I've been using WinMo for a few years now - since I got a C500 ( a great device) and I love my Athena BUT it's getting a bit battered and the camera no longer works and I've had it a while. I've also found myself using my C600 because the Athena is, let's face it, a bit of a brick to carry all the time.
I know it's blasphemy but I've actually been looking at the Nokia E90 - has anyone else looked at this and decided to go for it - or not?
Any views on the E90?
Cheers
To be honest, jumping from one OS to another is a tough decision. If you are dependent on 3rd party applications such as myself, then you will have a problem with symbian. If you use the device for it's calendar, phone, editing word, or any built-in application, then switchng to the E90 is the best choice for you.
My first PDA was palm OS, although I love it, switching from Palm to WM was easy because of the availability of 3rd party software that I needed.
Hope this helps...
i got a sony ericsson p1i, symbian uiq 3.0. if im honest, its a great normal phone, and replaced my athena. but it has bugs i cant solve like sms not appearing in the today plugin-like thing. [its basically like spb diary, with pluses for calenday inbox and tasks, but inbox always reads zero even when texts have been recieved, so i have to always check inbox manually]
Anyways, its limited though, you can get the programs you need, but it just isnt wm. when i first got it, it literally made my athena redundant, because of its small size, same camera, and realy because my athena is more for fun. but recently, ive began using my athena again. [on my trip to wigan yesterday i had my athena on for about an hour on the journey, purrely for opera and wlm. uiq3 has opera 8.65 or whatever the last v8 one was installed, and it works wiht finger scrolling and all that, but it just isnt the same as 96dpi 9.5. and things like i cant change the brightness easily, or connect to wlan, and theres about 6 types of gprs/3g connection and half o the time it connects to the wrong one and stuff like that.
so confucious, if you want to downscale in size and other things, then go for the symbian route, but if not, get a touch diamond
as ive said though, im using iuq 3, wheras the e90 has s60 [i think]
Rory
Thanks for the reply - I've just bought a 'refurbished' E90 of fleabay - lets hope it's OK when it gets here!
i hope youre sill gona keep your athena, i will miss your funny remarks if you get rid of it.
and will you post a review or your views on the e90 like someone did ages ago (i think it was eaglesteve)
And how much was it?

It was Leoni who posted the review I think.
Would be interexted to see that review but you can't search for e90 and user Roni only has 1 post (there are many other roniXXXs)
I will, of course keep my Athena and will let you know how I get on with my e90 and how it compares - that is, of course, if it arrives and is usable....

I believe this is the thread that is being refered to by Leoni1980

Phone just arrived, put T-Mob SIM in and it connected straight away to the internet, then I got a text from T with their settings, up and running in no time
Thanks for the link lakeman just reading now.
So far, so good
Yes, this is the review I was talking about. Sorry for leading you down the road by the spelling errors.
Thanks for the replies, eaglesteve, it is far better to reply and make a mistake than not reply at all. Your input, as always, is appreciated.
My E90 turned up today after winning it yesterday morning £171 inc P&P - that was for the phone and battery only - I've ordered a charger and car charger for another £13 but don't have tanything else - won't miss the headphones and software I can download - am I missing anything?
I seem to have a bargain!
So far I really like it

My ears pricked up.
Don't forget to upgrade your firmware to enable flash support. It works great on the E90s screen. And get an 8gb micro sdhc from play.com if you don't have one already. I thoroughly recommend coreplayer for symbian too: it works superbly with almost any video you throw at it, including .flv.
And of course Garmin xt for all you'd satnav needs
Ordered 4Gb card cos they are cheap.
The latest firmware doesn't seam to be available - it was up then taken down. I guess I'll find out when it is released!
I use CP7 for SatNav - will have to get them to dort it out so it works on the E90 screen!
Thanks for the advice.
wow! 177 for an e90, i have never looked but always assumed they were more then the athena.
im waiting for your impressions
Rory
they're cheaper than the Athena but 177 is an incredibly low price - I'm impressed.
Ive always been caught up somewhere between a business and a pleasure device, and for me the E90 ticked more boxes than the Athena because as well as push email and document viewing/editing there's a much better camera and video recorder and better flash support from within the browser (not to mention a nicer keyboard for typing on).
With the new touch 4 rom the Athena looks great, and Opera 9.5 is a big step forward but still the E90 has the edge for me.
It was £171 but another £13 for chargers.
Woke up this morning and battery is flat
My charger hasn't arrived yet but can borrow one at work
So far I'm very impressed but got problems getting my cert on it so haven't got Push email working yet.

You might already know that Copilot 7 is just released for Symbian devices.
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/14637/15661/copilot-7-available-symbian-phones.phtml
Yes, i still haven't received my DVD from them but have already downloaded it. I haven't installed it yet as I am waiting for my memory card to turn up!
Apparently it doesn't work properly on the big screen so I've already asked about them fixing that....
Before I list it, I want to make it look like the nicest phone on the market.
I already unlocked it but now I'm looking for the best ROM to make it stand out of the crowd. I was thinking about Schap's but I don't know many ROMs.
Can you guys give advice?
Thanks in advance!
-Nick
I don't think it really matters... What you're asking about is eye candy, skins, today apps and such. Do a search on skinning. Ultimate Launch, RLToday, Manilla Touchflow 2d - these are a few Apps that make the today screen more funtional. You need to look at the skins developed for them to get a good idea.
Cheers...
Yes but I also want cool functionality out of the box so the buyer has it all after a hard reset.
The rom you like may not be the rom someone else likes. It depends on the person who wins it. If I got it, I can guarantee that it wouold be looked at quickly then reflashed within 10 minutes of me getting it. Most people I know who have this type of phone don't even know how to reflash , or are too scared to. I had 2 people who got a Jasjam because I got one and showed them what you could do with it. I ended up being tech support for them and still am even though I left that workplace.
My advice, Hr the device, put on a today replacement that you think looks good and put a picture on ebay. Anyone hardcore will probably have a new os on it pretty quick but someone who has no idea will leave it as is.
Cheers...

That's a good idea indeed, but what about WM6.1?
Just the sight of it make some go crazy. In the condition my phone is, I might be able to get in the 300's.
I might find the simplest 6.1 ROM (I downloaded S64's ROM, don't know about the others) and load it in there. Then I'll take a video, put it on YouTube and add it in the listing.
I plan on adding it to the header.
To say I paid this phone 180$ a year ago... (plus 50$ worth of shipping charges for repairs)
I like S64's ROMs but they can be PACKED with 3rd party apps... I tend to find my hermes runs a little slow with his ROMs. Try a lite version though, they're still pretty packed but don't have the apps you don't need.
Personally I'd try a PDAViet rom, something like OS 5.2.20226 (Build 20226.1.3.0 PV DVH) Diamond(01) 3G 6MB PP. A little old, I know, but stable and has a lot of things you want. You can also add other apps on the memory card as cab files to be installed as needed.
Cheers...
You can find other 6.1 ROMs in the WM06 forum. Ask yourself "What do you think the rom needs to have if I went to buy this phone?", Then make sure it has this.
I am due an upgrade on my phone and I am trying to decide between an iphone and a HTC HD2. I prefer the HTC as a phone but the apps on the iphone is making it a hard decision.
I am on the road constantly as a field technician so would like to have sat nav, music, games and videos on the phone to keep me entertained when I am in the middle of nowhere with some down time.
Is there anything that can be done to the HTC to make it more versatile like a jailbroken iphone? would the HTC be able to do what I am looking for or am I better going for an iphone?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer me some advice.

When you say "Is there anything that can be done to the HTC to make it more versatile like a jailbroken iphone?"
What exactly do you mean?
The HD2 is a very versatile handset from the start, and no need to jailbreak to get full functionality

thanks for the reply, what I mean is are you limited to what can be put onto the HTC? I have been into several shops stocking them and the staff dont seem to know much about them and keep trying to sell me an iphone, possibly because they are getting better commisson on the iphone?
I have looked around online for info as to what can be put onto the HTC but cant seem to find out much about it. applications seem to be very limited for what seems to be a better device than the iphone.
would the HTC be able to meet the criteria I have for the phone?

Heh - and then some.
You need to look for software for windows mobile, not HTC. The only real things you need to consider are that you need software that is fully touch compatible, it needs to be WVGA compatible (you can get away with a lot of VGA software too, as they mostly rely on the width in portrait, which is the same for both resolutions), and is it for the right version of Windows. Normally, you can get away with anything that is Windows Mobile 6.1 onwards, but that's not always the case.
Just google for windows mobile software and forget about jailbait iPhones. It ultimately comes down to whether you want a smartphone or a toy (I'm not actually knocking the iPhone - I think it's great, but it is a toy).
Incidentally, don't worry about MarketPlace too much. Most people think it's crap and there's a reason for that... it pretty much is. If you want apps wrapped up in one place, try OpenMarket. You can get it here...

I have seen iphones running sat nav with lane assist and speed camera alerts, would it be possible to get the same kind of sat nav on the HTC and if so how much would it cost me?
Really dont want to go down the iphone route like half of the rest of the world has, would like to get something a little different.
The HD2 can do whatever the iPhone can...minus the ease of use [sometimes]. Sometimes it doesn't work out of the box because there are countless version of builds for manila and such...and only one for iphone. Pretty much the only gripe people will have is that they have to go and FIND whatever it is that they're looking for on the HD2, whereas everything is readily available on the app store for the iphone. You should take some time and play with each device and see what the pros and cons are for YOU. If it's too troublesome for you to dig through different versions of a program to play your video or whatnot, then it's better to get an iphone.

in the uk we get co pilot bundled with the phone as standard. it works perfectly and integrates very will with the phones gps. i used to run tom tom (latest version) on my omnia, which is also a win mobile phone so see no reason why it shouldn't run well on the HD2 as well.
both tom tom and co pilot work with additional info such as speed cameras etc.
i am sure that google will be your friend, just search for navigation software windows mobile or similar and am sure plenty of results will ensue.

depends on the severity of the "issues." I'm on AT&T and have not encountered any kind of problems that some people have.
I don't have the faulty capacitive screen
I don't have any battery drainage issue (good for 2-3 days)
I don't have SMS not sending/receiving
I don't have SMS sending to the wrong person
The phone doesn't froze on me [unless it's my own doing]
etc etc..
So outside of you installing some rogue software/program that cause whatever issues that you might encounter, the phone itself is as perfect as a smartphone goes. I can't really pinpoint anything significant problem about this phone.

Some is hardware and some is software (ie, manila). Pretty much all of the problems I've listed have been solved ever since their early release back in Oct/Nov.
yeah, we all know that there are about 100.000 apps crusing around
but, let me say it, which one do you REALLY need?
my brothers got an ipod touch with about 100apps on it...but for everydayusing there are only a handful...
so i would say, that you can even find such apps for windows mobile...everything you really need...and not 100.000 apps, from which are about 98% useless imho.

good point well made. ill do that.
It's been fun, but I'm saying good-bye to my HD2.
The lag and crashing issues aren't THAT bad (excluding the texting program) but it's just inconvenient. A phone shouldn't have any of these issues, right?? And its nice that you can try different ROMs to find better performance but you shouldn't have to search for an alternative such as that after receiving your $450 brand new phone (I regret paying the full retail price so bad. I shouldn't have bought into the hype).
And for those of you claiming to have ZERO problems with your stock TMOUS HD2's running default ROMs, I question what your definitions of "problem" and "inconvenience" are, along with your perception of lag and ability to notice it. But if our perception to lag and detail is the same and you actually don't have any problems then you are very lucky.
Things I love: Browsing, Sense minus texting, Screen, Office Mobile, Camera
Things I hate: Texting, crashes, drop of 3G (probably more of T-Mobile's fault), lack of Apps compared to the droid and apple platforms.
To be honest, if I didn't text so much, I'd probably keep the phone.
Once again, it's been fun and this forum has been VERY helpful in my quest to fix the phone. Everyone is nice and overall very well informed. Thanks!
-Alex
PS, if anyone has some secret solution to this problem(s) other than trying the latest 2.13 ROM from T-mobile (which I have already tried), I'd be willing to keep the phone!

have you updated to the latest rom? texting has greatly improved IMHO. that was also my major concern with this phone prior to the update.
I agree with you to a certain extent, Alex. But I am more of a tinkerer to find solutions to the problems. If there weren't ANY problems with the phone, I would get rid of it!!!!
As far as texting... have you tried Swype? I came from a hardware-keyboard phone myself, and hated trying to text with the onscreen keyboard. But after getting used to Swype, I can say that I am MUCH happier.
With all that said... I'll give you $100 for your phone!!!!
I'll go to 105.
Alex,
If you bought a car, and a few months later the manufacturer announces they have a modification they can do to the car that will address certain issues, including one that you're experiencing (let's assume something other than critical safety issues)....do you return the car, or let them apply the modification?
It's the same idea with the new tmo ROM...it's an official update that you should try, especially with your SMS issues. No product is perfect out of the gate, and an official update like this is the only real way for them to try to fix issues from the factory. If you like the phone other than those reasons you listed, it seems silly to walk away from it already without even giving that a try.
Sorry that I didn't make it clear but I'm running the 2.13 right now. Texting is a little better but still laggy. And I should probably give swype a try before writing it off. We will see. Thanks guys

Alex, what phone are you gonna switch to?
Software Vs. Hardware
I really don't have any major problems with anything on the stock rom. No lags or nothing. That being said, if I experienced any issues my first response would be to find out if its hardware or software related.
In my mind, you can solve every single software related issues and I really love the HD2 hardware so there is no way I will ever return mine just because I face some software issues. And this is the great thing about WM, you can actually tweak it to function the way you want.
I must say that this is not the phone for someone who wants it work out of the box. I mean it works but you really need to know what you are doing. Regarding the apps, WM has far more apps then any mobile os out there, you cannot just compare the marketplace apps. Its WM, you have to know what you are getting into before you buy a phone.

Yes I would definitely give swype a try, once you use it, it's a whole different touch-typing experience.
The only other thing I'd ask is how often you clear out text messages on your phone? I think that 99% of the SMS freezing is due to too many text messages in the client at once. I clean mine out once a day at least, more if I'm texting a lot that day. I simply run a quick myphone backup to save them off-phone, and then I wipe out any threads I'm not currently conversing in (including clearing the deleted items folder). I never have any SMS freezing, even on the original (2.10) tmo ROM I'm still running.

I'm testing out swype. I don't like it for the moment but I think its just because I'm not used to it. Gonna keep messing with it. As for clearing messages, I try not to let mine exceed 50. I wish I never had SMS freezing. I had less freezing on Kumar's classic 1.6 though

let me know if you decide you want to get rid of your phone. I would seriously consider buying it if your price isn't to far fetched.

Regarding the apps, WM has far more apps then any mobile os out there, you cannot just compare the marketplace apps.

Apps that are compatible with this phone's resolution? Apps that compare to the UI of other platforms? Games that are similar to one on the other platforms?
Until you can show me this, I will still consider WM phones to be a NON-app instensive platform. Yes, they have all the apps you could need to do anything with, but they don't have all the apps you WANT.

What do you consider a "far fetched" price to be? I cant take too big of a loss either you know.

pm me with a price and i will let you know if i can afford it.
i want to get rid of my phone too, evo 4g is out and it puts this phone to shame.. the laggy texting ect..swype wont even help u.. and u can get swype for a lot of phones anyway.
I have to agree with you 100%, I am coming of of a Nokia E51 which for a three year old phone has more basic, logical features which I though every phone would have.
The sms lagg is horrible and I experience all the time, or the fact that we cant keep the hom page looking the way it does and turn off the active weather. It lags the crap out of th phone if u just go to move screens or find something and its showing you clouds for 19 seconds scrolling by..
you cannot uninstal the useless applications that came with it without whiping the entire phone.
The new update is fine and dandy, but It clears the whole phone, so eveyr thign I have installed and set i have to redo just to get an upgrade, totaly idiotic in my mind. If its a OS update, then it should only effect the OS backround files not reset the total system.
Backing up contact. Sims only store 250 contact. I have over 300 so I have many on my phone it self, to copy the entire phone book to memory card, i have to do it one by one. Yes I know I can instal an app for it, but should I really have to? thats should be a basic app. Syncing with your computer, requires you to have email set up in outlook, I dont use out look, so I have to go through all that troube just to get that done.
In my house, my nokia has full signal at all times, with this new bad boy phone i barly get one bar if I am lucky.
Just simple little things which should be an automacit features on phones are missing here. I dont get the thinking behind that.
To the person who did the car analogy. Would you buy a expensive car if you had to install the breaks you self after purchase.. Oh you want a rear veiw mirror? here is a mirror, and some glue go have fun? no you would not, you would expect all functions to be there.
The phone doesnt even allow you to control how you view your contacts for crying out loud, I had to D/L an app to set if i want to view first name/ last name, vs the default last name first name. That is just bad.
Out side of a big shiny screen that eats ur batery life in one day and the camera.. nothing special.
just my two cents
rysky007, I agree with you for the most part
Would you buy a car knowing that it does not come with certain features or does not perform the way you want it to? Or do you just buy any car expecting all of them to come with features just because a car of another brand had them? There is a reason why it's better to lease a BMW than buying it.
It seems like you're the average joe that bought into the hype not knowing what Windows Mobile is.
Don't come crying just because the phone was not what you expected it to be. Do your homework next time before making a purchase.

A better analogy is you are buying a stock BMW and expecting it to drive like a F1 race car. Fact is, you have to add certain available add-ons to make it into a M5-ish car with the type of race tires you want and the suspension your driving habits need.
I read all the complaints and this was one of the main reason.
I'm too curious, and I'm used to not buy the devices that everybody owns.
It's too easy
So I want to see how this phone can evolve.
The HW is more than decent, the keyboard is awesome, the form factor is perfect, the design is sexy, the battery life is really good.
So I hope that we can improve this phone greatly, maybe with just few tweaks.
And remeber what's happened with many many devices.
The milstone, the storm, the imate 8502, the xperia x1 and so on, they were all crappy phones initially, now they are all usable and enjoyable, so let the same happens for X2 !!
Heh, it's not SUCH a madness
Well I made it usable, I mean I do alot with it.....
Without any tweaks, just by uninstalling not needed Panels....

Yes I already read the (few) suggestions already in the wild.
Atm I'm just seeing what of the sw I used in other wm devices works.
I tried navigon demo which works flawlessly (but a bit outdated), while I
can't get working IGO8 or any newer Navigon version's.
Also aebuttons plus doesn't works reliably to map the volume rocker as scroller.
I'm just a week or so to see what else is wrong, before starting to kill the sonyericsson's addons.
ATM I'm not unhappy, and my milestone is a bit jealous...

I manually edited the related registry values, my X2 has made errors on SD filsystems just few minutes after the unboxing (and few minutes before the MR2 update).
But I'm afraid this fix is not bulletproof, I saw the disappeared SD after MR + SD fix.
I hope in a bugfix from SE, even if they doesn't want release an MR3 firmware.
I think all is OK if you got it as a toy for a good price
Does anyone has a contact to someone responsible in SE so we know for sure they already dumped the phone?

Here (in Italy) the phone starts selling now, Sonyericsson (as usual) is the best phone manufacturer with the worst marketing team.
after almost 8 years of owning only SE phones this is my last one
as soon as Samsung Epic 4G comes here I'll buy one
I almost made the mistake of buying an HD2 and tried of reasoning that owning a decent qwerty phone is just a dream, but i just played with the I9000 on which the Epic 4g is based and it's pure madness...it has huge frames, dwonloads torrents with 500-550 k/s it's awsome
SE u lost another stupid customer that payed 600$ on a piece a garbage nice looking plastic box with an 8mp camera that does poorer pictures than an Blackberry...
Good luck anywas with your project of seeing an X2 running at least 3 days with any lockup, making a decent picture without manually adjusting everything and more than 13-16 fps in the menus.
Kind regards all and i'm sorry i did not read throughtly all of the x2 threads before buying it !
I still have a tiny hope that one day X2 will be completely fixed. Aspen looks like an interesting phone, but one of many, while X2 has quite unique design.
Anyway I ended up ordering LG eXpo from the USA, hope it will work without problems (it should).
F*****g SE can't assign a few people on fixing X2? Damn them! One thing is when phone is not working as it should, but when a fix is planned, one can look something forward to.

I got 6,7 Mbps (800+ KB/s) with every HSDPA7.2/HSUPA I've tried in the last couple of years, and about 8Mbps (1MB/s) whit some modern handsets like the N900 or the Milestone.
So what is the awesomeness in getting 500 KBs (I suppose do you mean kilobyte/sec) in a phone released now ?
I'll be eternally grateful if you can find a registry fix for irregular text message alerts.
I suspect it has to do with power usage settings. Typically after a reset, the alerts go fine for the first few, and unfailingly fail thereafter. It will come back on upon charging the phone, without any reset. Leads me to suspect it has to do with different power management profiles kicking in, but that's quite a shot in the dark.
Good luck with the project, i hope you'll not join me and everyone else shortly as another SE hating zombie lol.
