I've searched for a long time in the forum and in Internet but I was not able to find how to access a shared folder on my :shock: LAN. It seems I have to use pass-through connections but I'm not able to make it work. Every time I use pocket file explorer to open a shared folder (writing the complete UNC) I receive the message "the network path was not found" and then "network resource cannot be found .....".
My LAN is a 192.168.1.X network and I've seen that IP assigned to the PPC is 192.168.55.101

I've truid both pocket lan and vxUtil with no results. I can't ping the laptop. I think I could never ping it if the network segment of PPC and laptop are different. Laptop ip now is 10.0.0.8 and PPC always 192.168.55.101. Perhaps I should enabled a proxy on the PPC to route the ping.

do you have a personal firewall installed on laptop? try to disable and check
I have no firewall installed or active.
I was successfull in accessing the LAN using the software "pocket LAN CE", but this is obvious thus it installs a server software that stays resident in the tray bar of the deskop PC.
There must be a solution to access the LAN using only active sync!
As far as I know that's not possible without a LAN card.
The passthrough which is available via activesync works only for internet connections.
I might be wrong. Keep looking. Have done it for a long time an gave it up.

I have installed bluetoothGPS.zip file (found in this forum) and then I installed the Bluesoleil Bluetooth Software for the PC (evaluation version). I could get an IP for the PPC and see the LAN but Internet wasn't working. Anyway having the two Bluetooth Stacks at the same time on the PPC is not a good alternative...
So please:
-MS give us some more Bluetooth Profiles, cm on, you can doit!
- Tobias and Pocket Bluetooth Tools: Please finish the LAN profile, I already donated you :wink:

Make sure that a "guest" account is enable on your server, and try protocals other than tcp/ip. Ipx/Spx is fair. I suppose I should ask first if the activesinc laptop is able to browse the target folder? If it can, then try mapping the share as a network drive on the laptop, and see if you can nav to it using activesinc??? I'm a newbie, and don't even have my MDA I yet (in about 2 hours, I will). I will definantly be trying lots of unorthodox crap, so I'll let you know if I get it to work! Good luck.
I'm rather surprised not to have seen third party support step up to fill in Activesync's worthless inability to sync over wifi or wlan. It would be very nice to revive this forgotten feature. Don't you people remember the uproar it caused when MS removed it?
Anyhow, I'm almost certain there's a work-around. Has anyone seen or heard anything in development?
Why revive this feature?
1. For the sheer convenience of not having to go through exchange servers or third party services especially when they may not be available to you
2. To sync user specific software that's otherwise not syncable OTA
3. Greater freedom share files over a wlan/wifi connection especially with these new and faster broadband networks (ev-do, etc)
4. Not to have to make special trips to your workstation just to sync..
I've found a workaround - sorry it's in German - here:

But it seems that since ActiveSync 4.5 you need to configure a DOMAIN on the pocketPC, not only login and password.
Does anybody know how to set something like a "pseudo domain" or if the PC has a "default domain", if no domain is set?
I will try to translate the workaround now:
In earlier versions of ActiveSync WLAN Sync was possible (last known version 3.8), since version 4.x it was removed..
You can do a remote WLAN Sync as followed:
Start ActiveSync on the PocketPC. Go to Options > Server OR Configure Server [depends on your ActiveSync Version]
Enter the IP of the Windows PC. [if you don't know do: Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig /all ]
Enter Login and Password which are the same as on your Windows PC. [SSL I think should be deactivated]
IN v4.5 YOU HAVE A PROBLEM HERE: if you don't enter a DOMAIN, the configuration wizard doesn't continue IF YOU HAVE LOWER VERSION PLEASE TELL WHETHER YOU HAVE TO SPECIFY A DOMAIN
Click Next > Next > Finished.
Now you can MAYBE [see the DOMAIN problem] sync via WLAN again..
If anyone has an idea how to workaround the MUST-SPECIFY-A-DOMAIN problem please tell, I think I am not the only one who wants WLAN Sync back!
I think you need an exchange server for sync over wifi or gprs.

YES: Microsoft WANTS that you use an Exchange Server, therefore they have removed support for syncing via WLAN since v4.x
NO: The posted workaround doesn't need an Exchange Server running!! Instead you are "simulating" that you have one. Earlier this Workaround seem to have worked, but since ActiveSync v4.5 it seems you NEED to specify a DOMAIN of your PC.. maybe just another hurd only!
So, the problem again: since you need to specify a DOMAIN of your PC now, is there a possibility to workaround this? Maybe via Registry or setting up a "Pseudo Domain" ? This MUST-HAVE-SPECIFIED-A-DOMAIN seems now to be the only problem, unfortunately you cannot leave the domain field empty.. but the Handheld tries to connect the PC via WLAN (...WOW! Just one step away from the Solution!!?...), but that fails due the DOMAIN problem.. (most PC are only in a workgroup, and not in a domain..)
Maybe we are only one step away from a working solution!
I think only the wizard is changed by MS so that when no
domain is entered you cannot go forward.
ActiveSync can be configured with Configuration Service Provider (CSP)
through XML file.

Thx. I launched your tool and entered IP + Login + Pass, activated e.g. Tasks to synchronize, and deactivated SSL, and clicked Save.
Then I launched ActiveSync on the PPC (Trinity HTC P3600).. now there comes a screen:
Microsoft Exchange:
Result: Your account information could not be detected. Choose configure Server on the ActiveSync menu to check your Exchange Server credentials.

If I enter a domain it tries longer to sync on the PPC - instead throwing at once the message above - the circling arrows animates for 3 seconds, then it ends ups with:
Waiting for network..
Hm, maybe the ActiveSync software on the PPC checks for the domain entry But.. maybe this check can be removed
Where is the configuration saved? To a file (which one) or to registry (which branch)?
I do not know where the config is saved. In WM2003 it was in the registry
but in WM5 that was removed and stored in some internal database

And entering this Pseudo Domain as Domain in the ActiveSync Setup..
But what to enter in the Registry? The branch is currently empty, so no example exists

that has nothing to do with domain name.
ActiveSync uses HTTP oder HTTPS (TCP/IP port 80 or 443) when
you configure a server in ActiveSync.
ActiveSync on your deskstop PC does not listen on this TCP ports
so you cannot connect.

Yes this is the only way I have done it so far.
But may be there is another solution out there to do this
with Outlook on your desktop but I currently do not know
how that can work.
I will do some tests today and let you know about the results.

hello all,
gots me a problem . im going to japan november, want to remote desktop back to here when necessary and be able to access a hdd here for dumping pictures. i have a lan here, wifi, it has a connection surfs the net etc.
it has an ip address from my router. is there a program or command that will get me the kind of command functionality of a dos/command prompt? ping, ipconfig, etc?
then if i can get them to talk, what steps do i need to take to remote in. do i need software? i enabled remote here, setup a user (vista BTW).
i cant access here from the laptop with xp either that one can ping. its also wifi currently. im obviously missing something and would appreciate any help, or web site links etc to show me what ive missed.

so this was for PDA, and this is for full connection via SSH VPN encrypted connection. I work for Infineon/Qimonda company, and there is strict security policy in here. So we have not permitted to ping, or created FTP connection with outside and many other services (like sending files through ICQ and etc.). There is one way, use your own SSH tunell ;-) on my home PC I have installed WinSSHD Bitvise server liseninng on port 443 (which cannot be blocked, because all our lotus notes databases is secured with HTPPS) and from work I can connect easily to home. Then is easy to create FTP connection, or terminal, or full GUI terminal (mstsc.exe e.g.) Link to this server (not free) and also to very good client (free) is HERE
I also have few routers connected to stable IP´s adress, which also have VPN features. Then is easy for me to connect to my home lan from everywhere.

WM6 Pro includes both a PPTP & a L2TP/IPSec VPN client. This will work with most VPN routers & firewalls, however they may not be configured to support it. If you can connect using Windows 2000/XP's built-in PPTP or L2TP/IPSec VPN Client then you can almost certainly connect with WM6's.
A lot if VPN Routers & Firewalls are supplied with a 'free' Windows client that has the documentation geared around it. However most (if not all?) of these products will work with the native VPN client in Windows 2000+ (and WM5/6). I would try and stick with the L2TP/IPSec client but this requires some additional steps over setting up PPTP - on both the client & server (router). It is worth the extra steps in my opinion though.

Thank you for your reply, but this articles are about "Remote desktop" - like solutions for WM - based devises. Not for connecting to VPN.
Did anybody have had any success so far?

But. Once again: the article talks about REMOTE CONTROL with the use of things like: RAdmin, MS RDP, etc.
This sofware - are remote desktops, so called VNC, not VPN clients in a classic way.
There is a little mess we get at the moment. (I've defenetelly got)
Let me describe in detail:
People need VPN here for many reasons, for me it is:
- to connect to some VPN through WIFI with our WM5 \ 6 device.
In my case- this is a public WIFI internet provider, which has a wifi coverage in the city.
Wifi is open PPTP. I need to type in a login \ pass on the web page I get, to start using the internet in current wifi session.
The ALTERNATIVE way to conect to internet - is to establish a VPN connection over the wifi.
I can successfully do in on the laptop.
With my UNI, WM5, AKU 3.5 - I can connect to VPN with the built-in VPN Client, but the first request to internet (via browser or Messaging send-receive) - drops my VPN connection, as it described here in the forum.
So: we need some software that can work.
I tried so far:
1. BlueFire VPN - just can't connect.
2. Antha VPN - just doesn't work.
I have heard thah on some other ROMs there is no problem with the built-in VPN client for PPTP, will try with some other WM6 ROMs later.
Any solution so far?

I have the same Problem. I search for an VPN tool. I have wm6. I know ther ist an VPN client but it doesn't work. To connect to the VPN in my University I need the L2TP/IPSec "safety andcertificate" but I don't kwon where I can load this.

Hi! The L2TP/IPSec is a special story.
It is widely discussed here at forum: xda-developers > General discussion > Networking >
Search for *VPN* string on this forum.

You need to obtain the certificate from the system administrators of your network. You may also have some "magic" URL in your campus network, where you can download the required certificate. This URL should point to the inranet web page of the web interface of the VPN server.
If your goal is to securely connect to some specific computer on the network, you should use one of the VNC programs: the VNC server part on the computer, and the VNC client on your device.
In any case - first check your certificate \ settings on, say, Windows XP laptop, connected through WIFI, first, then continue with the device.

VPN problems
I don't know if this issue is specific to my device (pharos gps 600 gps phone), or to windows mobile 6 which I'm running.
I can't connect to my vpn through wifi, the reason being is that I cannot associate any connections through the wifi card with the vpn info.
Wifi card doesn't show as a selectable modem in the modem tab next to the vpn tab in the vpn config. Only modems are cellular line modems, bluetooth, and one "hayes compatible com1" which is my usb I would guess.
Does anybody know how I might get around this?

I'm using a xperia X1 with the latest firmware version installed which SE released.
I also use spb mobileshell 3.0 ; active sync via exchange(over SSL, not VPN); palringo; Xperiatweak; TaskFacade; G-Alarm; Skype;WM6 Remote Desktop;.net vnc viewer;
My provider is o2 and I live in germany.
I'd like to use a pptp vpn connection to get connection to several services in my network. I already used it with my xda-mini-s and my orbit2, never had serious problems. Sometimes it took a few soft-resets until i got it working... but now...
I set up my connection as I always did,
@preferences->connections->add vpn-server ;
after adding the server i specified a couple of exeptions for my network-> reboot. -done-
But this time it won't connect automatically, it doesn't react when i type in a ip/name which is defined in the exeptions. (usually it is attempting to connect to my vpn server...)
I can navigate to the preferences->connections-> edit vpn-server and connect manually. It establishes a connection successfully and i can use e.g. rdp.
PLEASE HELP!
I can't figure out why its not connecting automatically.
I entered the exeptions like I always did.
(e.g. 192.168.14.200 or domaincontroller.domain.local -> a wildcard is added automatically to the entrys -> listed like this: 192.168.14.200/*)

found out something new

Today I found out something new. IT DOES AUTOMATICALLY CONNECT, FOR SOME PROGRAMS...
It's just a question which Software I use.
For example, I always used rdp over vpn.
So I tested if its opening the tunnel if i try to connect to one of my desktops via remotedesktop, and its not.
(on the "old" phone, rdp was included from stock, on xperia i had to install it)
I tested connecting over a java irc app, which is also not working.
If I use e.g. Opera to connect to a website (e.g. owa) over a local ip, its successfully establishing the connection and i could log in.
DAMN!
I need it to work with, rdp, vnc and irc!
Shouldn't the phone recognize that I try to connect to a url/ip wich is located in my LAN whatever wich software is used?

I used to use a vpn for activesync, and activesync always automatically invoked the vpn connection...so I took that for granted...but today I've been using the WM6 Remote Desktop client, and like you, I can't believe that the recognition of url "exceptions" is useless for this app.
BTW, I would have been happy if I could just create a convenient shortcut to start the connection manually, but I've been all up and down the Web, and apparently there's no way to do that, either. mad, indeed.
