Myth or reality ? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I keep seeing files to change the boot screen on the Wizard but none seem to work. Is it possible, I used the Pocket PC Dubai method with the three files plus installer on my Magician, but as its WM5 and different config the Wizard won't accept this. Has anyone done it and how do you do it, searching this forum is inconclusive.

myth huh

PocketPC JAM as a USB drive- WinXP?

Hi all,
My first post here...
Is it possible for PCs (Windows XP) to recognise the JAM as a removable USB drive in My Computer without installing the active sync software? I could make good use of my 1GB SD card if this is possible.
Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks.
No
Unfortunately it's only possible @ WM2005 and thats not gonna work with our little machines. (Yes I'm a little pesstimistic  )
yup tried WM2005 and it works! hehehe!
One would consider certain things as 'essential' must haves- maybe a subject view.
So there's absolutely nothing that can be updated in WM2003 to allow to do this??
P.S. What devices are running the WM2005 edition?
I think you should develop some piece of software by yourself
I've searched many hours and there is no one who can make it run.
(doesn't mean it's impossible )
Well, is it really that neccessary? You can use ActiveSync on your home computer and bluetooth or IR for file exchanges on other computers (when they have a bluetooth or IR adapter). Usually, you don't have the cable with you anyway, do you? For the few cases where you still really need it, you can download ActiveSync and install it. No big deal, is it?
It will be much easier because you don't need a USB memory stick anymore. But when you use the same computers (Work, home) then it's no problem to install Activesync
Ok, i get the point - but still, you need the cable which you don't always carry with you. Also, you can use it like a (very slow) USB stick when using IR or BT.
There are 're-coiling' usb cables that fit on your keyring/pocket...
For me it's all about having one unit do many things- the JAM/Magician is very close to doing that.
I am using the Norton Commander clone called "Servant Salamander" http://www.altap.cz/
This file manager has a plugin that allows one to copy and manage files directly on the device -- very conveniently!
frax,
Would I be correct in saying that this application has to be installed on the PC for file transfer to be performed? If this is the case then using ActiveSync is the same thing no?
yep, it is more or less the same thing. I think it is actually using activesync for the interface, so that needs to be installed as well.
There's an application called Softick Card Export that allows you to do just this. www.softick.com
When you install it it puts a system icon in the bottom right of the today screen where you can select either activesync or card modes. In card mode it works just like a memory stick (with the SD card only readable).
Ive been using it for a few weeks now and it works a treat on all xp machines that I've tried - doesn't need activesync (at least not in xp) and is much quicker than copying through activesync.

I'll just confirm that. It works great! And like fishes234 says, it transfers files at USB1.0 speed. ActiveSync is so slow compared to USB1 (lol i'm not going to mention USB2)
I recommend this kit

Windows Mobile 5 and Magician - Why

Since this has always been a "hot topic" on this forum, I have a simple question for all you Magician users.
What are the top 3 reasons you want it / don't want it for Magician.
Here's mine to start you off:
1. I don't want to be left behind
2. New Mobile 5 looks better
3. I want to be able to use charts in Pocket Excel
Let's avoid the WM5 upgrade saga again. We know we won't get an upgrade for Magician. Well, not until May at any rate. (!)
OK - Here's my why not:
1. WM2003SE is stable
2. It already does what I want
3. I can wait till I'm due for an upgrade from my network.
No WM5,
1. 2003 is stable
2. the screen is too small for specials
3. I can wait for a new provider offer (WM5 should be stable by then)
Why not WM5:
1. It's a lot slower, especially at starting programs
2. Not all software is yet WM5 compatible.
3. You have to buy the latest versions of many of your software to have it WM5 compatible. Most updates are not for free.
4. The Magician just doesn't have enough ROM to run WM5 properly
I can't think of any compelling reasons to switch to WM5 that are of a positive significance (btw, I can't count to 3):
-CF 2 works on both.
-Security signing is a pain in the bottom.
-It's slower.
-Ok it has some useful networking functions, but it loses wifi Activesyncing. WTF? Not to mention ActiveSync.
-WM5 interface, perhaps the most potentially useful idea with the softkeys, but inconsistent execution. And I have some ideas about bringing some of the benefits to Wm2003.
-I have the Magician and the Universal. I was just telling my better half about the Universal users' experience with dropping phone calls being able to answer. It's a beautiful device, but once again, what were they on?
Ok, too many others, I'm starting to http://www.ladyofthecake.com/mel/space/images/alien.jpg]sweat and convulse[/url]. Better stop for now.
V
With a device like the Magician where the size is more phone-ish than pda-ish, I'd be inclined to say that most people use it primarily is a mobile phone with the additional functionality of a PDA, MP3 player, etc.
I upgraded to the HTC Prophet just because I want to have the latest. But now that I had it for over 2 to 3 weeks I can say that I would never switch back to WM2003. Single-handed operation with WM5 is very easy, intuitive and practical to say the least.
And when the battery is really low, like less than 30%, I feel safer listenening to the last few MP3s, knowing that I will not lose anything when the battery goes flat.
With regards to performance, I find it suprising how people find loading prorams on Wm5 noticeably slower than WM2003. I was using my old magician yesterday and the performance is just about the same. Th onlt thing I found slower on WM5 is changing the SIP.
Plus, WM5 can do without 3rd party programs like Caller Id, Photo Contacts, etc. cause they are all integrated with the OS. For example, there were times when a picture that I assign to a contact won't show up during a call with the Magician. This never happened to me since I started using WM5. And since contact pictures are synchronised with Outlook I don't need to re-assign them again after a hard-reset.
Finally regarding stability, yes there is software that is not compatible with WM5 yet, but most of the best software is already compatible. I'm using the following software and never had to reset my PPC:
SPB Diary
Resco File Exporer 5
psShutXp
Hitchhiker
MDict
TKCreator
MS Voice Command
and a couple of games
Personally, I think it's quite a stable platform. The only thing that annoys me is that sometimes Wm5 (or the Prophet) loses the storage card after being on standby, and the media stored on it is not always immediately available. You'd have to wait those 3 sec sometimes. But this will hopefully be fixed in the next ROM update. If not, I'm still happy with the overall package
Just my 2cents!
Meh.
Hokay. Regarding WM5... I have never come across an OS that actually requires a file that YOU OWN signed by an EXTERNAL AUTHORITY instead of yourself, and that purposefully ignoring this warning to install said files doesn't necessarily mean it won't be blocked when you try to run it (goodbye backward compat). I thought this technology was strictly for web only.
Stick to WM2003, at least it has the decency to trust its own owner. -.-'

I dont understand - what situation is this coming up?
Well, I have some games on my O2 Xda mini. I tried transferring them to my sister's new Atom.
Message I got from installing was the generic 'this program is not signed by a trusted source'. I ignored it and installed anyway.
But when I tried to run it, guess what? 'Program cannot be run because it is either not signed with a trusted certificate or some files are missing. Please reinstall...'. This was from an installer works perfectly on my Mini.
Did some research, Win Mobile 5.0 will also generate this error when you attempt to execute something with a DOS parameter at the back. It also blocks stuff that do not require installation; Scummvm 8.0 was halted with the same error message. I know the latest Windows OS's have File Execution Prevention but it was never as anal and obnoxious as to go 'I do not want to let it run. So there. Nyah.'

When I was using the I-Mate Jam (Magician) I really liked the "Photo Contacts" program they had, which was actually "Caller ID 1.6" allegedly from IA Styles of late. But it cannot seem to be found anywhere. I have looked from freeware sites to pirate sites and cannot find it. I downloaded and used "Photo Contacts 4.1" for a pretty penny, but it did not allow for animated .gif contact images. I REALLY liked that. Does anyone know where this program can be found? Can any of you remove and distribute it from your phone or from a ROM?

Why don't you download it from the xdadevs FTP server? There are the ExtRoms for Magician with the cab files.
But be careful, you seem to run a WM5 device, it might not run (and force you to hard reset)
Actually WM6
In reality I have upgraded my system to WM6 Pro now and I will let you all know how loading this cab on my Hermes does with WM6. I loved this program when it was running on my Magician (which I gave away to my friend/biz partner) and have tried Photo Contacts Pro 4.yada.yada, and was not happy with THAT. Even got a refund.
Thanks a bunch Dude
Only took a minute
I found it right where you said I would and downloaded it and installed it and soft reset and . . . when I tried to asign a photo it got a headache and gave me a message about being unable to use the program for somereason.
I unistalled it from the system and did another soft reset and while I don't have menu access to assign photos, I can open the edit screen on a contact and assign a photo there.
Maybe I should reload the program again and try accessing it from the Edit screen too? We shall see.
Otherwise, I think I shall attempt installing it on my wife's Blue Angel.

what makes you think we will get an upgrade then ???
sorry n00b magician owner here only had it for a week
any tips?
Greatest 'Photo Contacts' ever
I installed the photo contacts on my wifes Blue Angel - WM2003 - and it was excellent - I only wish someone could make the same program work on my Hermes with WM6. It has the unique ability to use animated .gif images and I LOVE THAT!!!
If anyone could pull this one off I would be overjoyed. I have attached the version with which I am familiar. And if you can't make it work for WM6 - or WM5 - it already works on WM2003 really well. I have loaded it on a couple of Wallabies, a Magician with a new ROM and a Blue Angel - all with great joy in its application.
TIA,

HTC Charmer/MDA Compact II WiFi SDIO

Hello im desperately looking for someone with the expertise to develop a .dll and registry settings that will enable wifi card use on The MDA Compact II (or HTC Charmer).
[go to page 2/3 for solution]
It looks like T-mobile have developed the rom for this phone to stop any wifi SDIO Cards from working! They have missed out certain .dll files that link the driver software to the card reader. This is obviously their attempt to force people to use GPRS rather than using wifi. This is annoying since i was planning to use wifi and T-mobile dont say anything about this in the product details, in fact the device is described as fully SDIO compatible!
Im told the main file missing is called HSDCard.dll (not case sensitive)
Also missing are the registry settings in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Drivers\SDCARD\HostController\xxx\xxx
I really hope that someone can help me and the many other people out there buying wifi cards for this ppc, only to find them secretly barred!
Aparently the cpu and SD card reader on the Compact II are the same as the HTC Prophet so maybe files from a prophet might work.
I know this is alot to ask but im really fed up with this, I tried four different cards before finding out about T-Mobiles secret wifi blocking, and now it seems like it is impossible without help to hack the device from you guys.
I am willing to try and rom's that might work and even prepared to dissasemble the device (and get my soldering iron out) if nessisary.
Any ideas at all will greatfully accepted.
Thanks in advance

The prophet roms work on the charmer so its possible to upload the unbranded Dopod 818 Pro OS portion onto the phone. You'll be left with no tmobile tinkering whatsoever and hopefully a fully function SDIO OS. I dont have wifi sdio card to check this out though. only 1 minus so far ive found is the prophets camera is different so the stuff to run the charmer camera isnt present. I got a complete registry and file dump from the charmer so would have all settings and files needed to solve that hopefully.
Look in uploads and the prophet folder on the xda FTP to download the dopod 818 pro rom. then you can use aWizard to upload the OS portion from that zip onto the phone.
Im trying the process now....verry worried hehe i bet you anything i wont be able to make phone calls tomorrow..
OMFG!! I have a comm manager....and a few errors ..but still!....trying the sdio wifi (obviously!)
OK.... I have a connection manager, and a few other new things. But i didnt hard reset before putting the new os in rom so i have spbpocket ect popping up with errors every 5 seconds lol.
I am sceptical to be honest, im still getting errors on startup even after hard reset and storage empty and the card still doesnt work.
As before it sometimes recognises it with the icon but it wont connect to wifi in the comm manager....i dont know where to go from here really.
Im going to try to replace the rom with the origional from t-mobile, just to check that im not stuck here hehe,
Then tomorrow ill copy the root of each device over to my pc, then sort throught the differences in files and registry keys.
With the two different installations and registries on my pc, side by side, maybe i can find out exactly what t-mobile have removed and add it to the standard t-mobile rom installation, as origionally planned. Thus keeping camera and other errors from occuring......we already have 1 problem hehe
Can you look into getting the camera working?....ie find out what files the t-mobile rom has and reg keys ect, Either that or we should do the above process to mod the origional rom.
QUICK THOUGHT: the dopod 818 pro has built in wifi...this may give us further problems
7 am here now and verry tired hehe, quick nap for funk but ill be keep trying this out and post any sucess or near sucess hehe
I'd love to email t-mobile a working rom update for the MDA Compact II....hehehe.....would say alot
For anyone else wishing to try this process, the Offiial t-mobile rom update .exe file will restore the MDA Compact II to its origional state after you play with the os rom, mine has restored perfectly. Even though i used CID unlock in the process.
Post your results

i used this program off buzzdev to get a dump or all the windows rom files and exported out the registry aswell. did a hard reset with the charmer rom minus customization, did a dump then installed the prophet rom, hard reset, stopped customization and did a dump.
So now using Beyond Compare 2, can see exactly what files are a different size or what files each rom has the other one doesnt. The camera does indeed use a different library and registry setting. so far i have only just changed that over, starting the camera, it goes to switch to landscape but then quits out and changes back to portrait, so a bit more than before. just a reg problem with that now i think since ive copied all the relevant files over needed.
My prophet rom is flawless, i get no errors what so ever. i did hard reset mine before with the charmer rom and then again after installing the prophet one so it was completely fresh and it works fine, (besides camera)
I'll see about uploading the files dump to the ftp so you can just download them to look for yourself. using the file dumper takes over a hour to do for one device!
heres one
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Charmer/Charmer OSDump.rar
contains all files in the windows directory from the charmer t-mob rom
and the other
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/HTC_Prophet/Prophet OSDump.rar
using beyond compare, use the wizard to select the 2 extracted folders and uncheck the date/time check, you just wanna know by size to tell which files are different and it'll automatically highlight which are missing too.
Here are the files that are present in the Dopod 818 pro and not on the Charmer....interesting reading hehe

So, pheasibly the missing drivers are within one of these .dll files ect (microsof has been known to combine all sorts of drivers from very diffferent devies into single files )
On a less encouraging note when i examined the reistry there are differences in almost every line. So getting the reg keys together is going to be a mommoth job and will probably be beyond my knowledge.
fUNKUS
only HKCR of the registry is in a different order, for some reason exporting on the prophet put that section in alphabetical order but was completely different (random?) on the charmer. A lot of the later sections, HKCU and HKLM are fine and more obvious to whats missing.
funkus, download this, re exported the registrys on both OS with another regedit. much much easier now!! all the keys are listed in perfect order with each other so its totally obvious whats different.
have updated the original files on the ftp aswell to include these new ordered regs for anyone else who wants to join in with 'the fun'

searching for files with different sizes should highlight any of these.
aaaah nice youre being so helpful mate ill give this a go now and see what i can see.
Can i edit the registry here and then copy it to my ppc? that would be easier hehe EDIT: exported edited on pc and imported using Resco Registry and Notepad...very nice
Plus im not sure but i think we'll need the hardware id of the card to replace this:

So far the card seems no more responsive. The 'i' icon comes up but only once every reset as before (ie if you unplug it you need to reset to get the icon back)
But i do now have a connection manager next to my battery bar, it runs in the tray if you execute WIFITray.exe but the wifi option in it crashes the device. The other options seem to work (Blootooth on and off, vibrate mode on off, and Active sync) wifi settings runs but wont recognise card...if we can get it working it looks like a useful program to have
Maybe i have missed something, perhaps the manufacturor code in the sdio keys needs changing what do you think? Maybe some files refer to the built in wifi in the prophet rather than any clientdrivers? Perhaps i have missed an important file, is there anything in the jpeg that you think i might need?
any ideas?
I wish some one else was trying this process, im trying to be thoughrough (resetting alot ect) but im likely to make a mistake with the reg keys or something and miss a possible fix.

am still looking into the camera settings. puzzling! i can tell by the charmer reg in HKLM\Drivers\Active, that the cameradriver.dll and DirectXs Directshow capture is loaded up but in the prophet, despite having the exact same cameradriver.dll it isnt loading into memory. if i can get that to start up i reckon that solves the problem, the cameradriver.dll is also linked to directshow capture somehow. have already changed the camera program and swaped s5k3bafx.dll with ov9650.dll in the registry.
try this out, it includes a new OMAP850_SDHC.dll and sdbus.dll as recently posted on modocos prophet forum
i added the dopod818 pro ext_rom to my device and let customization run on a hard reset, it added a new pair of these dlls and now another new pair have surfaced.
i reckon dopod are updating these pair because maybe the older versions have issues with some cards or bugs that theyve now solved.
I have tried the cab file but it doesn't seem to have helped. Do you think i have missed important files or reg settings?
The camera settings seem strange, how can they use the same files and reg keys if they use different hardware? Bizarro!

Ps: thanks again for your help!
PPS: Recieved another email from T-Mobile re. the update. They will confirm that the people developing the rom update are 'aware' of the issue but refuse to confirm that they will attempt fo fix it. Basically i think theay are trying but untill they have finished testing the rom they will not confirm its contents. That way no-one can complain if they cant fix it. Could be good news or bad, the udate is due this month. But since they are only recenly aware of the problem im worried it wont be in the update. I really dont think we can rely on t-mobile to fix this problem.
Heres the link just in case: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=phones_im_wnw_how
well i have rifled through all the files and registries of both devices and i cant see anything major that could of been overlooked. I have so far created a charmer rom that incorperates alot of missing registries and dll, exes etc from the prophet rom so ended up with a debranded hybrid of the 2 with added extras like the soft key applet and reg tweaks for speed, plus those latest omap850_sdhc and sdbus.
The camera issue is very strange, i dont see why the prophet rom refuses to load it like the charmer does on startup. I may do the opposite and cook the prophet rom with parts of the charmer so that the new settings are defaulted into the rom rather than fiddle with the registry and dlls after uploading it. see if that makes a difference.
Thats a good idea perhaps you could load the rom to the ftp site so i can test it too.
Also: I have recieved an email (god knows how they got it!) about the MDA Comapct II suggesting that perhaps the Charmer has wifi (as the propedt version does) built in but with a disabling function (hw/sw) so.....I took it to peices
Ill write full details and do diagrams when i have little more time, it seems possible to dissasemble the device fully. I couldnt see any obvious missing parts or dodgy soldering but boy do they want to keep you out of there, even after taking the entire device to peices most of the main chip board is encased in soldered metal enclosures!
Here are details from all visible chip though (digram on its way)
[This is a list of codes read from any visible chip]
1.
SDIO Reader:
Panasonic SDIO OS1112P
XA29200933
4053BS4809935
0320-02M B01 A0B
2. BHS TIW 5975 (?)
3. 5559 378 (rectangular metal with small hole)
4. BBJ S9K (?)
Dunno if any of that is important, if there is a wifi chip it could well be locked within the meatal casing with an external ariel, but the full details of the SDIO reader might help reveal something. Ill take photos of the interior if needed i just forgot that my mobile camera is my only one!

PS: My device still works after dissasembly but i did break off the knob of plastic that the sliding volume controll moves so if youre gunna try it, watch out for that!
posted my debranded rom up
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=255657#255657
so to conclude i guess, we've looked at the differences in the registry and rom and going on the basis that TMobile somehow messed up their rom and stopped wifi cards from working. but there is very little difference between them and combining the differences doesnt solve it.
so we're only left with, either WM5 doesnt natively support wifi sdio cards or there is a hardware reason in the mdac2 why it wont work with wifi sdio. t-mobile assures us they are looking into it.

Cingular 8525 - various connection problems, app specific

Ok, I've recently purchased a 8525 from Cingular Wireless (USA), because I liked the phone and it's a good management tool. My only complaint is I play a mud game (ooh... yeah... mudgame ) here at http://www.dsl-mud.org , now I work for a large banking institution and more often than not, I find myself with too much time on my hands. I've spent two weeks searching for possible fixes to this, but I cannot seem to connect to the telnet to play it. If I use Terminal Client Services, I can connect to the server, which I am not the owner of DSL and have no access to it. If I try to put in the port # (mud.dsl-mud.org:4000 or www.dsl-mud.org:4000) it won't recognize the port because of the : I've tried upgrading the .NET Framework... to no avail as well.
Also, problem #2 is my Pocket MSN, which works great, I really do love the app, but after about a minute, I can send messages but not recieve any.... any ideas (Before and after .NET Framework update)
Edited to add this:
Also, using bluetooth connection, I cannot seem to connect to my brother's RAZR V3 phone to send files etc. The two will recognize eachother but it only shows "Dialup Networking" as the services available
The phone is the Cingular 8525 (hermes), no 3rd party app's except for the multiple telnet clients I've tried... is it possibly a registry edit I need to do?
Thanks in advance (I asked here because after searching through multiple forums, you guys seem to be the most knowedgeable/helpfull)
Hallo and welcome to the forum DSLMulassassin.
Unfortunately I am not competent to answer your question(s).
I just wanted to say that often more answers are gained when the thread title gives fairly specific info on the problem. So where people might not look at a thread called "a little confused here" they might open a thread called "problems connecting to telnet". This also helps greatly when people search based on thread titles. So if you get good answers, folks doing future searches on "telnet" will benefit as well.
Hope you get some replies
Mike
Yeah, you're correct Mike, just it's late and I couldn't think of a better topic, but you are 100% right.
Fixed bluetooth problem
For Terminal Services, frankly, upgrade to Crossbow, or search around for the registry hack that lets you specify a custom port. Can't remember it off hand, it might be in the wiki. Fuzzy search for it, or google the site.

While I agree that upgrading to Crossbow would probably be better, I do not feel like flashing my ROM, I say that because I am too new to this, and do not want to risk Bricking my device... maybe when I've read over everything for a few more weeks and feel comfortable that I know what I'm doing. Do you think it might be a registry setting blocking ports?

Noob question from a long(ish)-time member

I've been out of BA scene for ages, since I got my Hermes. After that I put my own version of 2003SE back on with a nice EXTROM installation to amend it (See attachments).
Up to then I played around with numerous WM5 BA roms, most notably from xplode and helmi_c, but for the last 2 years or so I've been messing about with the Hermes and Universal and using the BA just for gaming.
Having just picked up a bricked phone for a fair price to all parties on ebay and unbricked it I fancy getting WM6 on the go.
I've done the usual reading through all the threads and gone back through wiki - the BA section's changed a fair bit in last couple of years.
In short, it's that question that tends to get a lot of flack. I'm Mister Minimal when it comes to roms - anyone who's done a lot of kitchen cooking able to recommend a good setup/set of oems/drivers without my sopending the same 6 months experimenting that I always do with a new phone?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Anyone who does a clean HR of BA 2003SE by the way might want to try the attached before putting their own, realsetup on. It's what my start menu looks like after the first couple of cabs go on but before my actual software. The icons I've nicked from everywhere from pc windows to forums and I've no idea who designed what - none of the icons are my design.
All of the other progs which install from my EXTOM or Storage (internal, not SD Card) follow the same convention in the start menu, so java, other media players, etc go into relevant folders. Also the comms icons like wireless modem, wireless manager (which come from another cab but has other cack in it so not attached).
It's quite a nice setup, the start menu stuff attached just gives an indicator as to which way I've gone with 2003. I particularly like the Divison of Office and Outlook in the main start menu.
I think the del icons cab has to be run by autoron if memory serves, as it uses registry to delete icons.
