ok here is the challenge, now some of us know the horror of a lost or stolen phone. Who has it? Where is it? Can i track it? Well thats where this challenge comes in. We all know about the extended rom , most people dont think that u can mess with this but actually you can. For those who dont know what the extended rom is, it a file folder that contains all the cab files that are used to restore your pda back to factory preinstalled. Well i know that using some programs you can actually edit or delete files in this folder. What i propose or challenge the coders to see if they can come up with a cab file or program that can be placed into the E.R. so that if someone hard resets the pda, that when it comes back and resets it would set off the cab file to collect information like the phone number of the new sim card the thieves put in the stolen unit, and or any other info that can be used to track this device. to email it or say call you at a certian time. Point is that if you can get the number of the person that has your phone, you can get it traced and at least get the cops to go to the address that the new sim card is registered to.
Wow, I like that idea.
I was actually coding it so that the first thing it would do is execute a full-screen lock and you'd have to enter a preset passcode. The only way to get around anything in the Extended ROM though is by performing a soft-reset during the 3-second pause.
The problem with the current WM5 HTC devices (Wizard, Universal, and Apache) is that they have a digital signature feature enabled by default. So I can't hack the Autorun (even if I could) to bypass the 3-second pause, since that would break the authentication of the digital signature.
I could, however, disable the security on the Wizard and Universal with a digitally-signed CAB file found in the Apache's Extended ROM...
If someone could teach me how to access the SIM, that would be key...
Um, am I missing something or isn't this what IIWPO does (for the WM2003/SE devices anyway)? As soon as someone changes the owner info. and puts in a new SIM, it SMS's you the details - I already have it installed in my ext.ROM.
For the WM2005 devices it might not work but it's currently protecting my XdaII.
can you provide a link for iipwo
no sim
doesnt seem like that program access the sim, it seems that it relys on the new owner to input their information, but how many of us actually do that. i dont for sure. so if the new owner doesnt imput their contact info then there is no way of finding them, where as i propose to make come up with a way to read the sim and get the phone number, that way its definatly going to get them

It's here on xda-dev, just search. Oh, and it's iiWPo not iipwo.

They don't need to, all it does is compare the existing text (or lack of) with the stored value (your own), then gets any data and sends it. If nothing else you'll get the phone number as part of the SMS. If they DO enter info (and most people I know do, just in case it is returned if lost), then you get that too.
You also get the satisfaction of slowly racking up their bill for them if they are charged for SMS and if they query it and the telco starts to ask questions about where the 'faulty' handset came from or suggests it goes for repair... Gotcha!
wm5
isnt this only for WM 2003? has anyone got this to Work on a WiZard ?
if someone steals/finds a wizard then what are the chances they will know how to or even if you can hard reset it? and the ones "in the know" might just install a new/default rom image overwriting whats on the modified ext rom.
what you need is something that executes on maybe the 2nd or 3rd incorrect pin number entry.
not true
thats not true , u can get a manual at imate to show u how to hard reset. but there is no manual unless u read these kind of forums. most theives are crack heads that just take the phone to see if they can sell it for money. no knoledge of these devices
what i mean is there is no manual to enter the extended rom unless u read these kinda forum, we are fanatics
iiwpo relies on security by obscurity.
It works quite well on Walaby and Himalay.
If put into extROM it will be installed after hard reset as well (but since it is not signed the user wil get the ability to cancel in WM5.
I am planning to test its functionality on WM5 with my new Wizard.
BTW: Anyone allready has a ExtROM editor to bypass the read-only protection in newer ROMs?
Hi wondering if someone can help.
In the latest rom update from O2 if you install the active UI it will give you a battery today plugin which is quite handy.
Now my question we all know the ActiveUI is horrible will slow down the exec and take up to much space. Is there anyway of stripping out this battery today plugin form the ActiveUI and creating a cab file so it will just install this part. I think the file that is needed from the ActiveUI is BatteryNFO.
Many Thanks
Scott
Wow 50 views and still no one got an answer????
Got to say I'd love this too. I've tried other battery monitors, and none are as good as that one.
Ok i have been looking in to this since i posted and have extracted the signed_UNI_o2AUI4_build88.cab file to my home machine. From What i can see there are 7 files that could be related to this 4 of which start with batter~1.029 and so on the other 3 start with power_~1.070. is there anyway of telling what these files are actually for.
Im no expert at this but surely it can be done as i have seen people have ripped the connection settings from this cab file before so surely the same sort of thing can be done with this.
Cheers
Scott
i agree...looks quite nice this battery plug-in...hope sum1 finds a way of getting it as a cab file soon
Still looking in to this and not going to let it beat me to.
Has anybody ever used this software before.
http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=12093
MagicCab PocketPC CAB extractor 0.63
It looks like it is going to do what i need and be able to strip out the battery today plugin from the cab and even tell us what reg settings we need to enter to if i am reading it right but before i commit myself to the $10.95 has anyone ever used it before to clarify that it will do what i need it to do.
If you want something more professional use WCE CAB Manager.
Why not use Batti ?
It gives you just as much information, doesn't take up valuable Today space or slow down your machine, is visible in every application not just Today, and runs in just 20K. And it's free
Right
So far with the advice given to me by ibendlin about wince cab manager and after several hard resets (trial and error thank god for spbpocket backup lol) i have manged to get half way there. But i am having a problem getting the skins to work
As you can see i have manged to sort the today plugin but im having problems getting the skins working even after a soft reset.
Maybe someone can offer some advice i will gladly forward the cab that i have created so far if anyone can offer some suggestions.
Ineedtoys: So far i have manged to get this down to 14kb as for the space on the today screen user preference really, but thank you for your advice on batti.
Anyway off to bed will work on this some more tomorrow
OK, if you dont activate the ActiveUI thing in programs then you can have life without it. To get it to go away now that its on goto \windows\startup and delete the ActiveUI file in there. You cant seem to unistall the program. I just avoid the icon like the pluage.
There are more complex ways of getting what your looking for, but this one is simple and effective
JAmes
ps. then soft reset
Hi James
Tis true what you are saying and this way will work but unfortunatly you will also get about 10mb worth of extra programs installed from the activeUI which take up the oh so precious Device storage space where the actual battery bar it's self only takes up around 14kb
But thanks anyway
yeah but the newer people to the scene might not like playing about with things. I've only just got use to playing about with stuff and up untill now I've been using this solution.
Now i've had the phone a wee while i'm happy to start going for corporate mode but was easier not to when i was just getting use to the whole PDA type stuff
JAmes
I know what you mean we all had to start somewhere right lol.
I stopped using the the personal install about a month after i had my exec it was only through advice from these forums that i actually found out how much space the activeUI took up and also how much it slowed it down.
I use this one:
it shows 2 lines: one for main Battery status and one for Backup Battery status (no more exists in WM5); it works well
tried this one but I still think the one in the latest rom release from O2 looks sharper/prettier....
Yeah i'm planning on giving up the basic mode soon.
let me know how you get on, as I too like this battery meter.

I Have done it, Sort of. Still a few bugs but i don't think i will be able to sort these limited knowledge and already about 10 hard reset's.
I have been using now for around 8 or 9 hours now and all seems to be fine after the install no memory loss or anything.
Works well in True VGA to.
congrats m8..any chance of u posting the cab file here?
hiya scotjen,
dont mind you posting it out here??
thanks...
damn, I still have a Champions League game against Arsenal later.
got to get back to training soon
Well done.
What bugs are you still experiencing. Maybe someone could advise you further?
Hello one and all.
I have been looking at this forum for about 1 week and i'm still none the wiser. This may be because I have no idea what im doing and I am a little worried about making rom changes as I have no experinace of this.
I have a 02 exec. Which i am happy with but its a bit slower than I thought it would be. The phone seams to mess around when answering.
I have booted it up as normal on the basic setting.
A few questions that I have :-
What is the best setting to boot up on basic or corperate with the code ?
What reg changes are critical to boost performance ?
Any Software that I should get for the Xda ?
VGA settings do I need to change them ? What effect does it have.
Any advise would be good. If it could be given in a format my 2 year old could understand that would be good for me.
Thank you in advance
You'll find a wealth of information on each of your questions by browsing & searching the posts already on this forum.
thanks moandal that's why I posted.
1 post says basic setup another say corporate. 1 post says hack this that and the other. another says not to.
I'm new to pocket pc.
these forums do not make it clear what is best.
example radio version 1.06 or 1.08 at least 3 posts on here saying each one is better than the other. I have no idea.
all I was asking for is some guidance as to which set up has worked best for people.
@CRJL you've one up on me mate - I did not even know this thing had two modes!!!
BTW, why is that? Someone mentioned somewhere a corporate password - how to enter this & why would I want it.
BTW CRJL, I agree with you, these little devices are very confusing, espcially because the front end software (WM5) is soooooooo labourious!
Andy
when you hard reset the thing. after all the rom stuff loads up it gives you the choice of basic set up or corporate. it selects basic automatically after 20secs.
if you tell it corporate then you have to put the code 0506 in. this the uninstalls some stuff off the exec. you loose mms and all the gprs an 3g settings for conecting to the net. (i don't know what else it does) some of the people in the forums say it makes the exec faster. I could not really notice any difference.
you loose a few applications as well.
until I learn more I'm staying in basic.
I find these forums are for more advanced users so the simple questions tend to get missed. (im talking abot my first post) still not had a reply answering my questions

for this you should first make a hard reset (carefull, with hard reset you will loose all data!) by pressing both app buttons and reset at the same time.
When it starts up, after the installation countdown shows up you should make a reset to stop the automatic setup.
Now you have a machine, which is only basic setup. See how you like the things in there.
After you now enough about this, you can make same hard reset again and start the corporate setup. Then see, how you like this setup.
After this do same with basic setup.
In total you have then an idea, what you can have with the 3 different setups.
Now you can decide, which of the 3 setups you want to start with. After this, you should read the posts about Extended Rom, how to unlock it, which programs are in there etc. Then you get an idea for example how to install some software in the basic setup.
Also, you can add some programs from other Roms. For example I have an MDA Pro and I added the I-Mate Backgammon game to my setup.
Try out and see what customizations you want and need, which you do not want.

Basically, this does not really make difference. Forget about reg changes. Performance depends on running programs and setup - see above.
As far as I know, o2 installs some app in the basic setup, which makes the device slow. As I never tried o2 rom, I do not know, if this is true.

read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=31697
here also I recommend to try out the software and just keep the ones you like.
In total I would recommend you to create a directory on your PC where you put all the setup and cab files, which you want to have in your final setup. After trying out all, make a hard reset again and install the files from this directory. This prevents any junks to be left behind from your previous tries.

I think, you get more problems than it helps. Some programs appear too small on the screen. And when you make a Romupdate this does not work anymore.
I recommend not to install any VGA Patches. Instead just set the text size to more small and search in this forum for some registry hacks to change system font etc. and see if you like it, when the font is more small (this is good for Opera or PIE as you can view complete page!)
Nice reply, thanks mate!
erm
yes
ahem
erm
what are the ><ahem, ahem>< "app buttons"
Andy (thicky wicky Blacky wacky Adder)
thank you. I will give the 3 setups a go. I did read that if you soft reset before the counter that video calling does not work.
will give it a go and see what happens I'm sure there will be a cab file on here to sort it out.
anyone wishing to add any pearls of wisdom fee free. I'm learning more and more all the time.
app buttons: the buttons on the keyboard, which have changing functions. these functions are shown at the bottom of the screen. These buttons can be found to the right and left of the red and green call buttons on the keyboard.
about video calling: yes, this feature is installed after you switch on first your device. it is activated with one cab file. If you can find out which cab file this is, you can install it manually in the basic setup.
Ok so i just bought my new HD2 Just arrived last week, And Yah its freezing like most are, I have heard numerous fixes to this I guess flashing Roms or installing apps. I dont know if this thread is in the right category, but can someone help me fix the phone so it doesnt freeze everyday when i use texts and run smoother overall? I dont know how to flash roms or tweak any of these replies can someone help me please? I tried Custom window home tabs app but it got rid of the home screen so i took it out.. please someone help me .... i have yahoo, aim and msn messenger email or just reply on here ? thanks guys
try HR-hard reset.
1.turn your phone off
2.press and hold volume up&down buttons same time and turn your phone on
it will reset and restore it to the factory settings
This should help
I was in the same position 4 months ago... it's a steep learning curve!
In no particular order:
1. Get your phone and PC hooked up with activesync.
2. Learn how '.cab' files work - you basically just transfer them to your phone (I use activesync) and run them to install various things.
3. Get Resco Registry - this is a registry explorer which I find very intuitive and useful for changing registry values.
4. Have a look around this site, notably the tweaks threads, and see what you like.
5. When you are comfortable with the handset, look into upgrading your ROM. I started on Vodafone 1.43 ROM, but have since upgraded to Vodafone 1.66 ROM. It is very easy to upgrade to official ROMs (at least it was for Vodafone) - I image the manufacturers will give you a step-by-step guide.
6. Get Cookie's Home Tab!
Can you tell what ROM/Radio/Manila version you are currently on?
(Go to settings/about phone/software information)

I don't know where you got the idea that most phones are freezing, because if that was the issue this phone would not be nearly as popular as it is.
* If you got the phone from your provider go to them.
* Try a hard reset, make no changes (tweaks, software installs) and see if the problem is gone. If so then something you did is causing the problem.
* Find a stable ROM in the development forum and learn to flash, it's very easy.
So, hear me out...
Lets say there is a ROM I like to flash, and I always set it up a certain way. Maybe I set up the CHT quick links a specific way, wallpapers, tabs order, etc. Now, would it be possible to edit the ROM so that when I flash it, those things are set up like that out of the box? It seems like sounds can be set up to come out of a fresh flash a certain way, so maybe apps too?
Just curious and hoping someone can let me know how hard this would be to do?...
Thanks.
yes you certainly can. i've got all my apps, all cookies settings, favourites, region, time displaythe, tab order the way i like, , , , all i have to do after hard reset is run one cab that sets upemail, and one cab of certain tweaks that need to be run last.(they could be cooked in too, i just haven't gotten round to it yet)
