Hi,
some time when I take a movie, expecially with few light, some hateful horizontal bars come up on the screen. Once I had to SoftReset to have my camera working back. Did it happen to someone else? Should I go to an assistence service point?
You may try to play with "flicker adjustment" option in camera. Try to set it to 50 or 60 hz.
I've had this before, and it's usually because another program is running and using too much CPU.

Nothing wrong with a soft-reset, this will clear out any running programs, or you can use settings->memory->running programs->Stop all.

thanx for your answer,
I supposed that it could depend on CPU. Infact, the first time I had this problem, XCPUu Scaler was running, and I thought that incostant level of CPU could bring noise to the cam function. But the last time I incurred into the same problem, I had uninstalled it yet, and probably, as you said, there should be some other app running that brang CPU to a lower level.
Well
I get this too, but it's generally when the radio has a particularly weak signal and is trying to find the operator. If you turn the radio off it generally goes away, same as if you're in an area where you get strong/full signal you probably/shouldn't get it.

Thanx for your answer...so it should be some like an interference...mmm interesting hypothesis...
exactly the same happens to my device when there is some activity on GPRS connections.
I have this when my gsm connection is being established and when a location update is being performed or am in a bad singal area (coming in and out of range of a cell). If you had the camera on during a call I can say 99% sure that you'll get the same interference.
Well, at least I am not alone with this problem... :?

Anyone else notice the lousy RF the XDA seems to have?
Now I am not referring to the signal meter, cause I know that it isn't very accurate anyway. But I can definately notice the RF fading in and out when in a call, plus the normal signs that the RF is flucuating.
There is VERY good signal throughout my area, and I use the phone from home mainly. My previous phone, which was a Samsung flipphone, the RF was fabulous and never had a problem with it.

I'm having the same problem. When I first purchased the phone I had awsome reception, now it seems the reception is nowhere... This happened before the ROM upgrade also so I know it wasn't that.
I've got the exact same problem....
At first it was perfect but now it sometimes suddenly sounds mettalic....
I have lots of fading as well, also an inordinate number of disconnects, if I put my sim in another phone it works fine. Having said that, I can live with it.
I just updated my phone ROM to the latest, lets see if that solves the problem!
I propose that one of these GPS problem threads be made sticky since we cannot simply search "GPS" here and the GPS problems seem to be accumulating.
With that said, I would have to say that my GPS performance is pretty terrible. At first, it felt like doing the QuickGPS thing and/or deleting the xtra.bin file helped. For the most part, though, getting a lock has proven quite sporadic. What should the expectation here be? Should I expect the GPS to work reliably indoors? What about if I am near a window? Why would it work in some buildings near a window and not in others?
My personal opinion is that the GPS should work within 15-20 feet of a window. Using Chartcross GPS Test, even when the GPS is locked, I am getting mostly yellow bars. I am not exactly sure what a good reading looks like on Chartcross, but there appears to be a 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% bar. Maybe the 25% bar is 100%? In any event, I rarely have a satellite that is getting above what I suspect to be 30%.
Is there a thread somewhere that details what the various fields mean and/or should read in Chartcross or a similar utility? I am coming up on my 30 days to return the phone, so if someone thinks that my device may be defective please speak up!
Thanks as always XDA-ers!
GPS signals are not strong, you have to be near a window (e.g. less than 50cm) or outside to get it to work properly. Inside I get 8 sats with too little to lock, outside I can get up to 11 locked. I use modified GPS settings to improve the lock. I've created a CAB for you.

No you cant use it inside, but this has nothing to do with windows. Think of it this way:
To use the GPS, you need a line of sight to the sky, small barriers it will work through (like car roofs). So even a "line of sight" to a window, wont help you because of the thikness of the house roof. To be able to use GPS inside, you need something else, like a big antenna
Anyways, the GPS is for outside/car use only.

That is partially true. The signal can "reflect" off surfaces as well, though - as with light - weaker. And it does have to do with windows simply because a window has a lot (lot!) less density than say, a brick wall. Less density means easier path for the signal. Being near a window does indeed increase the chance of signal lock.

Well, it depends on several factors. If your home is made of wood instead of brick, that'll make a difference. If you live higher above sea level, it might make a difference. If you live on the countryside, that will definitely make a difference. I happen to live below sea level in a brick house in the middle of an average sized city. My reception won't be something to write home about

you wont get any signal (or good accurate location) if you are in a big city.... your best bet is using google map w/ agps and let the cell tower locate where you are at
another thing I want to point out.... I tried using the gps on x1 when I was on the plane... while it was always able to lock on to a couple sats... it wasnt able to locate where I was at .... and the worst part is after I get back on the ground... the gps stop working and I had to hard reset my phone .... I tested it twice and both seems to be the case... so if you dont want to hard reset your phone.... I suggest you not to try it next time when you are on the plane

I really appreciate the quick reply and cab file. I will load it shortly. Is my understanding correct that A-GPS is turned off by default? If so, does this cab enable it? What improvement did you see with your cab file? Lastly, do you use Chartcross GPS test? I'm trying to figure out what the different fields/values mean in it.
Thanks!
Careful with changing the A-GPS to on by default. You can do this through Schapman's advanced configuration tool too, but I've had nothing but bad luck with it.
I use iGO8 and after I turned A-GPS on, the gps signal would drop every few seconds and would have a hard time finding satellites. Switching everything back to factory "defaults" and just using quickgps updates, I've had zero issues. Apart from the initial sat discovery, it's always fast to start and fast to pick back up (maybe 2-3 seconds) again.

GPS is only able to keep a lock under a certain speed. Airplanes are fast, so you will lose the lock. Once on the ground you can get a lock again by running QuickGPS. As your location has changed tremendously (depends on how far you fly ofc), the sattelites aren't where your phone thinks they are.

You're welcome. My CAB does not enable aGPS, as it sometimes causes problems like quoted below. It changes some registry settings that basically tell your phone to keep looking for a better lock, for a longer period of time.

Do not that your individual experience with aGPS doesn't generalize to everyone. I've personally tried aGPS here. It made 0 difference (as far as I could tell), so turned it off again.
If you wish to try aGPS, feel free to do so, as it can be disabled as easily as it can be enabled, a hard-reset should not be neccesary.

Hi everyone!
I'm having a tough time deciding whether to get an HD2 or a Nokia N900, mainly because of one main feature on the N900: As far as I can tell, the Nokia N900 allows you to stay online (Instant Messaging, VoIP) permanently, even when the device is in standby - so ICQ, Skype, SIP, MSN are all connected, and if you get a new message or a call, the device will notify you.
I haven't used many modern WinMo devices, so I'm not sure if anything similar to this is possible with WinMo 6.5 (I've used WM6.5 ROMs on my Prophet, but I'm guessing a lot of features were stripped out to make them run at all )... is it possible to do this on the Leo?
I want the device to _always_ be online - if there's WiFi it should connect to that, and if not then it should connect to cellular data. This should obviously also be automatic, so that I don't have to manually log onto the WiFi every time I get home or to university...
Is this use supported? Or would it be more of a hack that runs down the battery like crazy (IIRC you can turn on WiFi permanently, so that it doesn't turn off when you put the phone in standby - not sure if the apps would stay connected, though)...
Thanks in advance!
I think the HD used to turn wifi off when the phone went into standby (I don't think I ever used wifi), but it used to stay connected over 3g for IM and the like when you turned the phone off (stand by)
Oh really? I thought 3G was turned off too... well, I guess that's a step in the right direction.
Anyone know about WiFi and automatic switching?
By default the WIFI is switched off when in standby, but it's possible to change it.
However, having WIFI always on will drain the battery completly.
Regarding to the automatic change, no idea!
And there's no way to lower the WiFi signal strength enough so that it doesn't drain the battery? What if you set WiFi power mode to best battery? On my Prophet it's unusable because the signal is nearly nonexistant, but I was hoping that they'd have changed this for the HD2...
Ideally it'd lower the signal strength as far as possible without dropping the signal when in standby, and then power up to a sufficient speed when the device is actually on...
Wi-Fi only turns off if you want ot too. You can change the way Wi-Fi works in the settings and let it be always on, even if you turn off the screen.
Is this new on the Leo?
Does that drain the battery quickly? Or is it in a low-power mode?
Even with the Best battery setting it won't last too long, I'm afraid. Or, as you have said, it won't have good enough reception to actually connect to anything.
I have no idea how this is implemented in Nokias, it actually sounds like a kind of magic if you're saying it doesn't kill the battery.
I've never heard about an automatic switching solution (or even about the problem, for that matter). It's relatively easy to implement periodic polling but even that will have serious adverse effect on your battery.

It's been on WM since times immemorial - it's a registry setting, and there are programs that allow you to change it without manually tweaking your registry.
Yes, it does drain your battery, even in low-power mode.

Sure, but you'd also drain your battery without noticing. I would certainly be cautious about it - I can connect to WiFi at work, at shopping malls, cafes, and sometimes even in the streets. I don't want to end up being unable to make a call because I saved a couple bucks. But maybe that's just me...
BTW, I did a quick poll here at my office - all Nokia owners have this feature disabled, they say it drains battery rather quickly. This is not in any way a scientific research, but I don't believe in miracles anyway.

I leave MSN loged in on my diamond all the time. Wifi is on. it turns wifi off in standby, but msn stays logged in over the normal network connections, I alerts me I receieved a msg in the same way it does with a text. When it comes out of standby it auto reconnects to wifi.

The navigation application is always "searching for GPS"
sorry for my english
No need to apologise, your English is perfectly understandable.
How long has it been searching for a fix?
Usually your GPS has to download a file called an "almanac" which tells your gps chip where satellites will be at certain times. This can be a slow process and is only done once as your phone will keep it updated thereafter.
Your phone should use your data connection to speed this process up (A-GPS).

Lucky guy, i almost all the time w8 while GPS fix (even when the sky are blue and sun is shining) and even when 10 and more satellites are available, for 1-2 mins . Yeah, it's not a long time but when i'm driving or even walking i need it to be done in second not minutes... I have a device to compare with that's why I'm so critical in this question... Almost forgot... the device is iPhone 4.... I hate iphone after he is beating my GPS like a boy..
My GPS drives me nuts ... the signal is weak even outdoors on a sunny day. GPS Test shows maximum levels of around 25 on the street and even less on the balcony.
From the reports and Youtube videos I saw, the TF should do better than this, instead of constantly loosing GPS signal, shouldn't it?
Btw, I tried all available settings.
Might my TF be faulty?
PS: Is it normal, that the TF has less GPS problems in the late evening?
I haven't been all that happy with the GPS performance either. I haven't managed to get a lock when starting from a cold start at all, it sits there finding no more than 3 or 4 satellites at low levels, even after 20 minutes. By cold start I mean the satellite data wasn't updated in a long time, and therefore the TF is searching on his own for satellites.
When I was connected with Wifi and launched different GPS apps, I was able to get a lock in about a minute or so, which is more normal.
Unless you have the ability to tether to your phone, or or are connected to a wireless router, I think it's absolutely necessary to keep your TF's satellite list up to date manually, or before you leave and know you will be using your TF as GPS device.
I don't think late evening has to do with anything, but the weather can definately interfere (think fog, rain, lot's of clouds).

Currently in the late evening that's what happens with my TF ... I even get a low level around 20 sitting on the sofa 2 meters away from the window.
This afternoon I even had problems in front of the house with a clear sky, where I also had WiFi connection. Yesterday the same experience.
Why is it better in the evening in my case? Strange.
But maybe I have an explanation: On the roof of the house on the opposite side of the street is a large cell phone antenna. Might this cause my problems? Maybe because there's less traffic in the evening?
Problem solved !
I downloaded MapDroid and tested the GPS in the car ... voila ... worked like a charm.
I drove 20km with the TF switched off, stopped, loaded MapDroid, waited until my position appeared on the map, which only took 1-2 minutes and drove back, checking the map at every traffic light.
So it seems, this cell phone antenna on the neighbour house caused my GPS problems at home.
Nice one. I don't think I've actually noticed one of those towers or know what they look like.
ehow.com 's suggestion on how to acquire a GPS signal:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7315691_acquire-gps-signal.html
"2. Get away from anything emitting electronic signals. Radio towers, cell phone towers, and other electronic signals can cause interference with GPS signals, leaving your receiver with little to no reception."

Just google images for "cell phone towers" and you'll find tons of examples. The one on the house is one (!) of this flat long things. The huge masts with lots of antennas you see in most pics are usually not found in residential areas ... at least here in Germany.
well..a trade-off for getting a strong cell phone signal!
