Photo quality on Jam not so bad! Examples inside - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

I was playing with my Jam earlier and took a few test shots, they are not too bad.
Some claim it's worse than a 7250, which it clearly is not.

the cam aint too bad as i took a pic of my lynx bottle lol but its no where near 1.3mp as the nokia 7610 has a 1mp and its loads loads clearer

i can't even compare JAM 1.3MP to nokia 6230 0.3MP !!!!
nokia pictures are real photos !

It is a 1.3mp camera. The resolution only relates to the size of the picture not the quality. Still wish it's quality was better though!

I dont think it's too bad. I will take some more pictures in daylight, I had some great pics but then had to hard reset (
I think the software is partly to blame for the quality, I just hope its not terrible hardware as that cant be fixed.

From the pictures you provided and my own observations from using the camera, it appears to me that several factors contribute to the poor quality:
* bad light sensitivity
* amplification noise
* washed out colors
* poor focus
The light sensitivity has to do with using a cheap CMOS based camera. The grain and noise that can be seen stems from amplifying the CMOS signal significantly to produce a viewable image. The colors looks like a software problem. Poor focusing comes from using a plastic lens with fixed focus.
Better firmware could sort out the washed out colors, and it might be possible to decrease the amount of noise in the amplificiation process. I believe however that at best the camera will pass as poor.

i find that when the camera is on auto its crap but when on daylight or night mode or grey its fine?

i haf noticed one thing....n i think alll the XDA II or guys usin Himalaya device shud try this toooooo.....wat ive noticed is....i taken out a pic from ma XDA II on default settings wid out changin gamma or contrast or sharpness.....wid pic resolution of 480 (thts the max it has FOOOOOK) ne wayz...i sent the pic to ma frnd via bluetooth on his nokia 6600 n the other frnd on some new siemens set....n guesss wat.....the freaky pic was loookin as if i toook it out from a DIGI CAM......not just on the damn cellll but wen they downloaded from the celll to their pc's too then also the damn pic had a totallllly diffff color n resolution then wat ma XDA II was givin me.....so i am sure there has to be something wid the software tht generates the pic n reproduces it on the lcd....caz after takin a pic out from XDA II n sendin it to frnds cell n burnin it out on the comp it was just awesome wat does tht MEAN ????? SOFTWARE PROB FOR SURE..... wat do u guys say ????

anyone tried the thing i mentioned above ??

not yet we are first trying to understand what you are typing in.
Are you using the same software to type your posts as the one used by XDA to display pictures

jesus woz dat englsh u were usin?
I'm a native and it took me a while. It might save you a few characters typing, but it takes the 100 people trying to read your post twice as long! This will be worse still for those for whom English is not their first language.
Nigel

this is not SMS zaairyab!!

I have noticed one thing, I think all the XDA II or people using Himalaya device should try this too, what I've noticed is, I took out a picture from my XDA II on default settings without changing GAMMA, CONTRAST or SHARPNESS.... with picture resolution of 480x640 (that’s the max xda II has) any ways after taking out the picture I sent the picture to one of my friends via Bluetooth on his NOKIA 6600 and the other friend on some new SIEMENS Cell and guess what ??? the picture was looking totally different as if someone took it out from a DIGI CAM not just on the cell but also when they downloaded it on their computers the resolution and colors (graphics) was totally different then what my XDA II was giving out.
So I am sure there’s something to do with the software that generates the picture while sending it out on the Desktop Pc or LCD of the Handheld’s we are using.
What do you people have to say about this ?
Hope the grammar is OK for you guys to understand now

sorry man! but it does not make sense! when the camera chip receive the light and transfare it into digital data as JPEG or BMP the quality will not change unless you edited the file by using any photo editor.
when you are viewing the pic on other phone "NOKIA" it may look better because you are viewing at smaller scale according to the display size.
no matter if you send the photo to nokia, siemens, then back to your PC or laptop it will not change.
do this test send a photo taken by JAM to nokia phone as you suggested then send it to your PC, the same photo send it again from your JAM to your PC directly and compare both together!
Regards.

Already did that mate, that's why I posted my message here !!
Why don't you try it and see ?? Because I have tried it and did find a difference.

No, the quality of the picture is independent of the device on which you display it. It might be that the Nokia phone has a program that enhances the display of the picture you have taken, but the quality of the picture is purely a function of the camera.
As I have written in another post, there are some software problems with the camera that can be corrected after taking the picture, such as the poor coloring. It is possible that the Nokia has software to adjust this upon viewing the picture.
Here's something to try: take a picture with a decent digital camera, and transfer it to your Magician. It looks about a million times better than the same picture taken with the Magician itself. The built in camera truly stinks...

So is there a possible way that the software can be corrected ?? Or may be someone can create a software which can fix this problem, just like they create a Radio or Ext Rom.
A software which can do something like break the size of the image, I mean make the image small in resolution but can cover that up with the quality of the pic ?

waz up with the blue spot in the center of all images..
when i lowered the hue and gamma, almost grayscale the quality was better with out blu spot, but very poor colors instead.. mmm... the cam sux.. my friends samsung D500 qith 1,3mp is so much better cam.

My experience with the camera has been mixed. It doesn't work at all really in poor light conditions bars, clubs, at night etc but if the light is good, the pics come out quite well. I've put a couple of links below
http://www.geocities.com/captin_random/IMAGE_00014.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/captin_random/IMAGE_00020.jpg
I've also applied the "JAM_Camera_Patch_V1.03.1.0.CAB" patch

My solutions until new enhancement software is relaesed is:
When I sync the magician with my notebooks, I transfered all the images to my notebook.
Then I opened up a photoshop application
Then I opened all transferred image in Photoshop
Then I choose from the menu bar Image>Adjust>Auto Levels and after that Image>Adjust>Auto Contrast
Then Voila....The lighting and the colors improved tons better (However, the noise is only minimized by the photoshop, so you might still see the blue spots)
Then I transferred it back to my XDA mini
There you go, a smart solutions for beginners who wants to have an advance and good quality images from magician.
Hope this helps
(I read this in one of the topics and try it myself, and it works like charm)

Looking to get a universal, some questions here!

I am seriously considering getting a universal to replace my pda (dell axim x51v) and cell phone (moto v551).
I got some questions to clear up before pulling the trigger
1) between the different variants, is there any difference other than software? Which one is supposed to be the best one? the worst one?
2) How does the universal handle video playback using the latest ROM, because according to an early review, the universal performed quite poorly.
3) Any universal user out there who also own(ed) an x51V, how does the universal behave compared to x51v generally?
Thanks a lot.
1) I've only ever used the O2 ROM, as I really like their visual style.
2) I can play XviD 640x360 (16:9) and 640x480 (4:3) both fullscreen with no resizing and they only stutter on lots of fast-changing detail e.g. fire, ripples, heat haze etc. 98% of the time, it's VERY watchable The other 2% last less than 5 seconds roughly on the types of video I watch. WMVs are not really watchable, MPEG1 / 2 are perfect, MPEG4 I don't have much experience with, but the clips I record with the Universal's built-in camera play fine.
3) I've never had another PPC
4) Get the true VGA hack if you get one!
1) i have used the O2 ROM, dopod ROM, Lt. Cmdr. Ivan's AKU3 ROM [beta 8 was the last ROM I used I think it's now on beta 15], JW's AKU3 imate ROM currently using JW's ROM [1.90.96] it's pretty stable and fast.
2) I barely use it for Video, I use it mainly for music. But when I played WMVs [all my WMVs are 320 x 240 as I encoded them all to this resolution when I still had QVGA devices not too forward thinking I know...] it did the job pretty well. Note I usually soft reset before and after watching a movie so that I get the most RAM I can.
3) Sorry never owned a DELL PPC.
Thanks for the input, guys.
Another quick question, how does the universal work as a phone? I know it's a pda phone and I shouldn't expect it to be as good as a regular phone.
But how is the usability of the universal as a phone? Missed calls problem or any other known problems?

My MDA Pro is usable as a phone since I got a bleutooth headset. Before that it wasnt a great phone. It is since I got a Siemens-Benq HHB-130, just love that headset.
Hi, Kassad, is it the bulky factor or the not-so-good sound quality of the internal speaker and mic that stops you from using it without a bluetooth headset? I've got a bluetooth headset, but I am not sure if I want to use it everytime I want to make a phone call or have a call come in.
BTW, how is the picture quality of the 1.3MP camera? How well does it capture video stuff? I will be interested in using it to take some short videos from time to time.
Thanks a lot.
on BT Headsets and Camera Functions
For me call quality is great but the bulk makes it akward to use at times. I wouldn't want to be fumbling with my Uni whilst walking, with a headset you just press the MFB and your talking... of course I get the: "hey did you earse my number???" everytime I ask who's on the line [as I don't see who's calling]. or the oddest thing I've gotten was: "Are you a handicap, a deaf-mute?" [not too many people with headsets here I suppose hahaha. By using a headset your hands are free to do other things as well.

As for the camera I barely use it as it's doesn't have the best of qualities. I wouldn't leave my Digicam if I wanted nice photos or a basic video clip. Maybe for spur of the moments snaps or vids in the morning [with good lighting] the camera is bearable.
--
Anyway apart from the bulk and the poor camera [I don't think theres any PPC with a nice camera, doesn't make it right but I guess it's a fact of life for the meantime] the Uni is a great device

Its the bulky factor, the sound quality is ok. With the headset much better tho.
Quality of the camera is only acceptable in full daylight when you're outside, any other situation, forget the camera.
But as an internet connected very small laptop its superb! I use it as my business device and love it.
I normally will not buy a phone that is 1 year old or more in the market, mobile phone technology moves very fast, you must get the latest!
Why not wait for HTC Omni or some other devices like O2 Flame?
Some will be out early next year.
Camera is ok, its 1.3MP but it has a extrapolated 2MP mode. But cannot beat the 3, 4 or 5 or event more MP digi cameras.
Night pics are ok if you have a stable hand and holding your breathe, the flash light is quite useless.
Video is also ok, in *.mp4 files. Full screen playback can be possible using TCPMP player.
Ringtone or stereo audio from the phone speakers ok. Phone Mic & Phone earpiece ok.
Bluetooth headsets with caller id or caller number type can be used.
Bluetooth stereo headsets can be supported with a registry hack available on this forum if you are not using the qtek rom.
My other PPC is iPAQ as in my signature.

Camera and quality

Hi,
I am pleased about X8 hardware but the camera.
My previous phone is Nokia 6120 Classic with 2.0 mpx camera, it hasn't auto focus as X8 neither but sky and earth.
In the group of non auto-focus cameras the nokia's solution is #1, 5 star performance. Unfortunately SE-s camera hardware could have only 2 stars. The reason of my opinion: slow response time from ccd, that is why your pics become cloudy and (motion)blurry.
Nokia 6120's cam: *****
SE Xperia X8's cam: **
So... anybody has any kind of software solution to make X8's camera a little bit more usable?
A little tip from me:
Camera Pro: you can use your camera without capturing noice. And it has some possibilities to set brightness, contrast and color after shooting.
But it doesn't solve the built in motion blur effect. :[
I need more tipps.
Moved to General
Ah. I had problems with the camera being super-blurry too. But this is easily remedied, just set the camera from 'Auto' to 'Sports'. This will fix this 'motion blur' issue you are having, but doesn't stop the overall quality being crap.
You should know by now that mobile phones don't make very good cameras anyway.
Thank you.
I haven't tought that a simple option will improve the camera.
I have left one question: wich app will shoot silent photoes in sport mode?
Thx.
Putting your phone into silent mode should do it. If not, download an app called "Volume" by 'CoreCode' and turn the system volume all the way down. Not the most ideal solution, but it works. I'm sure there'd be a better option if you rooted (such as replacing the shutter sound file), but I haven't messed around with any of that yet.
Ok. Thanks.

Video clarity is very bad

Hi all,
Just now I tried to make a video with my SGS2, but when it is reaching a closeup range, its quality becoming blurry, and overall quality is very poor. Even I tried to focus on a remote, we cant read the numbers in the remotes with this video. But still image is very perfect. Do anybody face this problems?
Hello, Nobody to reply? Do eveybody haven't problems with Video capturing?
Actually I have the same problem.. Autofocus while in video seems to suck pretty bad, yet in still capture the phone focuses fine. Tried to record flashing a rom on my other phone in a dark room and it refused to focus at all. Don't know why. Even if I shined a light to see if that would help but nope.
(EDIT) I just noticed that autofocus only seems to work in 1080 recording mode and only while you are recording. It does not appear that autofocus works at all in 720, 480, or any other video resolution. I can't find any info on that. Anybody know why? Is this a "feature"?

[Q] Camera Questions

I noticed the ticking sound of the auto focus today while using the camera, just wanted to know if it is supposed to be that loud or if I have a problem?
Also, I'm not a camera expert but I noticed that for any close up pictures, the phone has to be at least a good 2/3 inches away from the object to focus on it properly, otherwise the picture just comes out blurry. Is this normal for every camera?
Well I don't know what you mean with "that loud" but I can also hear mine, so I don't think you have a problem.
I remember my S3 also had problem focussing on close range, guess it's normal. Your eye can't focus on anything closer than 7cm (about 3 inch?) either.

[Q] constant autofocus?

I've not really used my Z2 for video much.
I was at my kids nativity play and tried to do so, but the camera was constantly autofocussing and the footage is unwatchable.
Nobody else with different phones had this issue.
I tried setting it to manual and also played with different focussing modes and it was just the same.
Has anyone else had this issue, is it hardware or software. I have a feeling it may be connected to the facial recognition, but like I say it produced awful footage and part of the reason for buying this phone was the superior camera.
Trying to work out if it is faulty and should be returned.
Thanks

A question - is this a video recording problem only or its the same with photo focusing. And second - try recording a video wothout video stabilisation option enabled / stead shot - off. Metering - Multi / centre. or spot - tap the screen where you want to get a focus. If this does not help - reinstall the firmware - and if this doesn't work aswell give it to repair.
Thanks.
I have only really noticed it on video. There were a lot of kids and i suspect yhe facial focus stuff was getting confused, but i turned off most of the stuff you suggested and it still did it.
I am struggling to reproduce this issue, so whether hardware or software it does appear to be that scenario that sets it off. Will maybe go somewhere busy and try and play.
Have downloaded the basic google camera to see if that does the same.
Thanks
