Universal Serial Ports? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi,
I need to use my universal to connect to a bluetooth serial adapter (as I have always done with my blue angel), but, the M$ stack is pretty useless. I do however have some questions about what serial ports the universal thinks it has, had or can have...
Serial devices enumerated by PocketTTY are:
QCT Data Interface on COM9
RIL on COM6
Serial Cable on COM1
Infrared Port
Ir on COM3
The M$ BT Stack allows me to set an outgoing com port and choose from COM0 to COM9, but it only actually allows configuration of COM0, COM4 and COM8, all the rest produce some dumb message about not being able to create the port.
So, my question is, what are all the other ports for?
Does the universal support a serial cable? if so, where and how do you plug it in? If not, then what are all these COM ports for?
Thanks.

If we assume that QCT is
'QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies'
then it is an UMTS control port.
Serial Cable on COM1

SIR and serial cable are muliplexed on
Blueangle, maybe here too.
Ir on COM3

Probably some remains from the development/debug phase.

Ok, more information...

Ok, so what's COM1 doing?
I get the rest of it, except COM7 which I don't understand, any ideas?
With all the crap in the way, there's only two ports free for BT which is not good.

'Lost' Bluetooth Connection with Holux 236

Need your help please! I seem to have lost my Bluetooth partnership on my Vario/Wizard with the Holux..(although the Holux is still working fine with my IPAQ which I use for emergencies)
Going into the Vario/Wizard BT settings...its found the Holux fine..and under devices it's showing OK. I've tapped on it and hit Save, but, moving along to Com Ports and hitting 'New Outgoing Port', the Holux shows up, but when I hit next, it shows Com port 6 (or 7) but says 'Comport could not be opened etc.'
How do I open up, or release com 6 and/or 7 ?...Very annoying as TomTom 6 has been working just great, but I don't know what I must have accidently done to screw up the partnership. I've tried to connect on all the Com Ports shown on the TT device, using the 'Othe Blutooth GPS receiver' option, but no luck.
Appreciate a response. Thanks.
well I have a holux as well
I've gotten it to work via COM6 or COM7. Apparently I only have 2 COM ports available COM6 or COM7. One of them is being used for my laptop. So, I chose the available port as my Outgoing port to Holux. If both COM6 and COM7 are used, you may have to delete one of the ports, and assign Holux to use it. You can click and hold on any of the other COM ports and then edit and delete the port configurations.
Good luck, hope that helps a bit.
Thanks a lot..stupid I know, but where do I look to delete a port ! Thanks.
settings->Connections->Bluetooth->COM Ports
Keep the stylus pressed on the port you want to delete until the context menu appears, delete it.
Then, click new outgoing port and recreate it
Use the new created port (6 or 7) with TomTom
Hope it works...
Magic ! thankyou so much.... Mike.

Using COM1 for Bluetooth Serial

Dear all,
is there any possible way i can create a Bluetooth serial connection on COM1?
i believe COM1 is already taken by infrared or what not.. so i'm only able to allocate COM4 upwards..
any idea what binds to COM1 on the universal?
any idea how to unbind it so i can free up that port?
okay i found a software called "Serial Splitter Mobile" that allowed me to disable COM1, and i was eventually able to bind a bluetooth serial port to it and use it without issues.
just curious if this software did it through a registry tweak or what.. cuz all i got was the free trial, and i needed a permanent solution!

External Com-Port for the Magician

Hello,
i have an Magician an searching for an Com-Port. The Device has only an Micro-USB- / Mic.- Port. I saw at the wiki that there is a Port at the CPU called RX/TX /dev/tty2, can i use this as Com Port (with a max232?), for an serial GPS reciver an Terminal Aplications ?
Martin
You cannot use a serial GPS with Magician. You MUST use a bluetooth GPS.
There is no serial connector and "Serial over USB" is not implemented in ROM.
is there no way to use the com 2 from the cpu pinout, even if i modify the magician ?
I dont think so. You would be the first after YEARS to find this out. Anyway /dev/tty2 is linux??
You should better try something like this, saves you hassle:

Serial Port for Athena t-mobile ameo

I cant find a pinout for the 16pin plug and was wondering where I can find it, but I dont think that would help me anyway.
I have a requirement for a Standard Serial port (RS232 type not USB).
Does anyone have any experience/advice on how to do this?
Do USB to serial adapters work?
Is there a mini SD to Serial port that anyone makes?
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance
Jon
Have a look at something like this http://www.roalan.com/Bluetooth Wireless Serial RS232 Converter.htm you will have to code your own application for the phone to make use of it, I have used a similar device with my Athena - Mike
Thanks,
I am trying to avoid a wireless conection. What I am trying to do is use the Athena as a moving map for a glider. To do this I need to make use of an external GPS NMEA source. The software I am using works fine on a pda that has a std com port, I am hoping for a 'quick fix' to try it on the athena.
will this work, I havent looked for drivers yet tho!

I have to ask the obvious question though, why not use the internal GPS receiver in the phone? - if the application software you have isn't capable of switching the internal GPS on (some struggle with this) use Fransons GPS Gate to activate the inbuilt receiver and configure the ports, I would expect the inbuilt GPS to work quite well in a glider to be honest, and it does output NMEA data - what mapping application are you trying to use?
USB / RS232 converters are not the way forwards though, the mini USB port on the device is not a true USB port, it will not work with this sort of hardware, even if it did the converters generally don't work well as they don't use standard RS232 voltage levels - Mike
A good question. The external NMEA source contains additional sentances for things like accurate air speed and vertical speed that comes from a flight computer making measurements of the air. This is used for some of the calculations on the PDA. The software I will probably use is called SeeYou http://www.naviter.si/products/seeyou-mobile.php. There are several others, but this seems to work best in Landscape which is how I want it.
The internal GPS works fine with the software just to give map position.
I have managed to get it working by emulating a NMEA output over Bluetooth from a PC. I will try something like the Bluetooth to serial adapter and see what happens!

Missing "new outgoing port" in bluetooth..

Hi
The "New outgoing port" from blue tooth menu is missing from my device. I actually need to use SimpleSms or smartGSM in order to synchronize the SMS from my PPC to Nokia 6120c.
Both devices can communicate via BT, but the outgoing port is needed for above mentioned tools.
I am very much confused about it..
I have read some threads, but didn't get any idea about this, so posting my own question here.
Kindly provide some help, that how can I add some outgoing port in the blue tooth options.
I'm using (Jas Jam) SPV M3100 (Orange)
Thanks a lot
Wireless RS232 communication between PC and Bluetooth Enabled Phone
Setting Up your PC
Go to Bluetooth settings on your desktop and tap to Devices. Select your device and click properties.
Tab to services and make sure that Direct Dial-Up Network is not selected.
Tab to COM Ports and click the Add button.
Select the radio button for Incoming. Click OK
There should now be a COM Port listed.
Click OK again.
Open HyperTerminal configured for the COM port that you just added.
Open the COM Port. If the COM port is not open your Bluetooth phone will not see it.
Setting Up your Bluetooth enable phone
Make sure that the COM Port you configured on your PC is still open.
Go to Bluetooth settings on your phone.
Tab to devices. Select the device that corresponds to your PC’s Bluetooth adapter.
You should now be in Partnership settings. Click Refresh.
The Serial Port service should be available.
Check the check box for the Serial Port service and click save.
Tab to COM Ports.
Tap New Outgoing Port and select the device corresponding to your PC’s Bluetooth adapter and click next.
Select a com port from the combo box and click finish.
Note: If you select one that is not available you will get a message to select a different COM port, you get this message because the COM port that you selected is already being used.
You are now done setting up your PC and Bluetooth enabled phone for serial communication.
You still need to match up the serial port settings on your Phone with the setting on your PC.
