XDA-I OS upgrade/downgrade after sim unlock - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Please excuse my inexperience. After unlocking my XDA-I using the unlocking software from its original AT &T WM2002 to XDA-Developer(3.17.03, V.12) Is there a way to change the OS back to WM2002 or 2003? If so, will I be better or worse off. I ask due to any future updates to the various parts of the OS like Media Player, Internet Explore and such. Does XDA-Developer have updates to solve any recent updates? Thanks everyone.

To unlock or not to unlock...

I have a SX-56 with AT&T. As many of you know, AT&T service has gotten pretty bad and they are no longer adding sites that use 1900. T-mobile still services 1900. My questions are the following:
1. Should I unlock the phone so that I can have T-mobile service. I have read posts where the AT&T rom does not work well with T-mobile service.
2. Have any of you done this in Southern California and experienced problems?
3. Also considering upgrading to PPC 2003 but I've read posts of damaged roms. Really can't afford to lose my phone till I get a new one. Should I upgrade before or after unlocking?
I am new to a PPC phone but have used a PPC for a while. I do not understand the terminology with cooking roms and such. If someone can break this down for me in very easy to understand information, it would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Your current RSU can still work with TMO if the device is unlocked. There are 2 ways to unlock:
1. Use the XDAunlock tool. This will keep your current ROM.
2. If the above doesn't work, you have to flash your device with the special edition ROM v1.2 which will unlock your device with the first boot.
Then it will be your decision to stay on PPC2002 or to upgrade to WM2003. ROM flashing is very safe process if you know what ur doing, but stay away as possible from RSU flashing.
Good luck

Newbie question: Upgrade to PPC 2003 w/unique ROM & Rad

Let me apologize if someone has asked this before (however I did search and found nothing). I also want to apologize if I sound stupid - I'm incredibly new to all this technology.
The Device: I have a "Siemens SX56" which I now know has many other names (thanks to this website). My ROM version is R.20.11 ENG dated 06/05/03, my Radio version is A.20.10 and my Protocol version (don't have a clue what it does) is 324e4. My wireless GSM carrier is Rogers in Canada.
The Problem: I wish to upgrade the device from Pocket PC 2002 (currently installed) to Pocket PC 2003. Microsoft only allows the manufacturer to provide this upgrade. Siemens does not have an upgrade for this device for people using the Rogers product in Canada. They do however have the upgrade available to AT&T subscribers in the U.S.
The Questions: Does anyone know if I can use the Siemens AT&T upgrade without any problems? What differences are there between these products? I noticed that my ROM and Radio versions were not included in the profile list (they must be fairly unique) does anyone have any familiarity with them and if so, how are they different from the newer versions? Can I update my ROM version to something less unique and still retain my wireless GSM carrier? Siemens and Rogers have been thoroughly unhelpful.
Thank - you for all your help.
It is so easy to upgrade to 2003.
Over hundreds posts are in the forum about upgrading to 2003
If you still cannot get it, contact me to help you. I'm in Toronto, Canada
thanks cgigate,
I too read MANY messages in this forum about upgrading to 2003 but haven't found anything that dispels my concerns about upgrading a phone with Rogers AT&T as the carrier.
Can you provide a link? What file(s) should I be looking for?
Also, a couple of other things...
1. Is there a way to backup my SMS messages before the upgrade and then restore them after the upgrade?
2. Has anyone found a solution the the "increasing ring" or volume clipping that was included in the new ROM's?
Thanks again! PS. I'm in Mississauga.
Rogers is my concern
Thanks Cgigate,
My concern is the same as Guiness.... how will the update effect a Rogers phone? The Siemens website clearly states that the upgrade is NOT for a rogers phone so I'm a little concerned. I did search the forums for any information on this and found nothing to this specific issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Sean
P.S. I'm in Markham/Toronto.
Update
Well, Siemens finally posted on their website an upgrade for WM2003 for the Rogers phones. You can find it here: http://www.my-siemens.com/MySiemens...C%2FMC%2FSX56POCKETPCPHONE%2Fdanda%2F,00.html
I downloaded it and followed the instructions. The Radio Stack was upgraded successfully, however, the thing pooched during the ROM update. Phone is dead - won't turn on at all. I contacted the Rogers guy I bought the phone from and he has sent it in to get reflashed.... crappy!
Hey senmc,
I just followed your link to the Siemens upgrade for Rogers users in Canada.
I did the download, full upgrade (Radio Stack and OS) and it worked flawlessly!
I'm up and running without any problems... except, of course, I am having the same volume issues that everyone else has written about.
I just went to the Siemens site.
It says..." the upgrade is no longer avaliable"!!!
Does anyone know where else can I find the upgrade?
Try this link:
http://downloads.rogers.com/wireless/products/phones/siemens/Siemens_SX56_Software_Upgrade.exe
Here is the update to WM2003 directly from Rogers.
(I've got some problems with this ROM used in the ROMkitchen. But in the original format it should work fine....)

HTH

any ROM available for Dopod C800.

i could not endure the OS WM5. any one tell me how to upgrade to wm6.
my devices is dopod c800, could upgrade it through unlock the cid?
sigh....
check one of the many posts in the Herald Mobile 6 forum. The upgrade does not require your phone to be cid unlocked. Execute aserg's policies on your phone (should come with any of the roms you download) then run upgrade_rom.bat. Its that simple. Here are a few links for roms that are currently out.

Aslong as your phone is WWE you should have no problem updating as there is a RUU for your phone which will restore your phone to its original state should you encounter any problems during the upgrade. Please read the threads carefully (the entire Herald forum while your at it) because having common knowledge of your device can save you much time and hassle in the future; plus you will discover the much needed configs such as page pool changer.
The wiki is also jam(he jammed the radar...raspberry.....can only be one man.......lonestar....-anyone know which movie this is from...lol) packed with useful information regarding your phone

You can play with 7389 too. No need for unlocking to play games. Just visit the MP and get what you want.

If you want to play some games, get a credit card, go into Xbox live on your phone and order a game like everyone else does.
If you want to try "home brew" games, then there is no way to roll back nodo right now...
Almost sounding like you want to hack a game, and that is a BIG no-no here...
Downgrading from NoDo
Hi,
You don't need to developer unlock your device if you want to play games (there are not homebrew games for now on WP7).
There is a solution to downgrade to 7004 rom, but it's for the advanced users. Doing this can brick your phone and avoid your warranty.
So, for advanced users who want to downgrade to be able to chevron unlock their Windows Phone, you need to download the initial ROM for your device (be careful to download the correct one if it's a branded device). These ROMs can be downloaded in the forum (posts writen by "ansar", different threads for each device).
After flashing it you lose all your personal data that is not synced with your Windows Live account.
Then, unlock the phone, and apply the xap that keep the phone unlocked (to not relock automatically).
Finally you can update your phone to NoDo with Zune.
You guys missed my point . I want to jailbreak it to play game without paying on marketplace . But after a couple of days using the phone I guess some free apps sastify me. And I think I will secure it to make sure it can get the Mango update. But just asking, is there anyway to jailbreak Nodo or downgrade the Nodo updated phone to build 7004 to jailbreak. Thanks
downgrade from nodo
Yes there is a way to do this.
Can you tell me if you have NoDo (7390) or the small security update deployed after NoDo (7392) ?
You can know this in the settings menu of your Trophy.
Because if you have NoDo (7390) you can downgrade to 70xx with Zune, in the update menu (restore).
But if you have updated to 7392 after NoDo, if you restore via Zune you will downgrade to the previous version (so NoDo 7390) where you can't unlock/jailbreak. The only way is to install a stock rom to get your phone like when you have bought him (7004). An user named Ansar have posted all the stock roms in this forum.
u use goldcard(up video)
It is quite frustrating that up to this moment, NoDo seems invincible to be jail-broken. I saw lots of work on IPhone jailbreaking but I don't know why this flame is missing on Windows Phone 7. Perhaps since it is still OS in development, devs are waiting until getting an almost complete version (maybe after Mango Update).
If you updated it yourself, you should have a pre-NoDo restore point. Plug your phone into your PC and Restore back.
Can I roll back to 7004? I currently have 7392

Yes you can roll back to 7004 from NoDo.
You have to download and flash the ROM corresponding to your phone (search for the rom in xda forum, in topics posted from Ansar.
Be careful, you will lose all your personal data (except contacts and calendar, synced with your Windows Live account).
i have got a htc 7 trophy on version 7389 i want to unlock it is it possible

Please don't take this the wrong way...its just a question...nothing implied.
Whats the need or attraction to unlock the VP? What is gained?
Again, please don't read into the question...its just a question.
You can downgrade to retail wp7 7004 t-mobile by using tutorial from next thread: unbricking dvp. Just flash retail ffu, by mensioned methode and here you are.
be carefull: any errors during flashing may cause a brick.

Ya i am wondering the same thing as Chevron7 never supported the DVP, there seems to be no reason to do this? unless maybe you want to try and interop-unlock the phone but again that has never been done... yet
Some of us are developes/tinkerers that love to mess with whatever we own.
Dev/interop unlocking is part of this, you could simply unlock to fiddle around with the contents of the rom and just that much.
If WP7 had something as well made as root explorer, that in it of itself is reason enough to unlock. You can learn a lot about an os just by figuring out how it ticks. (Just one of many reasons to unlock, your mileage may vary)
