Activesync via bluetooth problem-Bluetooth OK/ActiveSync NOT - Networking

First off I am using Widcomm version 1.4.3.4 on the PC and the Widcomm bluetooth manager for the pocketpc on my I-mate Pocket PC (Newest I-Mate official ROM 1.52WWE)
I followed directions according to:

Pairing, connecting, everything goes perfectly.
However, when activesync starts "Connecting..." it never connects and instead says Microsoft ActiveSync cannot recognize this device for one of two reasons:
The device was not connected properly... blah blah blah
This device is not a Smartphone or Pocket PC.
I have even tried all the other COM ports in the Connection Settings for ActiveSync. I have also tried the default bluetooth stack built in to Pocket PC 2003 instead of the widcomm one and the Connect via Bluetooth... option in the Pocket PC ActiveSync. I have also tried installing the Pocket Bluetooth Tools and nothing works.
Everything else I have tried on bluetooth works (network play of mp3/avi/ogg - Network Access, sending/receiving files - Browse files on a remote device, etc.)

I had similar issues (but wasn't following any instructions )
This fixed it for me:
On XDA II, start ActiveSync, click on tools, then on options, then on options (on options screen), check "Enable PC Sync using this connection", and select 'Bluetooth is box below. (I also select "maintain connection" radio button.)
I know this page says "When cradled", but these settings were required to get uncradled bluetooth to work on my i-mate.

I've the same problem, but in the box "Enable pc Sync using this connection" I haven't Bluetooth choice, but only USB and serials speed.
Does Anyone know why?

I had the same problems with mine, except i had allready tired what dkillk suggested, to no avail. I still got the standard
"cant start comms... port not available...may B in use or invalid...quit any progs useing it & reconnect...try restart..."
error message, evan when soft rebooting the XDA 2 & going straight in2 sync prog.
any1 got any more ideas?

Oh what a minefield this is. However:
I have just today finally got BT activesync working. I had to upgrade my Acer notebook widcomm stack to 1.4.3.4 courtesy of Jon Scaife and his very helpful site. Then I was able to pair my XDA2 successfully. I had to jerk around with settings to get activesync to launch when connecting from XDA. Firstly it would connect using com5 but activesync did not auto launch despite settings being correct. But after randomly enabling and disabling settings and ending up at square 1 it sparked up??
Anyone getting 'port not available/in use etc' errors must set the bluetooth com port to 'Startup Automatically'. Goto Control Panel/Bluetooth Config/Local Services/Bluetooth Com Port Properties.
Alternatively, you can enable it manually before attempting activesync.

And another question : i have downloaded the widcomm stack to 1.4.3.4 but it only install on the computer !
Yet on other website there are some PDA screen captures showing the widcomm stack !
This is such a mess i've spent hours trying to figure out how to make my BT working... once again, as long as you do simple things with the XDA, everything is OK, when you try more features, it does not work. I regret not buying a well known brand like HP where you have all explained and all the appropriate drivers

Bluetooth activesync - Can it Really be This Difficult????

I'm using - Dell laptop with integrated Dell bluetooth, XDA2 with original 1.03 rom, ActiveSync 3.7.1, Windows XP+SP2. I *AM* able to: synchronize fine with USB cradle, synchronize with IR, and beam files directly to the XDA2 from the laptop via bluetooth.
I have successfully: removed all traces of Widcomm, removed and reinstalled the plain old XP/SP2 BT drivers, have removed the pairings and re-created the device pairings successfully, removed and re-created the incoming COM port, renumbered my incoming COM port to 3, set ActiveSync to 'allow serial connection' to COM3, turned off XDA infrared, tried out "Pocket Bluetooth Tools" too, disabled my firewall. I moved my modem from COM3 to COM13. All the devices are 'working properly' according to control panel. Bluetooth switched to 'On' on XDA, once already paired. Bluetooth Devices/Options/Connections/Allow BT devices to connect is ticked.
Now I have tried to connect as documented in the many webpages on this subject, including GeekZone:
A. On the desktop - ActiveSync/File/Get connected... gives the message 'looking for mobile device on IR and COM3' but then nothing happens. After failing, it shows the list, and COM3 is 'available'.
B. On the XDA2 - Start/Settings/System/Bluetooth settings/Start activesync setup - gives message 'Please bond with device supporting serial port' - then takes me to the bonding screen. But I am already bonded successfully!
C. On the XDA2 - ActiveSync/Tools/Connect via BT with 'Laptop' - gives the message 'Cannot start communications with the desktop computer, critical error 608'.
As the pessimistic bobopopo recommended, I tried doing these last things repeatedly in every possible order!
Possible clues as to the problem:
1. I can't get the bluetooth icon to come up in the system tray. It comes up temporarily if I uninstall and reinstall the XP-SP2 drivers, then goes away next time I reset - even though the item 'Show the BT icon in the notification area' is always checked.
2. The first time I make a pairing, the word 'connected' appears below the icon for my XDA2 in the "Bluetooth Devices" dialog, on XP. Once it goes away, thereafter I am unable to get it to say 'connected' again. How can I get it to connect?
3. First time I bonded I got the Pocket Bluetooth Tools profiles dialog on the XDA2 - and ticked all the boxes, including serial port. Now I can't seem to get that screen back again?
4. On the XP machine, if I go to Control panel/Bluetooth Devices/Devices, select the XDA2 that is paired, then Properties/Services, I get only 'Dial up networking', and no exciting stuff like COM, OBEX, audio, PAN etc. - is this right?
5. If I go to Control Panel/Bluetooth Devices/COM ports/Add/Outgoing, and put Browse.., it searches for a while then says 'Windows cannot find any Bluetooth devices. Make sure it is switched on' etc.. although the device is clearly visible. So I can't create an outgoing COM port.
6. Can't beam files from XDA2 to Laptop: though XDA can see the other machine when you try to pair, it can't see it when you go to File/Send To/Infrared recipient - just empty dialog 'Searching...' forever. ('Accept incoming beams' is on and Bluetooth is on.)
????? Is it me or is it Microsoft ?????

reading through your post (although don't consider me an expert on this) it appears that you have the same problems i had before. bottomline? i discovered that windows xp service pack 2 screws up installation of bluetooth software. took me ages to figure this out but what i did was uninstall sp2 and went for sp1 instead. i've read several posts here and in other sites that sp2 doesn't really do well for bt apps...not sure if this is the same for the other chaps but it sure was for me. anyway; i uninstalled all bt software, uninstalled sp2; installed sp1 (reboot, etc), and from there proceeded with reinstalling my bt and activesync apps. from there i followed the guide given in geek zone and presto bt activesync.
the items you described in 1-6 definitely remind me of the sp2 trouble i had.

I found that if I use the cradle to link to activesync this will create the partnership, then use the bluetooth next time and it will work, it seems you cannot get an original partnership over bluetooth.

I don't think its SP2 itself thats the problem. Its the Microsoft bt stack built into SP2.
You can actually run SP2 and the Widcomm bt stack. If you install Widcomm before SP2, then it won't install the Microsoft bt stack. I had the same problem and this resolved it.
The Microsoft bt stack in SP2 is Microsoft's first attempt at bluetooth. Looks like they still have work to do.

Bluetooth activesync is easy IF YOUR NOT in Windows XP SP2!!! best thing to do is to downgrade to SP1.. unfortunately for me im stuck with SP2 in my desktop... but upon discovering this problem i never upgraded my laptop to SP2.. i left it with SP1 nd everything works in harmony...

MORAL LESSON OF THE STORY: NEVER UPDATE TO XP-SP2 if your using bluetooth activesync. :wink:

I've had no problems syncing over BT with SP1, SP2 MS stack and widcomm.
Here's how.
First of all delete any pairings on both PC and XDA.
Sync over USB then on the computer use connection settings to select the correct BT com port.
On the XDA goto Settings->System->Bluetooth->Start
Now repair your device and select ok till you get back to today screen
Goto activesync and then tools->sync over bt
Always has worked for me. If you're still having problems its quite possible that you haven't got the right ports setup on the PC.

YUP! it's all about the COM ports... SP2 gives out extremely high COM ports that activesync doesnt recognize...

Is your PC using...
1. SP2 + MS bluetoooth stack
2. SP2 + Widcomm bluetooth stack
I've followed the method laid out by fruitloaf many times, and only the 2nd combination works for me.
You might also want to consider upgrading from rom 1.03 if you can.

Fruitloaf, is yours an original Orange machine? I've heard this works with SP2 + MS stack, but the O2 Xda II doesn't.

I had this problem constantly with my XDA II and a Toshiba Laptop. All routes of advice came to nought.
The answer for me was to install Pocket Bluetooth Tools, a BT connection manager which has a specific Activesync Profile. Using this has enabled me to use BT A/S with my Win XP Tablet SP2 PC without problems. You have to initiate the Activesync process from the XDA though.
Once you have installed BT Tools, and created an A/S profile using the cradle, go back to the XDA and delete all existing BT Pairings. Then go through the "Bluetooth / Paired Devices/ New routine again. After finding your PC, continuing will give a new Dialogue box with available pairing options. Select "Activesync" and finish. Do a soft reset.
From there, go to Start/Activesync, then tap Tools/Connect via Bluetooth and all should work.
I recommend using PBT Tols version 1.0.1.2 not the newer version, as the later version causes some power management problems with the XDA II.

bluetooth virtual com port too high for activesync
I have a Belkin F8T001 v2 BT USB dongle. BT was working under win xp sp2 and could transfer file etc from PC to XDA IIs and back.
However I tried setting up a BT active sync connection and had the problem that the virtual com port picked by the belkin supplied widcomm BT driver was too high for activesync, it was com20. I followed this thread but could not uninstall the driver and use the driver from SP2 as it doesn't seem to support my belkin USB BT dongle. So I had to go back to the driver supplied by Belkin. I thought I was stuffed until I came across a post that sorted the problem, I'm afraid I dont have it to hand to give author the credit. But here is what he/she said to do.....
1. Disable bluetooth in device manager and remove the high numbered com port from device manager.
2. Then use regedit to change
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\COM name arbiter"
I followed the instructions and changed the first 3 entries in theComDB field to be "0f".
3. Enable Bluetooth in device manager
4. Use bluetooth settings -> local servies to add a new COM port, then set it to autostart in the profiles section.
This time it came up as com5, and bingo activesync could find it and I was off....
Hope this helps others with this problem, usual disclaiamer when fiddling with registry back it up and dont blame me if it doesn't work or your equipment goes up in smoke

That's is my problem, the high COM ports are not recognised by ActiveSync! I think i have 2 downgrade to SP1 and then upgrade again to SP2, hopefully that will work.
The BT drivers is not my problem but it's impossible to select the com port in activesync (but the com ports are visible in the device manager!).
Thanks to this forum for geving me hope , now i know what the problem is.

If you read my post with the registry change above I think you will find it will solve your problem, as I stated this was the only problem I was having with the BT driver.
This is a lot simpler than downgrading to SP1 etc.

This issue may occur because the Bluetooth drivers that are provided by Microsoft support a different set of profiles than the drivers that are provided by some third-party vendors. The Microsoft-provided drivers are also signed and will therefore be installed instead of a third-party driver for supported Bluetooth adapters. The Windows XP SP2 Setup program will try to detect if a third-party driver is present. If the third-party driver is installed, the Microsoft-provided Bluetooth drivers will not install. This action makes sure that an existing configuration is not modified. If both provided drivers were installed, and the Bluetooth Radio were connected to the computer, the Microsoft-provided driver would load because it is signed.
If the missing functionality is critical, you may restore the third-party support. To do this, follow these steps.
Note The following steps assume that the third-party software is installed. If it is not, install the software according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then follow these steps from the point in the installation process where the adapter is connected to the computer.
1. Click Start, and then click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

Go to device Manager, find those high Com Ports, choose Properties - Advanced and at the COM port number choose a low one, Like COM3 etc. Don't bother if it say that it is alreaddy in use...
The go to Active Sync and in the Connection Settings choose from the drop down menu COM 3...
Go to the Activesync in you XDA, in the Options choose connect using Bluetooth and the... click on Connect via Bluetooth from the XDA...
You're done...

I have an O2 Xda II Mini (Magician) and I am using an XMicro Dongle on my laptop (Win XP with SP2) and ActiveSync3.8. Initially syncing with BT was a problem but now its not a problem at all.
To reduce the COM port nos. on your computer try the following website

Once you can see the hidden devices and ports delete/uninstall all the ports which are not in use.
1 To sync with BT first delete all your pairing with your computer and phone on both devices.
2 Go to BT Manager on your phone and click both check boxes for Inbound and Outbound COM ports and pair the devices.
3 Once they are paired go to BT manager again and click on the start button (for BT activesync setup) and pair the devices again if you have to.
4 Once that is done check on the computer in BT Manager click on the phone device>property>services....the Serial Port Profile (SPP) "Serial Port COM4" will be checked.
5 After that on the computer's BT Manager itself ensure that the COM ports folder shows incoming and outgoing ports with the phone's name in front.
6 On the ActiveSync (on the ocmputer) ensure that the COM port no. is the same as the Incoming COM port no. given in step 5 above and it being shown as available. Sometimes if it is unavailable, the computer needs to be rebooted and then it will be shown as available.
7 Click on ActiveSync thru BT on the phone and it should work.
It has been working for me since the past couple of weeks. Initially it took a lot of time to set up but now even if the pairing gets deleted or something messes up its working fine. One thing to remember is that in case you are using a dongle with a laptop ensure that the dongle is plugged in BEFORE you boot up the laptop. A lot of people plug it in later and then ActiveSync on the computer shows the COM ports as unavailable.

M500 / Magician - Cut Down Bluetooth?

Hi,
A few days ago i bought an Orange SPV M2000 (the big PDA sized phone by Orange in the UK). It was £150 ($250) more than the M500 (also know as the Magician), so when i managed to sucessfully create a bluetooth LAN connection on the M2000 and run Skype over it, i decided the extra £150 spent for the Wifi feature was a waste of money so i took it back and got a M500 / Magician instead.
However the M500 doesn't seem to have all the standard bluetooth features. Most noticably the Bluetooth Connection wizard needed to create a bluetooth LAN Connection. The wizard is part of the Bluetooth Manager software.
Does the M500 have a cut down version of the M2000's Windows Mobile software?
Is the M500's bluetooth not capable of a LAN connection?
If I install the latest BigStorage ROM, will it give me the Bluetooth Manager software?
I've attached 2 images of the M2000's Bluetooth Manager software which seems to be missing from my M500.
Any help would be much appreciated?

the magician uses microsoft's bluetooth stack which is not as good as the widcomm/broadcomm stack found on your other phone, i think there is still a way to connect to a bluetooth lan but you will have to do some searching on the forum.
or
you could by the cheap wifi card from ebuyer like many magician users have and use wifi.

Thanks Rob for the suggestion of using Wifi, but if i use the SD slot for a Wifi card, it won't be free for an extra Memory card.
I've had a look around on the forums and haven't been able to find a solution for this yet. Can the widcomm / broadcomm stack be installed into the magician?
If anyone has any other solutions please let me know. Is the M500 / Magician cut down in any other ways? My M500 is still within its 14 day return period so if its not capable of running most Windows Mobile 2003 software i'd rather get my money back.

Bluetooth:
You don't need to create a bluetooth lan connection.
You need to create a virtual serial (com) port with your bluetooth dongle on your PC. Eg Port 7.
Get that set up, then set activesync settings to search the serial port as a connection.
Then on your Magician go to Start > Settings > System > Bluetooth settings.
Click the bottom two boxes, and then click the middle button "start button to setup".
Then this will take you to Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
Here click on Turn on blueooth, make device discoverable, then tab "Devices", search for a new device (ie your pc), create a bond, set up a passcode (0000 etc), your pc should then show a balloon to say your phone is trying to make a connection and requires a pin. Set that Pin to 0000. Your phone should now bond with the PC.
Next open up Activesync on your PPC, and click Tools menu, Connect via bluetooth.
Hopefully, all being well, you should now connect to your pc via bluetooth.
You should be able to browse the internet, and if you can do that (if on your PC you've got internet pass thru on your activesync), you can use skype.
WIFI:
Bigstorage rom will not change your PPC stack; its exactly the same rom as your original, but with more "Storage" memory. However, I use this, copy any Net only apps to my "storage" and can then pop out my SD Card, put in my wifi, and still have access to all my net apps + wifi. I don't use storage for anything else. Wifi is faster than Bluetooth, but both methods work.
Options:
Have a look for the Blue Soleil threads - this is the Bluetooth stack i use on my PC, but you don't need it. It doesn't do much more than you can do now, and certainly not to apply the above info.

i too am using the IVT BlueSoleil bluetooth software. Downloaded the latest eval version from their site.
After following your instructions its still not working, but it appears to be almost there. I'll explain what i've done.
In BlueSoleil bluetooth propertiesi've turned Serial Port A (port 6) off and left SerialPort B (port 7) on. All the other services are on their defaults.
I right click the tray icon and exit it. then restart t make sure the services take on the new settings. (must be an easier way to reset services).
I open ActiveSyncs "Connection Settings" and if i select Com7 the Status reads: Com port is not available.
All your PPC side instructions seem to work, but of course it fails to sync with ActiveSync.
Any idea why the virtual port isn't being seen as working? I'm using Active Sync 3.8 & BlueSoleil 1.6.1.4

i have nothing to say that helps you further, but just wanted to say that i've had such a hard time doing anything via bluetooth on this phone that its extremely disappointing. after a slew of ipaqs, this is so counter-intuitive and i can't get nothing working via bluetooth, most notably GPRS with a laptop.

futurity- I think for some reason I decided to use the WIDCOMM bluetooth software on my PC. It was a LOT of work, so many reboots and required a safe-mode hack, but supposedly better. From memory, the bluesoleil looked much nicer. There's no reason why a simple serial port shouldn't work.
Try on your PC checking My computer > (right click) properties > device manager > com ports to ensure either Com port 7 is on, activated, or being used by something else.
Try changing to com port 6?
If you double click on the serial port in bluesoleil I presume you get properties showing it's available and ready for use?
Bluetooth does work, and for me: I live in a block of flats and I've got the wifi card, which is painless (although it had problems, described elsewhere on the board!). However, I've got 3 wifi signals inteferring from neighbours and I can't get online from one room away from my router. But the bluetooth signal works for about 10m, through walls and doors, so for me it's a cheap and easy solution. The hardest bit was setting up WIDCOMM, so I only recommend it if you like going to the dentist.

Got it working using Windows XP im built Bluetooth drivers. My setup procedure is still flaky though so I aim to sort it out on a clean machine until i perfect it. Only draw back is that you have to log into a user accout in order to use the Bluetooth / Activesync internet access option.
I'll most likely make the next postin gon Tuesday.

Ok, I've finally had time to get the sequence perfected after setting this up about 10 times (most of them failures).
Here is the working procedure, based heavily on the previous posted procedure with some more detailed instructions that worked for me.
PC Bluetooth:
First off you don't need to create a bluetooth lan connection in order to get LAN or Internet access. We're setting up Internet access via the ActiveSync Proxy.
Install your Bluetooth interface into your PC (for me i just plugged in my Bluetooth USB dongle and it installed using XP drivers, but you may need to install specific software).
On your PC task bar (bottom right next to the time) click on the blue Bluetooth icon (called Bluetooth devices on my PC)
Select "COM Ports", then add, then select "Incoming (device initiates the connection)" then OK. This creates an inbound connection that the Magician can use to talk to the ActiveSync Program.
Note the COM port number of the newly created COM port.
PC ActiveSync:
Open ActiveSync
Select File->Connection Settings
Select the "Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port:" and select the port number that you just created.
Magician Bluetooth:
Select Start > Settings > System > Bluetooth settings.
Select the "Inbound COM port:" box.
Then Select the "Outbound COM port:" box. If it asks you to select a device providing a serial interface, click ok,
Then this will take you to Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. but for now close this window by clicking the top right "ok" to close the window. i.e. don't select a new device quite yet.
The Bluetooth settings page should now reappear.
Now press the "Start" button in the middle of the page. Press ok to accept the prompt to select a device providing a serial activesync interface.
Then this will take you to Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth again.
Here click on Turn on blueooth, make device discoverable, then tab "Devices", search for a new device (ie your pc), create a bond, set up a passcode (0000 etc), your pc should then show a balloon to say your phone is trying to make a connection and requires a pin. Set that Pin to 0000. Your phone should now bond with the PC.
Magician Active Sync:
Next open up ActiveSync on your PPC, and click Tools menu, Connect via bluetooth.
Hopefully, all being well, you should now connect to your pc via bluetooth.
You should be able to browse the internet, or use MSN Messenger, and if you can do that (if on your PC you've got internet pass thru on your ActiveSync), you can use skype, X-ten Softphone, PocketIRC, etc.

If you have bluetooth LAN connection doesn't that mean you can also access network shares? I don't think that is possible through active sync...

Yepp, that's amost the only difference, besides that you need ActiveSync for Internet access and not only a standard bluetooth stack capable of doing it.
One remark on the detailed setup list from futurity: If the device is already paired with the PC you want to sync with, you have to (after pressing the start button in the bluetooth settings) re-pair the devices. I'm also always deleting an existing partnership with the PC but I'm not sure wether this is neccessary or not. This procedure ist very annoying when you often switch between PCs. I was told that the Freeware PocketMultiPartnershipSync helps for that but it didn't quite work for me.
What is concerning using the GPRS modem over the Magician, I was writing some detailed walkthroughs for that in the forum. You basically need to set up AT strings in your Modem settings to set up the APN of your provider. I also experienced that it sometimes didn't work, maybe due to the installed radio version on my device. I was successful with the Radio 1.13 installed, so try that.

The Orange M500 has the Microsoft (M$) Bluetooth stack so making a LAN connection isn't an option for me.

This is what i did:
If you have any COM port used by your other stuffs, I suggest delete them, and change to other port. Basically, Windows mobile use this port as their default:
Incoming Port : COM4
Outgoing Port: COM5
therefore make this on your computer:
Bluetooth Port COM3
Communication Port COM4
Communication Port COM5
and then set your Activesync to detect COM3
Now you can use Activesync + other thing you may need for LAN

Ok, I've finally had time to get the sequence perfected after setting this up about 10 times (most of them failures).
Here is the working procedure, based heavily on the previous posted procedure with some more detailed instructions that worked for me.
PC Bluetooth:
First off you don't need to create a bluetooth lan connection in order to get LAN or Internet access. We're setting up Internet access via the ActiveSync Proxy.
Install your Bluetooth interface into your PC (for me i just plugged in my Bluetooth USB dongle and it installed using XP drivers, but you may need to install specific software).
On your PC task bar (bottom right next to the time) click on the blue Bluetooth icon (called Bluetooth devices on my PC)
Select "COM Ports", then add, then select "Incoming (device initiates the connection)" then OK. This creates an inbound connection that the Magician can use to talk to the ActiveSync Program.
Note the COM port number of the newly created COM port.
PC ActiveSync:
Open ActiveSync
Select File->Connection Settings
Select the "Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port:" and select the port number that you just created.
Magician Bluetooth:
Select Start > Settings > System > Bluetooth settings.
Select the "Inbound COM port:" box.
Then Select the "Outbound COM port:" box. If it asks you to select a device providing a serial interface, click ok,
Then this will take you to Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. but for now close this window by clicking the top right "ok" to close the window. i.e. don't select a new device quite yet.
The Bluetooth settings page should now reappear.
Now press the "Start" button in the middle of the page. Press ok to accept the prompt to select a device providing a serial activesync interface.
Then this will take you to Start > Settings > Connections > Bluetooth again.
Here click on Turn on blueooth, make device discoverable, then tab "Devices", search for a new device (ie your pc), create a bond, set up a passcode (0000 etc), your pc should then show a balloon to say your phone is trying to make a connection and requires a pin. Set that Pin to 0000. Your phone should now bond with the PC.
Magician Active Sync:
Next open up ActiveSync on your PPC, and click Tools menu, Connect via bluetooth.
Hopefully, all being well, you should now connect to your pc via bluetooth.
You should be able to browse the internet, or use MSN Messenger, and if you can do that (if on your PC you've got internet pass thru on your ActiveSync), you can use skype, X-ten Softphone, PocketIRC, etc.

BT Activesync "No Partnership"

Trying to BT AS from my JasJar to my PC.
PC has activesync service setup on COM6
AS is listening on COM6
JasJar has outgoing COM set to 4
When I start a BT sync reports "Cant find existing Bluetooth Partnership that supports activesync." and asks for a search.
Run through the wizard and select my PC and its serial port. After finishing device will not start a connection.
Go back to activesync and try to connect via bluetooth and gives the "cant find partnership error.
Tried two different adapters on the PC and neither get it to work.
Anyone with any ideas?

Remove all the BT setting you have setup. Just follow the Help file on AS4.1 it works, really!

Tried all that and still not working.
Device just doesnt seem to initiate an outgoing connection.

ActSync connection problem!!
Did you fix the connection problem, think we are living the same case.
If you did fix would you please tell me what was the way?

From the PC AS, select File>Connection Settings and uncheck USB connection and select the BT COM port for Allow Connections. Then select "Connect" and wait till it tries all the connections and fails. Then selec Cancel and then try to connect from your Universal.
PS - I am assuming you have set-up the BT pairing using the Control Panel on the PC and Added the BT COM port from there as well

Tried your suggestion. No luck.
PC is setup correctly. AS listening on COM6 (BT AS port as shown in my local services)
Jas doesnt seem top even initiate an outgoing connection. Get no blue indication on my desktop icon or on the port status item in the control panel.

Sorry to keep asking questions, but when you set-up the pairing between the PC and JJ did you get a Wizard on the PC that identified the ActiveSync service? Does the pairing info on the JJ say the PC provides a ActiveSync service?

I've had the same problem with my M5000, just solved it.
I removed the Toshiba bluetooth Drivers from the system and rebooted. WinXP SP2 found new hardware and proceeded to install what I assume to be standard MS Bluetooth stack. (DellHardWare.jpg)
Next, I deleted the bluetooth partnership from the M5000. I created a new partnership with my laptop, but initiated from the M5000. At this point, the M5000 didn't offer any services to use with the partnership. So, back to the laptop, creating a new incoming COM port (COM8),(DellCom8.jpg) and then set Activesync on the laptop to use that newly created port. (DellAS_connect.jpg)
Back to the M5000 bluetooth partnership, select the newly created partnership and click refresh (M5000btooth.jpg) This Time it offers me the activesync service. Tick the activesync service and then save.
Finally, on the M5000, from activesync select bluetooth connection...and that was it. Still working. Once I've disconnected and soft reset I'll try to make the connection again and report back. I'll also try to use the M5000 as a wireless modem and post results here.

FrankyG, great news. But I think the procedure you described is not that different from the AS44.1 Help file I suggested earlier.

Delete all your BT COM in control panel/system/device manager (select view and show hidden devices) by going to safe mode. Afterwhich restart your PC and try to pair again....it's always works for me
