powerbutton-hack macgyver style (large imgs) - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi everyone
Just wanted to post my report of this hack, since my powerbutton got ruined for some
reason, i might have dropped the device too much, anyway, the powerbutton was bent/pushed
off the circuitboard, so, as usual, i decided to fix it somehow since the warranty already
had expired.
this is how the device looked before the surgery:

}
after disassembling the device, this is how the powerswitch looked on the circuitboard:
after soldering the switch back on the circuitboard, and testing the device, the button worked as it should, then i decided to
glue it to the circuitboard so it would stay there and not break again, great idea i thought,
but, after gluing it to the circuitboard, managing to put glue IN the switch, i had to remove the switch again and started trying
to "clean" the switch of all glue, but trying to clean a switch measuring 3 by 4 mm and reassembling it isn't that easy...
a disassembled switch:
so i decided to solder a couple of wires to the circuitboard instead, and the smallest switch i had around:
the final result, after adding some tape to keep it in place:
well, this is ofcourse a temporary solution until i can find an equal SMD-switch, shouldnt be that hard...
now i finally can upgrade the device from my buggy wm2003se to something else, like magneto...
and sorry for the large images, but i happen to like large images

looooooooool  it looks sexy man 8)
Why not you replace the micro-switch ?
You can find it at any electronics shop...
I bet you dare to answer incoming calls in front of poeple, hehehehe

WOW!!!!!
I bet you will have problems in the airport security checkpoint!!!
That looks like a bomb!!!

hello my friend. I have exactly the same problem. Can you please post a picture and tell e exactly where i should solder the wires? thanks a lot

That's looklike XDA I rather than XDA II.
But you have an excellent idea to figure out the problem.
Hee hee, Hope you find that switch.

What the hell.. i cant look! its a turture man.. lolx just kidding.. find a replacement button asap dude..

@Possan
man, you must be crazy... )))))))))))))))))))
LOL
good work...
buzz

this is probably the ugliest mod i've ever seen done to a phone! lol!
you gotta get that microswitch.. get that microswitch!
but it's one hell of a McGyver remedy! great job!

Man, I can't stop laughing. This is the "mod" of the year!
Great stuff!
Pat

looks pretty sexy,
nice job, and a great mod indeeed

Woooooooo ... i'm ... ... ... shocked. pardon me, but that is indeed one of the ugliest mod.
i sure look like a bomb ... pls get a replacement casing.

Haha
www.ppctechs.com fixed mine for $10! Including the missing power button on the outside.

Possan, maybe you should open your own repair and service centre.

Hey Buzz!!! ... What are you doing here?... Get back to the kitchen!!!

I think he out did Macguyver, that was over the top! Hey at least he got a working unit. Just don't whip that out on a crowded bus or in a bank, someone might think it's a detonator  . I'm just kidding, you did good in fixing it when you needed it. Maybe you can search the nearby thread on the guy with washed out xda2 in some water, he has a aligment problem and might can use some tips. Cheers.

ROFL!! u're the man! it's ugly but u sure got the job done. post the new image after u've manage to find the micro switch.
a lil story that out of topic :
my device once got soaked in the rain. the mic was broken so i sent it to the O2 centre to get it fix. they asked me to pay RM 1750 (that's about USD 460) bcoz they have to change to a new motherboard as they say that the mic is attached to the motherboard. that's just crazy. so i said to them just return the device to me. then i just use the Xda II with a bluetooth headset. i guess if i sent my device to u. maybe u could mod it with the big mic attached to my XDA.
just kidding man. good work anyway 8)

Orange OEM housing..

So i was browsing cnn.cn and found this :
http://cnn.cn/shop/tytn-iitilt-full-housing-orange-p-2243.html
Thought it was kinda cool but do u guys think it is truly OEM? I haven't seen or heard of a kaiser variant being released in this color.
If i didn't have my rubberized siedo case i think i would definitely do this.
I don't know if it is oem but I don't really care, I love it. My only issue with it is the price. Just too much money for me.
Jeff
Its not a full OEM thats the reason when you look at the back screen shot you see where the spraypaint job finished. I still think its sexxxy I just wish it had HTC branding on it

I just ordered this baby last week after a crash to concrete mishap with my Kaiser...my kit kit will include a new slide and a new display as well and a lot of courage from me...
Has anyone else here done this before? Would like to see pics of orange Kaiser (can't wait for the package to arrive)....
Post pics, before and after your done if you can and also if you get the tools with it and how long delivery takes, Im intrested in changing mine after a few accidents

I'll try to get some pics of the process, as long as i doesn't break my concentration in the disassembling/assembling proces...
Have you read the service-manual? There's a lot of screws i gotta keep track of...
Actually, the screen is the only part that's really broken, and needs replacing. But i figured that while i'm at opening up this sucker, i might as well get the other housing in the same go to get myself a really unique phone . I also ordered the sliding mechanism, because after a few drops before the fatal one, the mechanism has become a bit too loose; it doesn't seem to hold the screen-half and keyboard-half together that tight anymore...
The package should arrive by the end of this week....and i'll be sooooooo happy if i can ditch that Trinity backup once again... (after i verify that all hardware works ok again, i'll flash it with WM6.1 too)
I liked the look of the silver version .. HERE

It doesn't say what the material is i.e. Steel / Plastic ?
I like the idea of a 'brushed stainless steel' look, but only if it's really brushed stainless steel
Perhaps the steel would impair the GPS and GSM performance though
The service manual for the Kaiser is Link removed - no longer valid
There's a particularly good breakdown photo-story of the Kaiser HERE
Let me know how you got on.
If I was to get the silver one, Id rather it have HTC on it like it used to, Im proud the fact that I own a HTC lol, also it doesnt even have GPS embedded into the rubber, kinda lame.
Package arrived today!!! Wooot!
But alas; the slide-mechanism wan't included (or robbed from the non-sealed box)...
Gotta wait some more....
(But the orange housing looks coooooooooool!! and the good news is that the keyboard is included in the housing!!)
Ooooh what does the keyboard look like. We need pictures I really want that orange case.
it would be nice to have some pics to see the completed transformation... have anyone finished it yet?
i happen to have the orange housing on my tilt. ill post up pictures when im back home. the quality is cmparible to oem but its not oem. ill get into details later

According to the website it IS OEM... Although there ain't no branding from HTC... They claim that needs a sticker or something.
You can read all that here ...see specifically points 4 and 7.
And i can't wait for that sliding mechanism (i'll keep it as a spare part for when it's more urgent), so i'll get unscrewing in a few moments
I was just looking at that the other day. The orange case is definitely cool and different looking. I am a silver freak so Id definitely go with the silver, I just pray I dont have to.
Good luck and post some pics.
Any pics yet?
anything yet lol?
Sorry I like the sleek design of the OEM covers, black and silver. Those were my alma mater's [high school] colors so I learned to love them!
I personally think the orange is cool looking but it would draw unecessary attention to my phone, i.e [theft]. The silver is okay! But with silver buttons, that's just t0o much silver for me!
Has anyone found anything through skinit.com?
I sooooooo totally forgot about this thread while 'enjoying' my 'new-look' Kaiser... and ofcourse i'm too busy with @&%# WM6.1 hickups...
But finaly here they are; the pics from my shiny orange TyTN II
Btw; the doctor's gotta operate again, cause the slider needs replacing (they forgot to pack it in the first shipment)...
it looks damn nice! love it
I love it

Possible to paint the battery cover like the touch pro?

Is it possible to paint the battery cover using the method described here:

I want to change the battery cover from the gold, on my white G1, to white.

Pretty sweet if ya ask me, I think Ill be doing the orange/yellow this sunday. My back case is messed up anyways so Ill scrub it down and give it a shot.
that picture is the reason I wanted to try it. Let me know how it goes when you do it. I would do it to my G1, but I'm trying to sell this one in order to get a new one
any updates?
Seriously I want to see what the g1 looks like painted. Back in my Nextel hacking days, I use to paint my devices, I always did a pearl with a few clear coats. I have never tried a "flat" color, it looks good though. Someone paint your phone.
Taping off the cam window woulnd't be too hard, but i'd want to keep the "with google" and keeping the speaker holes open would be a pain.. Maybe stick 9 toothpicks through from the inside?... Someone try it damnit. Haha
According to the thread at ppcgeeks, they didn't even need to take off the camera window.
ill be doing this today most likely...if not, tomorrow for sure . ..
im trying to find my extra backing...

Dude TAPE not "take". There is no possible way to not tape off the camera window and not paint over it rendering it un-usable...

I don't think you can paint the front casing, since it's not as rough/grippy as the back cover.

....If you read the thread, the person didn't do anything to the camera window. They neither taped it off, nor took it off. Since it's really smooth, the dye has nothing to stick on.

True. I want to do this but i think it would look kind of weird to have a two tone like that..
I wanted to paint my battery cover white, but I'm not sure if walmart has white dye.
im still trying to find the white back i have...got a blue dye.....
i dont think you can do dye black backs...its already the darkest color possible..unless im wrong..but thats why i realized i cant use the black back i have now.
Oooops didn't read it, assumed it was paint. I apologize.
No updates?
Anybody attempt this? Or going to soon?

P.s. i ran outta memory on my camera cuz it uses CD's so i only did a tear down no assembly
Wow you are brave I would not ever dare to take apart my phone, knowing myself I would end up ripping of the display ribbon or somehow making it catch on fire LOL.
Either way thanks for the video, it was fun looking at the insides of my phone
You are brave man indeed Anyway, nicely done m8
Where do we get the springs?
Highly appreciate the try and your braveness, however I would never be able to do this based on your video, is almost impossible to exactly know what are you doing.
Thanks a lot for the effort though
Appreciate the video - I could never do that to mine.
I got vertigos watching it though

Suggestion: next time maybe put the camera on a Tri-pod and keep what you are doing to the phone in the view of the camera the whole time and also post the reassembly. If these two things get done for your next video I would be more than willing to donate.
Great first shot though, keep up the good work.

Great job man, no offense but the video sucked only because it didn't show us what you were exactly doing. If you could get a new camera and stick it on a tripod then it'd be perfect. Thanks anyway dude.
alright guys as you wish i just bought a tri pod just for you guys
the new video will be out soon
Not if I beat you to it.
I just took the phone apart and put it back together with out nay problems. Thank you OP for the warnings. No loose screw no scratches just like brand new.
I also took measurements of the spring if any one wants to buy a different spring to replace the stock one.
The Length of the spring is 10mm
the outer diameter is 4mm
I think I found a good one to replace with.
I am not sure what is the tension of the stock one.

after i figured out wtf i was doing wrong re assembling was a breeze and btw i couldn't reassemble because i ran out of camera memory cuz my camera can only record to 30 minute DVD discs
Edit: apparently the $1 tripod broke on me xD lol so dont expect a redo of the vid anytime soon
Please donate so i can buy a new camera and a better tripod xD

Post the link of the spring you plan on using please.
When is part 3 coming out?
thanks for the info.
if
The Length of the spring is 10mm
the outer diameter is 4mm
then strongest one may be
http://www11.ocn.ne.jp/~sotec/product/compression/syosai/CS0600400100.html
(use chrome to translate)
if the free length and outer diameter are fixed, the wider wire diameter, the stronger. and this one is widest diameter for 10mm/4mm.
or maybe Spring-2241?

[HARDWARE MOD] black ring around the phone (i5801)

BTW MODS! I REALLY DIDNT KNOW WHERE TO POST THIS THREAD! ITS A MOD SO A PUT IT IN THE DEV SECTION....PLS MOVE IT IF ITS WRONG! TKS!
well guys....i was really bored...and the black marks (because of repeated dropping ) that were on the silver ring around my phone were irritating....
i read in some sgs thread that the silver could be sanded off to reveal a nice chrome ring....but ours was black....anyway i thought it would still look cool so i tried it!
tools needed- sand paper.(for perfection a rough one and a fine one)
all u have to do is sand the outer ring of the phone till the silver colour goes....
take out the back cover to avoid unwanted scratches. just try a corner to get the feel of it. if u have 2 sand paper like i suggested, use the rough one for this. some pics of me doing it halfway-

after u sand a part,it will look a bit white and dusty...just wipe it with a wet cloth and it will look nice and black.may take a bit of time..... dont worry...there is nothing after the black part so dont worry about over-sanding it..... after ur done, if u have a finer sand paper(or just use the same one) give it a lite sanding all over to remove any deep scratches and even it out.(btw i did it with only one kind of sand paperr...still came out perfect!)
finished!-
very easy....hard to screw up!
also in the end i used normal shoe polish and shined it......now its amazingly smooth like it came from the factory! and looks hot!
center button also has same plastic...maybe could do the same for it too?
btw havent tried this on i5800 (galaxy 3 with hard buttons) i think the ring is already black.
HIT THANKS IF I HELPED!
