Hello happy owners of Wizard!
It looks like Wizard is a really nice device but the only unclear question for me is - DOES IT WORKS PRETTY WELL WITH SKYPE?!
I got skype pre installed on my uk version when I received it. it work abit slow but not that usable over gprs. have got to try it yet over wifi and then again with the newer beta version. will keep you posted
NOT VERY GOOD
I HAVE TRIED MY WIZARD WITH WIFI AND IT IS STILL NOT TO GOOD, AS COMPARED TO OTHER FASTER DEVICES,
(IF YOU LOOK AT THE SPECS FOR THE SKYPE POCKET PC, THEY DO RECOMEND 400MHZ SPEED AS COMPARED TO THE 195MHZ OF THE WIZARD )
Have installed skype ver 1.2 beta.
have tested it on wifi.
if your not running any other apps then you can have an ok conversation depending on the other persons connection and speed.
skype works just about usable from k-jam to normal computer, but after testing from k-jam to a friends xda2s it was not clear at all with plenty of interferance.
So it all depends on the setup, conection and who you are talking to. i Have put a message in the skype forum to advise of a more lower spec version of skype to run on devices like the k-jam.
I hope they do release a better version.
Skype from Extended_ROM of K-JAM wanted!
Would you please post/send me Skype, which may be optimized for K-JAM? Skype is not distributed in the Middle East... :-(
Many thanks,
J.
This is a link to the Skype forum were you can download the skype 1.2 beta version.

Hope this help
Guys,
i'm really curious about SKYPE on the WIZARD too...
...i've read somewhere you can run SKYPE just fine provided you switch ECHO CANCELLATION off. It's an option under preferences or settings ( sorry, don't have a device with installed soft yet ).
Please let us know if you get good performance this way.
=)

OK, we can all download Skype from the official site. However, it appears to come bundled with the K-Jam with under the name
Default_SkypeForPocketPCnonxScale.CAB
Is there a difference between the two, and will the nonXScale version work somewhat better on the Wizard?
Does any one have this cab file so i can test it on my o2 xda miniS?

I think you can find it on the ftp of this site
nothing works for me
i dont no whats gone wrong for me...with 50+ hard resets...100+ times downloads and redownloads of all possible versions...with writting in all forums including skype....it just doesnt even open for me once....
funny but its true...i am in tears with this device as my brother in australia and me in india spend loads of money everyday....anyone who can help me have a version working on my device will get 100dollars gift...through paypal with loads of love...
one more funny thing worth to notice...everytime i write in skype about this issue a few people (same ones) just write after me how well it works for them and a few other things that dont happen for them...this just kills my querry and i have given up now...i just hate windows mobile 5 only for this.
Try this one. It's from the K-JAM extended rom.
EDIT:
File Upload does not work for me...
But you can download it here
http://rapidshare.de/files/8474397/Skype_KJAM.cab.html
I have installed the one from K-jam on my qtek 9100, and it works great over wifi.
I think it is probably the same as the the 1.2 beta on skype site...
Skype Non Xscale on XDA mini?
Hi, I got that copy of the non xscale kjam version of skype and tried to install it on my o2 xda mini and i get the message:
"Your device is not supported by the Skype sound engine. Calling functionality will be disabled"
Any suggestions?
Thanks
I tried all 3 versions (K-Jam, Offical, Offical Low CPU) and all give me equally bad results even with perfect WiFi reception. I tried calling the "echo123" test service and the voice lags and drops from time to time.
One time it worked perfectly but in the same config it didn't work on the next try.
@deepak:
If you need voip so badly mabe you should just consider another VoIP software like SJPhone which works realy well on the wizard. But of course it won't help you with skype contacts.

If I loaded SJPhone on a Wizard, what would be a good VOIP provider to use? I've only used Skype up to this point and I'm not familiar with the providers that support WM5/PDAs.
I tried the latest Skype beta and the Skype Beta Low CPU and the K-JAm non XScale version, but the Low_CPU version had a very bad sound quality. While the normal version works very well. So, althought the Wizard only has 200MHz (dual core) and the low_cpu version is for 316Mhz pda's, the wizard should not be seen as a low cpu pda.
So I recommend the official Skype Beta standard edition that is available on the site of Skype.
(Still trying to get SJPhone working with VoipBuster, I can connect, but I can't see anybody online to call, although they are online on the VoIPBuster desktop version)

@Matterhorn:
I tried the german provider SipGate.de . But I think all SIP compatible providers should work.
Hi,
After I install the kjam version of skype on my xda i recieve a message saying this model isnt supported and it will disable the skype sound engine.
I assume its something to do with a vendor id or some similar check. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks

Skype beta nightmares
Deinstall it and have a happier life.
There are versions that work on the Wizard. Some people can run the normal version others have to run the low cpu version. I tried both and whilst they worked, I was unhappy about it running itself in background all the time and deinstalled it. Then I got loads of errors because it was still there under the covers.
I finally managed to hack it all out, but it has put me off Skype on the PDA. At least until it gets past the beta stage.
I'm a big fan of VoIP and Skype are the biggest. Not sure I like them though.
Just my experience.
...from HERE
It was released yesterday.
I've downloaded the normal version (not the 312MHz version) but I haven't had a chance to install it it yet. To be honest the previous version was working fine so I'm not sure how much better this one can be :?
Anyone had a play with it yet?
Cheers!
Gadget.
my skype 2 not works.
i'm in wifi lan,
but skype 2 can't find the wifi connect on internet.
who can help me?
With Skype's recent announcement that new features in its desktop version of the client will only work with Intel processors, I think it's obvious that they are unlikely to give a damn about making the client usable on OMAP processors. Making a client compatible with only one brand of a processor is deliberately-programmed exclusivity, and totally unnecessary. I shan't be touching Skype unless they change their Intel-only policy.
Skype 2
Also, I won't be trying it until some nice people here confirm that it doesn't cause incessant rebooting like earlier betas allegedly have.
I've installed the latest 'normal' Skype (not the 312mhz). I normally overclock my Wizard when using Skype.....Works much better!!

For any of you who've been using a Nokia Symbian phone in recent months, you'll be happy to hear that fring has just released a WM5/WM6 fring client on a "preview" basis (beta of the beta - but not quite alpha testing).
fring was the one thing that was tempting me back to my Nokia E61 after finally "fixing" my TyTN. Basically, it's a combined VOIP/IM client that supports Skype, Google Talk, MSN and SIP as well as it's own community.
So those of you still stuck on WM5 or SJPhone forget about it. For those with any issues whatsoever with the WM6 VOIP client, forget about it. From my experience, fring SIP over 3G was even better than the built-in Nokia SIP client on the E61 over wifi in terms of call quality and availability (and that says a lot).
Does it have bugs, yes. Does it need improving, yes. But it's still the best thing out there. And even if you only use Skype Mobile, the RAM usage of fring is less than half (although call quality for Skype seems to be noticably lower than over SIP).
Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up. Don't kill me if you hate it (and no, I'm in no way employed by them). To find it, just do a google search for fring or go to www.fring.com. Their Windows Mobile forum can be found here:
http://www.fring.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11
I have problem to in stall it on my Hermes.... Can`t install it...
Fring - Hermes not supported
After registration i recieved the following message:
Your handset is not supported ... yet.
I'am eager to try fring, but we have to wait until the Hermes is supported.
somebody out there, running fring on a hermes?
Edit: Now i recieved my downloadlink, hmmm i will try later tonight back home and report back....
Tried this morning b4 seeing this post. It works quite well...
it works
I finally installed fring, and it works..... (just tried skype)
tried over GPRS&G3, and the phone wakes up from standby flawlessly
i also like those facts (bandwith usage):
fring for symbian phones consumes
~ 8MB for 60 min of mobile-VoIP call;
0.05 KB per Instant message
fring overhead ~ 10KB per hour connectivity
i hope those figures are equivalent to those on a WM5/WM6 device....
i kept getting a no internet connection error...
Any way to take the: "On mobile by www.fring.com" ??
Thanks for the heads up from Quist! I had just installed the new version of Skype only to have it crash everytime I make a call, just about to go back to the old version but will give Fring a go as just the fact that is not as memory hog like Skype appeals to me.
Warning to those on limited data plans
Be aware that fring automatically starts and attempts to log in every time the device is reset. Since I do a backup every morning at 2:00 AM using Spb Backup, which does a soft reset afterwards, my GPRS data usage skyrocketed. Not to mention that I was fast asleep at 2:00 AM, not ready to talk to any contacts at that time. Bad, bad fring! Bye, bye fring... I may try you again when you behave better!
I know that there is an easy way to stop it from doing this, but it is just the principle behind it. I hate programs that try to second guess my wishes and do things on my behalf without asking me whether that is OK or not. Besides, it should have the option of not using GPRS/3G for those of us on limited data plans (in my case, $30 per month for 7 MB of data download!)

DOH!!! How did I miss that one?! And guess what? There is also an option "Disable autostart". OK, now I feel like a fool. Maybe I should edit my original post to say "Make sure that you disable autostart if you don't want fring to log in at 2:00 AM after a soft reset, and make sure to disable GPRS/3G if on a limited data plan."
My apologies to the fring developers.
John
this software is pretty bad ass,, i finally got it to work a few days ago.... i even started a call with a friend on google and it worked great!!!
thumbs up!
Did your Google Talk call go through your speakerphone speaker? Is there a way to change that?

You have two (maybe three) options: The first is to use the built-in rear speaker (the default). The second option is to connect the wired headset that came with your device. The third option (I haven't tested this or know anyone that has got it to work, but according to Teksoft's web site it should work on the Hermes) is to use Bluemusic to redirect the rear speaker output to a Bluetooth headset.
There is no way to use the built-in front (ear) speaker as this is reserved for the phone hardware.

hi all,
i've been trying to use Skype 2.2 for Windows Mobile Professional (Pocket PC) on my at&t 8525 windows mobile 6.
everything installs fine and i can connect to calls but the sound keeps on breaking in to pieces. plus the other person can't hear me.
i thought it was my slow 3g connection but it wasn't because i tethered the phone to the comp and used skype. that worked fine.
so i think it's a software issue? or the version that i'm using is wrong?
does anyone else have this problem? know how to fix? or which version of skype are you guys using with windows mobile 6?
oh i just found the solution, for those that have the same issue. you need to get an earlier version of skype: Pocket Skype 2.2.0.18 Beta!
get it here: http://smarthacks.com/2007/06/26/wo...-trinity-p3600/
I have the same problem on my Dopod 838 pro. Can't find a good solution because I'm using Windows Mobile 6.1. Forced to use the newest version with crippled sound engine. Anyway, the link appears to be erroneous to me. Error 404 in that blog.
Same problem here. Sound breaks up. Using Schap's 4.31.

The older version of Skype is hopefully still on this link:

Just wanted to say in advance, Thanks Mike.
Just checked my Skype account, so I can talk to an old friend in Poland, and hoping this will ease this...
Do you know if it'll work through the WIFI on the phone? (Hermes). Or do i have to preconnect it to something first?
mobile skype the same as desktop skype is a bloated, useless piece of sh..software.
The reason the sound is breaking is probably because skype takes up all the available processor's resources and it's not enough for it.
I use fring, the sound quality is not as good, but at least it's bearable.

Yes it works through wifi. It's a while since I set it up, but simply put, if you are connected to your PC by wifi and the connection connects to the internet then Skype will too.
