Does anyhave have/use Visual Studio 2005 RC or Beta 3? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Guys, I need to test some stuff on the emulator in either Visual Studio 2005 release candidate or Beta 3. The WM5 emulator doesn't work so well on Beta 2 which I use. My Magician is only WM2003SE
If you're using either of these versions, please PM me.
V

Is that out to MSDN already?

Beta 3 is out on MSDN. RFM next week. Release on Nov 7.
I was at a Microsoft TechTalk yesterday, hinting that I'd love a copy of the RC, but they just gave out Beta 2, again. I've got about 3 copies now...
If you've got MSDN, any chance of downloading it's 3gb of fat-ass? I don't have msdn.
V

In fact the final versions of both Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 were posted to MSDN last night.

Good stuff Tom, I'll see what I can find. Drop me a line if you get any new info on itl
It was good to see you at the talk yesterday! Speak to Buzz, http://buzzdev.net, or look around the board for some patches for the instability problems on your blue angel. I think people have got it working pretty stable, but I've not really read into to it.

Agile Messenger for WM 5.0

We will be releasing a new version of Agile Messenger for WM5.0 both PPC and Smartphone versions, that is a complete re-write from the ground up. The BETA will be available in the next week or so, and will be posted publicly on this forum for all of the members to download.
Your feedback is appreciated, and we are quite confident that you will be happy with the new Agile Messnger for WM5.0.
Thanks for your continued support.

No ... a good point and a definative reason to use it instead of Messenger.
Great! Thanks
Cool, I actually just tried to put agile on my wizard yesterday. Everything was lookin good. I signed on AIM and could recieve message, but the ones I sent never made it through. It would also disconnect when the device was in standby for a minute or so, but that was probably the fault of the rom. Use of softkeys would make this program really nice.
great news...
i found that agile did work on my jasjar but the today screen plug in always gave an error..
is there any voip features??? or google talk???
thanks
im so hapey im tring not to cray :,-) i love Agil, sethmw can u add support for cam on Qtek 9000 and Qtek 9100 can u?

Hi,
You were mentioning that Agile is free, but according to the agile mobile website, you have to pay for Agile messenger. So what's up with that? :?:

Will be the new version QVGA ready?

Not to be a stickler, but you mentioned the same "Agile rewrite" story in a few weeks and offered me to be part of a beta in a private message... which I still have, dated October 24, 2005, and you haven't responded to any of my emails or PMs since then.
While I'm glad there's finally some apparent progress, I would have hoped to be part of that development to make sure the next version that comes out isn't going to be riddled with bugs that we'd have to wait weeks at a time for updates...
IM+ seemed to have stopped at 4.04 back when I purchased it in December and I, too, have been emailing them with a bunch of bug fixes and feature requests, also without response.
Let's hope someone pulls through with a decent IM for the Pocket PC platform, finally.

Here, here! This is the one area where windows mobile just doesn't have a really good piece of software at any price.
It's a bummer that it sounds like the promise of a revamped version of Agile hitting open beta soon might be an empty one...
Agile Beta
The reason for the delay in the Beta is the fact that it was an entire re-write. Agile Messenger has been in development for over 3 years now. To expect us to re-write the client for WM 5.0 in 3 weeks is a DREAM.
The new client has been in development since late September and will be available for public Beta in the next couple of weeks. Sending PM's asking for it today is a waste of time, because we do not want to release the Beta until we are internaly satisfied with it as a release candidate. The purpose of the Beta is to work out bugs, not to release a version that is not ready to be used publicaly.
Everyone on this forum will recieve the Beta at the same time, which as I said will be available here in the next few weeks.
Agile Messenger for Symbian phones currently has a license fee in certain markets as we develop our billing network.
Agile Messenger for Windows Mobile will be free for the time being and will eventualy be a licensed product as well.
As I said we have a team of developers that have been working on Agile Messenger for over 3 years now, and we currently support 4 operating systems and over 40 unique devices. I like to think that we provide a product that is better then any of the other solutions out there, and we would like to continue to do that. Therefore at some point it is neccesary to charge a license fee, as unfortunately we can not support a staff of developers over an infinate period of time as a charity.
We appreciate your continued support, and intend to continue to provide a solution that is second to none.
For those of you that expect special treatment and early Beta's it is simply not possible as we intend to provide it to the entire community as soon as our internal devlopment team and quality controll is satisfied that it is ready for public release.
Thanks again, and we look forward to your feedback.

QVGA
In response to the question regarding QVGA, we hope to be releasing a version for WM 5.0 Smartphone devices at the same time as the version for the WM 5.0 PPC based devices.
The new version should support:
Push To Talk
Image Transfer
Emoticons
Group Management
Typing Notification
Support for AOL, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and Google Talk
Amongst a number of other new features, and an entirely new interface.
There have ben a number of internal builds over the past few months, and we expect to be releasing a Beta very shortly.

Does the fact that you are posting on Universal’s forum mean that there will be a version of Agile messenger specialized for the Universal?
For instance on Nokias you have the option Send picture from new, meaning that the software is aware of the camera on the mobile. The other thing that I was always missing on my Nokia, I believe that on PPCs it is even more needed, is the FILE TRANSFER. Will you make this possible?
Thanx
Can anyone post the new version here as soon it's released. Thanks

Opera Mobile 9.5 announced - Flash... yes and no

I figured this would be up on the board by now...
Opera has announced Opera Mobile 9.5. It will support Flash, if the OEM chooses to include Flash Lite 3.0.
I figure someone on here will incorporate it in about 9.5 hours.
Official specs:
http://www.opera.com/b2b/file/Opera_Mobile_Product_Sheet.pdf
There is no Flash lite 3 on Windows Mobile for anyone to implement. There isn't even a Developers' edition.
i guess im still holding out for skyfire....with the way it renders pages, isnt it supposed to do full flash, java and everything as we see it on our desktops?
Seems pretty fast to me:

Makes PIE look like complete rubbish, which it is.

Like I emphasized in my post, it will be there if the OEM chooses, and others here beat me to saying the Nokia already has it.
No dev edition? Get it here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashlite3/
I downloaded it 2 months ago. Edit: I expect it to be WinMo ready soon if Opera says it will be a feature in OM 9.5.... for WinMo.

Its only for Symbian OS v3 and Windows XP. It can be ported to run on linux.
See FAQ here
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashlite/faq/ Look at the 6th and 7th questions.
Therefore, no FL3 for winmo platform, and this has been clarified by an Adobe representative.
The faq just says that Symbian and XP are the reference platforms. Nothing says it won't be ported to WinMo, just that it won't be a reference platform (certified by Adobe so comparison tests can be run against other platforms). The pdf I linked to above clearly says that OM 9.5 will be available on WinMo (upper right corner of 2nd page), and that it will support FL 3.0 (lower left of 2nd page).
Do you have a reference to the clarification from Adobe?

I had posted a link for Adobe's clarification before, but that link is broken now.
Opera 9.5 is capable of having FL3, but only if the OEM integrates them. HTC device running winmo does not have FL3 to do so AFAIK,
Which brings us back to my first post - its possible, HTC could do it with future devices (or someone else will come out with FL 3 on WinMo) and then someone on this board will port it for us.
My bet is the next Athena will be WinMo 6.1 w/Opera 9.x and FL 3.
Skyfire does look appealing and will be released soon. It uses a proxy server (like opera mini) to render not only the page itself but also the java/flash content. This makes me worry about whether the possible popularity of the application - which is being released on both Winmo AND Symbian - might cause slowness and unreliablity owing to the enormous bandwidth required. I think i'd sooner have an embedded flash plugin and a normal browser (like Opera Mini), but i'll give them both a whirl!

I'd have some concern if it uses proxy server. I won't want to do internet banking or online shopping with it. I'd rather see all rendering to be done on the device itself. Also, I'm not sure if a proxy server set up would end up attracting subscription fee in the long run. Surely someone has to pay for the server side expenditure.

I can't wait to try!
Hi everyone!
I just got off the phone with nice gentleman named Tom Ford from Opera. He is closely involved in the 9.5 project. He want us to know that a numbers of issues such as pricing
and upgrading from the current version have yet to be decided. I expressed our excitement over the opportunity to be involved in the beta testing which he seemed to find really encouraging. He's going to keep us closely informed in the process leadinq up to the beta release. I gave him my email address and I'll share with everyone any information he sends me. This is all I have right now. He may decide to post the info himself but if not, when he emails me I would gladly pass on any questions you might have
-David
Welcome to the forums David - nice first post, keep us informed of aany further news, I'd certainly be interested if they need beta testers!
If Opera 9.5 on the desktop (see demo here http://cybernetnews.com/2007/09/03/cybernotes-exclusive-opera-95-features-video/ and the software here http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?ver=9.50b) is an indication of what we could expect from the PPC version, then I'd be estatic! The speed is incredible. I've just installed desktop 9.5 on my PC and I cannot believe how fast it could be as compared to internet explorer on my Vista notebook, or the earlier version of desktop opera.
I also like the new features such as speed dial and ability to recover closed opera windows from the trashcan. This is a hugh improvement over the earlier version of desktop opera.
So, I'm looking forward to that hugh leap improvement on the window mobile too.
Ill have to give the desktop version a try.

New SDK with Microsoft Visual Studio support

We’ve had a great reception to the first version of the Xperia SDK, in the first couple of days it was downloaded literally thousands of times and the initial feedback we’ve had has been really positive. In this update, we’ve added support for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 development environment and the Microsoft Vista OS as well as added key mapping support to the device emulator and the testing and debugging is easier.
On top of that, we are releasing the SDK as Beta and taking a more open and agile approach so we can dramatically increase the rate of innovation and deliver more of the features requested by the developer community sooner.

yet nobody could find the version 5?
I ran it can't say i was overly impressed, it's nice and it is smooth on the rendering front however if you use bluetooth audio like i do you have to set up media player every time to get it to work.
It just shows an umpty library you have to manually add items to play each time

Windows Mobile Development on MS Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone?

Hi I'm looking for a solution for developing windows mobile applications without paying for a professional version of visual studio (I am a hobbyist and don't have the spare cash for such an outlay). I'm sure I'm not the only one in the same situation here.
Options:
1. Visual Studio 2008/2010 Professional 90 Day Trail
Temporary solution, which I'm using now.
2.Windows Mobile Development Without Visual Studio
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/mobile/WiMoSansVS.aspx
Although I've tried this method and it works, I've realised I am not familiar enough to do the programming I need without the support and tools which Visual Studio provides.
3. Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone
http://winspark.net/2010/03/15/download-visual-studio-2010-express-for-windows-phone/
I've yet to try this, the documentation does not mention windows mobile (only windows phone), logic would suggest that it would include support for windows mobile (as we all know, logic may not apply). Even the comparison charts I've looked at don't mention it (I hope due to the re-brand of windows phone).
Can anyone confirm if this would provide a suitable free solution for windows mobile development?
Hopefully this can be answered before my free trail I'm using in option 1 expires so it can give me time to attempt to get a full Pro Version instead. Since it took me a week on and off, of uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio, SDKs, .net frameworks etc etc to get VS2008Pro trial to work correctly, I don't want to try it until I've run out of my period or finished what I'm working on.
4. Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2
Not sure how this would compare with later versions, and also if wm6.5 would be supported. Hopefully it's a good fall-back option if it's still available.
vijay555 said:
PC Plus Magazine did a big review of the express versions and said that they "expressly" leave out Mobile development.
Good to practice on, but not for WM5/WM2003 development so far I think. If you're desperate, you can get a free copy of Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 from many places, and that will let you do pretty much everything, but the emulator is not perfect. This can be downloaded from elsewhere though. So, pretty much full development for free!

I'm sure it will help a lot of people starting out if this can be confirmed to be a free development solution for wm6.x.
I can even start with some tutorials to get people started off.

Little options
When you like to use a MS Visual Studio environment, I think you have little options. According to this article on the msdn forum, option 3 is... wel not an option since only version 7 is supported...
To my knowledge you can not use the 6.5 (6.1/6.5) SDK on the express versions (2005/2008) of Visual Studio. Maybe you're in luck and some 'hack' is around to be able to install the SDK on a express version, but I never 'googled' for it. By default you cannot install the sdk on a 2008 express version.
Your option 2 (Windows Mobile Development Without Visual Studio) looks like the only available free option...

It's kinda what I feared:
Option3 - MS want to move people to Windows Phone 7 and off windows mobile, so sort of understand this (although way to annoy a lot of people in the process).
Yep WM is not supported in the other Express versions, but thought 2010 would be backwards compatible. I'm not sure what you do if you want to develop for both platforms...
Puts me off learning to develop for it really, might consider a different platform next time I get a phone.
Hack an Express version Option - Yeah I don't think that's in the T&Cs. Getting a genuine Pro Trial version was difficult enough to get running correctly.
Option 2: Since it's a case of installing tools which they've freely released without modifying them it's probably ok.
Edit - MS Rip:
Visual Studio 2008 Professional £709.99 (and they charge postage...). I can't begin to understand why they want to make it so difficult just to write apps when they give everything else away with Express, plus now the fact they give away Windows Phone 7 development via VS2010.
Current result is:
Best Option is #1 - after 90 days there is of course a problem...
Option #2 - Perhaps possible once you have learned enough to do without the form designer and emulator or you have most of your application completed already.
Option #3 - Dead End for windows mobile.
Option #4 - Not found a version which I can trust to use. Consider the size and amount of stuff being installed, plenty of room to sneek some nasties in if obtained from a bad source.
Personally, I think if you are interested in developing for the 1st time, then go for option #1, you may find you've done all you want to in 90 days and if not you have option 2 to finish off what you were working on.
I would also consider backing up your system before you do development work to ensure you have a "clean" system to go back to (ensure you don't get your computer clogged up with VS files that linger etc - VS also can require a lot of installing/uninstalling of SDKs etc to get running correctly so a good back up is very important).
Just got done installing Visual Studio 2010 and was looking for the SDK's. Unfortunately the search for information has only lead to one thing.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/sa69he4t.aspx
No support for WM6.5 in VS2010. Too bad. Guess going back to Visual Studio 2008. MS seems to bet on WP7 for Visual Studio in the future. I did find some rumors that WM 6.5 Comaptible SDK's should follow a couple month after release of VS2010 but so far nothing more then rumors.

Yeah it's very annoying. Fortunately the 90 days trial works out quite a long time if you are working on something for the whole time.
Fingers crossed they will keep VS2010 free for WM6.5 too if they do release them. It would make sense to allow people to develop for both at the same time IF as they promised it is as easy to port to WP7. On plus side, the graphics side of WM6.5 SDK is rather poor which WP7 hopefully won't suffer from so much (just hope it's not too restrictive + we can use it if any good on WM6.5 phones...).

VS2010 has retailed. There will most likely not be any WM6.5 updates for it.
You can pick up a cheap copy of VS2008 Pro on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Microsoft-Visua...ultDomain_0&hash=item5639aedd8d#ht_2892wt_911
Even for a hobbyist, $115 is pretty damn cheap. You could probably even pick up second hand VS2005/2008 for even cheaper than that.
Remember that only the professional versions of 2005/2008 will allow for Windows Mobile development. Sure, it sucks, but WinMo is a business-orientated OS - it was never meant to allow for your average joe programmer to whip up a quick Pacman clone...

I'm guessing it was more of a move to reduce support required for it since WinMob wasn't much of a money spinner. I would expect the SDK will come in time, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's pro for 2010 only (I get the general impression MS are keen to put windows mobile far behind them).
The 90 day trial seems to be fine for now, amazing how much you can do in that time anyway.
You can get the community tech preview (CTP) here:

Unfortunately not, but for the hobby stuff it's possible to just create a VM or something to handle it instead. Redoing the VM every 3 months isn't much of a problem for casual use. I was curious if there was any proper way to do it that was all.
The more I use VS the less I need things like the designer, since as you get more advanced the designer is useless.
