Avoid Road Block - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

In tom tom 3 there is an option to Avoid Road block. I have never actually tried this but what does it actually do?
Does it just avoid the road you are currently on and re-join your destination further on or..what?
Also there is an option to "Skip Next Drive By" Where I come from a Drive by is something from Boyz n' the Hood!
ANy ideas what these two do before I test them out and end up paying the chancellor a small fortune in petrol costs!!!
thx

Is there a way of finding out the Direction of a Wireless R.

Is there a way to determin were exactly the Wireless router is? Some sorta software that works a bit like a Radar? to show where the signals coming from?
I don't think only software would do the trick.
I think you have to shield your wifi in all directions but one (I don't have any idea how) and then by turning you could find the direction and so triangulate the position.
Or by finding the perimeter of the circle where you do/don't have signal, the source would be in the center , not calculating buildings/walls.
Ive picked up wifi points and it would be handy to find out who im nickin off!
im not certain about this but my mate has a wifi card and he sues a program called wififofum or summit like that, and that appears to show which direction the router is
I would say, that to find the place where the signal is coming from you will need directional antena. Best would be to do it from three different places and then mark those three direction as lines on the paper map... The point, where those three lines meet is THE PLACE you are looking for.
buzz
A pringles tube with a hole cut, put over the wifi card makes it directinal enough to get a good idea what direction the ap is in.
You look a bit of a prat walking around with it though.
Google for "Cantenna".
Use something like wififorum to get a signal strength.

Bluetooth Ranged Pair Finder

Hey there Developers...
I would like to ask if any of you guys know of a PPC applications that can calculate how near or far a Bluetooth pair is.
Tell me its cheesy but let me give you an example:
My sister and I do groceries and we split ways. The Hypermarket is huge and we split ways, she makes her way to the veggies, I make my way to the booze section. After sometimes she is gone and I need to give her a call. So I need a way to find her using my PPC through ranged BT "pinging" to indicate if she is near by or not. Is there a software or is there anyway that this can be developed?
What if your sister has her phone in her pocket/bag? Then the ping won't be accurate, since it'll take more time to discover her. :?

if i was at the booze section... i wouldn't want to find my sister!
hehe
[email protected] Wroet.
Anyways, I was just thinking if it would be possible. I mean basically I was thinking how the PPC would determine the distance between the 10m radius and also to which direction. But if it is possible... The it be a great tool.

T-Mobile MDA (Wizard) GPS

New to the forums, and betting this is a stupid Question, but I was wondering if there was anyway to tap into the GPS locater(built in for emergency calls such as 911) and use that for a GPS application, If the Wizard even has one built in, I would imagine that it does, but anways wondering if its possible, and if anyone has any incite into how to use this/turn it on?
There's no GPS in the wizard.

Emergency services can locate your phone fairly accurately using triangulation from the gsm phone masts, using network data. There was a company selling a tracking service such as this for mobile users a while back, but I forget the details.
yeah ran into that service a while back, but the main way to get to it was to buy two handsets and pay for their cheap data service and put the other handset in someones car or whatever and use the 1st handset to track them...
I think that navizon.com has a program like that. theres a trial version for free. Doesnt google maps also use that technology?
hmm try google map 2.0 they show u wat ur location is without GPS
try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=349188
I've tried both of these apps and both aren't worth a crap to me. They get my location in the right state, heck even the right city...almost. But I can't get it to be consistent let alone even half right.
I tried em both out and would like to know what I have been doing wrong since everyone else says that they are "great."
Thanks,
Ivan
It's already been said, but get Google Map 2.0...I installed it a few days ago, and it's not bad. I'm usually within 2000ft. of the calculated location.

The only thing you did wrong was expect triangulation to work like you're watching CSI. In the real world, there is signal bounce, interference from trees, buildings, and other radio transmissions, and a whole host of other nameless error-creating problems. Radio triangulation is severely limited, but considering this sort of feature wasn't even available as a free application (much less being built into a mapping software as robust as GMaps) until VERY recently, it's pretty good, if you don't have GPS. You can buy a dongle to attach to your MDA, or you can suck it up, and deal with generally inaccurate location.
Trying it again...I thought that I had 2.0 but maybe not...I'll let you know either way how it comes out this time.

Ok much better...however it is still like 4 miles!!! off.
Does it update when in travel or how/when will it become more accurate??
Thanks agian,
Ivan
Google Maps 2 has "My location"
I dunno if you knew but Google Maps has been updated now and it offers My location - which is pretty close what GPS does. It gets your position through cellular towers and then it locates you within half a mile if I'm not mistaken...
Try it and c if it works 4 u

Actually google maps DOES NOT use triangulation..it will just show ur position based on a single cell tower and the signal strength being calculated by your phone..
So I tried my Google Maps 2.0 on the fly today...
It told me that it wouldn't work because I did not have a "data connection" and that I needed to contact my "service provider" to be able to utilize that function... (Or some crap like that)
What am I doing wrong now??
Thanks guys,
Ivan

Navizon ... at the risk of sounding like an ad.

This may sound like I'm just spamming the board with an ad or whatever, but this really works.
Here is their email to send to friends.
I would like to introduce you to Navizon:
http://www.navizon.com
Navizon is a wireless positioning system that works a little bit like a GPS, only that it uses Cellular Towers and Wifi access points instead of satellites. In addition to being a wireless position system, Navizon offers cool features like the Directions, Buddy finder, Geotags and many more...
This software relies on a community of users who contribute data to the system (WiFi and Cellular towers) when they have a GPS device. And the cool thing is that we can earn money doing it with the Navizon reward system:
http://www.navizon.com/navizon_rewards.asp
I'm already using it and you could make money too with it if you're interested. All you need is to install it on your phone and have Navizon connected to your GPS. Every Wifi access points that you pass, every cell tower that you log will mean money in your pocket. So if you have a phone that is compatible with this software, you should really check it out.
If you plan on registering, please do so by clicking on the link below:
http://my.navizon.com/Webapps/UserAdmin/register.aspx?referral_code=5B5A595B575A
That way, I can also earn some referral points since I'm the one who introduced you to the system ;-)
End of email from Navizon
So before you call me greedy for posting my referral link, or calling this spam, try it out. I got 12000 points in the first day. I have 38904 now, after four days. I realize that as the data in navizon's database is filled up, the points will be coming slower, since the first discovery of an AP is worth more than subsequent discoveries, but it is still worth it. Remember also that new APs go in everyday. I was absolutely SHOCKED at how mny there are.
After all, this is meant for those without GPS to be able to use it like GPS, but more accurately than Google Maps for Mobile. (I tried the service without my GPS on, and it locked on me within 200 feet, much better than GMM) So, if you don't have GPS and want to use the service, you'll have to pay $24.95 per month, but it works really well. If you want to help build and improve the service, they'll pay you for it.
I wish I hadn't told my wife about this, so I could use the money for whatever I want to, but I had to justify the purchase of the bluetooth GPS unit. ($25 from CompUSA during clearance... was a $250 unit from Motorola! I should have bought all of them and sold some) Anyway, to keep her off my back, I can only spend half of it on XDA.
In addition, any points I get from users signing up with my reference number will go entirely to XDA.(and the ROM/.cab chefs, of course)
So it all comes back to you in the end. You lose no points by using this link, I just get more to spend on this forum. Ttran is getting the first chunk for his awesome ROM I'm using now.
http://my.navizon.com/Webapps/UserAdmin/register.aspx?referral_code=5B5A595B575A
Any questions, just ask. I can even try to help you set up your bluetooth GPS.
Now up to 54000 points. (That's $100) My thanks to those who've signed up, and as long as you keep it running, those points will add up. Just take it with you everywhere, and don't forget to start the WiFi on the phone comm manager.

Igo problems!!

I work in edmonds, wa and it is really getting annoying that igo cannot recognize the major highway in my city. When i go to find address and try to input hwy 99 it simply does not recognize this. Is this a problem with igo or the teleatlas maps i'm using? Would the Navteq maps be any better?
Also, I'm currently running igo at this very moment, and my screen is "flashing" on and off. While i was driving earlier on the freeway, the screen turned off and voice announced "gps disconnected" and it didn't reconnect.
If there is anyway to fix these problems help is much appreciated...
uninstall igo.
go into igo8 on your SD card and delete save
save is the user info. this will force the igo8 to reinstall again. if you recently flashed a rom, it can cause problems with igo8.
hope this helps. you can dump igo and run garmin or run both like me!
Just run your search on here to make sure that the address is correct and in the system. http://www.navteq.com/

So is "hwy 99" valid? Is it not "Highway 99" and is "Highway 99" really a valid destination? For example here, Interestate 75 would not be a valid destination because there's no 'addresses' there, only cross-streets. Honestly never tried to route to it in iGO, but something to consider..
I primarily use Waze + common sense (since it's not routing well for most places yet due to the data they have), and a TomTom One when I really need routing. I gave up on running TomTom or iGO in my Tilt 2. They work fine, but make the phone overheat unless you keep the AC on and aren't all that robust.. iGO crashes randomly, TomTom less so but it's no better than my TomTom One I got for $50.
So i think i found a way to keep the screen on and the gps connected. I went to settings-device-power management and selected "always on". Do you other igo users have it setup this way as well?
Regarding the address problems. Yes, hwy 99 is definately a valid destination. My only concern is if it doesn't recognize hwy 99, i wonder how many other addresses it won't recognize. Again, does anyone using igo notice differences between the tele atlas and navteq maps?
Does HWY 99 have an alternate name? For example, I95 here in Virginia is also known as Shirley G Memorial Highway...I did look up Redmond WA on my Igo and did search fo 99...couldn't find it, just a named (not numbered) highway.
Using the navteq tool that rory posted, I was able to search/find several address along highway 99 in edmonds, including the Red Dragon Casino at 21917 Hwy 99
Edmonds, Washington 98036
So, any navteq-based solution would be able to find you addresses there

well my real intention was just confirm that "highway 99" is the true "addressable" name for that piece of blacktop...but yeah, it does sorta point to the fact that igo may not be the best option for you, no matter what else you end up with
