Noob Topic - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hi
I have just bought a XDA II and have never owned any type of pda before.
I have downloaded a chess game, which when I unzip it has 4 files all starting chessgenius and then ending with either .mips .sa .sh3 and one that says its configuration settings.
Please take pity on such a noob and explain what i do next.
Thanks
Dan

You need the one with the sa which means strongarm.

Thanks for the reply, but I am a total noob (at the moment), what do I do with the .sa file ?
Thanks again
Dan

Dan,
If the file you downloaded is a .cab file, you don't have to unzip it.
Copy it to your XDA (right-click on the active sync icon near the clock on the pc and choose "Explore").
On your XDA, just open the file with the file explorer and it installs the chess program.
Grtz,
Jos

are u sure?
thanx for your help; but does it support windows mobile 5 ? I'm afraid of taking risk to install it !!! need a quick reply plzzz.
I adwise you to make a backup before installing. Make a backup with Sunnysoft Backup Manager or other available software.
I've tried. Works well on WM5.
Default setup is bad. you need to extract cab file in temp.
I've joined the default cab.

thank you buddy ..
Thanx alot; i've extracted your .cab file into TEMP folder on my device, then i've tapped on it to install the cool real one player; i'm happy with it ..
Re: thank you buddy ..
Wow.. Cool stuff..Thanks for sharing, Just got it installed on my Wizard.
Take a little longer to reboot. Able to run the RealOne player now..
Need to try some big files to checkout the performance.
For those who don't know how to extract the .cab file..You can do a search in google like me.. ..................... or try this  ...
1) Start -> Run -> %temp% , to open the temp folder
2) run the xxxx.exe file, a new folder will generate in the temp folder.
3) copy the realplayer.cab inside the new folder into your ppc and install it.
Have fun..
Ops.. did not see the attachment until i login..
I got it, and also learn how to extract the cab file. thanks a lot. have fun.

Copy it to your device. Open file explorer on your device and click on the cab file, and the istallation of the content of the cab file will start!
have tried that but when extracted there is no file with a .cab extension. Ive used file explorer and click on one of the 5 files and just get an error message.
Do not extract anything. Just copy the cab file you posted as is on to your device.
This is an installation file and is not meant to be extracted.
thanks , will give it a go now.
yep , that worked a treat..Now i just need to be able to get tom tom to see port 6 and my life will be ok!!

Installing applications on phone...and T9 input .

I'm struggling... . I have my XDA hooked up to my Vista laptop and everything connects perfectly. Whilst browsing this site I found an iphone skin thing which looks quite impressive. I thought that I'd like to turn my XDA into an iphone so I'd download and install it... . Well, to be honest, I don't really know how to. Are there any idiot-proof guides out there for installing appliations...? I've downloaded the file to my desktop, tried copying it to my program files on my XDA (which works), but when I click on it, it just won't install. Is there some sort of file I need to click on specifically...? Is there a better way of getting this to work...?
Secondly I've been trying to find a T9 input thing. I hate having to use my stylus to send a quick SMS, and would love just to find something which replicates my phone's keypad on the screen, something I could use my fingers on, something on which I could type quickly. Does anyone have any suggestions...?
Thanks very much.
installing pocketpc applications can be don in many ways
2 most common is
1 a cab file which the user click on after transfering it to the pda
2 an exe file which requires to be run of the pc and it use the sync software to copy the cab file to the pda and run it
for t9 try doing a search for phonepad in the forum
not sure if it's compatible with old 2003 but you can give it a go
Thank you for your help! I downloaded this phone pad thing, extracted it from WinRAR to a folder on my desktop and had a look inside. There are no .exe files which I can run from my computer, and no .cab files which I could transfer to my PDA and run.
The first file is setup.xml and then it's a whole series of numbered files which Windows calls 001 file, 002 file, etc... . Any ideas about what I should be doing...? Thank you!

Rather than extract it, you might just want to check whether the phone pad thing itself isn't a .cab
i suspect it is think winrar can assi cabs with it iso files too so dont just look at the icon

Sync your device with ActiveSync. Transfer the cab file to your device. Browse to where you copied the cab file on your device with a file browser (Total Commander, File Explorer, etc.) and then run the cab file (this is within your device, not on your computer).
Welcome to the wonderful world of flashing lol. Im actually suprised that you flashed a rom but haven't read on .cabs yet
Anyway if you have the .cab downloaded to your pc just copy it to your sdcard. Then use file explorer to navigate to where you placed the .cab, select it and it will install. Most cabs will ask if you want to install to device or sdcard, it's that simple. Good Luck
Thanks everyone!!! Im hooked!

you could also just drag the file from ur comp to sdcard. then open file explorer->tap the cab file and it'll take u to an install page.

if you can run the .exe in a virtual pc, even without active sync, it 'should' install the cabs and such into a subfolder of /program files/, ready to be installed on th ephone next time it connects (which of course it wont). you can then browse to that folder, find the arm cab, and copy that to your sd card.
try 7zip and open up the exe and see if the cab is in there just extract it thats what ive done with a few things
Thank you guys.
