unlocking SX56 problems - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

hey there i have a problem unlocking the SX56 its a ATT device witch i upgraded via the Siemens Website to the 2003 version,
now when i use the tool xdaunlock i always get an error:
error getting unlock code
anyone has some help on that
here is the info
ROM Version: A.30.09 ENG
ROM date: 01/01/04
Radio Version: A.33.02
Protocol Version: 1.3.3
Model: PW10B1
please help me !!!

XDAunlock tool doesn't work with WM2003 ... you have to down grade your ROM to PPC2002 ... try to cook any 3.17 based ROM from the kitchen here and it's better to flash your ROM with the SER v1.2 which will ulock your xda with the first reboot

thx for the info
would you have some info what SER 1.2 is or some step by step instructions
Anton

GSM Band change
Hi,
I have an unlocked AT&T Siemens XDA I :
ROM : A.30.09 ENG
ROM date: 01/01/04
Radio : A.20.10
Protocol version: 324e4
Under Settings>phone> i cannot find the tab found in other versions where I can switch the GSM band between 900 and 1900.
what should I do about that? is there anyway to switch band? or do I have to upgrade/downgrade the OS?
The phone is working with both T-mobile and AT&T networks, but I will need to use it in Europe and Egypt (Vodafone).
hey Biso007 , I hope you have the answer
thank you

Band Switching in Windows Mobile
The tab used to switch the bandwidth, 900/1900 MHz GSM, was removed in Windows Mobile as the software interface with the radio stack unit/RSU automatically will switch from the Americas' 1900 MHz to the international 900 MHz and vice verse when travelling to other countries. My friend has an unlocked Siemens SX56 Pocket PC Phone with AT&T Wireless(hopefully soon to be Cingular Wireless) as the service provider, took the SX56 over to Ireland with him on a business trip and used a prepaid SIM without any problems.

As raycaroll70 said, band switching is being done automatic between 900 and 1900 for B devices, and 900 to 1800 for A devices ... this is true in A30.0x ROMs from AT&T
In T-mobile ROMs it's still being done through the phone settings but only for B devices 900/1900. It's also worthy to be mentioned that the RSU is a significant factor in this issue ... I think A20.x does this auto switching, but I didn't try it with 6.2x.0x RSUs

SER v1.2 cannot unlock WM2003 version radio stack 6.25 or A33.
The SER V1.2 is absolutely obsolete.

Thx for this already known info, but I expect the people coming to this forum for "FREE" advices ... then if it doesn't help they can seek a help with a charge if needed.
Note: even if SER v1.2 is obsolete (which is not true!), no one said it should be kept to be used as the final ROM (even tho it's still working fine) ... it's just a transitional state for unlocking ... and for the RSU issue, many people here down graded the RSU then unlock then upgrade back to a recent RSU ... and they did it with no charge as well

Flashing Radio Version

Having problems with Radio Version 4.21 from England, ie the phone will not work (I am in Australia). The phone was working OK until I performed the upgrade
It has been suggested that I install Radio Version 6.12 from T-mobile and I have downloaded the file from Yorch, this comes up as an nbf file and I wonder if I should flash it as I can not find RSUupgrade.exe. Any suggestions ?
Chris
You downloaded the wrong file go back to Yorch's site and look under Upgrades and download "USA T-mobile Latest Radio Stack (Unofficial)
RU 6.24.00".

dont Australia use 900/1800 like europe ?
if that is the case the us RSU would ruin the phone even more

Radio Stack for Australia
Wed Nov 12, 2003 13:10
Hello Qman,
Thank you for your reply! But great news here as I have managed to get my RSU version to work in Australia.
My carrier is Optus and SIM card is fine.
Basically by trying most RSU versions I wasn’t able to get the phone to work. Funny thing is I tried the RSU version for the O2, which is supporting here in Australia but to no avail! I ended up using the new T- Mobile for the US and works like a dream have fully signal as well.
New version is RSU 6.24.
Cheers Erebus,

Further to my problems I upgraded to the T-mobile 2003 ROM an their latest Radio stack 6.24 and all is working OK.
I had sent the XDA to Melbourne (Australia) to the accredited Service company (Accord) and they had sent it back saying that it was buggered. I had some very helpful advice from Peter and Joe and have everything working fine. Curiously, when I had XDA 1.2 and the T-mobile Radiostack the phone kept crashing after reboot. Since upgrading to T-Mobile 4.00.21 ENG and Radio version 6.24.00 all works well.
I did try to download some Medical software (MIMS) and thisd has proven to be a bit of a problem. The tech dude at MIMS was not too impressed with Pocket-PC 2003
Chris
Great, glad to hear it all worked out ok! 8)
Seems R 6.24 works in many wheres ... I put it on a friend's XDA and it works now (Egypt 900/1800) ... just wonder if it's wise to go for ROM 4.00.21 or keep the 4.00.11 .... I heared that you can't change the ROM after T-mobile ROMs ... is that true ?

As far as not being able to change ROM's after upgrading to a T-Mobile WM2003 ROM, it will still work but you must use the SD card boot loader upgrade method.

Help needed, this morning I flash my XDA with USA T-mobile Latest Radio Stack (Unofficial) but not working for my GSM 900. So I flash it back to O2 Latest Official Radio Stack RU 4.21 but it flash until 83% stop forever. So i do a soft rest. Then my XDA can't boot. Can someone help me out on this method? I'm in Malaysia. Using 900/1800 bandwidth.
Hi ...
If you have taken SD backup before upgrading, then go for bootloader menu, press Calendar button, and turn off the Radio part. Try to flash your XDA back to the original ROM and RSU, and then perform a hard reset.
In case you didn't, try the Qtek offical RSU 3.25 from http://www.carrierdevices.com.au/downloads.php?region=Asia Pacific. It works good for Asian operators.
Good luck
Problem FIXED... Thanks for the big help.

more help with xda

hello again folks ...
want to say thanks again for all the help so far .. upgrade went well ..
i went from :
rom version: 3.14.17 ENG
rom date: 10/11/02
radio version : 4.17
to the upgrade :
rom version: 3.17.03 ENG
rom date: 5/15/03
radio version : 4.17
courtesy of www.yorch.net 8)
it was fairly painless ... however the phone still can not pick up a signal ..
also note with upgrade i have been able to switch GSM band from 900/1800 to 900 or 1900 successfully.. but, still can not find t-mobile US as a default setting ...
perhaps i should have cooked and installed one of the following upgrades ? :?
4.00.10 ENG T-Mobile US
or
4.00.16 ENG T-Mobile US
i was hesitant because it indicates once the above mentioned ROM is installed you can not switch to any other ROM using programme A .
my device model no. PW10A1
does this apply to me?
or perhaps i need to udate the radio stack ?? any direction would be great .. thanks again folks !
jason
use 4.00.16 ENG T-Mobile US then once loaded onto xda go into the bootloader (hold power button down while soft restting) then press the calendar (right hand) button and set it to 900/1900mhz
then wait for it to do what it has to do then softreset again.....
then load the phone up with sim in go into phone then options and click on the band tab and select 1900mhz
softrest after if it doesnt pick up signal after then the aversions are not kinda tri band but if it does post up then we will know the answer for deffinate thing is though the radio version is built for 900/1800 not 900/1900 so i dont think itll work but you can try
my device model no. PW10A1
does this apply to me?

If the H/W of the device is A type then it's 900/1800. So, unless you have a 900 MHz signal it will not work. Switching the band from phone settings will have no effect unless with proper H/W and RSU version.
ok fellas ...
i went from :
rom version: 3.17.03 ENG
rom date: 5/15/03
radio version : 4.17
to the upgrade :
rom version: 4.00.16 ENG T-Mobile US
rom date: 7/10/03
radio version : 4.17.00
courtesy of www.yorch.net
however the phone still can not pick up a signal ..
with upgrade i have not been able to switch GSM band from 900/1800 to 900 or 1900 successfully through the wallaby bootloader (after changes are made i can not get out of bootloader without doing a hard reset) :? also note the xda developers band switch tool is also present but reads error :?
also note :!:
before the upgrade
my device model no. PW10A1
after upgrade
my device model no. PW10B1
not sure if im getting any closer to the solution but im still happy at this point i havent burned up the unit ...
perhaps it is still an issue of the radio version 4.17.00 (which is the only thing i havent fooled with yet)
any thoughts on trying the radio upgrades from www.yorch.net (under upgrades) ??
if this doesnt kill me it will surely make me stronger ... i will throw a party with beer for everyone if we can get this turkey running !!
thanks again folks !
If you can read a B type on your device that means your H/W supports 900/1900 MHz. To be more sure, check the avaialble options at the GSM menu from the boot loader (Power + soft reset then Calendar button).
If it does have the 1900 MHz option, I would recommend to go for a full upgrade using the latest TMO ROM 4.01.00. It contains RSU 6.24.01 and it works perfectly well for me tho I have 900/1800 network.
Here is the link: ftp://tmobile:[email protected]:21
Be careful and good luck ...
It may be important to note at this point that the OS ROM version really doesn't have much to do with whether or not the phone gets a signal. XDA I is either 900/1800 (PW10A) or 900/1900 (PW10B). (Please note that this model number should be taken from the sticker on the back, not from what the OS says it is.)
If you have a 900/1800 phone, it will not do 900/1900, and vice-versa. Exceptions are said to exist, probably in places where a 1900 provider is really low in the band (or an 1800 provider really high), but this is not recommended and unlikely to work very well.
Band switching is done manually with an extra tab in the Phone Options page between 900 and 1900 in US ROMs, or automatically between 900/1800 in all others. There is also a band-switch in the bootloader, which always offers all possibilities (900, 1900, and 900/1800). After selecting the correct band for your phone, you may need to hard-reset with the SIM removed a few times before the phone 'understands' it is to use another band.
If you want a tri-band phone, get an XDA II. The XDA II by the way comes with vastly improved radio performance. Unlike the original XDA, I can use it in areas with not-so-great coverage.
>any thoughts on trying the radio upgrades from www.yorch.net (under >upgrades) ??
Yeap you're needed of a Radio Stack upgrade, as you have seen 4.17 won't work in the US. So I suggest you upgrade to the AT&T or the T-Mobile stack.

Thx Peter Poelman so much for this great info, but my original Qtek 1010 never showed the 1900 Mhz option in the boot loader menu and it was PW10A.
Now as I replaced the main board with a one taken from a used TMO device it shows the 1900 option both in the GSM menu and in the phone settings in ROM (I 'm using 4.01.00 now) and the device type is PW10B
Does that mean that the GSM menu shows only what the device H/W can actually support, or it's part of the RSU file contents which may give a fake option of the 1900 MHz ?
Thanks again for correcting our info

Unlock PPC2003

I have searched this site (fantastic site BTW) but see a lot of conflicting statements (or at least it seems that way).
I have a TMobile MDA-I (US) PPC2003
ROM version: 4.01.16.ENG
ROM date: 02/04/04
Radio version: 6.25.02
Protocol version: 324e4
I want to keep 2003 but need to unlock the SIM. Is this possible and where is the information?
you need to "downgrade" to the SER ROM, unlock your machine, and then Restore back your ROM, or upgrade it to something else
What is the SER ROM?
what vresion to I have to downgrade it to?
Where would I find the software and exact steps?
Are they any issue with doing this?
www.xda-developers.com/SER/
or just try the unlock tool at www.xda-developers.com/XDAunlock/
Unlocking a T Mobile USA Pocket PC Phone Edition
All you have to do is call T Mobile USA's Customer Care and just tell the CSR you're going to be travelling overseas and will be using a prepaid SIM from one of the local wireless carriers over there. The CSR should be able to provide you with the unlock code provided you've had continuous wireless service with them for a minimum of 90 days and your wireless account is financially current. Cheers!
Thanks all, I like the overseas idea. Any hints as to places to travel where this is possible. I don't want to say I am going to the Bahamas (example) and have them tell me that the phone will not work there anyway.
Same Issue on PPC2003
I installed the SER and I'm still locked ("error finding unlock code"). Any ideas.

Hi
your device is locked and designed to use 900/1900 MHz networks.
if your network doesn't support 900 MHz, don't bother yourself with this device.
in case yes, try to unlock using this tool www.xda-developers.com/XDAunlock/
if doesn't work, then u have to flash ur ROM with the SER 1.2
Do not try to mislead people!
The XDA-developers unlocking Tools cannot work with USA version XDA (GSM 900/1900) when the XDA upgraded to 2003 OS's radio stack (T-mobile Radio 6.25 or Siemens Radio stack A33).

Hello,
How are you?
After finally managing to unlock my xda, it does not find any networks!
My ROM Version is 4.01.12 ENG

Radio Version 6.24.00
Protocol version 324e4
Does anyone know of this problem?
Please help me.. I was so happy to unlock it and now i have run into this problem....
I have read that you shouldn't play with the gsm menu in the bootloader screen.. well i did play with them before i knew i shouldn't. Could this be the problem?
Is there a way to reset it?
Should I go to a different radio version?
Please help,
I live in France and I am on the french bouygtel network. I believe this is a 900/1800 gsm network.
Thank you,

6.24.00 radio is for PWA10B1 and for 900/1900 networks only (for USA).
If you have a PWA10A1 model (check the back of your PDA), you should use 4.21.00 for 900/1800. Note: upgrading Radio Stack is very risky, do it for your own responsibility! So after you downgraded to 4.21, enter bootloader, press calendar button then select "900/1800" and soft reset.
You can get 4.21 radio stack from here:
http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/tools/RSU_V4.21_PPC.zip for the ppc install version and
http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/tools/RSU_V4.21.zip for the activesync version. I remind you, upgrading radio stack is risky!!
Search in the forums how to upgrade radio stack.
Oh, and entering bootloader makes a hard reset.

Compatibility of SEROM with Radio A.20.10
I had been asking a similar question elsewhere in the forum.
Given these device specs,
ROM Version : A.21.02 ENG
ROM date: 10/17/03
Radio Version : A.20.10
Protocol version : 324e4
Carrier : AT&T GSM/GPRS in the USA,
would you know if the version of the Special Edition ROM v1.2 available on this site (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/SpecialEditionROM) should be compatible with this radio stack or not? I would not want to do a RS up/downgrade if I can avoid it.

Using a T-Mobile on European GSM
I've just acquired a T-Mobile (unlocked) and want to use it in New Zealand, which has a European setting, 900/1800. The T-Mobile is a PW10B1, which I think is setup to operate on a different frequency.
Can I swap the radio stack to operate on my local GSM network, or will I fry the PDA.
If I do swap the radio stack, and it fails - is there a ROM which I can use to rebuild the PDA with instructions on how to do this (URLS and links would be VERY much appreciated!)
Thanks, Hamish

PWA10B1 is for 900/1900 ONLY. You cant swap radio strack - if your provider works on 900 mhz, then you have to use it on that freq.

Thanks for the reply.
Since then, I've installed a v4 radio stack (as described earlier in this thread) and the system does boot, but won't see my PC for Active Sync and also won't see the network.
I'm downloading the official T-Mobile ROM which I hope I can use, but if activesync won't work, any suggestions as to how to get the ROM loaded?
Also, is there a utility to select the network bandwidth, as there wasn't one already on the device - and I'm beginning to get a little concerned now!
Many thanks for your time so far!

You can choose 900/1800 or 900/1900 from the bootloader, press/hold power while pushing reset with stylus, then when screen appears, push the button below the antenna, choose your appropriate band and from there, for model A choose 900/1800 for model B choose 900/1900. Make sure you have a working backup of your data when using this method.
