Fixing "GSM Error" in Wallaby Bootloader 5.15? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

G'day All,
Got an XDA I here that's giving me the "white screen of death" It will start into the Bootloader (5.15) with the Action/Reset/power combo - But comes up with "GSM Error" which I understand means that the Radio Stack has died.
Ironically, this has actually occurred without playing with this unit at all!! (Just normal service!)
Does anyone know of a technique (SD card or otherwise) to restore the Radio Stack and get past this problem?
Cheers!
Andy

I just fixed a unit yesterday that had the same problem.
What I did was keep pressing the record & Contacts buttons until the welcome screen came up after that was completed. (Note this went on for
about 10 min.)
I then connected it to my PC logged on as a Guest via ActiveSync the used ActiveSync Explorer and copied the needed Radio Stack files over in the Windows root folder and ran the RSUpgrade.exe and reinstalled the Radio Stack. Your success rate may very.
Needed Radio Stack files:
RSUpgrade.exe
RSUpgrade.cp64
monitor_ul_bs.map
monitor_ul_bs.m0
FYI not knowing what OS was on the unit I upgraded it first to the AT&T pre-release WM2003 thats available on MPX200.org via the boot loader method and then used the included A.33.01 RS files to reinstall the RS.
BTW the link to the above pre-release can be found on the front page of this forum.
Good luck and HTH

Hi, i've tried extracting the files and i've got:
Orilgsm.005
000setup.999
MONITO~1.002
MONITO~1.003
RSUPGR~1.000
RSUPGR~1.001
RSUPGR~1.004
What can i do to get the four files u suggest?

Recovering from a cactus Radio Stack
Thanks for that..
Catch is though that the unit doesn't want to present a "Welcome Screen".. or boot into PPC? Just a white screen with blue strip at the top and the keyboard selector at the bottom right.
ActiveSync won't recognise the unit either...
You mention "Record / Contacts" buttons.. Could you possibly give me more details on this? If I can get the unit talking with ActiveSync again, then all should be fine reloading the Stack.. But it just doesn't seem to boot properly...
Any thoughts greatly appreciated!
Cheers.
Andy

looks like you're extracting em on a filesystem that can only handle 8.3 filenames, like dos etc
try in w95 - xp or on a mac
maltloaf

You need to either extract the hole ROM upgrade file
or run it, once its finished 'unpacking' the files cancel out of it. It should leave everything in place in C:\Program Files\SX56 upgrade utility\english
HTH

i also have the same problem as this.
some people tell me the radio stack can not be fixed.?
i cant see why if u can flash the rom...
if u get this fixed id love to know.

USA RSU Fix...help!

I have officially screwed up my RSU. I can boot into CE just fine, but there is no radio stack to speak of. After having many partial attempts, there's just nothing there. I've tried everything (or so it seems). I can do an activesync connection, btw.
Whenever I try to run PROGRAMME A, it just hangs. I hit the next button and *nothing* happens. That's any program a, whether from ATT or Tmobile.
Hi there,
Did oyu try installing the Radio Stack Programma A thingy from another windows installation? Another pc? Perhaps that will work.
Os course... you could be trying to install a version which is not suited for your GSM provider/GSM hardware. Look for info at your GSM provider website. It's hard is not impossible for anyone here to tell you which version should work for your device.
Cya,
Oz
Yeah...I tried it on my laptop too. The problem seems to be program b, which rewrites the RSU. It simply won't do it for some reason. This shouldn't be the case.
Come on....someone must have some stupid trick to re-flash the radio stack. I remember seeing solutions to the "1% problem," but all of those solutions were with the non-US radio stacks. :-/ I didn't buy my phone from Tmo, so I have no warrenty to speak of.
which rom and ruu were you using? seems like you were using the .exe correct? which unit/network are you on? this might help you get some help. be specific with the problem, etc.
What versions (ROM and Radio Stack) were you using prior to running the EXE upgrade?
What versions are currently installed?
And which radio stack are you trying to upgrade to?
I was using 4.00.005 and the newest ATTWS ROM before, and I was trying to go to Yorch's newest Tmobile beta, the one that includes the RSU.
Right now I have the most recent official Tmobile ROM and no radio stack on there.
Ejdmoo:
After decompressing the rar file, look for the two RSUpgrade files; one is .cp64 and the other is .exe. Copy them via Activesync to the windows directory on your TMo PPCPE. Then execute the RSUpgrade.exe file. That should reflash the new radio stack. It worked for me. Good luck!
David
I am in the same boat as ejdmoo, and had the same roms installed and all that good stuff...still no go with fixing the radio stack. One thing I noticed is that I removed the .cp64 file from the \windows directory and it still tried to update and failed at 1%. I don't think the version of the .cp64 file matters since it is not getting that far.
Another issue that popped up after the failed update is th unit does not charge, it will only run on AC, and it does not show a status in the power app under settings. Bout you ejdmoo?
Come to think of it, I am having the same power/charge problems. Also, I have tried copying the RSUpgrade.exe program to the device multiple times and from multiple sources. Also, I copied some of the other required files (something map and .c64 file), still didn't work. I think it *must* have to do with the RSUpgrade.exe, but I wouldn't know why.
FYI...I'm going on vacation this week (luckily I have a backup phone), but I expect this to be fixed when I get back! :!:

This is what adaptrom returns now, this is when the tmo is connected and browsable via AS. Anyone have any ideas why this would be happening?
Since my unit will be replaced I am willing to do some scary things with it, so if any of the xda-devolopers want me to try something let me know. I have an sd reader/writer and a usb cable but no serial cable.

Been there seen that!
Here is hope I fixed it:
First go to the below site and download and install the v4.21 ENG radio stack upgrade. Now here's the tricky part but I must warn you I did all three and really don't know which one did it, might have been a combo of all three.
1. Entered bootloader mode and selected the 900 band and re-booted.
2. Removed the SIM card and rebooted
3. Entered bootloader mode and turned off the radio.
Note you'll know when you got it right because you'll have a stable Active Sync connection. So after each of the above steps see how stable Active Sync is before trying the next step.
Reran the T-Mobile upgrade (PC install) and all went go well.
02 Radio Stack Upgrade v4.21 (1.54MB) Download.

I'm not sure in which order you want me to do what...?
I had the same problem, but a hard reset fixed it for me.
David
For all of you having the same problem I have been having after upgrading to the O2 4.21 RSU here is what I have found makes the loading of the RSUpgrade files into the \windows directory work. You need to also copy the monitor_ul_bs.m0 and monitor_ul_bs.map files to the windows directory. Then when you execute the RSUpgrade.exe it works.
barjohn you are a genius!!! I can't believe I never thought of moving the other files before...you rock I am now in possesion of a fully working WM2003 T-Mobile PPC PE!!!
Thank You barjohn!!

Boy I forgot about doing the hard reset, what step was that?
It must have came right after the Radio stack upgrade, Right!
So it appears that what works for some doesn't work for others, strange business!
I read barjohn's fix were he manually copied some missing files into the windows folder and that solved it for him, I guess we were just lucky! :?

So it would be save to say that one should just copy the above files into the Windows folder first before starting the initial upgrade and forgo all of the other headaches, agreed!
Qman,
That's a great idea, but then we would miss out on the thrill of thinking we have transformed a great electronic device into a $400 paperweight! What fun is it if everything works out on the first try? Have fun!
David
Well Ive officially made my tmobile ppc a $400 paper weight. I was running the Kitchen rom with ATT radio stack and I attempted to update the RSU to the latest tmobile version to see if it improved the signal meter using the method mentioned here. I copied the files suggested here via activesync to the windows folder on my ppc and ran the exe, the upgrade stopped at 13% and that was it. Unfortunately I dont have a SD reader so Im high and dry until tomorrow. I can access the bootloader and I get the GSM error and thats it.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. I noticed you did a hard reset, which is also what I did. That may have been the death blow.
First of all, do not do ANYTHING in the Wallaby bootloader. If you start messing around in there, you're done.
Plug your phone into the power cord (even though the battery won't charge now, the phone will stay powered if you keep it plugged in).
Try to get the RSU files for the version you initially upgraded from (6.18 for the default T-mobile, or maybe 4.21 like I had from a 4.00.05 ROM upgrade package). Load those files into the Windows directory and then try running them.
Just FYI, I did a hard reboot and changed ROMs several times. I also messed with all kinds of GSM settings in the bootloader. In the end, my phone was toast. Unrecoverable. Fortunately, I got mine from T-mobile and they did an exchange. With my new phone, I'm just gonna wait for the official RSU before I try changing it
ok...too late about the Wallaby thing, that was the 1st thing i was messin with, wen i first loadit it it said "wait" 4 a looooong time, then finally said "gsm error"....but i started playin with it, an tried every option on there, but nothing happened @ all.
2nd: i cant load any thing into windows, because the xda never boots up, just sits @ the 1st screen
so i figured im gona have to get a usb r/w and a SD card
should i use XDArit.exe or XDAtools.exe
im i gona have problems, i think i have Wallaby 5.17

BTW I never upgrade my radio stack while my device is connected to my PC, I always disconnect and use the AC adapter.

At this point I suggest that if you have an PC card SD card reader reload
the OS and start over with the radio stack upgrade using the same upgrade method but this time upgrade to the AT&T radio stack because
its less likely to fail than the T-Mobile stack.
Also after the OS reload you would have to copy the needed radio stack files from your PC to your SD card then move them to your devices Windows folder.
BTW what radio stack were you upgrading from?

WILL THE ATT STACK WORK WELL ON MY T-MOBILE SERIVICE?
AND IM CONFUSED ABOUT HAVIN 2 HAVE TO COPY FILES TO THE SD THEN TO THE XDA...1ST, BECAUSE I NEVER USED AN SD W/R OR ANY OF THE SOFTWARE NEEDED TO USE IT, AND IF I RELOAD THE OS, CANT I JUST BOOT UP AND COPY THE STACK FILES THRU ACTIVE SYNC? OR WILL THE DEVICE STILL NOT BOOT UP ??

Yes the AT&T radio stack will work on your T-Mobile and its the one I use and recommend.
As far as reloading your OS from the SD card its what we call the SD card boot loader method and is by far the best way to upgrade your OS. Do a search on this forum for more info.
Yes your device will boot but since your radio is blown Activesync most likely wouldn't connect.

ok, thanks again...i guess im off to buy the reader/writer, and the card, from walmart, or radio shack whichever is cheaper...( DO I NEED A 64MB CARD, OR CAN I GET A 32MB?)
I'll repost after halloween, since i gota go to sum partys an release all my xda induced stress with good old friend beer
btw, lol, my girlfrien seen my xda while i was tryin to repeadidly boot it up, & as it was froozen on the boot screen, i have "rom is cooking" bootimage, an she was all " i guess u did fry ur phone"
....so with XDAtools OSImagetool, will i be able to copy the r stack?
is the target x:\windows\
that easy?...god i hope :?
Yes you'll need at least a 64MB SD card.
BTW Fry's had one on sale earlier this week for $22.00.

re radio stack upgrade
I've been following this thread re radio stack upgrade to TMO. I have RS6.18.00 currently and see 6.24.00 at yorch.net's web site under upgrades. Questions:
1. Do you copy the 4 upgrade files to the /windows folder on the PDA to run the upgrade?
2. My phone is working fine with ROM4.00.21 and RS6.18.00, should I upgrade my radio stack to 6.24 or wait another month or two for TMO's offical build?
Kind of nervous given the threads I've read. btw, I bought a SD card reader/writer & flashed ROM via bootloader/XDATools method. Worked well.

I suggest upgrading to the AT&T Radio Stack first it has a higher upgrade success rate IMHO or just wait on the official T-Mobile lease.
As fas as how do you copy the files over, you can use Activesync Explorer or use your PC's SD card reader to copy them to your SD card then copy them from there.

back & hungover...
so i got me a sd reader & the card.....copyed 4.00.16 to it (b4 had 4.00.05 i think) loaded it via wallaby, everything looked fine (except my battery was practically dead, i had to race to get it off the charger reset and put it back on the charger) so the os was copyed fine, and wallaby told me to cold reset (that did mean a "hard", no?)...so i hard reset it, then after a few mins i stuck the pin bak in the lil ass hole, and nothing happened  so i put it bak on the charger, an the boot screen appeared, with a new image and on bottom of screen it sed 4.00.16 ..........but then it just sat there, like b4 and wut i noticed, that i didnt mention b4, is wen its booting up, 1st shows the "4.00.16" then sits there for like 2 minutes, then pops up a "G" & "R" above the "4.00.16" respctivly.....
and i left the device on charger 4 a while, and tried to hard reset again and still wont boot after 2nd pin push :?: :?: :?:
and another thing i didnt mention b4, wen loadin wallaby, it sez gsm error, or did i mention that
i had an idea, maybe to install an older os 3.xx.xx??? but it seams the problem is the gsm wont load, or isnt ther, or damaged, i dont know, how can i load a working GSM on it

XDA 1 not working

Hi,
I was upgrading the software upgarde on my device. I successfully upgraded the Pocket PC software on the O2 XDA, but when I tried to upgrade the GSM radio/GPRS software of the O2 XDa, it gave some error and after this my device is not starting at all. The only mistake I did was that "I did not remove the SIM card before upgrading the GSM radio/GPRS software" The device does not start even after cold booting the same. When I start the device, the O2 screen comes and after a quite long time the main window does come but I cannot do anything. I tried to tap on contacts, time, tasks but nothing happens. I can see the windows logo wall paper but cannot do anything. Please help on how I can restore back my O2 as a cold reset also does not work. :?
Thanks and Regards

SD card install guide
Ok here you go, its a little outdated but its what I still use:
Qman's how to use XDArit to write nk.nb1 or nk.nbf to your SD card aka the Bootloader Method!
1. Place XDArit and the nk.nb1 or nk.nbf file in the same folder and start XDArit.
2. Select your SD card (disk drive) from the drop down menu.
3. Select Write to SD
Notice that the Windows CE box is already checked so just click the browse button at the end of that window.
4. Select your (nk.nb1 or nk.nbf) image and then Open
Notice by default XDArit will open looking for a *.nb1 file but if you're going to use a .nbf file you'll have to manually change the "Files of Type" to *.nbf
Notice that nk.nbo / nk.nbo was automatically added as your boot-loader and its check box is unchecked so leave it that way and click OK. XDArit should start writing to the card.
When XDArit has finished writing the image put the SD-card into the XDA and hold the power button and soft reset. You'll be taken to the below screen:
SD DOWNLOAD
Card Type:
CE OS & BOOT
Press action to Download
Or
Press REC to Exit
Press action to download and it will start the download/restore from the SD card.
Follow the on screen instructions once its "Completed" which will consist of a "Soft Boot/Reset".

Hi Rudegar,
I tried the procedure given by you. I was able to write to the flash successfully. After writing to the flash it gave a message "Checksum OK, Please cold reboot to reset".
I did a cold reboot. After starting the O2, it showed the O2 logo screen and after quite a long time, it asked me wether I want to format the SD card or not. After that it took me to the default screen of XDA wher eit showed options like "Add today's date, Contacts, Schedule etc etc. but upon tapping any of the options the O2 behaves erratically. If I tap on today's date it takes me somewhere else. Inshort it does not work.
I again did a cold reboot and now the device is in its original position i.e not going after the O2 logo where it gets stuck up.
One thing I would like to mention is that all these activities have been done putting the O2 on the cardle only as the battery is totally discharged and the device turns on only after putting it on cradle. Even after the cold reboot it does not start unless I put it on the cradle whichis connected to the mains. Is it Ok with this or am I doing something wrong? The battery does not charge and hence I have to do it in this way.
Please suggest what wrong am I doing? Any suggestions from anyone will be welcome.

Hi,
Someone posted the original O2 ROM on this site and I downloaded the same after which I was partially succesful in flashing the ROM and reviving my dead O2 back to half life.
I burned the ROM on
to my SD Card and flashed the ROM on to my O2. After
successfully flashing the ROM I rebooted the device.
The device now starts Windows but it takes atleast 15
minutes to start. I get the today screen. WHen I cick
on start the start menu appears after a delay of 10
seconds and all applications run normal, however all
this happens only on the Cradle only.
When I go into the Battery Settings it shows "Battery
Status Unknown".
Also none of the phone functions work. The SIM card is
not recognized and in device information it does
dispaly the "IMEI number" and the "Protocl Version"
I am only able to use inbuilt phone applications.
Is there some problem with my battery cause it is not
charging even on the cradle.
Device Information does not show Radio Version, Protocl Version & IMEI number at all.
Can anyone please help me?
hello all,
it means that your radio stack are dead. Currently, We don't have any real method to fix this problem. When the radio stack is error, you can not upgrade it or do anything to make it work. We can only upgrade or downgrade the radio stack if it works. Also if you try to upgrade the radio stack, we realy need to flash the chip using a speceial tool or need the sd card which build in radio stack with we can only flash in bootloaading mode. Howerver, in some case, we can fix it but .... I think it is just lucky or the xda error when battery problem.... in this case, just disconnect the battery few minutes and connect it again by pressing the battery hole.
Regards,
Hoanghon
p.s. I have dead xda. I killed it when I upgraded the RADIO STACK. Therefore, if you are really need to upgrade the radio stack, I recommend use the official upgrade for secuirity. or just upgrade the rom only.
Note:
To eliminating the error, you need to upgrade the rom or the radio stack, you need to check if the rom fix the radio stack or the stack you are trying to upgrade it fix the rom or not.(ie, Tmobile Rom have to use it radio stack built for Tmobile pocket pc...... I know that in some case when we mix between the radio stack and OS it works but I don't think it work propertly. Anyhow the mixing bettween radio stack and OS is very dangerous if it doesn't suppport then you have to reflash the radio stack or rom(the OS is Okay but the keep upgrading the radio stack may cause the radio stack killed)

no way without having special RSU rom update on SD card and run it from bootloader or dissembling the device and reprograming GSM rom on special rom/bios programing socket. (Here on forum is user Cgigate from Toronto CA who can do it but I cant contact him)

Big problem

Hi
I am new here and i have problem
When i turn on my qtek9000, i recieve message Serial V.100.
If i connect USB cable it displays USB instead of Serial.
This happened when i tried to do radio upgrade (through usb hub, sim and sd were also in phone...).
I have 1gb SD card and also card reader mounted in laptop, so transfering files should not be problem.
Can someone help me with step-by-step procedure how to make my qtek work back. I used a lot of search but i am even more confused....
I just remember that when qtek worked Radio was something like 1.0.3.1 and also WWE was writen somewhere....
Probably i should put rom to sd with ntrw (which wersion of both),.......
please help....
might be a dumb question on my part - but have you tried a reset (initially a soft one but then a hard one of course, if nothing else works...) ???
I mean you will at least be able to revert back to the condition 'out of the package'...
Hope everything works out!
jup.both things NOT HELPED
looks like you're stuck in the bootloader mode....
try flashing the rom & the radio rom once again by connecting it to your laptop's usb...
i guess something screwed up while you were upgraging your radio rom...and you'd need to redo it!
Best,
San
can you please write me a procedure?
You might want to check the following thread. Everything is well described.

I have solved problem with Radio upgrade. I am in much better mood now. 8)
Anyway i have 4 more questions.
1.) I am using bluetooth car-instalation Parrot CK3100. I am wondering if is possible to transfer any other sound except telephone conversations to that device. When i had Nokia 9500 i was able to hear every single click,tone,...i made on phone also on car-instalation. I also heard nokia ringtone in car instalation. With qtek i am getting generic car-instalation ringing tone instead of phone ringing. Otherwise primary intention (hands free talking) works fine. I would like to have that to be able to hear voices from various GPS software.
2.) Since QTEK9000 is PDA and phone in single unit I would like to have in car GPS application "always on top". Like previously mentioned i can easily manage my calls with car-instalation. Therefore i would like to run Phone section in background or GPS applications on top.I hope you will understand what i would like to say
3.) I also need in-car holder for qtek. Do you have any reccomendations?
4.)
My settings:
R: 1.04.02
G: 42.37.P8
D: 1.13.64.WWE
Is that ok or should i upgrade?
Stuck in bootloader mode
Hi guys,
Got stuck in bootloader mode following an upgrade attempt. Tried to reflash radio using the files from the pload folder only to get an error saying it's for the wrong device - tried this several times with the same result.
any ideas?
Is there a binary and a tool I can just do a straight upload?
thanks

Thanks DreamTheater
Thanks for your help - unfortunately I got the same message, ie this rom is not meant for this device etc...
Will see O2 can do anything (who's that laughing...???) - was going to buy a new xda mini anyway...!
1. REMOVE your SD/MMC card.
2. Soft/hard reset.
3. Run the upgarde again.
Step 1 above solved my problem.

WM6 upgrade fails, need help, will donate if problem is solved (please help)

After I read http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardUpgrade4
It says The WM6 does not work on PH20A2 (Harrier) (Audiovox PPC-6600 / PPC-6601 / XV6600)/ CDMA device! <-- that is my mistake
My mistake steps:
1. upgrade 2003 2nd edition to WM6 (I see 4 color strip with "NO GSM" at the bottom, stuck in there. The PPC will stop if I remove the battery for a few seconds and put battery back)
2. use mytt <-- may not hurt (I see 4 color strip with "NO GSM" at the bottom, stuck in there. The PPC will stop if I remove the battery for a few seconds and put battery back)
3. Do hard reset, format the PPC (stuck in white screen, then do soft reset. The PPC will ""NOT"" stop if I remove the battery for a few seconds and put battery back)
reflash
Have you tried re-flashing with the original ROM?

What do you mean reflash?
Does it mean that Reinstall the WM6, or install other OS like WM5?
However,Without activesync how can I do that?
OR reflash mean formart?
I try to fomart my ppc, but stuck in the white screen
You got to revert back to WM 2003 SE with your original OS.

I tried to upgrade my win2003 2nd edition in ppc 6600 to WM6, but it seems that WM6 won't work with ppc 6600. Then,
1. I download the WM5 rom from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Helmi
2. Try to reflash the PPC
3. I see that the PPC response
4. Try to do the reset after finished upload rom
5. Four color strip screen & "NO gps" and "5.02... WWE"
6. Try to restart again, and wait, result is the same
7. Try to go to bootloader mode, use mtty, do "set 14 0", "task 28", "task 0", PPC still keep the same. I have tried all reset, hard reset, etc
8. *** Try to reflash the PPC again, I find out that there is no current ROM when the ROM upload program try to read my current PPC condition.
Btw, I post the question to the FAQ too
try to take out first SD Card and SIM CARD from your BA first before connect to your notebook/PC

You did very stupid thing, you have flashed GSM based rom to a CDMA device, the only thing you can do is to use WM2003SE, flash your device with its original or any CDMA (Harrier) based WM2003SE rom
Quick Howto:
Put your device in bootloader mode, put it on the cradle, start the upgrade including radio (the same version can be flashed on top of the previous one), this will fix your device, if it does not then after successful WM2003SE upgrade do the MTTY "set 14 0", "task 28", "task 0".
Keep me posted if you have problem
P.S.
WM5 and WM6 does not work on Harrier (CDMA Blueangel) device, i hope my instructions to help you to have at least usable device

So far, I can use the phone without any problem. Previously, I tried to upgrade my phone because I want to use bluetooth headset to listen music. That can only be done in WM5 or later. Now I reinstall my CDMA version of WM2003. I find out that the bluetooth does not work due to expire of lincese key. Does anyone have any suggestion how I can over come it? I just want my phone back to exact a few day ago. Thanks
thanks
lincese
Someone has posted the attached file and said that it can fix BT license expired error. I have not tried it myself since I dont face such prob, so use it on your own risk.
To use it - extract archive to your PocketPC and run EXE file.
