInitDialog handler, call GetDlgItem(confirmPasswordEdit).SetFocus() and return FALSE. That should handle the focus and possibly the SIP popup.

which I suspect the 'g_pParent' is NULL. If it is NULL, would it work?
Ok, I haven't used MFC for a while and almost not at all on PPC but I will give this a shot:
1) MFC forces dialogs to be full-screen. Here is a detailed explanation on how to change that. Note that for some reason this will work only once if you use the same variable (object) to create the dialog several times.
If you use a local variable in say a button handler thats not a problem because the object is destroyed when you exit the function.
2) There is a simple SetTimer API. You can give it a window handle and then add an OnTimer message handler to that window. Or you could give it a separate function which will be called (say TimerProc). In that case you can give it NULL as window handle.
Note that CWnd objects have a member function with the same name (SetTimer) which sets the timer with that window handle (so that window will receive WM_TIMER message). If you want the raw API call ::SetTimer.
Also note that the timer will continue to send messages / call your special function every x milliseconds until you call KillTimer.
3) I am not sure what the problem with the SIP is. CWnd and derived classes like CDialog have a function called GetSafeHwnd (or GetSafeHandle, I don't remember exact name). Try passing that to SHSipPreference.
If that does not work here is an article with an alternate solution.

Non maximized windows works using the code suggested at the page. Although I still do not understand where the heck this '.m_bFullScreen' property came from. It is not anywhere obvious to be seen.

Couple of comments:
1) Somewhere at the top of the cpp file, if I am not mistaking there is something called a message map. It's a bunch of macros that lets MFC know what window messages it handles. An entry there is what was missing when you added the function manually.
2) m_bFullScreen is just another among many undocumented features. M$ likes to keep developers in the dark. For instance WM 2003 and up have an API called SHLoadImage which can load bmp, gif, jpg and some other formats and return HBITMAP which all the usual GDI functions use.
This API was undocumented until WM 5 came out and even then they said it only works for gif...

The return value indicates whether or not the standard dialog handler (which calls your OnInitDialog) should handle setting the focus. As a rule, OnInitDialog should return TRUE, unless you change the focus within the handler (or you're doing an OCX property page on big Windows).
I haven't done much WinMob/CE development -- I've been doing big Windows for 15+ years, so window message handling is pretty much second nature. I started doing Windows development back in the days when you didn't have C++ or MFC boilerplate; you had to implement your own DialogProc, crack the messages yourself, etc. It's a lot easier now.

Not much of a major issue, but rather an annoying thing I've found. Probably that's what evc/mfc/m$ intended to do that.
Anyway, I'm starting my way of getting around CommandBar. I created a MFC skeleton, studied the code, and that's what I've found, after I've created a CommandBar/MenuBar on evc and putting it in

where I have the variable 'CCeCommandBar m_mainMenuBar' and I have created a MenuBar on evc with the Id 'IDR_MAINMENUBAR'. The menu bar works flawlessly on my dialog based application, when I have the 1st level as a pop up. Example
MenuBar --> 'File' --> 'New', 'Save'
Where 'File' is a folder-like thing that pop-ups and show the contents (i.e. in this example, 'New', and 'Save'). However, given the SAME code to load the CommandBar/MenuBar, it will not work, if I were to put the actual command at 1st level. Example, this will not work
MenuBar -> 'New', 'Save'
where there isn't any folder-like pop-up to store the commands 'New', and 'Save'.
I know that I can have buttons for these commands, and probably works. But, what I'm trying to do is to utilize the bottom-left-right softkey in WM5/6. If I were to have the 'File'->'New','Save' structure, it works fine with WM5, showing it as a softkey. But, if I were to do just 'New','Save' it will not show up in both WM2003 emulator and WM5.
As a matter of fact, even if I have (say) File->New,Load, and I added a new command (i.e. not folder-like-pop-up), example 'Help' on the CommandBar/MenuBar, the File->New,Load will not show up too. It seems like the 1st level command (ie. without a folder-pop-up), causes some problems and stop it from loading further.

Any way if you still having problems with this code here is the solution:
You are working with char and strcpy so your text is in ASCII (each letter one byte).
But you are calling SetClipboardData with CF_UNICODETEXT so it expects WCHAR (UNICODE) where each letter is two bytes.
The strange letters are the result of two consecutive bytes being interpreted as a single letter (probably lends you in Chinese or Japanese region of the Unicode table)
Windows mobile doesn't usually work with ASCII so the text you get from the edit box will already be in Unicode and won't give you any trouble.
The code should look like this:

I never used the clipboard APIs my self so I can't guide you farther but this code should work.

I know it is a bit late! But there is a mistake the code snippet:
HLOCAL clipbuffer = LocalAlloc(0, test.GetLength() * 2); //remember: every letter 2 bytes long!
needs to be
HLOCAL clipbuffer = LocalAlloc(0, test.GetLength() * 2+2);
the terminating 0 is als 2 bytes long!
Those errors are sometimes fatal, with very less chance to find them!

[APP]SensorMaze - a little game

I wrote this little program, called SensorMaze. It generates mazes and allows you to steer a little blue dot using the movement sensors in the HTC Diamond. It is based on the original SensorTest program and since it has been a while since I programmed for any PDA, it is a bit simple.
Usage:
Try to send the blue dot to the red dot by tilting your Diamond in the required directions.
Commands:
- New Maze: create a new maze in the same level
- Next Level: increase the complexity.
As mentioned, it is my first attempt, so there is still some work that needs to be done.
TODO:
- Implement timer, so you can compete against yourself
- remove the "Position" text and replace with timer output
- MessageBox instead of Dialog ?
- Replace the blue dot with a "ball" like structure
- Release the source code (after cleaning it a bit more)
Question:
When I try to use MessageBox from my code, the MessageBox fails to close and I can never get back to the Shell without a reset. Any one any idea what I could be doing wrong here ?
Changes ( 07-Aug-2008)
- Replaced the target with a cheese and the moving dot with a mouse icon.
- Added some text to show the current level.
- Initial level is lowered, so that kids could play it too.
Screenshots are provided in the attached .png files. I also added the sources, so that other people can see how you can use the acceleration meter

just tested, awsome little game! keep working on this! perhaps add some vibration and sound feedback, maybe change the dots to somthing like a mouse and some cheese? if you changed it to a ball it may be too simaler to teeter?

I haven't had any issues using C#.Net ... what are you writing in? The only thing I can think of is to make sure the MessageBox is shown from the same thread that created the form.
Really like the concept - gave it a play, and it works well! Looking forward to new and improved versions!

Thanks for the reviews. I will implement the changes, like the mouse and the cheese. I am currently working on an other "gadget" application, as soon as that one is finished I will take care of it.
As for the question about the MessageBox, I use C++ in this program and have a workaround, so I will let it at rest for the moment.
I will try to get some screendumps too later.

I love this little game. However I found that in challenging myself and advancing the game to higher levels, the little white mouse became rather difficult to see as he became smaller. Perhaps changing the colour f the mouse or the colour of the paths in the maze. Currently the mouse and the maze are the same colour. other than that the game is great.
Awesome program, but I feel like I'm epileptic now, the screen was constantly flickering during it, I think it's a compatibility issue with my Raphael.

you need to replace the sensor.dll file with the Samsung's...it is preinstalled with HTCs. Change that file and it should work fine.
I replaced sensor.dll with Samsung's .. but the problem is still persisting.. what shall i do now?
It would be nice if this could work on our LGs.

Hi, i downloaded this last night for one reason and one reason only (for now anyway) - to play championship manager and i managed to get it start a new game it took over an hour to do it and then simple things like changing pages takes over a min so it esentially unplayable.
Other that great work and i wish i could be of more help but im afraid ive never done any software programming in my life

I am really enjoying adosbox right now on my Transformer, but lack of 3.1 mouse support has saddened me to the point where I compiled from source myself. I have it working sort of (on the java end), but because the build screen size doesn't match with the actual screen size, I am having issues with the mouse not following perfectly. I would like to get mouse support working better for 3.1 devices (and probably better emulation going for pre 3.1 devices), but I need to edit some of the C files for that. Unfortunately I have not done much native code on Android, so I am running into problems compiling. The ndk-build script seems to fail on me with an error of "missing separator" in the SDL-1.2 make file. Sadly I have never used make so I don't know how to correct it.
Today I saw the build_instructions.txt in jni/application/dosbox/. Are you building through this instead of the ndk (do I need to get gcc ARM cross compiling installed on my linux box)? In either case where does the dosbox-0.74-cfg-pelyaSDL.tar.gz come from?
Any help you could give me in getting the native part to build would be appreciated. Then I can focus on getting some usability stuff working and throw patches your way.

I've installed adosbox 0.2.5 on my Desire Z.
I've tried to run some apps and games.
Dos Navigaror: Usable.
1. Mouse trackpad emulation works quite well, however it only moves in x,y axis separately. No intermediate directions (I suppose the hardware does not allow it). Any possibilities to solve this?
2. Touch screen mouse movement works quite well - however with delay.
2a. Well, sometimes there is no mouse. I swing on the screen with no effect.
3. It does not respond to screen tap as a left mouse click. Well it works sometimes. I have no control on that.
3a It does not respond to double tap (double click) at all.
4. No possibility to bind/emulate arrow keys. I can't find such function in dosbox menus. ---edit --- I could bind some keys but... see the edit part down there.
5. On PC I've been using config to autostart Dos Navigator with dosbox start. How to do it on Android? I couldn't find .conf file on my device.
System shock: starts but unplayable.
1. I've got a slide show. I've increased the CPU cycle to 1000 even to 2500 with no satisfactory effect.
2. On screen mouse movement works but the cursor jumps into different position when tapping.
3. With no option for binding keys this game is 100% unplayable.
Hocus Pocus: works but no arrow keys.
1. It starts nicely.
2. It reacts on "FN" key - the hero is shooting.
3. However no hardware arrow keys makes the game unplayable. Moving with trackpad sucks so much that the game is unplayable.
Oxyd Magnum: Playable but not exciting.
1. It react on taping the screen.
2. On screen mouse works well but with some ugly delay. This takes out most of the fun.
So the main issues I see are the cpu speed, mouse delay and the hw keys binding.
You are making a great job.
However making dos games being fun on the phone needs good controls workaround. Without that - no fun.

Keys binding:
The .dosbox\mapper-0.74.map file (the file for binding keys) can not be found from the phone level. It must be done from a PC level. It's not a big issue but what to hide the file for?
After rebinding left FN, left shift and tab keys Hocus Pocus is quite playable.
It would be nice if you provide us the list of numbers for HW keys on some devices.
I can't bind "menu" as right arrow. And I can't bind search, sym, and the two shortcut keys. They are left useles.
And binding some keys as arrows disables trackpad!
Sound:
No mater what number I set for cycles I can't make the sound to play smoothly.
Any suggestions?
Someone knowns the makefile system for adosbox "libapplication.so"?

I am using aDOSBox to run QBASIC (yes I know there are "better" and "faster" interpreters/compliers, but some have bad issues, see one comment about writting files on X-11 BASIC, others have a max file size) with an external keyboard (so I can see the screen while typing - can you make the virtual keyboard transparent?).
I have found that some keys do not work nor processed correctly in this version (freshly gotten from Google Play), namely the "." when shifted (I get ":" every time, all other punction keys appear to be fine). At first I though this was a KCM problem (had problems with mismapped keys on a Droid X), but while I was briefly able to rooted my tablet (someone please read/question my post/question about the Azpen A701 rooting) I was able to view the generic.kcm and other kcm files (lost root right after this) and those files define the shift period combination correctly. Also I get a ">" when I hit that combination in the 920 Text Editor.
Function keys seem to send to Android key processes (opening/launching other apps) instead of work in the program. Insert, Delete, Home, and End do not seem to be working at all.
