Will there ever be a Pocket PC Phone with PTT (push to talk) button so it can be used as a radio as well. Some GSM carriers are offering this service to get rid of NEXTEL. I think this phone should be there by now. i found one by Samsung the MITs400 but is for Korea and CDMA not GSM, do you guys know better?
Best,
ALBERTO

I'm not an expert on this, but I suspect you're switching a European phone (O2) to a US Carrier (T-Mobile) so you may be on the wrong band. You may have to switch from 900/1800 MHz service to 1900 MHz.
Don't fret though, very easy to do. The 3.17 ROM on the kitchen has band-switching software available, or if you're running a different ROM, you can use the band selection screen inside the bootloader to change bands. (Do a SOFT reset while holding down the power button, then when the Bootloader comes up, press the Calendar button to get to the RF menu, then use the directional thumb button to scroll down to "GSM 1900", and select it by pressing the center of the directional thumb button. Then do another soft reset.)
Probably a stupid question and sorry if it has been asked before but I ssearched and found nothing. I was wondering if the Cingular PTT will be able to communicate with the PTT of Boost Mobile or it'll just be M2M.

No, Boost works over Nextel's IDEN network, and Cingular PTT over Kodiak network. The two are incompatible.
Figures, I thought maybe after the merge with Sprint, Nextel would change networks. I don't have a problem with the iDEN network but seems it won't be compatible with much of anything in the future.
OK, I have read the specs and the HTC Shift has the ability to connect to the GSM networks. Since I am still waiting for the back orders to arrive (and therefore make my order), I just have to ask. Does the HTC Shift conduct SMS through GSM or the GPRS/EDGE/3G/3.5G systems.
Why ask - I often travel a lot to other contries that ONLY have GSM. the HTC Shift not only lets me replace my current laptop for my travels, but also (if GSM works, either in country or through TELSTRA roaming) lets me SMS my family and use it as a modem through the cellular network. The HTC manual suggests it can do this (set the modem settings from "cellular.GPRS" to just "cellular"), and the setup is exactly like WM6 (funny about that I suppose).
So the question, once posed, is - does the HTC Shift recongnise GSM or only 2.5G up?
My SMS service is set to send over GSM.
Well, that answers the question. With Snapvue cracked open, global roaming on 3G or GSM and the PC power I need for work-on-the-go (I don't really stress the laptop, nor this thing, on the road - the Laptop will still remain "Home Base" in a secure area), I finaly have a replacement for the very old and well loved CASSIOPIA (man I loved that thing - and it was such a pity to loose it to newer OS and software)
The Shift recognizes GSM to send and receive SMS but no phone calls. I have an UMTS data plan but I had to check with my provider because I had the 'call barring' function enabled for outgoing calls so I could not send SMS but only receive them.
I saw an add where the Touch Pro 2 has a conference call app. Is that on the Imagio too?
Nevermind I found my answer.
And that answer was?
CDMA networks can only handle 3 people on a call. GSM can handle 8. The conference program is only on the GSM TP2. Even if you bake it into a CDMA rom. It won't work.
But say if you had a go card from at&t and an unlocked imagio, what say you now?
It's still a CDMA phone/rom so I'm guessing no. I wonder if you use both the CDMA and GSM radios can you talk and surf at the same time?
Well is there a program to conference between 3 people?
Hi,
please allow me to ask this stupid question
according to the spec, it supports GSM network, does it mean I can insert my normal phone SIM card to it and make phone call?
I don't really want to have a data plan and simply just use my normal SIM card (if it's possible), and then use WIFI when access is possible (at home or in the office).
I am very curious if I can make phone call with it, so I don't have to use my current phone anymore
thanks
It would help if you did a bit of research into the product you intend on purchasing, as any review will tell you, the galaxy tab IS a phone.
If you have an EU model, it will support and allow phone calls.
CANADA ones I think you can make calls, but not out of the box.
US models do NOT support phone calls (Skype may work?)
ASIA Models seem to come without marketplace.
risp is partially right in regards to the USA models (T-mobile / AT&T) out of the box these 2 tabs are not able to make phone calls just use 3G, but if you flash a Euro Rom it will allow you to make phone calls, and you can get Edge (only using an AT&T or Simple Mobile Sim) on both AT&T and T-mobile tabs. Since you stated that you will use wifi either at home or office then you can choose either one of the two and just flash the Euro Rom and you will be set to make phone calls.

OK, I just called Rogers (a Canada carrier), it surprises me that the staff told me it cannot make phone calls. The GSM network only supports the data.
when you said flashing a different Rom can make phone calls, does it mean, the Canada or US model doesn't come with that software to make phone calls?
I haven't seen the device myself yet, is there a place I can insert a SIM card to it, and the device and recognize it? If yes, I am sure there is a way to use it.
It IS an do-it-all marvel
It is a one-unit that does-it-all (including voice calls) if you are anywhere but North America.
Here, the service providers are only offering units with the voice call capability locked out. Apparently want us to carry around two units, a tab and a phone like in the iWorld. Hum. Why? Could it be they want to get deeper in our pockets?
I have a regional service provider that that doesn't sell the Tab. But they promised me if I bought one from the UK (Clove Technology) and put their sim card from my old phone in it, they would give me both voice and data service. Very reasonable.
They don't "support" it but the local staff was so excited to get their hands on it and and play that they had me up and functioning in seconds.
I'm very pleased with it and don't see any reason why any provider that offers voice and data service on your current phone wouldn't be willing to let you pay them for the same service on an unlocked, fully functional Tab that you got from wherever.

T-Mobile is filtering voice because they don't want it to be looked at as a big smart phone. They want it to be a real iPad competitor so they are doing everything they can to make people believe it isn't just a big smart phone but rather something new. Of course we know it is just a big smart phone and naturally we want to makes calls on it but T-Mobile isn't having any of that.
Same with the other carriers in the US.

I was hoping I could get the galaxy tab to run 3g and also provide voice on ATT. It sounds like either you can get 3g data only, or edge data and voice if you are using an euro rom. Is it possible to get 3g and voice on Att by using a euro rom and jumping through some hoops?
Hoping I can just retire the iphone and switch over to the galaxy tab.
Thanks,
John

The AT&T TAB can do 3G and voice at the same time with the EURO firmware.

I found that thread by searching for the words AT&T and TAB. Stay away from the T-Mobile TAB if your service is through AT&T.
