Hi, I was wondering how to set a custom ringing tone for the incomming calls. I tried with MP3 and WMA formats, placing them in My Music and Windows folders. Nothing. The ring tone list just doesn't include my file.
What's the trick?

Makes muuch more sense, thanks a lot
But for the alarms? \Windows and \Windows\Rings don't work.
for alarms you would have to use .wav format files...just paste them in the windows folder and you should be able to select the tone you want when setting up the alarm or reminder.
Alarm must be in wav format, and place in \windows, ringtone can be in \windows\rings or \Storage Card
For alarms, you can use Pocket WakeUp 1.1 and so use MP3 Files

Hi all
Juz would like to check if anyone can advise me if the phone tones can be use as alarm tones? I remembered XDA allows me to use phone tones as alarm tones.
Sure. But you have to use File Explorer to copy the ring tones from "\Windows\Rings" to "\Windows".
Tried... But still can't get the ring tone into the alarm tone list... Is there anything else that I need to do??
If the audio file is a compressed WAV file, it won't show up in the list of sounds. You should use only uncompressed WAV files.
How to differential between compressed and uncompressed wav files? The icon shown in the windows explorer looks the same as the rest of the alarm tone.
right click on the file on the pc and choose properties
choose summary
audio format should be pcm
Checked... It's a Midi file... So no way to use it as a alarm tone?
I put my .mp3 ringtone at /Windows/Rings and set my ringtone to that MP3.
It should work, right?
 But it always kick back to boring Windows Default !!!
I have to set it back everytime.
Any idea?
i m not that sure but i guess it can only use WMA or WAV ringtones
Try to transform your .mp3 into .wma (same quality / size)
try to make short ringtones, no more than 20sec.

jarmsk, I got my K-Jam the other day and placed some MP3 files into the rings folder to use as ringtones. Utilising MS Outlook, I have assigned MP3 tones to different people with no difficulty at all. Are you using Outlook or another PIM (such as Pocket Informant).
Sorry that I can not offer any advice on how to get it working on your device but I just wanted to let you know that it is possible and that it does work.
The ringtones that I assigned to each person in my contact, are working correctly.
The only problem is the ringtone that I assigned as the default ringtone.
I tried change convert from mp3 to wma but it always kick back to the original default ringtone.
I didn't use any other PIM just the one from the factory.
Any idea guys?

You got eg. pocket music installed?
Some programs is associate the MP3 as their default.
That can be the problem, just try to uncheck Mp3 in that kind of software..
notem screwed my mp3 ringtones up. uninstalled it but still windows default so converted them to wma and work fine now. had to reassign tone for each contact again.
is there a registry hack to revert things back?
mp3 ringtones for wizard
You can use it, no problem, I've tried my old magician mp3.cab file, it is working with wizard. Find it here, somewhere on magician forum.
Yes but why do we have to store our files in the Rings folder??
Any way to use the SD card? I have fifty or so ringtones, they take too much space if I place them all in the Rings Folder.
If you use the original explorer you can assign mp3 as your ringtone
just browse with the original explorer on your wizard to the mp3 file ...anywhere it doesnt mather
tap and hold on on the mp3 file.....in the drop down menu there is a selection for "set as ringtone"...when you select this, the file will be copied to the rings folder in windows. it also works for me by just copying them to the rings folder

that's exactly a problem. in my case i have gsplayer associated with mp3 files so mp3's as ringtones never work (only windows default ringtone). when i uncheck mp3 association in gsplayer, mp3 ringtones are working fine... now i'm converting ringtones into wma format as a workaround of this problem.
How can i set an Mp3 or wav as ringtone alert?
Thanks
I want to now that too? i have tried set the tones in my device/windows where all the alert/notification are but not working?? why is that? you dont see the tone in the list att all when you set a notification tone. I have tried mp3 wav wma tones.
what I did (and which is working) : I have 2 sounds that I wanted to use (1 for sms alert and another one as ringtone for my phone). the ringtone, I converted it to mp3 (mono, 96kbps) and put it in the windows\rings folder. for the sms alert, I left it as wav and put it in windows folder (mp3 wasn't recognized). in that way, they both appear at the right place in sound/notifications.
Ok, so you must convert the sounds? if you want to use them as notification tone. Thanx! gamin, I try that!
You can use ether MP3 or WAV as a ringtone, but only WAV for SMS.
SMS tones need to be in the windows folder.
If you want to use an MP3 as a ringtone all you have to do is hold the stylus on the MP3 to get the menu up and select "set as ringtone".
I know this works in WM6 but not sure about WM5.
does it exists a software to manage rings (for all alerts)?
Thanks
Hi, how to use wav or mp3 files as ringtone or message alert tone? My device is X01HT.
Have a nice day.

For notification audio, put the audio files into the \Windows\ folder (via ActiveSync or from the memory card via File Explorer). Ringtones need to go into \Windows\Rings.
Once the files are there you can just choose them from the dropdown lists in Sounds and Notifications.
I tried that and it did not work. I then looked at the properties of one of the built in alarm wavs. I converted my wav to the same bitrate, mono, 22hz and then it worked.

I would also like to know a good freeware to make ringtones on my xp pc for the ppc? is it mp3cutter?
And what format (ie. wav) & bitrate is recommended for ringtones?
I guess I cheat a lil...
I go to the website and listen to the ring-tines using Internet Explorer. I then go to my Temporary Internet Folder, pull out the MP3 files that I liked.
I tried everything, to put mp3 in windows/rings, in winndows , and in my documents/my ringtones and nothing. When i go to the sound options i can set it for phone ringtone but when i choose new text message there is no mp3
think only ringtones can be mp3 think other notifications have to be wav

Not really true I don't know the reason for this but sometimes for notifications to recognize Mp3's you can either place the Mp3 on the root of the SD card or place in the /windows directory which you can acess it from a software called Total Commander.
Hope it helps
