GPRS always on - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hello everybody,
i just replaced my old MDA 2 with a MDA COMPACT.
I noticed that close to signal level the GPRS icon (squared G) is always on, while in the MDA 2 it was on for only a few seconds after switching on radio (telephone function) and then disappeaed.
Is this normal? I do not use often GPRS function and i was told GPRS makes battery go down faster...
How can i switch GPRS function off in MDA compact?
Thanks in advance

It just shows that you are in a GPRS capable zone, the icon will change when you actually connect GPRS like when you connect the MDA compact to the computer. You can disconnect from GPRS by holding the hang up button for 3 seconds.

thanks for your quick reply.
I assume then, that the G signal icon was used in a different way by MDA 2 because i never saw it (same provider Voda ita) except when switching on the phone.
I shouldn't been worried then about battery life?
thanks

nah nothing to worry about, its just an indication that you are in a GPRS zone, from memory the XdaIIs shows this icon when you click on the signal strength icon, i think HTC moved it from the signal strength window because the screen on the xda ii mini is not as big and cannot fit as much information as the IIs can.

Does the XDA2 work on the Orange (UK) network?

Guys - I'm trying to get hold of an XDA2 and put it on the Orange network in the UK. The main reason for this is that you can have 2 numbers connecting to the same phone on the orange network (a.k.a. business and personal). But I also like the idea of HSCSD - i.e. 28.8K data speed - faster than any of the others.
If anyone has done this and has any comments they would like to share that I will be a happy man.
regards,
i may be way off here but i dont see what the problem should be
a gsm phone should work with any gsm operator
i bougth my xda unlocked and without a phone company licence
i put in my sim and typed in the pin
i put in the grps settings myself
and it were all set
so as far as i see any unlocked xda should work
Hi,
I'm currently using an unlocked MDA2 on orange. No problems so far, phone works, gprs works. You mention HSCSD. This is not possible with the MDA2 - it is GPRS only. Or are you talking of carrying two devices, one for GPRS and one for HSCSD ? ;-)
Cheers,
Oliver
(Oliver - ) if you are using it GPRS with Orange then you would no doubt be able to have the 2 number service they offer.
As for HSCSD, this is a faster version of GPRS - see http://support.fujitsu-siemens.de/KnowHow/GB/Grundlagen/Funknetz/GPRS/GPRS-im_Vergleich.htm
The important figure is the realistic data rate in practical usage, and HSCSD appears to be 2-3 times faster. This means your bill will go up 2-3 times faster. But that's not the point is it?
Anyways, cheers d.

New O2 Xda II mini ROM - GPRS disconnect button has gone

Hi,
I've just upgraded my O2 Xda II mini to the latest ROM (1.11) and found a problem.
Previously, I could end a GPRS session by tapping on the icon at the top and then clicking on the "Disconnect" button in the dialog bubble.
On the latest ROM, the "Disconnect" button has gone from the dialog bubble. It's simply not there any more.
I called the O2 Helpdesk and they have not had any other reports of this, and simply told me to hold the red "end call" button. While this works, it also backs me out of application I have open and active, which is a nuisance.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Yes you are right my MDA Compact came with the latest rom from factory and I was wondering why there is no disconnect button...? now I can see that it's common problem in 1.11 made by some mistake or something.
I guess they remove it because of the "GPRS connection problem" as I used to have problem on GPRS re-connection (after disconnected), however, after upgrade to 1.11, the problem no longer exist !
Thanks for your responses, Shamus and waiting4u.
I posted a message on the Mtek forum in Australia and one user there has the latest ROM and does not have this problem. Maybe it only happens to upgraded minis as opposed to new ones that came with 1.11?
Would really like this back. O2 support was no help and didn't even know it was a problem.
But this is obvious stupidy always on GPRS connection drains battery as a charm, I omitted the problem by installing SPB Gprs Monitor but disconnect shoud be implemented in system. M$ stupidy is enormous
PeterW mine MDA came with 1.11 it wasn't upgraded!!!

Hi Shamus,
In that case, it must be a stupid Microsoft oversight. I checked my colleague's Xda mini this morning - he is still running 1.03 ROM, and he does have the disconnect button. Very frustrating.
this little fine proggy finally makes me happy

Thanks Shamus! Will give it a try.

EDGE/GPRS Icon

Hi there...
Does anybody here knows why in a new version of HTC devices, the GPRS icon comes out upleft of the provider icon and in the I-mate K-jam doesn´t? How do you guys knows you are connected in a real data transmission? I´ve seen from a friend of mine that even getting an icon right beside the provider signal it still get another one for Wifi connection or something!
My K-jam just have only the default icon for connection not the upleft one like HTC devices!
Any idea folks?
Thanks in advance!
Eduardo

Which is what?

Guys,
I had the t-mobile rom when I first got the Vario 2 and in the roaming box (to the left of the reception bars in the task bar) it use to display 3G.
But I've since upgraded to the latest Qtek Rom: 1.35.255.2 11/14/06 and now it always displays just the letter U.
I'm using a t-mobile sim card by the way. Not that I use the internet or even the wifi for that matter but would just be nice to know what is what.
Thanks in advance for any help you lot can provide.
PS: pof, I'll try doing it directly from the main site tomorrow

That depends where you live. In most countries Wifi is disabled and cannot be enabled just by changing the software (there is no hardware to enable). Only in a few countries (i.e. the Netherlands) Wifi is enabled and fully functional.

Hi l took a look at your picture link ,the aerial is a sheet of metal which can be fiited on, if thats all thats missing to get wifi - it only strenghtens the rx/tx quality of the incoming and outgoing signal (using a link to main board via soldering)
most articles i have read have been adament that it is an onboard chip that is missing if i get a more info i keep you posted
Hi,
I have got a t-mobile compact III from the UK,
is there any way of finding out if the wifi chip is missing or just the antenna is missing or nothing is missing?
Hey!
I got a german MDA Compact III, CID Unlocked and german O2 Windows Mobile 6 ROM installed and running flawlessly.... There is NO WiFi enabled, so i guess its a little more missing than just the antenna. I'd say the whole chip simply isn't there, (or deactivated) if it was, i at least would have the option of switching WiFi on.
If you want WiFi, better exchange your device
for an orbit
orbit is supposed to be more sleek as well, not a bad thought.
