Hi, I've got an Xda IIs and i'm thinking about introducing acouple into my workplace, but i was wondering if it is possible to sync them with the exchange server here..
What i'd be wanting to do, is to log in either via gprs or a wi-fi hotspot, connect thru a vpn connection to our local network, and be able to change diary entries, access email, etc. on our exchange server.
Has anyone been able to do this?
How is it done?
Works beautifully for mail, diary, and contacts.
Connect your XDA to your desktop then got to activesync.
Options
Check "Enable Sync with server"
"Configure"
Setup synced data as required
then click "connection" fill out all fields.
Remember that if you are using ssl you will need to install the appropriate certificate on each XDA.

Just wondering now, I suppose I have to run activesync on a non-NAT IP computer - ie one of our servers, yes? (for a/s via GPRS to work)
so... how does that work? forgive my newbieness... I've only ever a/s'ed via my usb cradle....
no, when you do server syncing, the exchange server 2003! speaks OMA (outlook mobile sync) an http connection to your mda/xda.
cool - thanks. One last thing - the calender that will be syncing is NOT the user's calendar, but a public calendar. can A/S sync this instead of the user's calendar?
EDIT: and we use exchange 5.5 - does outlook mobile sync work with that?
just wondering if anyone has had any luck with this.. it has been about 4 months... thought there might have been some new software that would do it...

With activesync it seems to have an option box to sync to the server or from the server. Is it possible to do both ways? Or get something that will change the direction...i.e if the xda is in the cradle it syncs from the server if not it will sync to the server?

For exchange server, it sync both ways. If you got update from ur PDA it will update ur exchange server, and if ur exchange server is more updated it will update ur pda.
The settings are for those cases where the same contact has changed on both server and pda since last sync.

you cannot sync with your outlook and with an exchange server at the same time. Although active sync proxies the server sync through the cradle/activesync to the server. This way you can connect with the same profile on the road via GPRS as you can on your desk.
The exchange server sync only applies to contacts, agenda and email. the rest can only be synced through activesync.

Hi all,
my device (iMate Jasjar 1.13.53 WWE on WM5) syncs without problems through my office-pc with the exchange server standing at the office. This is a wired connection, working through ASync 4.1 (USB).
If I disconnect the USB-Cable, hence force the device to sync through another connection, it will try my GPRS-settings. The GPRS-settings work normal for Internet and eMail. After some time of trying I get the error 0x80072EE2 "The server could not be reached. This can be caused by temperary network conditions"
The server is working normal though.
Does anybody have some advice for a newbie (absolute no network specialist). My exchange server administrator is new to this as well. So if I would be able to read into this somewhere, or get some insider tips it would be very helpful and highly appreciated.

how do you have the server name entered in the activesync settings?
are you using ssl?
has it ever syncronized w/o having it connected to pc?
does the exchange server have a public IP address?

my server is at : mail.al????.ru
I was told to sync like :
Server address : mail
This server requires en encrypted (SSL) connection : NO
User name : the one I am allowed with to enter our network
Password : my usual password to enter our network
Domain : al????.ru
Save Password : YES
If there is a conflict : Keep items on my device
Event logging : Brief
With these settings like this, I was able to sync with the exchange server while connected through USB. ASync was getting a special allowence and the Microsoft Firewall Client was disable for it.
It has never been syncing wireless in any way, only USB, in the office.
I presume we have a public IP address, but I should counter ask my administrator about this.
If You have any ideas after reading this data, please shoot ;-)

yeah. it depends. if it is synching through USB, for me it is hard to tell if you are synching directly to the exchange server or to the workstation. if you have a mail profile setup on your machine and you are synching with activesync. on your desktop with activesync does it specifically show that it is synching with your exchange server? actually better yet if you run activesync the screen will tell you the last syncronizations. you will have an "Exchange Server" section and the last time it synched and probably a "Windows PC" section.
If your Exchange Server section has a synchronized time then your settings are correct. (The time should also be the same as your Windows PC time)
If it has something like Never synchronized or something other than a successful synchronization time, then those settings may not be correct or something is not right on the exchange server or network.
So if you do have a successful timestamp for the "Exchange Server" field, then everything on your device is good. The problem may be that either the exchange server does not have a public ip or a dns issue. (you can try to resolve the latter by putting in the IP of the server instead of the dns name in the server field for AS)
If it still doesn't work then it could be a firewall issue in front of where the exchange server sits.

I actually am syncing with 3 different things. My Home-PC, my Office-PC and also the Exchange Server at the office. I get all synced and a correct time stamp with all, this works.
f.e. My contacts are synced with both Home-PC and Exchange Server (not the Office-PC anymore as this is not possible)
So I understand that the settings in my PDA are then correct and I should be searching for the problem in Server, Firewall, IP / DNS Settings.
I will try this idea of putting the IP though (as soon as I will get it tomorrow)

Update :
I inserted the fixed-IP our Exchange Server has into the address field and with this input the server did not even want to sync whilst I have a USB-ASync connection.
Question for my understanding :
Is the following a technical possible setup ?
-At home I connect through USB giving me access to my Home-PC and the internet. The PDA will sync with the home-PC and the exchange server which he will find through the internet.
-At home I connect through WiFi giving me access to the internet. The PDA will sync with the exchange server which he will find through the internet.
-At the office I connect through USB giving me access to my Office-PC and the exchange server. The PDA will sync with the Office-PC and the exchange server which he will find through the office network.
-On the road I connect with a GPRS- (or eventually UMTS-) connection which will give me access to the internet. The PDA will sync only with the exchange server which he will find through the GPRS-connection.

I am sure the problem is, that you cannot sync over the public Adress with the Exchange Server, because there is only Port 25 for SMTP from the internet to the server, and this port is not for Outlook Connection and these things
No company ever had a Exchange all-open on the internet! try to sync within your local network and the internal-name of the server!
Well syncing within the Network works. If I connect with USB to the office-pc I can sync to both office-pc as well as exchange server.
Do I understand correctly that I can forget (not realistic) to sync wirelessly (GPRS, UMTS) while on the road ?
I just hoped that this way I could receive contacts / calender items from my secreatary on the road.

The Exchange Server is open on your local network, thats why you can sync. But from the internet, there ist only mail access (and maybe a few other ports that the admins opened) to the exchange.
Talk to your admins, and ask if it's possible to connect with a VPN to your office. Over these VPN Connection you can sync with your exchange.

Yes to all of the above.
The vpn solution should work too if your environment supports PPTP connections. Most don't and only allow IPSec or L2TP connections which is a whole other mess to get to work on handheld devices.
As to the ports. It a little different for synching with Exchange. It only requires HTTP (80) or HTTPS (443).
If you can use Outlook Web Access then you can sync over the air with your phone. (Assuming that all the Mobile Sync settings are correctly set up on the Exchange server) Which in your case sounds like it is.
Outlook is officialy not supportet at mail2web live i think, but is there a way to use your desktop outlook with the free service?
currently i sync my Wizard with my Outlook and the Exchange Service, so i have all things synced between outlook and exchange indirectly, but a direct sync would be better.
Yeah, I've tried messing about with Outlook to get it to connect to the exchange server, but no luck so far. If anybody knows a way, then please post it here!
I think the only way to "hack" the service for desktop outlook would be a OMA Plugin for outlook, to sync with the Server ActiveSync.

If you think it have such a tool you misunderstood.
There are only 2 open doors to mail2web: OWA (Outlook Web Access) and OMA (Outlook Mobile Access). We can forget OWA. OMA is for syncing PocketPCs (ActiveSync Server). So we need a plugin or tool for the desktop outlook, that make it syncing over OMA!
Is there any development in this area. I was looking to sync my web2mail with my Desktop outlook.? Is it possible at all?

I am presently using mail2web live very successfully.
I have my comcast email forwarded to the mail2web email address and leave the messages on my comcast server to download later to outlook.
I put the mail2web server source settings into Active Sync. It somehow syncs these server settings to the pda and with my unlimited monthly cingular data plan, I get ALL of my email OTA downloaded to my PDAphone immediately as it arrives to comcast.

Yeah, that is possible. I am getting my gmail OTA, which I have forwarded to mail2web. My question was about syncing mail2web with desktop outlook, not mobile outlook. The idea is, then I dont have to sync with PC using USB cable at all. I sync with mail2web OTA, and when I log on to outlook on my PC it will sync with mail2web. So, I dont need a physical connection between PC and handheld. :lol:
This works if you pay $1.99 to mail2web.
However I too would like a free version.

getting ADSL with a static IP address / web address and using the OWA MS 2003 server settings, setting my PC as a server, so I can use the MSFP to directly sync in with my home PC ( I think you need XP Pro to do this though, not XP Home).
This will also allow me to VPN in and take anything from home out and about.
I should also be able to do this to e.g. play my music files from my PC on my device. Will let you know how this works.
Unfortunately I am not a software developer, but if any of you need an idea; do what I just said in a one off program that runs on any PC and cradled device - syncs 'em together via GPRS / wi-fi that would be nice.
Just to let you guys know that mail2web now offer a FREE MS Exchange based e-mail account called 'mail2web Live'. As standard you can use it with ActiveSync (...and direct push if you're using WM5).
You also get access to the usual Outlook Web Access (OWA) and Outlook Mobile Access (OMA).
I've been playing around with it for the last few days and I'm well impressed - so much so that I've upgraded to their 'personal exchange' plan - to my mind a bargain for a meagre $1.99 a month. This gets rid of the banner and google ads that do take up the best part of 1/2 of the screen in the free version as well as giving you a gig of space and a few other goodies.

Here's the cheap way of getting picking up emails on outlook and using direct push
Sign up for 2 email accounts, one mail2web account and another email account that uses pop3(or use an existing one).
Set up email forwarding from the pop3 account to mail2web.
Set up your outlook account to leave email on the server.
This way you get the best of both worlds.
Then set activesync to sync to both outlook and mail2web and get the emails from mail2web so thats it uses direct push.
One other thing you could do is to use an advert blocker (like adblock in firefox) this gets rid of the adverts as well.

As hedgehog1982 suggestes this is a pretty good option, especially if you have an e-mail address on your own domain. This does have a couple of drawbacks though...
(i)
When you send (or reply to) an e-mail it will come from the mail2web account and not your POP account. You can get around this by setting up both accounts on your XDA (i.e. ActiveSync for your mail2web account and SMTP to send from your own e-mail address) - however, you'll have to remember to send from the SMTP when you send and don't hit reply.
(ii)
You'll effectively get two coppies of your e-mails (one to mail2web on your XDA and one to your POP inbox) - so if you want to delete an e-mail for example you'll have to do it on both. The beauty of the ActiveSync setup is that both server and XDA sync, so if you delete/move/organise your e-mails/calendar/contacts/tasks on either, the other also updates.
There are companies out there that will give you a single (or more) Exchange account(s) on your own domain but this will cost you more - most start from about a fiver a month.
Any way to sync mail2web with Desktop outlook yet?

Guys how do you set in your PPC "both accounts to send from your own email-address" ? My target is to get mails pushed from my corporate exchange server and to be able to reply also using my corporates email address. But our company doesn't allow any remote access to exchange (except VPN with my notebook and OWA).
The only workaround I found is to have redirect emails from exchange server to f.e. gmail, in gmail you can set an alternative email address you can send from (it will fake my [email protected] and send it "on behalf of xx"). This way I can receive and send my emails from my PDA and it looks quite well. But - with gmail I only can pull and not push.
So using mail2web.com I could push and reading your instruction how to set that SMTP in my PDA, it should also work to reply with my corporates address, but there is no possibility to set this you described...how did you do that?
I think what he means is to setup your exchange account as POP3/IMAP, but never use it to receive, only use it to send.
Example:
1. You have ActiveSync setup with mail2web (push), and you setup gmail to forward to this account based on filtering or direct forward.
2. You setup another account with the same details as your exchange server. Have this account setup so that it never downloads. Depending on your setup, you would need to setup either POP3 or IMAP. I would suggest IMAP.
3. When you want to reply to a message, don't hit reply from your 'Outlook Messages' (that's your push email). You would compose a message and use your corporate email servers outgoing SMTP to send it.
However, since you mentioned that exchange is closed except via VPN, it makes me think that they have also closed all other ports.
It might be possible for you to install a VPN client on your device and sync that way?
Hi everyone. New poster here and love this forum. I've switched over from 8 years of PalmOS and Treo to the Wizard and enjoying it tremendously.
My only problem so far that I haven't been able to find an answer to is with Exchange Server sync on the desktop. I have it working flawlessly over the air via GPRS with Direct Push. However, I have an extensive amount of Notes that I constantly use that I need to sync from desktop, so I connect via USB and it hangs forever trying to synchronize Exchange Server from the USB! How do I stop this and have it only syn with Windows PC? I can get everything else fine from GPRS and don't care to sync on the desktop for Exchange.
I'm using ActiveSync 4.2 on XP for a Cingular 8125 with latest updates. Exchange sync through the desktop fails after 10-15 minutes. I just need to bypass that on the desktop and only sync wirelessly for email, contacts, and calendar. I need only task and notes desktop sync. Does anyone know how to do this? My wireless sync isn't using SSL but SMS notifications which is sufficient for me. My apologies if this has already been answered, but my search was not able to uncover an answer.

I set up my outlook to a exchange and everything work fine. also use exchange through internet
