Hi all,
XDA Atom official specs here.
PRO:
- 416MHz Intel Bulverde CPU
- 128 MB storage, 64 RAM
- WM 5.0
- 262K colors
- WiFi 802.11b
- EDGE
- Radio FM
- Bluetooth 1.2 with: headset, hands-free, object push, serial port, dial-up network, advanced audio distribution (A2DP), Audio/Video Remote Control (AVRCP)
- 2.0 MPixel Camera with led flash
- stereo speaker
CONS:
- 2.7 inches screen (magician is 2.8 )
- miniSD slot !!!
It seems a good successor for our magician, ways better than MDA Compact II; miniSD slot however it's a great disadvantage!
Bye
What is the biggest size of mini-SD ? 512 MB ? 1024 MB ?
Which one will you buy ? ATOM or WIZARD ? and WHY ?

I won't buy a Wizard, too fat, too slow, and I don't need a wobbly keyboard.
I may buy the Atom because small size is 75% of what I'm looking for in a PPC phone. The Atom appears to be the smallest device with the most screen real estate possible. Eventually future models will get even thinner. I'll wait for a few reviews before taking the plunge. Meanwhile my Jam works just fine.
416MHz? The same as the Magician? Does this mean ROM compatibility?

My old Pentium II at school had a 400MHz CPU too but i don't think it was ROM-compatible with our magician!!!
But we can cross our fingers...
Bye bye,
Isidoro
CPU is the same (Intel PXA272 416MHz) but since the manufacturing company is different (Quanta instead of HTC), I doubt that the rest of the hardware is the same. Different hardware => different drivers => different ROMs :'(

According to mobile-review.com, the camera is not 2.0 Megapixel at all. It is the exact same old crapola camera with "software enhancement"/interpolation/whatever.
Other than that, the specs look good. Hopefully its a decent one.

The specifications say that it is a 2 MP CMOS Camera. The CMOS implies that it is not software interpolation. However, as has been said may times, 2MP guarantees size but not quality!
CMOS refers to a type of sensor - its nothing to do with the size of it (megapixels). The digital camera world is notorious for including these misleading "interpolation" specs as the specs of the lens, then explaining it in fine print elsewhere.
If this model features the same camera/lens as is found in the Wizard, then its a 1.3MP camera. Read here:
From: http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-wizard-en.shtml
The camera has the maximum physical resolution of 1.3 megapixel (1280x1024). At the same time "software" resolution is 2 megapixel by interpolating the initial image. There is no sense in such resolution (by this means the camera doesn't become a 2-megapixel one, the image quality isn't better), it's just a psychological thing

If its clearly known that this in the Atom is an entire different lens fromw hat is found in the sister models, that's one thing - okay. But given that these are all essentially mix-and-match models, built on the same generation, of the same platform, honestly I wouldn't hold your breath on that.
cmos is the camera ppc and nokia etc phones use (cause it uses less power) teh digital cameras have ccd (or something like this )lenses
the ccd camera of 1.3 megs resolution is better than cmos 1.3 camera
so dont hold your breath for the cmos 1.3 camera on the ATOM

I'm with you completely on this. What I meant is that usually when they say "2MP CMOS" they mean that the CMOS sensor is capable of reading 2MP.
When the resolution is interpolated they would say something like 2MP (1.3MP CMOS).
But this depends on how honest the company wants to be. It can be very misleading!

i agree ¬¬'
Definitely. Would be good though
With anything larger than 4.3" screen, the device would really begin to become uncomfortable to use. Even as much as I like the screen on the HD2, sometimes it feels gigantic for 1 hand functions. Those specs sound more like a tablet than a phone.
Where can I preorder ?
Hey man! That sounds so plausible, but it's not actually true. I got the HD3 specs from my mate, Mr. Taiwanese who works for HTC and he's got a HD3.
The real specs are...

So false it's funny
The "original" news source reports a leaflet with the size of the device. 65mm*115mm*10mm. I can easily suppose there's potential to make it even thinner, but there's no way it can be smaller with a bigger screen.
Loving the "more big" scribbles on the picture ... lol
1280 × 800 resolution is not supported in 7 Series, from what I have heard.
And I don't think they will launch the HD3 with WM 6.5.3. ROFL
Either the Resolution is wrong/fake, or this whole rumor = BS.
EDIT: Is 1280 × 800 resolution supported in 6.5.3 btw? Wait... Argh, I am wasting my time...

Yep, would be going down the iPad direction, to big for its use. The HD2 size is as big as I would want a mobile phone to be.
On the 'tipster' link which goes to the "source of the information" (http://mobilementalism.com/2010/03/15/leaked-pics-and-specs-of-htc-hd3-one-word-stunning/) there are a few pictures and one is a low quality list of specifications...
On this picture (http://mobilementalism.com/imageSnag/3768-4b9e890364290.jpg) note the words:
Front camera: video call
Show me the front camera on any of the included pictures...
Blatent crock of <censored>!
(sighes, shakes head and sighes again)
I like how it says As you can see from the pics, it’s the real deal – it’s definitely not vapourware.
Cant believe no one has picked up on the fact that those specs say "32GB external memory".
Windows Phone 7 series has no removable storage support.
FAIL

and about 30 minutes of battery life...
Let´s face it: if HTC builds the HD3 we don´t need that crappy WM7 which is of no good for nuthin`, just for stups that are barely able to handle an iPhone.
HD3 should run a stripped version of WinXP, cause with the roumored specs it plays the same league as Sony VAIO P, only better
the specs are slightly fake as it does say 32GB external memory which isn't allowed...for WM7 phones
Actually, apart from the screen, those specs seem quite similar to those of the HTC EVO.
It should have 32gb built in mem like the iPhone
why HTC doesnt do that ?

14.4Mbps theoretical. In the real world you could expect 6Mb-8Mb speeds as long as you are in an area where the cell towers are HSPA+. According to AT&T the entire existing 3G footprint will be upgraded by summer 2011.

SAMOLED is a great technology but there are some things that bugged me about it.
-The image retention being the scariest, I don't want things burnt into my screen...
-I could see the sub pixels or the pentile matrix, and it bugged me a lot.
-SAMOLED are more efficient depending what you have on the screen...
If you have a lot of white one the screen they use MORE power than lcd or slcds.

i know it' only 0.3 larger then 4" screen, but your eyes will notice the huge difference! larger screen = easier to read = easier for the eyes = your eyes is more relax looking at it!

It's not really 4G. It's a faster 3G. Faster, so they call it 4, but it's technically not.

It's just a question of how much AT&T is going to charge for the privilege of using the "official" hotspot feature. If it's an extra $20 to access the same 2 GB data bucket, then no thank you. I'll stick with PDAnet or Easytether, or root it and enable wi-fi tether on my own.
At least with Verizon's new hotspot plan, you get an EXTRA 2 GB to access through the hotspot for your $20.

Hello,
With this being talked about now, what will your realistic Project Ara phone have?
Mine is pretty simple:
Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz
Adreno 330 450MHz
2 GB RAM
3.8 V 2300 mAh, 8 Wh, Qi wireless charging
Slide out QWERTY physical keyboard
4.96 in (126 mm) diagonal IPS LCD with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (1080×1920 px (444 ppi))
8 MP with OIS, f/2.4 aperture and Xenon flash.
1.3 MP Front Camera
3.5 mm TRRS
GPS
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Bluetooth 4.0
NFC
Infrared port
Every damn radio band so I can use GSM/3G/4G all over the world
Now that I look at it, this phone sounds pretty familiar.........
My price range would be $400 - $500
What about you?
Also, lets keep it realistic, real (no transformer from phone to PC or fantasy crap) and considering phone/budget of each person. Basically what Project Ara is really about and can offer.
Im editing the title again: Please keep it realistic Who knows what people are reading this thread. If we post things like 8K resolution screen phones for 200 bucks, we cannot keep this realist.c
I'd be willing to pay up to $600 for a device with 8GB of internal storage with an external storage option, a 21Mp camera with OIS and various low light optimizations, It needs to be at least dual core running at no less than 1.8 Ghz, it needs 2Gb of RAM, an adreno 330 GPU, a 4.7in screen with a resolution that's above 720p, wireless charging, ALL the radios!, wifi 80211ac, a front camera that has 720p recording and is at least 1.3mp, extremely tunable audio quality, and a slightly curved screen.

Just asking for a good DAC and a curved screen will shoot it up more than $600
I based off mine a existing phone and depending on that raised the price compared to it...
For me:
Top-line specs (cpu ram etc...)
But the extra stuff i would buy into it is a good DAC (digital analog converter). I like to hear quality music.
And a best of the bests camera with a big and fast sensor (maybe foveon x3), 3diagonal OIS, led+xenon AND full manual control in it's software. I want to control shutter speed, ISO, explosure, OIS on/off, timer, intervalometer, HDR, brust mode, pixel oversampling and RAW capturing.
I don't want to take photos like on DSLR, but these things are good to have in the creative process :--)

Really i want there to be clean choices.
saying you want a snapdragon 800 in it or a 21 megapixel camera wont help you if that phone comes out in a year or so.
An option to get it pre-assembled.
A rating system for blocks, if you replace a block, ask you to rate/comment on it after a week or so.
More then one company making them.
Multiprocessor support. Get your Snapdragon and your Exynos. More power. Maybe limit that to just more then one copy of the same chip though, i do not see how it would work otherwise.
A separate block that contains the headphone jack, usb, ... so that it can be replaced without replacing the more expensive components.
A small internal battery, so that you can exchange the battery block without rebooting.
Different body shapes. Tablet--Phablet--Phone--Phone with keyboard
An E ink screen option.
Price, depends on components.
An E ink phablet-phone is something else then a DUAL-Tegra with 3 extra battery blocks, 4k screen and no radios except wifi.
- separate DAC/amp (i imagine these will be built into the SoC so hopefully OEMs can make modules that override this)
- 4000mAh battery
- landscape QWERTY
- probably a screen no bigger than 4.7" given that an overly large screen would make using the keyboard untenable
- camera module with a decent sensor size & xenon flash
- multiple SD/microSD card support
- projector
i don't imagine you could have all of these modules on the phone at once though
I'd love to have a phone with a 4.3" 720p AMOLED screen and a Pureview Camera with a hardware shutter key.
CPU would be an Intel Atom paired with 2 GB RAM and 32 GB storage. Also, dual-boot with Android and WP (or whatever OS I want to put on there)
Oh, and the price? $500, maybe? (modular, of course)
I should have added that please make the phone and price realistic; Some of you are saying technologies such as PureView cameras when that is a trademark by Nokia and Nokia would NEVER open source it (with reason and I agree with them)
Independent vendors such as nikon, canon, etc.. might produce modules and provide propietary bins.. nokia as motorola's competitor would probably not agreed. W/o seeing the mdk, I can only guess companies [and a few gifted individuals] would have the resources to develop, nano-cize and produce said modules.. or will motorola be taking a you design.. we produce line.. Future looks exciting either way.. I'd pay $600 for full phone [base + enough modules to make it standard] but in just [visually] glancing the [proposed] module spacing, we'd be lucky to get battery you suggested.. Doesn't seem room unless thickness added [or two module spaces used].. which is/are a bleh idea(s) imo.
