Special Edition Removal of Programs - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Hi,
How can I remove some or all of the programs that Special Edition comes with? Especiall remove them from the front screen at startup?
Thanks!

Programs can't be removed, because they are located in the ROM.....
If you just want to delete the icon on the today screen, you have to adapt the settings of the tdlaunch today-plugin....
Stefan

cybermed, you can cook your own rom and choose which programs to include or exclude, if you have no reason for specifically using the special edition rom then go to Lumpis kitchen and cook your own. You cannot remove programs in the basic rom image but you do have control over the extra programs.

Customize Dictionary? / Regedit for wm5? / Cab Questions...

first, I just want to say that you are all bloddy briliant and your dedication to making your Universal TRULY yours is incredible.
I have four questions that I GOTS to have answered:
1) Is there a way to edit the dictionary in wm5? I use a lot of legal terms and it would be a great time-saver if I could put a bunch of them into the dictionary so I wouldn't have to type them all the time...
2) Someone made a registry editor for wm5 and I'm forgetting who. I need this so I can remove the damn yahoo.com as the default page on PIE.
3) Relatedly, I customize a lot of settings after a fresh hardboot. is there a way to export my settings (font size, menu items, stuff like that) so I can just click it upon re-install and my preferred settings are restored? I'm assuming that this is a registry backup thing, but am not sure...
4) I need some general cab guidance. I used the "cooked cab" thread (ABSOLUTELY WELL DONE) to give myself a fresh custom software install, but want to include several of the programs I bought with the cooked cab process as well. I THINK I understand how to add them to the config script, but I don't know how to extract the cab files from their setup files (like pocket informant for example) and thus I can't add them to my setup routine. Can someone instruct me how to do that?
Again, thank you for all contributors and my donation is coming momentarily...

how do i remove programs like "HotSpots" from Star

any 1?
I have programs like: Email Setup, O2active...
1) how do i remove them so that after a HR they will return ??
2) i managed to find Email setup - but after deleting the files - i still have blanc shortcut in Start>Programs saying email-setup (with empty icon).
why?
can i remove only shortcuts but keep the program?
These things you wanna remove are installed everythime you hard reset. THey are programs in the extended ROM. These are customizations to WM5 that the retailer (imate, o2,qtek, t-mobile) put on the device.
If you don't want to install any of these do the following:
1. Hard Reset Device.
2. you'll go thru a series of screens:
2.1 Welcome Message
2.2 Align Screen
2.3 Tap and Hold tutorial
2.4 Password Configuration
2.5 Ending Screen that asks you to press screen to continue.
3. RIGHT AFTER step 2.5 (after you tap the screen) press the RESET hole.
This will bypass installing all the files in extended ROM which normally shown by a progress bar at the bottom everytime you do a normal hard reset.
4. Now you can Install the stuff in the extended ROM one at a time. Only the ones you need to install. To access the ExtendedROM (it is hidden) download Total Commander (search thru google) and type \EXTENDED_ROM in the navigation window and it will display the contents of the extended ROM.
I don't have O2 so i cannot explain to you what each individual .CAB file does. Just use a little guess work. THe O2Active, i believe is easily spotted. It's the biggest CAB file. Don't click on it so it won't install.
Tell me if this helped you out or if you need more clarifications.
Hola Jorge
First of all - Thanks for the great explanation !!
Although I do want most of the stuff, i already tried corporate mode (clean install) but I missed a lot of things.
therefor I installed Basic mode. (which hasnt got ALL the features)
But - some of the features i DO want to take away.
(NOT FROM EXT ROM)
only for now... programs in the Start>Program>
Lets say I wanna take the games away...
where are all the programs installed TO ??
I found some of them. but when I deleted the email setup for instance -
I still have an empty Email Icon in START>PROGRAMS>
(again i remind U - I wanna leave the ext rom as it is)
10x again !!
Some features in the ExtROM are installed in Corporate mode too, the sure way to customize is to bypass ExtROM, then install one-by-one the .CAB files you want.
Anyway regarding the Games, etc. they are part of the OS so cannot be uninstalled unless they came with the extended ROM like Backgammon that came with the JASJAR ExtROM.
To delete the ICON that is blank but still has text, go to \WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\GAMES
You'll find the shortcut there. Or just to \WINDOWS\START MENU to see all the oter shortcuts in case you wanna remove other stuff.
The games are installed in WINDOWS and a shortcut is created to the Star Menu Directory. Just delete the shortcut.
What does "10x again !!" mean?

/extended rom/

how do i get to the extended rom directory? i have a t-mobile mda and have total commander (reg editor) installed. I can't find the /extended rom/ directory and also don't really understand what is or what it is there for. i know this might sound like a remedial question to HTC Wizard experts, but if someone could help me I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, if it matters, I'm running xelecin's custom 2.26 ROM.
Thanks.
You won't see it by browsing.. just type in "/extended_rom" and TC will open it. Don't forget the underscore (_) character..
Gee - my first post!
thanks. i entered "/extended_rom" and it brought me to the directory. now that i know how to find it, what is it exactly there for? What is it's purpose. Also, can you access it from activesync? Thanks again for answering these questions.. i'm a beginner with PPCs, but I'm curious about how they work.
Thanks again.
Use the advanced search feature (under the search option tab) to look within the wizard updating forum for the term "extended rom", and you can start to understand how some of the rom developers utilize it (There are 12 pages of entries). These guys are the real 'wizards' - I could not begin to explain the way they do (I'm too new myself).
Your extended ROM contains all of your customizations. If it is a stock ROM it will have all of your carrier customizations. If you have a cooked Ext ROM it could have lots of things. One of the benefits is that if you have to completely clear out the storage it would re-install all the customizations that were in the ext rom.

so, in simple terms, if you were doing a hard reset (or clear storage in settings), the extended rom directory retains the files, and installs them if they are .cab files.. am I getting warm? Thanks for the info.
you got it. The carriers put it there so that one wouldn't have to call into tech support if you had to do a hard reset.
ok. i get this now. just a couple more questions..
-Do the .CAB files have to be in the main directory (/extended_rom/) or can they be in any subfolder?
-I was reading somewhere that it's a read-only directory.. is there a way to delete files, if so, can you delete the files one at a time or all once?
-finally, can you access the directory from active sync?
Thanks for all the help. I appreciate it.
As far as I know it is unable to be accessed through Active sync. And yes you can delete them off one by one. I would reccomend reading up on it. Faria has produced a wondrful guide on how to cook your extended ROM. When you delete a cab you also have to change the config settings in the notepad file. I have dabbled a little but Faria's guide will help you more.
!!!WARNING!!! if you delete the files from your ext rom and do a hard reset none of the carrier customizations will be installed.. furthermore.. you will not gain any extra space by deleting the cabs, it is a read only partition.. also with that being said, if you try to delete a file from there or add one you take a great risk of corrupting the ext rom and you will be forced to reflash the rom in order to get them back.
just one more question.. I have xelecin's 2.26 custom rom on my MDA. I'm thinking of switching over to either molski's or faria's latest rom. when i flash those roms, the extended rom from the current rom i'm using gets replaced with the custom rom's extended rom, right? does that make sense? Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions and actually answering them! Oh yeah, when i installed the rom i'm using now it did a CID unlock before flashing, so i assume my phone is still unlocked, right?
Thanks again for all the help. i really appreciate it.
thats right. - you'll get the new extended rom.
Extended Rom Contents
I only install a portion of the T-Mobile customization, which I accomplish by preventing the install of the extended rom. I have copied onto my miniSD the files I want to install, and then I just manually run the cabs from there. (Actually, that would erase them, so I copy them first.)
Then you can experiment with other ROMs, still getting the customizations that you need. Here is my thread on this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=272613
I no longer install MP-Shorcut-MMS1-Voice-CV-TMUS-060404.CAB because that just adds MMS to the Messaging app and a shortcut for making voice tags and I don't use MMS.
By the way, it is really useful to install things like Total Commander, Memmaid, weather programs, RSS readers, Zagat, and so on to the miniSD, because then they don't need to be reinstalled after a hard reset. The only thing I have to do is add the shortcuts back, because shortcuts are erased after a hard reset. These programs will no longer auto-update, since nothing can run automatically from the miniSD, but with memmaid you can create automatic updates if you like.
Your backup program should always run from main memory! Also, programs that affect the today screen should also be run from main memory for increased speed. Pretty much everything else can go on the miniSD.

Stop Progs from EXtRom to install

Hi
I am a newbie to tweaking PDAs and I am expecting a new P3300 from expansys... question is how do I stop unwanted programs from ExtRom to install?
Thank you
My guess is you can't stop them from being installed in original ROM cause that's how it's built. But unofficial, custom ROM builds tend to modify ExtROM.
What can be done is accessing of ExtROM and removing programs from there, but I haven't read much on this subject. Check this for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285519
I am not sure if it is what you want. To stop all the crap from network provider from installing after hard reset I used to soft reset the device as soon as it finishes startup. There is a message for about 2-3 sec that customization is going to install. I then press the reset button and have clean OS (except some small customizations like internet settings and some icons).
one other way to do it which worked for me. i installed Total Commander CE then in the command line I typed \Extended_ROM and it showed the contents of my ExtROM. i deleted all files from there, did a hard reset, and of course nothing was installed from extROM.
unfortunately, some unneccessary programs are in the ROM, not extROM. and there's just no way to delete them, but to create custom ROM....
hi dim4x4 and Adigital
thanks for replying, what I actually intend to do is stop installation of crap software when hard resetting (like clearvue pdf viewer)that are built in to the extended ROM. I just want to install those ones that are necessary to run the machine. I will be getting the HTC p3300.
In my case ClearView is in the ROM, not ExtROM. Try Dopod custom ROMs, they have Adobe Reader LE instead of ClearView.

I rarely use Acrobat - infact never - is it possible to remove this from the ROM? can save 2MB space !!!

can i remove packages from a ROM?

is there a way to remove a certian package or folder / program without leaving junk behind? i have an energy rom and it is loaded with extras i dont use, but liek the rom nonetheless and would rather just remove a few bits to speed things along / free up memory etc. (nothing shows up in the "remove programs" option)

yes, you can. Install a kitchen, take the Rom you like to use and remove those packets. After cooking your own ROM you can flash it so that you have exactly what you want
wil it be as easy as that? or will i need to learn how to cook a rom?

Sure, you should know what you are doing. So you have to learn how to cook roms
