Hi all
Thanks to this fantastic community, my WM6 user experience has considerably improved in the past few months; the only thing which tickles me a little is that there does not seem to be any project for a finger friendly, nicely animated E-mail client application.
Now google led me to this great article about the MAPI library, which provides an extended wrapper taking care of most of the functionalities of an e-mail client, not standalone per-say, but as kind of a proxy for outlook (i.e. pocket outlook). Now the good news is that the library supports C++, .NET and... the .net compact framework (with a little tweaking)!
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/IP/CMapiEx.aspx
I've tested it in Windows forms as well as in the .NETCF and it is really good.
Now the problem is that in .NET, I have no idea how to create finger-friendly forms.. I can recognize gestures to flip from one form to another, but the native controls themselves are ugly and not really customizable. They look really poor vs. the fantastic scrollable lists used by Chad, Tene etc. As for the animations, that's no problem.
So here are the questions:
- Anybody heard about 3rd party open source .netCF components such as listboxes, datagrids etc which support a high level of formatting, or native finger scrolling handling?
- If not, do we have any C++ developer here who could maybe take advantage of this library, or at least have a quick look?
Cheers

I'm using it in a mixed c#/vb .net 2005 project, works like a champ. . .
the only thing I'd recommend is to use doublebuffering on any images, as they tend to flicker when you scroll.
If you have a compiled version of cemapi that'll work in cf2.0 let me know, I've been killing myself to find a control that will do a synchronize (like "Microsoft.WindowsMobile.PocketOutlook.MessagingApplication.Synchronize()") without actually launching the messaging app.
The only thing I've found so far is the mobile in the hand. . .but they want $300 for it. No more community edition in 3.0 (and the 2.0 community edition doesn't have synchronizing anyhow)
I've been checking out the stuff on the web about Linux on the shift, found these, pretty interesting. This ubuntu even detects the motion rolling from left to right, and he makes the cursor move around the screen by tilting the unit. Also has csreen rotation working:
http://mobilitysite.com/2008/07/ubuntu-in-a-htc-shift/
another one:

"Once Ubuntu is installed, you get a menu at boot time which lets you choose which operating system to boot, Vista or Ubuntu. Surprisingly most of the hardware is auto-detected by ubuntu, and almost everything works out of the box:
* Audio is working, mute and volume control works using the Fn keys.
* SD card reader is working.
* Adjusting the screen backlight works with the proper Fn keys.
* Webcam is working (you can test it with gstreamer-properties).
* CPU frequency scaling works by default too on the Intel Stealy 800Mhz CPU, you can monitor it by enabling the cpufreq gnome pannel.
* ACPI is working, you can get the CPU temperature using the sensors-applet.
* Screen resolution works at 800×480. I have not tried higher resolutions yet.
* Bluetooth is working.
However there are a few things that require some extra work in order to have them working properly."

its pof old work! it works only with 8.04 but once updated the system, most pof works will not work.
Hi
I installed Ubuntu last night as I can't get any other version of Windows (except the memory and space hogging Vista) to install at the moment.
I was very impressed with how much DID work without any fiddling and now I shall spend another few evenings reading exactly how to make the rest of it work.
I'm hoping to be able to then get rid of Vista (but not off the X partition JUST IN CASE!) and regain some space, but I think that I need Windows to run some software for my OU degree course... rather important given this was my excuse for buying a SHIFT (so I'd always be able to work on my degree regardless of where I was (or so my other half thinks!)).
However I know NOTHING about Linux and am somewhat daunted by it but also looking forward to getting a more "hands on" with the Shift and some more computing experience under my belt.
I am rather excited by the concept of actually being able to use things like the g-sensor. Why would HTC put it in then give you nothing to make it work under Vista? Kinda sums up their decision-process when creating the Shift, if you ask me...
Ubuntu on an external USB hard disk also works as described. Wireless doesn't work; this is noted elsewhere in this thread: the 8686 drivers need to be found, compiled, and installed; any detailed pointers would be much appreciated. 640x480 resolution (only) is a major drawback, as control panels come up with essential buttons off screen, and there doesn't seem to be any trick to move them on screen. It boots much faster and it is much more responsive than VISTA ... I would make Ubuntu permanent on the Shift platform if I could get wireless and the resolution control working.

If you go to POF's website (link in the second link in the first message of this thread I think) there is an installer packet that should make WIFI work although being a Linux novice, it doesn't for me! It seems to do what it's meant to do as I can see stuff happening in the terminal window but nothing actually happens or changes after it's done...
I agree that the resolution is a BIG problem at 800 x 640 or whatever it is under Ubuntu 8.04 and hope someone has a solution soon PLEASE!
for Resolution, you can go and reconfig your Xserver yourself. Never used to get it to work on ubuntu but on gentoo no problem at all.
All other pof stuff will work with smal adjustments !! just read the right threads.

I think I did well to get as far as I did as a Noob actually (and a girl one at that!). I have no problem with people saying "search the forum" to people who ask simple questions like "how do I access SnapVue" but when someone's clearly done their research and is still struggling, it's very frustrating. I've just spent nearly ALL weekend on this forum (and google) and got as far as making Ubuntu 8.10 work as I wanted except Wifi and screen resolution, given no one else has mentioned any of these necessities working on 8.10 as far as I can remember and the fact I know nothing about Linux!! Proof in point; your first comment about the Xserver - I don't even know what that is (though I've probably been fiddling in it)
When I have the time I'll start a new thread with all my wonderful findings so it's all in one place - but I have to earn a living and feed the family so it's not high on my agenda this week. I'm due some time off work, so will aim to get it done then (like painting the kitchen and making curtains for my daughter's room...!)
I can upload older ubuntu 8.04 someplace. With this version all pofs configs and hacks work normally.
Hello together!
I'm also working on getting a current Linux up and running on the Shift (Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.28) and found these problems/"solutions":
- Display: I believe that's a combined hard- and software problem. The display doesn't report its correct capabilities and the driver doesn't handle interpolated resolutions that well (I modified the driver for this). I already mailed this to the xorg mailing list, but I didn't get an answer (perhaps I missed some information like driver version)
- Wifi: The old Marvell driver (from their website) isn't compatible with 2.6.28 anymore, but there is a new one in the kernel itself (called libertas), that only needs the firmware in /lib/firmware (check out this git repo if you need to). But at least in my case the chip is still not working, cause the SD controller is buggy and unknown. But I'm talking with some Devs who are willing to help.
- Touchscreen: You need this module to glue htcpen and the xserver together. Then it works like in Pof's manual.
All in all: I believe in having a fully working Linux on the Shift somewhen
Greetings,
Sven
Oaky guys:
Xserver = your grafical environment
Yea u're right the display doesnt send useable stuff to the Soft but you can hard overwrite the combinations of wich ModeLines are used, its a bit more advanced linux stuff but as far as you dont try to learn you wont get it .... i acctually use a 1024 x 600 is possible and i use it !
I Can give my x config to you here if you like to ! (When i am home
sorry for my roughness but i am not a linux pro just advanced PC user and i was able to do such stuff also !!
Greets
Appreciated!
If you could post your config when you have time I would be grateful (as would others!)
@Neutron83:
What version of the intel driver are you using? I'm using 2.4.1 (and newer) and I wasn't able to override the setting no matter what I did. But please share your config. I'd like to give it a chance.
Greeting,
Sven
please, can someone confirm me that ubuntu can do 1024x600 on htc shift?
i would like to buy one of them but i'm not sure about 1024x600 under linux.
thanks a lot
someone posted that xorg_conf can be modified in someway to get bigger resolution. no one have posted working config for this yet. If someone could post it, it would be great.
Shift's screen is 800x480 pixels (http://www.htc.com/europe/faqs.aspx?p_id=60&cat=0&id=45486.) Bundled software (~\htc\resolution.exe and ~\htc\ResolutioLauncher.exe) switches between native 800x480 and emulated 1024x600.
Any progress on a linux driver for the Marvell 8686 wifi card?
Hi @All,
maybe somewhere experts of you can build a script again for Ubuntu 9 users, the most of them I think can work with Linux, but the most are Windows users (like me) and are overstrained with modding aditional Hardware into Ubuntu ;-)
How's everyone going with Ubuntu on the Shift? Samstables?
I'm downloading and installing the current wubi to put ubuntu on with vista as a dual boot to see how much works out of the box and how much I can get working mucking around (low level linux user here )
hmm... my shift is a dustcover at the moment...
pls give me image iso ubuntu on a works drivers!!
Hi,
I usually post in the "global dev" and not a device specific forum, but as I recently got a Diamond, I've been experimenting a bit with OpenGL.
For the curious, you can download an opengl enabled build of ImageViewer using HW opengl of our beloved device.
You can find it here:
www.pocketcm.com/daily.php
Of course it require real accelerated driver (which come with the device by default if I'm right), and it's still experimental, it seems to works decently until a certain number of images (texture) are loaded.
In practice, on my device, it's A LOT faster than the software version and it makes it as nice to use as... on my old HTC Touch phone.
Enjoy!
Cool program for an experimental version.... i like the way it rotates the image
just wanna let you know GREAT APP .... im sure ur putting in a lotta features...i was wondering if u can make a coverflo activated on the rotation of the phone...it'll be uber cool...thanx
nice idea..
tried it on my XDA Flame which has Goforce 5500 GPU and it does not run!
log file says "cant initialize opengl"
(of course we do have opengl drivers official on Flame)
please fix !!
works on my TP, but often gets stuck...
Hi, I never did that, but I was playing to Anthelion 2 on my PPC and I thank that it could be great to port Homeworld 1 or Cataclysm to the PPC, and I would like to know how to do that, I think that I could "recompiler" it, but I don't know how, and I would like to know if a tutorial has been created somewhere on the net?...
I'm not sure if it would be even technically possible. Well, the newest pdas _might_ be powerful enough to run something like HW1 but i'm not sure if it's such a good idea. Did you try to run homeworld in 640x480 resolution? Most of the time you'll see ships as groups of two to eight pixels. Now imagine it all squished on a phone three-inch screen: try ordering your corvettes to smash that annoying bomber on a screen that small I think that a bit better idea would be porting really old games, that were designed to run in VGA or even lower resolutions (SubCulture, Command&Conquer, I-War, Dark Forces are some of the titles i'd pay for ).
Anyway, back to porting subject.
First of all you would need the source code of the program you want to port - in case of homewrld1 it's not a problem.
Secondly, you would have to make sure that all libraries (graphic, sound, input, etc) used by a game have windows mobile/windowsCE versions. Again, homeworld1 seems lucky since it has been ported to SDL - a multiplatform opensource graphic/sound/input library.
But that's where good news end. Porting a game is not just a matter of grabbing the PC version source and recompiling it. If it was as easy, we would have hundreds of PC games already ported You need considerable programming skills to actually create a port because usualy not all libraries used by a game a compatible with WindowsCE. An example - the opensource version of homeworld uses OpenGL for graphic rendering. The pocket version would have to use OpenGL's "little brother" - OpenGLES. As far as i know, they're not 100% identical, so to put it simply, you would have to make the game talk in OGLES language, instead of standard OGL. And doing changes in graphic rendering routines usually breaks something else, so you'd have to go and fix it.
I'm not trying to discourage you here but i'd suggest learning to program for WindowsCE (or at least for PC) _before_ attempting to port anything - doing it the other way around will be just a waste of time and a source of frustration.
There are some development resources that can help start the adventure with programming here on xda. You could also search for some general C/C++ tutorials targeting PC's. If you consider getting into programming, i suggest checking out SDL - Many games use it, and thanks to this library you can skip the OS-specific part of coding and get right to the fun stuff - a program that actually does/displays anything For an even easier start, you might want to check out QuickCG - a SDL wrapper simplifying the coding even further.
Oki, thanks for your answer, I've a friend who is learning to program in C++, so, I'll ask him if he can help me to do that, it would be great to have this game on a PPC (perhaps the Diamond, because it has D3D and OpenGL Drivers, or of the iPhone, but I guess that the programming language is not the same as the PPC...
[EDIT] STARCRAFT would be great to, and easier to port on PPC, because of his age and that he uses 2d Graphisms...
You should look into the stratagus engine.

Envy TouchPad NagashMod
Envy TouchPad is an open source project.
I found the source on the web some time ago, I don't know where or from who.
Please if you are the original author or if you know some reference tell me.
I modded this software from source (with visual studio 2012) to add some new features:
- Gestures for windows 10 (switch desktop with 3 finger left-right, show all desktops.. etc..)
- Options to disable Scrolling (keep driver original scrolling)
- Reverse scrolling
Original EnvyTouchPad features:
- Enable two fingr scrolling (vertical and horizontal)
- Settings for scrolling: speed, acceleration, inertia.
- Can scroll background windows (like mac! Windows 10 introduce this feature but won't works with original synaptics driver scrolling)
- Can scroll vertical and horizontal concurrently (without raise the hand, like multitouch)
- Set action for tapping with 1, 2 and 3 fingers.
- Set actions for 3 finger scroll (up, down, right, left)
- etc..
This software should works with all SYNAPTICS TUCHPADS !!
I'm using it on my lenovo yoga 13.
NB: if you want to use these feature correctly, you have to disable the same feature offered by original touchpad driver.
NB: YOU NEED Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 x86 (from microsoft, link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30679# )
Thanks to the original author :good:

I don't know, you have to check if your touchpad driver is based on Synaptics.
Usually touchpads are based on Synaptics or Elan.
You can simply download the release.zip and try to start the software.
There is not an installer, just launch and see.
If your PC has synaptics drivers the software will run, either will launch an error message.
NB: the program start as tray icon, as shown in the screen attached
Let me know if it works!

Hi, your tool is fantastic, thank you very much. In the next release is possible for you to add the option (in the actions section) to launch also an executable of my choice (i can pick it...) and the windows 10 action bar?
Thank you again.

Hello.
Can this work under Windows 7? I don't love Windows, but my studies and future work would require it until I become a mad genious that improves the electronics software and others or I get totally insane. Whatever happens sooner, probably the first!
Are you planning to submit it in GitHub/GitLab? Maybe others could be interested. You would be surprised how ****ty most trackpad software configuration is...
I find trackpads quite cumbersome, but I managed to configure a it my way. Most people would probably hate how I use it,, because I reversed it.
I need to use trackballs and mechanical keyboards because of RSI risks, I love them too . I would sell my body to have a builtin mechanical keyboard and a very hires trackball, but I'm fatty so there's no hope to get at least the MSI Titan
I'm trying to study electronics, maybe I someday will learn that, CAM and CNC to do a custom design. I don't care if it's more bulky, but a mechanical keyboard (I love Model M, but that would be insane even for me), a custom very hires trackball (maybe mixing both could be a good idea, like the early Steam controller) or even 3D controller, a tablet an a lot better battery and some extras related to electronics and more
But I have o learn a lot before be able to do crazy projects like that...
thanks a lot for your interesting software.
I like this, however I like the built in driver config for scrolling with two fingers. I have to check the "Disable two finger scrolling management" box to get it to work right, but when I reboot it doesn't save the config.
Any ideas? Good work though. I love having three finger gestures to change desktops.
Hi
This works, MSI GL62 6QF synaptics touchpad
but the problem is:
the 3 fingers gesture are programmed to work if the fingers move in a parallel way
this isn't all easy, could you add the option to use this with fingers not moving in a parallel way?
for example, if I move my finger horizontally while placing them next to each other, I would like that to be right/lift gesture
now it doesn't do anything unless i put my fingers in a vertical way
Could you please do that?
Is this the source https://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=10e73hc18ierh
Awesome man, works perfectly. Was looking for it from a long time. Thanks a lot.
@nagash91 Any hopes to release the source code in GitHub?
Anyone interested in resuscitating this project? Open Source drivers for Windows are cool too

This is an incredible little gem. Now my Vaio touchpad compares to my MacBook!!!
The app could use some speed optimization (a bit slow to start on boot, medium effect on boot according to task manager).
Also, a more generic name like Synaptics Gestures would be nice
Can you turn this into a native app? Without visual C runtime. I think this is what’s needed to fix performance.

Actually I didn't created this app from scratch: I just modified the Envy TouchPad code that I found on-line some years ago (this is the reason of the name ).
I made this mod for myself and for my brother's notebook, later I decided to share on XDA.
I don't think I'll convert this in a native C++ application (don't have the time and I almost don't use windows anymore).
BTW with the public source code, anyone who want is free to do that
Thanks. I expect more development
