... for Dummies - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi All,
for about 2 months I am the proud owner of
the SPV M1000 (= XDAII).
Looking around on this site, I've found there
is lots and lots of information.
But for me, its very scattered around the place.
I've found it very hard to get the right information
for upgrading my device. It's like having the pieces
of a puzzle, but not the picture.
Until now, I didn't had the nerve to do such an upgrade.
So much horror-stories.....
Is it possible that someone could make some kind of
"Upgrading for Dummies"-like guide?
I just need a step-by-step guide, when to do what,
which program (and version) etc.
It would make life much easier.
Cheers,
Theo
Operator version: 3.66.3.171
ROM version: 1.66.00 WWE
ROM date: 02/20/04
Radio version: 1.10.00
Protocol version: 1337.18
ExtROM version: 1.66.171
Provider: Netherlands - Orange

I also am very new to the XDA II and something like this would be very handy indeed.
I'm sure that if there are enough people showing interest someone might do it???

And I third that, but for the XDA I... This site is great, but using search is a very slow process. It would be really great to have an FAQ that would tell me things like turning of IR for NAV, how to turn off the personal screen and all the dummie stuff that no-one knows at the start because the manul had the pages glued together.... Or at least thats my excuse ;-)

Sticky Magician Must Read...

Apologies if i've overlooked or missed it but I can't seem to find a summing up of the roms, tweaks, patchs etc...
There are a few links, tips, howtos, etc I believe would be great for a sticky in this forum....
I've recently bought the so called "MDA Compact" in the UK on T-Mobile. Though now unlocked, am using my O2 Pay&Go SIM. I have TomTom running a treat with my BT GPS receiver.
When booting the following are displayed (I understand this relates to the software versions)
R 1.00.10
G 1337.36
D 1.01.00 WWE
I guess the first question I really have is which bits would you recommend updating? (and why? additional software, enhanced performance etc?)
From the threads I've read so far It seems there's a hidden "partition" on the rom (aka extended) which contains a bunch of .cab files that automatically installed on first boot (installing camera app, gprs/wap settings, dialler app etc). It would seem a good idea to amend these somewhat (get rid of the ugly T-Mobile skins and get some nice ones on there...) Add the O2 pay&go cab for gprs/wap/mms settings etc, maybe a decent photo contacts app etc then perform a hard reset...
Lots to discover and talk about, so little time (and patience grr!)- If anyone is interested I will see if i can pull together a summary of what i've found so far by trawling through threads... and consider making it a sticky?
P.S. I don't suppose there's an IRC channel?
The first thing I'd do is upgrade the "R" component - the radio. You get much better BT and phone call function.
As far as the ExtROM goes, I have seen apps to unlock it on the XDA II but they never worked properly on the mini. If you can find it, please let us all know!

yeah sticky would be cool, i also searched 2 days now over the hole forum and threads, but damm, its sooooooo big lol, one is sayin that, the other one is sayin another thing so im a little bit confused... but i didnt want to post again cuz they all r 1337 in that things and "i just bore them"...

Might have been better posting in the non-Universal sections? Might get more response?
Thank you for calling the Non Technical Support Line ..
How can I patronize you and/or refer you to the correct Support Line?
Thanks for calling, your call is important to us!

Simply saying, the vast majority of IIs users won't be looking in here, and might be able to help more...

Anton, surely you're right.
You might get a rude response from a Toyota helpine if you call about a problem with your Honda...

whats the last rom/radio? mms problem qtek 2020i

Hi there guys. i am new to pocket pc's, but i learn quickly. I have a problem with the MMS. I can SEND, but i cannot recieve mms. My operator is Connex-vodafone, and they gave me al the settings, but couldnt make it work. only sends. Gprs works fine. Whats the latest rom/radio combination for qtek 2020i? And where can I get it from? I have now radio 1.02 and ext rom 1.11.112. The branded ones, do they lock my ppc? Thanks very much!
.....
With an attitude like that it's unlikely you'll get a response.
This is a forum of like minded enthusiasts.. not a help desk...
OK thats my four pennyworth
There is lots of information on this site, in this forum even about upgrading the Alpine.
As far as versions go
WWE 1.11.169
Asia 1.11.192
Radio 1.04.
Just look in this forum and you'll find several updated roms that I myself have put up there. Just do a search for my name and you should find them.

The reason most people won't have answered is that they don't know. Somethings are all down to personal experience and if no-ones had that problem, they won't know the answer. What's the point in posting "I don't know"?

Also, learn maths. 6 days is not 3 weeks.
If you get better response from other forums with an attitude like that then piss off back there as it isn't wanted here. Sorry if you think I'm being harsh but I think it's totally justified.

Ok, of course you are right to be harsh. I was sure that someone will respond after that. Sorry about that. And thank you very much for the answer.
And i'll add a thanks for the fact that you edited out the content of the posting.....
Good luck with the problem

Should I upgrade my ExtROM?

I have the iMate K-Jam with the following versions:
ROM v1.1.9.3
ROM date 9/16/05
Radio version: 01.01.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.16
ExtROM version: 1.1.9.104
I currently have no problems with my K-Jam, and would like to keep it that way..
Like everyone else I'm keenly awaiting the Microsoft upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 (ie the one including Messaging and Security Feature Pack and the revised Bluetooth Profiles including A2D2P). So this morning I gave iMate's online support a whirl  ... and actually got to talk to someone  !
The individual I spoke to implied that this new functionality was available in the updated K-Jam ROM (Worldwide English) currently available for download. It's specs are:
ROM v1.1.9.3
Radio version: 01.01.10
ExtROM version: 1.1.9.106
Now call me an old cynic , but the version numbers don't look right to me - I read up on AKU2 versioning (can't find the link now) and these don't look right.
So I have 2 questions:
1. Is this ROM in fact the AKU2 release?
2. If not, will I gain anything from upgrading anyway?
TIA,
As I suspected, the aforementioned ROM release is not (as was implied by iMate's first-line support) AKU2.
Snipped from an email reply from [email protected]:
Thank you for contacting club i-mate technical support. Regarding your query about Microsoft AKU2.0 the new ROM version is in the last phase of Testing and will be released soon.

So (to answer my own questions)
1. No
2. If it ain't broke, don't fix it..

From my experience (and anyone else that has used it) i-mates "live support" is useless. I am really unsure why i-mate even bother with this service if they arent going to ensure that the staff that run the so called live support are able to give helpful answeres.
Although the email support can take some time to recieve an answer from, at least they seem to pass on correct info to users.
my 2 cents
Chris
speakin of imate customer service i was just online with the tech support, the guy joins "hi my name is chris, how may i help you?" i tell him my problem he says "ok" and then next thing i know it says "represantative has left the chat" what kinda **** is that? he doesn't know the answer so he just quits?
anyway on the topic of roms, how do i find out what my ExtRom is? its not on my device information under settings.

It's shown on your boot screen after a soft reset / switch off & on
(and at the bottom of your signature :lol
no, it wasn't showing up there either. last night i did a hard reset after customizing my extrom and now it shows where it is supposed to. so all is good. still have a couple unresolved issues but they deserve their own topic and i'll do that when i have time.

where the hell do i start????

hi all i've just got the HD2 and would like to install android but there's sooo many different roms, kernals, radio's etc and not to mention all the issues that go with it like:
blurry mms
bluetooth not working
robor voice
tinted pics
low sound
wrong battery display
freezing
not reloading on reboot etc etc!!!
i'm wondering is it all worth it and should i just swap it for a desire..same spec but with android built in!!!?
my phone is:
os vers: 5.2.21869 (21869.5.0.82)
manilla: 2.5.20121429.0
rom: 1.72.161.3(82124) wwe
rom date: 24/3/10
radio: 2.07.51.22_2
protocol: 15.32.50.07u
i just dont know where to sater regarding roms, kernals, radio etc???
can anyone help and recommend the best set up?
all help apreciated
Hspl is first step then a x.xx.50.xx radio, I'm liking the 2.15.50 radio, install android compatible winmo rom, select android build you'd like to try, unzip to sd card.. Use file explorer find android folder, inside android folder find and tap clrcad.exe (will not show response), then haret.exe wait for android to boot..blurry mms is usually on tmous.. And the rest of it mostly has been fixed.. If you don't like it, deleted it from sd card. Play with phone for next couple hrs.. Have fun!!
swyped from my HD2 Android
Not for the faint hearted!!!

I genuinely don't want to sound harsh, but you really need to take a step back, go grab a cup of coffee or green tea, then Read some more.
Any pointers that anyone gives you in this thread will just be a shortcut/ outline to the info that's already there.
If you don't read up before hand you prob' won't have a grasp on what you are doing & run into the issues you mentioned.
Best advice is to be patient & read the info that's available, its worked for a lot of peeps n it can work for you.
However if you're not into rolling ur sleeves up, go get the desire.
small tip tho...
Squish099 has given you the general direction you need to go in, that's a good start, then go with the most popular rom threads to start with (applies to winmo & android) as you are more likely to get a response if you get stuck.
Good luck!
I agree with Kam33, reading loads of stuff can make one feel overwhelmed
but, a simple suggestion, is to take your time, do a careful performance of
recommended steps. Learning comes from experience, as the saying goes
that applies here also in XDA
