I've had the Wallaby since T-Mobile (USA) offered it (I think about three years). I've gotten a lot of good use out of it, mostly thanks to this forum. However, it's time for me to upgrade, and I'd like some feedback from everyone.
First, I'd like to upgrade to a device that has an intergraded keyboard, since my wife has the h4355 and, comparing usage of her device to mine in that respect, it is indispensable in my opinion. So if I upgraded now I would like to get a Blue Angel clone.
But, all these glowing reviews and pictures of the HTC Universal tempt me to wait to upgrade. It truly looks like a dream device!
Since I live in the USA, though, our carriers may not pick this up for another year (if at all?), and at my rate of years-per-upgrade I would probably miss out on quite a bit. So here are what seem to be my choices at the moment:
1.) Forget about getting my hands on the Universal for the next year (or longer), upgrade to the BA now.
2.) Wait until it is released in Europe and probably pay well over $1000 to buy it from a third party.
3.) It is worth the wait for a US carrier to pick it up. It may be a shorter time than I think.
4.) Other.
So which would you do?
Other things to keep in mind are that there are no decent BA's currently offered by any of the US carriers, they are all stripped versions, minus this feature or that feature. So I would have to get one of those from Europe anyway. Do you think US carriers will strip the Universal the same way they have with the BA? Additionally, as someone else previously mentioned, how much do you expect the Universal to be, if the BA is currently around $800?
Can anyone offer any speculation of cost or release date in the USA?
Thanks for the feedback!
Shawn
I think that the universal keyboard will be better than the thumboard on the BA - so you should not buy a BA now, unless you REALLY need something now.
The Universal will be released in europe probably sometime in september from what I have been hearing, so you can get it in a few months for the "normal" price of 900-1200 (which is what the range was for the BA when it originally came out)
It is not likely that US carriers will release this. *maybe* T-mobile will release it, but judging from their past history, it seems unlikely.
Cingular will DEFINATELLY not release it because it lacks GSM 850. Also the UMTS band that is on the universal is not 1900/850 which is what Cingular uses and will use in the future. if the universal was quadband GSM and triband UMTS it might have been a different story.
If you are on the T-Mo network and really want it, just get it when it gets released in europe. That way you have form, function and the WOW factor since it wont be released in the US
Note to HTC: please, please, please make the next version of the universal quadband GSM and at least dual band UMTS (1900/2100)
I will select the "WAIT" if I were you, T-Mobile in NYC was not able to setup my Qetk 9090 on GPRS, the anwser of their failure... we do not know this device... :? (however I succeed to make it work) But I would also wait, PocketPC Italia is talking about 2 devices this year and more coming in 2006 It only depends on how "wealthy" you are but well if you purchase the Universal and that a 9090 like shows up... what will you do?
By the way if you are in the Chicago area you may find a lost Universal

Bottom line this is a nice devie not SO big but the lack of Screen control on the body (like a communicator) may make it borring to use (my 2 cents)
Perhaps North American users can wait and hope for an 850 MHz model, like done with the JAM.

There are some people on earth, like, who are FED UP of only being able to use his 9090 only when he is outside of his country... In Japan we ONLY HAVE 3G... and I cannot use the phone function of my 9090 that I love when I m in a GSM country... so I will buy again and again and again ANY HTC Products simply because of their amazing quality and potential (look around can you cook an iPAQ 4700 or a Treo? and how EASY it is to change a rom) and with a Phone capability...
Cheers
i found a pretty good deal for an HTC Mogul online and it's branded as Sprint right now, would I be able to unlock this and use it on T-Mobile? I have a Wizard right now.
Sprint = CDMA... TMo = GSM... good luck!
that's why I asked!
The T-Mobile Wing is very similar to the Mogul, but it's a little slower. If you like the Mogul that's the closest HTC GSM phone. I've used the Wing and I like it a lot, but I like my Mogul better.

Yea I have a Wizard right now and the wing has the same processor so I'm not going to be upgrading to it, I just saw the 400mhz processor in the Mogul. Maybe I'll save my nickles and dimes and hope for a tytn

Please don't give ****ty advice -- this isn't helpful. The Wing/Atlas is quite inferior to the Mogul.
OP, the Mogul is a CDMA-based cousin of the GSM-based series of devices that have made HTC famous. The true sequel to the HTC Wizard is the HTC Hermes, and there is an absolute crapload of information available right here at xda-developers that can help you get the most out of your device if you go with a Hermes. I have two active contracts (one with T-Mobile and one with Sprint), and therefore I own both a Hermes and a Mogul/Titan. There are a couple of modest tweaks that were made to the Titan's design, but for the most part you'll see at least equivalent performance out of a Hermes.
If you've got cash to spend, I suggest hanging onto it and waiting a couple of months. The successor to Hermes, HTC Kaiser, is looming on the horizon and it offers a host of improvements over the Hermes (and the Mogul as well, for that matter -- though again, they're not direct competitors). If you live in the U.S., you'd be best-served by eBaying an AT&T/Cingular-branded Hermes (branded as the "8525") and running pof's free SIM unlocker to use it with your T-Mobile account. This is exactly what I did to use my Hermes with my T-Mobile account. I paid $400 even for a brand new Cingular-branded Hermes about six months ago, and I imagine that you could do even better today if you're savvy with eBay or through HoFo's buy/sell/trade forum. What kind of "pretty good deal" did you find on the Mogul, anyway? By all accounts, it should cost more than the Hermes.
You would be well-served by reading the wiki.
Actually, the Tytn or Kaiser would be the closest match for GSM (both can be used if unlocked with a T-mob sim card).
The Mogul (titan) works on different networks, with different protocols using different frequencies... there is no SIM card, and there is absolutely NO way in which the phone can even recognize a T-mobile tower!
Its like trying to activate one of those V-tech landline cordless phones with T-mobile... Both operate as phones, but there are just some things that are too different to ever be compatible!
if i was you zach , i would wait about 2 months for the cingular 8925 (htc tytn II) then unlock that phone and use it for t-mobile.

if I were to stay with GSM I would have stay the hell away from WinMo device and go with Nokia or SE--cause you know their BT works!

why do you even post in forums like this?
For your info, winMo devices always had hella good BT- its only the mogul that's had this new problem, and its due to a software glitch with the new chipset that it uses.
Nokias and SE's are no more reliable... I had many many BT problems with my Nokia 6230 that was only fixed months later with a software update. I also had some of the older SE phones, and they worked pretty well but had awful range.
I was very happily using WinMobile on GSM, and wouldn't recommend anything else over it!

THERE'S ALSO CDMA = EvDO (FAST) AND GSM = GPRS/EDGE (SUPER-SLOW)
Hello,
Anyone knows how to unlock the T-Mobile Wing, if so, please let me know.
Your help will be appreciated
Thanks
if by unlocked you mean a sim-unlock, contact your service provider ~90 days after you purchased your phone and ask for the unlock code.
if by unlocke you mean a CID-unlock, go to the WM6 forum and hard-spl your phone. Make sure you follow the directions.
In the future, please search before you post.
I meant sim-unlocked. I was just wondering, 90 days is much to wait ...
Do you know how to sim-unlock it?

Sure! You have 2 choices. Either pay for an unlock code on line or be a T-Mobile customer for 90 days in good standing and get it free.
I'm in the US Navy. I explained to the service rep that I was going overseas and wanted my unlock code. I got it no problem. This was 3 days after I bough my phone.
oh is that so? its good to know.
and also, thank you for your service to our country.

I dont kno who in the world TOLD u its 90 days...but smack them...u def call t-mobile...tell them ur going on a trip and u need ur wing unlocked...they ask for the imei and an email to mail the instructions...i got mine in 45 hrs...look man...I've sat quiet and watched people just make up advice an answers...lol
Really? How long have you been with TMobile? I unlocked my phone after 90 days with tmobile (the wing was my first tmobile phone). It might be different for those that upgraded though, especially if they 've been with tmobile since they were voicestream (like my mom).
I would like to +1 to the going overseas. I went to guam for a month and wanted to use my phone there. They sent me the unlock code in about 2 days I think. Once there I used a local GSM provider on a pay as you go. was like $70 for a pre-paid with 1200 minutes that called the US for 1 to 1 minutes. It wasn't too bad.
I guess, I will have to wait. The thing is, I am T-Mobile customer since 02, but I got the phone from my cousin who signed a new contract with T-Mobile less than 2 weeks ago, just to give me the Wing, since he has N95.
I just thought there might be a way to sim unlock it without payin for unlock codes on ebay,...

i've been wit T-mobile since Voicestream
I've been with T-mobile, Voicestream, Powertel .... going back to the early 90's
Quick question, and sorry of this seems dumb.
Why do I need to "unlock" the phone and what does it achieve? I have had the Wing for any about 2 months but I will be leaving in a few to go out of the country and need it working. I have had standard phones in the past and they always worked outside the US.
One more, I live in Colorado and went up to do some snowboarding over the weekend and had no service...I always have service there, does this unlocking thing have something to do with that?
I have flashed to a new ROM recently that I found here so it is not stock.
Unlocking has nothing to do with your problem. I live on a hill, almost eye-level with a Sprint cell phone tower, and I get 2 bars most times in my living room.

In that case I am a bit concerned about not having service at Copper Mountain.
I wish I could remember but I went up a few weeks back and I think...I am not sure, I had flashed this new ROM just before that, and I had service so I belive this new ROM worked up there before. Now, Saturday it did not, not even weak signal, just "searching..." I though also it might have something to do with a cab I downloaded last week to fix my problem with not receiving MMS. My MMS works now and here in town, I get fine service but why would it not work at this resort? I have always has great service up there, even on the top of the mountain. My friend has Cingular and his phone had great signal.
Unlocking enables you to use any other SIM card on your phone. it has nothing to do with the reception. Your issue would be the new ROM you flashed, try a different Radio and that should help.

Actually, I should have been more specific. I know what unlocking does (both types), I am just not sure if I need to do it or not. Do I NEED to do it if I am leaving for Europe for my phone to work? My previous phones I have had worked with no problem in every country I have been to. But I am not sure about a PPC.
What would cause my phone to only work in a specific area? When I got back to town, I had fine reception. Just not at the resort and it had previously worked fine. Could it be a setting that got changed when I added that cab to update setting for MMS or is that just data connection settings? The cab was listed here on post # 205.

I have the same ROM (Touch IT 4.4) and have had issues with the MMS so have used exactly the same CAB you pointed out-
I did notice that the reception is worse with the 4.4 so i dont think its any issue with the CAB. Like i recommenced, try a new Radio, some could boost your reception. ( but yea, places where i had 4 bars now only has 2 or less, so i would say its the Radio issue rather than the MMS Cabs you installed)

OK, thanks! So can I get just a new radio version or do I need a new ROM?
New to this site and I have a Canadian Rogers HTC Touch elf Rom version 2.21.631.1 wwe dated 10/05/07 I am tired of the fact that all the other cell companies in Canada are offering the upgrade to 6.1. I have contacted Rogers and they said nothing was tested for their network yet and didn't even know if was going to be offered. I have recently notice that Sprint in US is offering the upgrade and their work on gsm same as rogers. Has anyone tested the rom on a Rogers phone and does it work. I am getting frustrated. I am not skilled enough or too nervous to experiment with cooked roms. I need all my current features but want the 6.1
I've searched through the forums but can't find anyone asking this and I'm curious. After trying out a lot of different cooked ROM's using USPL and tweaking/testing/sampling what's around I'm getting very confident about tweaking my HD thanks now to this 5-star community and site!
I'm still unclear about what advantages/dangers are there to upgrading your radio version? I totally respect the usual dangers of bricking your device during a rom/software upgrade and all the usual banter surrounding tweaking a device, but wondering specifically why someone would want to upgrade their radio? Is it dependent on your carrier and country of region/usage? What should you be aware of or should you only ever upgrade radio version under very specific situations?
I'm running radio 1.13.25.24 in Australia using Telstra on unlocked HD.
Thanks!

We Update Radios for Better reception.. signal and etc improve of the Conection and things like this.
So for me.. you know that the Touch HD have a few second delay when someone calling you...
WHen i flash my RADIO with thelatest one 1.17 and also install a RILHONE 1.14 the phone start to respond without any delay.. also the improvment of signal was cool in some place that befor i have 1 bar signal now i have 3 or more.. the Wi Fi is a bit faster and etc
Also the GPS can improve depends...
So the Radio only by himself can`t do the same for everyone also depends from the ROM you useing and from the Mobile Operator
Like you can see im from Bulgaria and for me the Radio 1.17 with 1.14 Rilphone is the best combination but for you can be diferent....
Anyway the NEW Radio is made to Improve, if we don`t have what to improve there we will not need form a new Radio and HTC will not make a new Radios this that they make new Radios mean that.. still have what to be improved.
This is not only with the RADIOS always when have some UPDATE no matter for your Desktop PC or your Phone or whatever the Update = Improve, of course not all the time the NEW = BETTER and bugs FREE but this is the idea
I've been wondering bout this very same question as well; have been flashing and modding for a while now (aprox 4-5 monthes) and this was goning to be my next port of call. I'm from Oz also but am on the optus network, did you buy the legit next G network telstra HD (T 8285), or just the standard T 8282 ....??
Well I decided to give it a go and upgraded last night to the latest 1.17.25.09 so will post back here with results. It certainly is a very easy and quick process once you understand the USPL process and have already stuffed around with custom ROMs.

I bought a standard unlocked stock T8282 from some Aussie online store (which means it would have come straight from Hong Kong), paid little extra for extended warranty (recommended). Dunno what you mean by 'legit' lol...I'm strongly against the big telcos and the scams they pull making people pay more for a device that has limited functionality and usually locked down and defecated with their corporate logos and ****e. When you want a device, you buy the device. A telco is a service provider of a network service, not a hardware supplier or software house or device tweaker. If you cant afford the device, put it on a credit card and pay a bank off instead of a telco and just get a pre-paid account. In AUS the telcos try and charge unaware peeps $70 and more just to unkock a phone they have locked themselves. Those 'plans' end up costing people over $2000 after 2 years...stoopid. End rant...
