XDA II Message Tone??? - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Ok this may be some stupid questions (I have only had my XDA II a couple of hours)
1) How can I use a custom sms message tone?
2) Where can I get free software for my XDA II
3) Is it possible to get a new case for my XDA II as its a bit scratched?
Many Thanks

Hi Chris!
1) Go to Start -> Settings -> Sounds and Notification -> Notification
There you can set the sounds for any events.
If you have a sound you want to use as your SMS-Sound, but can't find it in the drop-down list you need to do the following: Copy the sound-file (no matter if it is a *.mp3 or *.wav) simply in the Windows-Folder. Any Sounds listed in there will appear in the drop-down list.
2) there are quite a few Websites you can visit. Try
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/
They have a lot of stuff.
3) I havn't heard of that. Maybe it is possible. But I don't know.

didn't think you could use mp3 files for ringtones. Don't you have to convert them to wav format?

On the MDA/XDA II you can use MP3 as ringtones. I have one myself. But I think with the former PDAs it was not possible.

on my himalaya i can use wma and mid and wav as ringtones
but the normal notifications like recieving sms can only be wav
thats using 2003

Message sounds?

My first post in this incredible forum, I have all ready found so much help here and are most thankful, please keep it up.
Is it possible to make your own message sounds and use them when recieving text messages etc.
If possible at all what format should the file be in (mp3 wav)?
Tried with an mp3 placed in the windows folder it seems it cant find it.
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm not an expert so hopefully one will reply, but I think they have to be .wav and I think they have to go in the \windows\rings folder.
cheers

Actually, you are 1/2 right, they need to be wavs, but they go directly into windows, not in the rings folder.
Steve
Yep steve is correct the sound file will need to be a .wav and place into the windows folder, ring tones can be mid,wav and so on and they are placed into the rings folder within windows.
Sound file converter???

You might try Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
It's a free download. I use Sound Editor in Roxio's Media Creator 8 -- one of the MANY useful tools in that program.

YW -- (but I'm a GAL -- not a guy)!! LOL!! But, that's ok -- none of my friends can believe how "techy" I am, either. But, I'm the first one they come running to with a problem. Go Figger!!
Cheers all,
You keep refering to ring sounds, I am looking for Sounds for alarms and recieved messages, and alerts in general.
But I will try it now with wav files in stead of mp3.
Manindesert,
I'm using Sound Forge 7, but then again I really need it for all my music stuff, so give Audacity a shot.
Update Works fine with alarm and message sounds, thank you all.
Is there any way, hack or otherwise, that will allow you to point your rings/sounds to your SD card? Thought it would be nice to free some space and stop having to move files on and off the card. I change my ring tone with my mood
Javahater,
I've been loking for a hack/program/setting that will do that, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, all SMS & ring tones must be located in main memory!
But there's a possibility to create a program that will browse a folder of ring tones on SD card & once u select a tone, it will be copied to main memory (and of course erase the old default tone from main memory) & will set this new file as the default ring tone for the phone.
Javahater and Ezzkht,
Maybe you should look here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks scroll down to this "ANY FOLDER RING TONES"
You will need a Registry Editor like Total Commander 2 or PHM Regedit
Hope this helps
Javahater,
Have been trying above solution for about an hour, seems that this solution doesn't work under WM5, or at least it doesn't make any difference if you change the folder or not (it only points to windows not windows\rings)
Will have to keep looking.

AGREED !! I've got WM2003SE tried the steps mentioned http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard_Tweaks no use.......it still picks up the default folder from \windows\rings, where as I am pointing it towards \Storage Card\Sound\ not working
ok just double checked.....in sounds and notifications options it goes to \windows\rings folder.....but I have o2 plus installed as well...and in o2 plus sounds and notifications options it points me to \Storage Card\Sound any ideas ?
Ezzkht,
Happy t worked for you, can't say the same for me.
Well it is getting more and more weird, when I look in my registry it only points to \windows\ not even \windows\rings\, despite this it still manages to pick up ringtones/sounds in the rings directory, and all sound files placed in the root of the SD Card(go figure).
I'm out of ideas right now, but am still looking for a solution and will be back if I find one.
I just used Resco Explorer with the registry editor add-in.
It worked with me without a soft-reset!
What device do you have, Mike?
Maybe some nice sounds
Hello everyone!
It's a little bit off topic, a little bit not
My advice: SD card is not really a good place for sounds, at least in my case. Why? Sometimes it happened that when I got a phone call, instead of my nice ringtone I've heard the standard one. I think it has sth to do with powering up SD card while changing from standby mode. It's just my impression.
Secondly: I'm looking for some nice SMS ringtones, not the funky ones... I'm getting a lot of messages and it's really boring if you hear "Heeeeellooooo! Your message is coooooomingggg!" every now and then. I will appreciate if you could share your ringtone with me

Changing Sounds of Notifications - such as "Message Sen

I searched the registry, found nothing, searched through some folders and found nothing either.
So as the subject says, is it possible to change these types of sounds? I've got some great sounds in mind. E.g. the sonic the hedgehog ring, for this event in particular.
... For new text I have the sonic 2 - 1 up sound
If you could help that would be great!
Hay there, yep this can be done, thou first you need the new message or notifcation clip to be a .wav file type, so you need to convert the items to wav first.
Once you done that place the newly converted wav file into the windows folder, not into windows>rings like you would do for ringtones.
Then goto settings, and notifcation and sound menu and select the new one there.
Hope this helps.
Ooo
I've been trying to figure this out, how could I change the sound that plays in my ear for callwaiting? lol i feel stupid because I can't figure this out!!!
Thanks!
Yup, I am not too happy in this realm as well. My busy tone sounds like a Modem that is trying to handshake, and that is when it decides that it is going to alert me. I would really like to swap out some of that stuff.
I beleive my expertise will come in handy here
There are many sounds which can be changed which ARE NOT visible in the "Sounds And Notifications" control panel. They can be accessed by pointing your reg editor of choice to...
"HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Sounds"
We'll take the busy tone as an example...
Navigate to "HKey_Current_User\ControlPanel\Sounds\BusyTone"
In there you'll see:
(Default)..................(value not set)
Catagory..................InCall
Script.......................apr
Sound......................HTCBusy.wav
Change the sound one to any file on your pda. (Must be an mp3 or a wave file) (Include the full path if the sound file isn't in "/windows") The changes should take effect immediately, if they don't you've not done it correctly...
Hope this helps you all...
Note: To my knowledge, you can't change the message sent tone, sorry...

1. went to my storage card and with a long tap on the short menu I've choosen 'set as ringtone'..doesn't work
2. trough the 'sounds&notification' menu, 'notifications' choosen an 'event' known caller and set my ringtone..but it doesn't work..
The phone doesn't make a sound for incoming call, tryed it from fixed and mobile network, no message of incoming call, I only see a little ear phone near the signal icone...and after that I get a message 'cprog.exe' ??
any idea what that may be?
thank you for your help..

Where is your file located? If it is not in the My Ringtones folder you will need to place it there and then select it...
It wont read it off of the storage card for some odd reason
Hy...
I've copied the file in My Ringtones, and when I check in Sounds&Notifications-Manage it's there..so it's in phone memory...I still get the same error...
That should have done the trick. It could be something odd happening with that particular song.
I would try a bunch of different ones to eliminate that possibility. All you have to do is have the song in the "My Ringtones" folder and select it in sounds and it should work.
MP3s as ringtones work on my Treo Pro...
Are you using a long MP3....in other words over 30 seconds in length? I have cut my MP3s to 30 seconds.
By the way, Microsoft provides 79 free ringtones (some are short for SMS, etc. alerts). (Microsoft and free are rarely used in the same sentence.) Cut and paste and go to:
http://www.treoprotricks.com/post/2...r-your-Windows-Mobile-PDA-and-Smartphone.aspx
And there is indeed a completely free MP3 ringtone download site:
http://www.zedge.net/
Listen to the download before you actually download. (My name there is MaxLaw843 if you like the blues or Scottish music....search for me.)
Hy guys,
GOT IT!..
I cut the mp3 song to exactly 18 seconds...I also have another three songs in that 'My Ringtones' folder, and the same problem occurs..but, I tested it againd and found out that three of my melodies work and two don't..
three that work are complete songs..and two that don't are cut..but they work when played in wmplayer in the phone ??
any idea maybe??
tnx for your time
three melodies that work are at 128kbps and two that don't are at 198kpbs...
how can i change kbps?

Sms Ringtones

Hello, does anyone knows how can we set different sound for sms?
Finally can we install games such as Tomb Raider to our Xperia?
Thank you.
Roughly translating from swedish interface now:
Start -> Settings -> Sounds and messages -> Messages (tab).
Select "Messages: new sms" and change tune.
About games, there's more info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459248
welcome!
So it's your first post eh?
Congrats!
By the way before posting it's usually advisable to do a bit of lurking first....that way you'd learn about the wonderful search facility that this forum posesses.
Neat huh!
Annnnywaaay....use total commander to drop a wav file of your music into the windows directory and then use start/settings/sound and notifications/notifications and change your sms message sound.
Don't know what Total commander is? (Hint:search!)
can i use an mp3 file? and do i drop it to the windows directory or there is a specific folder?
thank you

no, they don't have to be wav. You can just put the .mp3 in you're windows dir and it will show up between all your sms tones in settings.

some you can
but many people complain that tomb raider require more hardkeys then most
devices have to work ok

SMS sent notification sound

Anyone know the filename and loacation of the SMS sent notification sound, Iv had the same sound for the last 3 phone's and I think its time for a change!
Can it be changed?
where is its location?
do I have to do anything to the registery or just change the filename?
Thanks in advance
Edit:
I just figured out how to change the notification sound for the people who get it!
First download totalcmd "this allows you to replace files in use in the windows dir"
get your .wav or .wma file.. call it notify.wav (sometimes notify.wma)
Use totalcmd to replace the one in the windows directory with the one you created!
Cant belive it was that simple

Sorry misread your problem......
All you have to do is copy and paste the sound file you want into your windows folder (root) on you internal storage then go settings>sounds click notifications then hit drop down box until sms received etc then click on sound drop down find your sound file and click whatever you want it to do vibrate flash etc the click ok.......and as Gordon Ramsey says done
thx I was wondering why it didn't show my music files when I changed the sms sound. any restrictions to the format (mp3, wma, ...)?
So doesnt anyone know how to do this?
They are in the Windows folder, restricted to wma.

You have missread like eveyone else! im looking for the tone that plays when you SEND an SMS not when you get an sms
Mine doesn't make any sound when I send an SMS.
I wish it did, or at least give some notification that the message has been sent.
My TyTNII made a sound and displayed an on screen notification. The Leo seems to do neither.

I get both and I like having the notification I just want to change the sound because after 4 years of a really loud "duduling" it gets a little annoying
I did have a rom once on my Kaiser that had a diffrent sound but cant find how to change it anywhere!!!
Did you do anything to set up these notifications, or was it like that 'out of the box'?
I would really like to get them working on mine but failed so far. I've tried Advanced config and managed to get one notification, but since then nothing
Cheers
You get a sound when you SEND a SMS??
As above I get nothing what so ever, when I first got the phone I sent the same message 3 time before I realised it had actually sent!! lol
Another annoying 'feature'......

Does your Leo have an O2 branded ROM?
I wonder if they tweaked the notification bit before they released it.
I got mine SIM free, so it's a vanilla HTC ROM.
Mines unbranded SIM free, so shouldnt be tampered with!

I'll have a dig around the registry and see if I can find anything relevant.
Also trying to create a new folder in SMS. Again easy on my TyTNII but not so easy on the Leo.
I'm not so keen on the HTC messaging app so far.
If you want a delivery report...
Go into ALL MESSAGES when on the SMS tab , then MENU > SETTINGS > OPTIONS and check the box "Request Delivery Report".
Yeah but then every other message in your inbox is a DR!!!
We want a sent confirmation sound/pop up, and I want DR's that dont require opening, and have their own folder........... like a Nokia for example.
Wasn't this a Registry hack on the other WM phones. I remember having to check a box in a config app to get my HD to do this.

Yeah it was a registry setting.
If I remember correctly it was;
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings\SMSNoSentMsg
I have that set, but the Leo uses the HTC messaging app, so it doesn't work...
it works however if you disable htc messaging app. thanks for the tip.
