Cannot set buttons - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I had Vito button mapper installed on my XDA II. Nice app but a bit pricy. When I uninstalled it I lost the system button settings app altogether.
I know the obvious answer is a hard reset but is there any other way to get it back?
Thanks.

Start button without using Stylus?

I'm probably missing something obvious but on my XDA Mini S I don't appear to be able to press the "start" button on the today screen via a hard button (used to be centre button on my old XDAIIs) without having to get the stylus out.
I'm sure we're both missing something, 'cus I concur.
However, if you find yourself desperate you can install my program VJKeypress (on my website) and use the command line 91 to pop the start menu. Make a shortcut and assign it to a hardware key.
V
i just slide the keyboard out a bit about .75cm and the start key on the keyboard is exposed, press it and VOILA!! hahaha, yah i thought the keyboard wouldn't work unless its out all the way but it does
i use my finger.

If God wanted me to pull the stylus out everytime, he wouldn't have given me fingers! also anything to hand (as long as gentle) ie a real pen (nib withdrawn or the ink might mark the screen), screwdriver, key etc.
Also screen protector so you dont damage anything
I made this for using on my i-mate k-jam.
After installation you can use left software key to Start
Why do you want to do this easy thing in such a complex way? Just open Settings, click Buttons and assign <Start Menu> to any of your hardware buttons. I have configured Button 1 to open start menu (it's messaging bu default) and Button 2 for <OK/Close> (that button is IE by default).

I guess its all about personal preference

Yup, me too.
By far the simplest solution.
I did try installing VITO ButtonMapper so I could have multiple apps mapped to the buttons but it has screwed up my 'soft buttons'.
DON'T USE IT, or Battery Pack Pro for that matter as it screwed up the whole PDA.

i had the same problems with vito buttonmapper. toggling buttonmapper on and off a few times seemed to fix it. not very good i know but it works perfectly now.
I used to set the Comm button to act as the start button. Don't do that anymore these days because i needed the quick button to the Comm manager. Thank god for fingers
I still bind the memo/speech button on the right to the OK/Close button at the top right button. Found it easier to use when typing the the keyboard or in normal mode.
All well least it wasn't me being dim! thanks for all the suggestions but just don't have a spare button to remap.
You'd think that they would have bound the Today screen "Start" function to a press of the directional button as it doesn't do anything else when on the today screen(as it was on the Blue Angel), but maybe that's just too logical!
assigning START menu to a button doesn't work when u have tomtom running. The menu pops up and just disappears again. It works in most of other apps though.
Got it!!!!
Just discovered that holding down the left soft key for about 1 second(rather than just tapping it to open calendar) opens the Start menu.
This is the feature of Smartskey
But I don't have smartskey installed so this must be a default function

Tried it here on my 2.24 ROM and it does not work. I press and hold for a second, also tried other varying lengths of time, and sure enough I always get the app the left soft button has been assigned.
Bizarre, works fine on mine - 2.21.4.1 Rom, 2.07 Radio UK XDA Mini S
Only apps I have installed are SPBBackup, Resco Explorer trial (expired) and TT5
Maybe a feature of the O2 UK Ext Rom?!?

OK and WIN button do not work

My OK and WIN button launch nothing anymore.
I have a TyTN and the OK and WIN button on the front side and on the external keyboard are like inactive.
How can I restore their default behavior ? where is it located in the registry ?

HAve you installed AEButtonPlus by any chance?
Yes, I install AEbutton. Is that the reason ?
I am going to uninstall it to try if I will have my OK and WIN button back.
I installed AEbutton for the copy/paste possibility that you can assign to a button (very useful), I will miss that, but I miss my 2 buttons even more.
I uninstalled AEButton, and made soft reset.
The OK and WIN buttons are still not working :-(
I have just installed ButtonMapper instead of AEButton, I now have the OK button working again !!
But the WIN button is still not working.
Anyone knows how I could get my WIN button working again ?
My OK button is fine, but my WIN button works intermittently. Sometimes it takes three or four presses to register and bring down the Start menu. In contrast, the WIN/OK combined button under the scroll wheel always works without fail. Annoying!

TBH, I'd uninstall button mapper, then run something like SKTools to clear all errant shortcuts and and notification queue entries. Then see where you go from there. Failing that, I'd recommend a hard reset.
bydandie, good idea I will have a look at sktools.
Do you know how does button handling work under the hood ?
what process is launched when I press a button ?
Good question....
I'm thinking a way to change my hard button links without installing a 3rd party software.
Is it possible modifying Registry?
Any other idea?

No, but I do know that in the past when I tried AEButtonplus, I got the same issues as you, but with an uninstall it cured it. It may be worth reinstalling AEButtonplus and then ensure within the app the the Win and OK buttons have nothing assigned to them.
I'm not sure what it calls, ,the codes look different from what is used by things such as the Soft-Key mapper

Normally the hard buttons can be found under HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Keys
There you will find a series of subkeys beginning with 40C
Each subkey correspond to a hard button. For instance on my ppc 40C1 is the calendar hard button. So try to find the subkeys related to Ok and Win buttons and change the default value by the path of the app you want to launch. By default, the hard buttons applications links can be found under
/Windows/AppButtons
Cheers,
.Fred
ps.: I don't have an OK and WIN buttons on my ppc, so maybe its different for these two...
Thanks for the information dotFred, I have had a look on the registry and in the windows folder.
You are right the linking between the application and the hard button is made here, but only for the configurable buttons that you can configure in WM5 settings/button. Unfortunately the TyTN's OK and WIN button on the front and on the side of the PocketPC are not included :-(
I'd also like a way to configure the function of the start button, and the side OK/start button. I have installed Smallmenu and would like those buttons to open it instead of opening the standard start menu.
Any ideas?
I noticed on my 8525 that when i put some programs onto my memory card it deactivated these two buttons as well. You might try uninstalling some recent programs. (the program that caused problems with me was an expired trial version of WA2 that i moved onto my card.)

Possible to re-map hold function of buttons?

I just finished installing PTTFix on my 8525 and I love it. (Thanks Sleuth255!!).
My question is this: is it possible to re-map the other 4 buttons to also add a hold function for them? i.e. When can add extra functions for holding the IE button, or the Messaging Button, or even the camera button.
If there's a registry hack for this or some way to do it please help me out, I've done numerous searches to no avail.
Thanks in Advance to anyone who can help.

it seems the reg hack can't do that for you. i've asked a similar question in a different thread and i was recommended using software such as AEButtonPlus or Vito Button Mapper. give it a try if you are interested.

Thanks, I tried Vito Button Mapper and this was exactly what I was looking for. The only bug was it changed and disabled my soft key functions in the today screen, but a simple settings change and soft reset was a quick fix.

When you go to Setting/Buttons to change your button functions, the configuration will be for default, from that drop down menu where you see "*<Default>, you need to select *<Today> and then it gives you the option to change your soft keys either back to original settings or whatever you want. The default setting seems to be <none> so thats why my soft keys did not even work before I changed them. I read about this in another thread and I was able to fix the problem.
As for the record function, I couldn't find any solution for that but I did encounter the same problem with it opening up notes.

8525 Ok button
Does the Vito ButtonMapper allow the changing of the "ok" button on the front of the 8525. I know the side "ok" button is supported, I am looking for the front ok above the End Call Button.

[Q] Annoying search button that i never use...

Is there any way to assign another function to the search button.
I haven't seen anyone change the search button...
This... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714670&page=2 ... thread has some info on reassigning the optical button. Might be a good place to start. Guessing that edits "qwerty.kl" might allow you to reassign the search too.
Hope this helps.
Thanks but i think that only works for physical keys. Please correct me if im wrong.
I found an app in the market, name I can't quite remember, search along lines of "button assign" I think. Had it on 2.1 to try n hack up a way to lock phone. So search the market, its there.

It's called Button Shortcut. The icon is a grey camera. It can't replace the search button but you can assign apps to open on long press.
Here's your points as promised. Im still searching for an answer

This... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936 ...thread has even more info on edits to qwerty.kl (yeah, different name on the Hero).
Yeah so after an awesome two hours of learning adb stuff and searching for guides on the keys for the aria (that were never found) has thrown me at another brick wall. because the keys that perform the search function have been remapped to the camera function but still no change after reboot and all. Someone wanting optical sleep wake had said he or she had to change the key number also which confused me. why would you need another key number? how does that work the phone should only know one key to relate to the functions not a psuedo key or a hidden key. All i have changed in the qwerty.kl is keys 127 and 217 (which are the same digits just moved around maybe something maybe nothing...) from SEARCH to CAMERA. this is ridiculous.
I've found that "in-app wifi toggle" by oliver on the msrket allows wifi toggling by holding down the search button. I find that its useful enough to keep.
One feature i miss from win mo is the customization of hw buttons.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Tasker has an option that can reassign the function of long pressing the search button. You can make it launch an app, direct dial a contact, change wallpaper, turn on WiFi. You can even make it do a series of events, including all of those I mentioned.

I use the "Quick Settings" app from the market. It utilizes the long press search button. It allows you toggle wifi, data, brightness, volume, bluetooth, etc, in app. Its handy if you wanna switch something on or off without exiting what you're currently doing.
weird.. i like the search button.
finds my contacts quick, or jumps to a google web search.
or jumps right to search when in twitter. to each his own.

[Q] is it possible to switch key functions

Hello everyone.
Last time my touchscreen stopped working. I figured out that every time i use 'end call key' my touch screen is not responding.
Question : Is it possible to switch key fundions? I mean... for example i want to make 'home' key my 'end call key' and vice versa. And if it is possible then how i can do it?
Check out Button Savior. I don't know about remapping hardware keys but this can give you software controls to get around it. There are also a tonne of screen lock widgets that could work, and some ROMs even have it built into quick settings on the notification drawer or the softkeys on ICS+ ROMs.

There used to be an app called button remapper on the play store but I can't find it now!!
Well anyway you can change the button mappings by editing the kepad layout file in /system/usr/keylayout/ folder.
Their will be a few their so you will have to figure out which one to edit for your rom.
Mine is htcleo_keypad.kl.
You will need a root explorer to do this, just open with a text editor!
Make sure to write down the mappings before starting then you can swap them about.
I am not sure but I think the power button isn't changeble but you can assign power to another key.
Ah, I was wondering if I had just gone crazy because I thought I remembered an app by that name but I couldn't find it.
