Pocket PC Techs Battery Upgrade Review - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

Long time lurker, first time poster.
Just a quick post about the battery replacement kit sold over at http://www.pocketpctechs.com/
Two words - it's awesome.
The guide is extremely well written, and the tools are nothing short of perfect for the job. The process couldn't have gone more smoothly. Pocket PC Techs r0x0rz my s0x0rz.
I'll post more impressions in this thread on the battery life, after I've had a few days to test it out.

Newby Help!!!

Have just got my hands on my first wizard.
Phone came off ebay with a VERY dead battery which I managed to get going with the help of a 9v battery out of my smoke alarm.
I am now stuck deciding which wm6.1 rom to update it with. I have searched through the forum and to be honest I have given myself a headache and I feel no further forward.
Any help or pointers would be GREATELY appreciated.
I would rather have a generic type rom
I've also just got my hands on a Wizard with a dead battery, thanks for the tip about zapping it with a 9V battery, saves me having to wait for my new battery to arrive off ebay.
I found this page of the wiki useful for deciding what ROM to choose.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard_Compatible_ROMS
I haven't upgraded yet myself, but I went by rating and popularity and support for the G4.
I put the slim_19199 rom on and all is running well...........
I tried kick start the battery using the butchered USB cable method first (as shown on youtube) and got nowhere with it.

Battery Life Problem with HD2 - Help Reqd

So I finally got rid of my iPhone 3G (jailbroken on T-Mobile), and got an HD2 instead. I've always liked Windows Mobile phones (and had most iterations), and since now there is finally some capacitative goodness on WM, I jumped on the opportunity.
And I'm regretting it already.
I'm hoping that somebody here has some suggestion that my two days of thread searching, and experimenting didn't cover.
The problem is, yay, .... the damn battery.
I left it on the charger from totally empty to completely full at 2AM. At 8AM, it was down to 85%. Ten minutes of reading e-mails, 74%. The thing is really not usable in this state.
Here are all the things I checked already:
It runs the latest T-Mobile ROM and radio (the one that just came out a few days ago).
Latest version of .NET (3.5.9).
No push e-mail, e-mail checking once per hour, weather checking once per hour.
Strong 3G coverage area, still tried out WMLongLife anyway (with no difference).
Did several cycles of full discharge, recharge.
Always check task manager, not leaving programs running.
Nothing else is set to go online - Live is disabled.
Screen brightness is set at 30%.
All charges done via wall charger.
I read every post I could find, especially fun the ones where people get 4 days of standby, and 6+ hours of heavy use. Short of loading the ARTEMIS ROM, I exhausted all options I could find. And really, it seems like people get decent performance from the stock ROM, so I'd like to stick with that for the moment.
What am I missing?
So frustrating. I can see how this sort of thing would make the average "just user" go run for the Android or Apple hills. No wonder we get stuck with restrictive babysitting technology, when others can't get their **** together. Spend $450 on a phone that can't make it through a half day of reasonable use? Argh!!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
same here
i have all the same problems my batt just sucks i figure i have to just by a new one
hey man, i was like you at first too. all my mates had iphones (i dislike apple in general) i didnt want one. At the time o2 (uk) didnt stock android phones and i had a sony x1 previously. So, i got the hd2 and...like you said was disapointed.
Changed the rom to a custom one here at xda (hdowners btw) which lasts 1.5 days (heavy usage)...never seems to get 2 full days when i use it alot.
installed a few different browsers (opera 9.7 and 10)
installed morphgear (with some amazing landscape skins)
fpsece (i found time crisis to be the only actual playable game)
coreplayer
and found it a awesome phone...changed my views on it. Try some custom roms and see what you think...usually you will go mad installing themes, skins, apps...just go wild and keep the ones you really like/work in a seperate folder. Then reflash and install the best only...thats how i done it and i now love this phone
good luck, im sure the rest of the forum will give you some advice.
wayandrs: The main thing that will help is by upgrading the ROM even if it is to stock 1.66 (the latest UK one available) then you notice a large difference and even more so with some of the cooked ones. Other things to note are the WiFi, make sure it doesn't be left on (and only turn it on if you need it) it proper drains the battery. Without knowing your habbits with your phone it is very hard to come up with decent suggestions that hasn't already been posted elsewhere.
I can safely say I get 2-3 days use out of my device but then I don't use it all that much (anymore), don't forget as it is a new toy for you, you will keep playing with it seeing what it can do, this will soon die down (as it always does) then it will be better.
there must be something wrong with your device or battery.
mine lasts for about 3-4 days while middle use. i think for such a powerful and huge device, this is more than respectable.
heavy use...mh...i would say it lasts minimal 2 days, sometimes more.
did you write a complain to t-mobile?
DN41
The battery will improve after a week or so .
Note : charging your battery the first time for only 6hours isn't much , the first time that i charged my battery i left it charging for 24 hours.
Updating to the latest ROM and Radio helps .
I have two suggestions:
1) Take your phone back to where you bought it and let them deal with it. I get at least a full day with heavy use which is to be expected from a high end device with a 4.3 inch screen. I spent a few dollars on a car charger and an extra wall charger for work, sorted.
2) If you want help on these forums leave out the useless complaining about what a rotten device you have. I think I speak for many contributors of this forum when I say that these kind of posts are getting old and wearisome. You will be more likely to get polite replies with inteligent suggestions if you simply state the problem without moaning about the horrible mistake you made in being seduced into buying an HD2. I have purchased phones that I simply did not care for. I returned them.
First step: Flash a decent ROM with most of the performance/battery tricks in there already. Many of these ROMs are constructed from the best (often most battery efficient) parts of multiple ROMS.
Touch-X, Energy, Artemis, CleanEx, etc. All are excellent (though I favour Touch-X myself for a great utility/preformance/battery balance).
Second step: Flash a good Radio that works well in your area but also works well with the ROM/has decent battery life. You'll need to research this for your chosen ROM.
I use the Korean radio in UK. Good quality/signal/battery life.
Run it for a few days, charging to full and emptying the battery before recharging to full again. Do this for 3/4 days at least.
Those changes alone got me upto 2.5 days standby and 4 hours usage (thats movie playing for 4 hours with 100% backlight in a hotel room). Good for a smartphone and longer than my friends IPhones.
Other small programs like WMLongLife, adjusting down the backlight automatically, added another .5 days to standby (though not much to active use life).

Yes, sorry I fell back on the usual retoric.
I do wonder though if when someone buys a new 'Toy' that they dont hammer it to start with for the 'joy' and never think of the consequences.
I like you, no matter which phone I own, being a businessman and needing maximum performance have a charger at my bedside (the phone is my alarm) and also connect it to the car charger when driving.
I wonder if many of the people that move up from a basic Nokia phone (or similar that can last a week) realise what is involved in powering all the functions they require?
Please don't quote iPhone as it dunt do half!
try elegencia rom v 8.5 and reply back
I use the stock rom 1.66 from the beginning and check my mail automatically every 30 minutes. Now and then I check some websites and download cabs and use HSDPA/3G and WIFI if available. My battery is 100% in the morning and 70 percent in the evening. Not bad at all. The first 12 times I fully charched the battery during the night.
I use Bandswitch, which automatically disables my connection within 30 seconds. This is the most important and useful tip! You don't need a custom ROM to solve the battery drain issue.

+1 - Lovely ROM
it looks like you have not a windows phone before
Thanks.
Thanks for the ROM suggestions. I'll try a few more days of deep cycling the battery to see if that helps - if not, I guess I'll try a custom ROM.
And yea, to those 'get a life' and 'don't complain about Windows phones' posts, whatever. I've owned Windows Mobile phones since they first came out, and it's just frustrating that the out-of-the box usability hasn't gotten any better to this day. Looks at the cool people that actually manage some constructive feedback - they are who make XDA forums great. Thanks guys!
A new 1200 battery is 15 pounds (the official from HTC) as a backup. I personaly have bought the extended battery 2400 and it is great. The default battery doesn't last the full day for me because I use it constinuosly as mp3 player , brownsing and video player. I mean, you have options.
ROM
I'll be trying the Elegancia ROM.
That is, once I find a ROM with 2.8 SPL that works on my 1024 version of the H2, to reflash mine so I can get HSPL to work to flash.
I've always really liked Windows Mobile for its flexibility and massive base of developers ... on the flip side, I've been screwing around with this thing for several days now, trying to get a phone that can last through a day. Ahhh, the bittersweet experience that is WM.
I get at most 2 days combined cycle out of my stanard battery and i've had my phone for about 10 days. It came with the stock 1.66 rom but i've run through the tips and tweaks threads so the phone ui is faster and a bit more usable. One of those is a replacement task manager that disables smart minimize in favour of actually closing programs. I've also set the weather software to update every 3 hours because tbh you don't need it to be any more often than that. I do use the wifi alot but i do turn it off when i'm not using the phone. i have also noticed with my phone is if the wifi is connected to an access point for more than 5 minutes it will automatically disable the 3G connection and turn it back on when the wifi is disabled.
for the first couple of days i was completely discharging the battery and then charging it for about 12 hours. this seems to have been the most beneficial. i also will not put it on charge unless it really needs it.
hi, from experience, 3G medium usuage.. 4/5 a day.
If you disconect the 3G connection when not using, it will help.
And of course if you go on GSM instead, one day is not difficult..
battery killer :
1) constant 3G activity
2) Watching video. Worst, video on 3G !
3) games, especially the 3Ds ones or high on processing like the Tower simulation game.
4) bright screen
5) bluetooth
From my experience, from a fresh flash, my battery improves as I get to use it longer and longer.
take a look at your data sync like weather and stock and also check the social networking sync.

just switched from a droid x

.... and i gotta say im LOVING it . Im up , rooted , custom rom and theme in less than an hour . The screen is AMAZING . Never realized how washed out my X looked . Just wanted to say hello , and hopefully we can share some good times together
Ya i was close to chooseing a x myself but at teh end this had a better screen and faster hardware plus imo a better form factor. Enjoy the phone things will heat up soon after 2.2 gets released.
Same here. Wanted the X because it had better accessories (at the time) and was, well....bigger.
The downside, of course, was that otorola being dickish about the bootloader.
The Fascinate pretty much made up my mind the moment it hit the shelves. The downside being Samsung's notorious penchant for delayed or non-existent updates...
yeah , but im pretty confident we will get that update this month (or maybe optimistic is a better word). And i know the devs will have it to us in roms just as soon as they can. A much smaller community for fascinate users so far ,got to tell the droid x forum goodbye haha
Quick uestion you guys might have an answer to without swimming through threads. After installing superpower on my DX , my battery life was AMAZING . like heavy usage from noon to four in the morning got me down to like 40%. This battery is larger , and i have superpower installed again... and just lost 20% in an hour....while sitting and watching Dexter haha .
Any secret tips or anything?
My experience is there's too much mumbo jumbo in getting the most out of a battery. I will say my initial experience with my Fascinate's battery life was borderline poor. I was generally charging my battery twice a day with what I considered moderate use. It felt like 2 hours of heavy use could finish me right off - low battery warning at night would mean a dead phone in the morning. The monitor was reporting my display was eating 80% of my battery life, and it felt like just looking at the thing would tick down my indicator by 10%,
Anyway, I [hope] I figured out where I went wrong the first time. My instinct when I got the phone, which I received activated with battery in, was to use it as little as possible until I could get it on a charger. I think this was the exact opposite of what I should have done, and cumy battery experience nearly in half.
To remedy this, I ran my battery down to completely dead, ignoring all the warnings until it actually kicked out. After that, I charged the phone (which takes about 3 hours on the AC charger) and then left it charging overnight. In my case I did this with the phone off and the battery icon displayed.
[I read that you want about two hours of overcharging -- but please do it in a cool place, letting your battery get too warm will cause it to oxidize faster, speeding the permanent damage that lowers the cieling output on LiOn batteries.]
The thinking here is that the battery system itself isn't very intelligent. It doesn't know the exact point where the battery will run out, nor is it necessarily certain when the battery is fully charged. It's recommended that once a month you fully power cycle the battery to retrain the system to understand what its limits are.
That was it. Now I get what I consider to be acceptable battery life. My display tends to eat about 50% of my battery life over a day, and I can actually use the phone without watching the battery tick down. I only tend to get a day of use, but I could push it to two or maybe three if I weren't so addicted to the thing.
I am not using any battery apps except for the Touchwiz task manager widget on my home screen.
Interesting , i have heard that approch before for my dx but didnt think it could possibly work. Now that i have heard it twice i will definitely give it a try . Its kinda funny that the thing that is so beautiful ( the screen ) is the death of me ... but isnt that always the case?? haha . Ill give it a whirl and report back . Thanks Soba .

yeah man , it made since . i worked at radioshack several years ago , and we told people to let their rechargeable batteries run all the way down before they recharged , unless they were nicad.
but just for the record this method ABSOLUTELY WORKS . from 11am to now 7:20pm , with moderate usage , im now at 75%. Thats pretty damn acceptable if you ask me . haha.
thanks a lot for the step by step , and would suggest you make a thread on it . Because if you do it step for step , it works like a champ .Thanks again .

[TIPS] 16hrs+ on stock battery

Ok, so ive been playing with my phone that i got a little over 4 months ago. I use to sell sprint so im pretty quick and finding the ins and outs and what works and what doesnt.
So ive been trying to maximize my battery life.
So over the past week ive been playing with roms and kernels.
On a one day test running the following build setup I was able to run 16hrs plus on the Stock Battery.
The configuration is as follows.
Kernel 15
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876590
Sprint Lovers Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153
Bloat Freezer (Locks sprint bloatware)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.bloatfreezer&feature=search_result
I used Battery Monitor Widget (to monitor and document mA used on Batt)
https://market.android.com/details?id=ccc71.bmw&feature=search_result
Now like what i was saying ive been trying to maximize batt life.
So on the first day alone i unplugged my phone at around noon at a full 100% charge.
Throughout the day i did moderate use on my phone I.E. facebook, web browsing, download or two, screen on and off like 25 times an hr.
I didnt need to plug my phone in for a charge until almost 8 am the next morning.
This is only a one day test, i do work ten hr shifts at my job which covered MOST of that time. Plus sleeping.
Next week i will put down the real testing. Starting monday ill make sure my phone is charged 100% at the time that i wake up and ill document here what my results are day to day to see if this actually makes it worth the while to root and setup your phone the way i did to maximize battery time.
If you have any questions please post before and ill try to find the answer.
DISCLAIMER :
The projects listed below are not my projects they are put on the public network from xda-devs and android market. I do not assume responsibility for any damage you cause to your own phone. This post is a guide and is not backed by any scientific research this is personal testing. Individual results may happen. Do not make any aggressive post replies or they will be asked to be removed by a MOD.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I will start to update next week starting monday on a weeks worth of testing.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST..
Ive give all credit to all the devs that have developed/posted the kernels/roms/and apps that i have listed above without there hard work none of us would be happy with our phones ever and would be under control of big brother..

Yet another battery drain victim - Problems with new battery too

Hi everybody,
I've been following this great site for a long time, but this is my first post.
I'm one of the unhappy owner of a Nexus 6P with severe battery drainage. I've read plenty of threads on this topic both on this site and others, but some issues are still unclear to me.
The battery performance had been worsening since last September, with an increasing pace up to the point that last month the phone would turn off between 76% and 45%. The drainage was also extremely fast, going from full charge to 70% in half an hour of medium usage.
So I finally made up my mind and decided to change the battery. Last week I brought it to an electronic shop that I trust and they replaced the battery. I hadn't read about the fake batteries yet, and I didn't warn nor asked the guy at the shop about them - but as I said I think he's reliable.
Up to this point, nothing new.
I've had the new battery for three days, but the problems remain, same as before. I am quite puzzled, as I think that even with a fake battery there's no way to get same performance as before. The drainage is as bad as before and so the early shutdown (I reached once the 33%, but still not good and may have happened also with the old battery). AccuBattery says the battery health is 26%, but it is still a rough estimate as it had only 4 cycles.
So my questions are:
1. Do I need to wait some more days for the new battery to adjust before losing every hope?
2. As I was travelling, I could only wipe the cache. I'm gonna try a factory reset, could it help?
3. Do I need to take some extra precautions in order not to "burn" the new battery? As it is lasting as long as the old one, I need to recharge it every 3h more or less or use a battery pack (that I hate) and I think it is not good.
I cannot ask a replacement from Google as I live outside the US.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
@Paul_test even the new batteries can have issues with the 6p. I went through a couple from eBay before I got one that was solid. The shops needs to test the phone with some battery drain apps first to make sure before they put it back together.

Thanks Exodusche. Unfortunately, I was in Spain at the time and they returned it to me the day I was leaving, so I hadn't the time to test.
So the "fake" batteries are complete crap? not just lower capacity I guess.
Did anyone come up with an explanation for this drainage problem? I mean, is it an hardware issue?

If your on Oreo shouldn't have any drain unless your using apps like Facebook. I ordered so far 4 batteries from eBay and only the first one had issues. The rest preforming close to stock. If your unlocked an rooted can get app like wakelock and check if have any rogue apps. But if your having early shutdowns no brainer that it's the battery.
About 2 weeks ago I order a battery from Aliexpress (it was about $13) and did the replacement myself yesterday. It took about 3 hours of sweating and swearing - the videos on Youtube make it look SO easy. Part of the problem was that I didn't have the right tools but I improvised and managed to open the phone with very minor marks.
Regarding the battery, I bought the one that seemed the most popular (with 350+ 5 star reviews) but it is definitely not "legit" as the KC Certification number was "XX-XXXX-XXXX" and it is ever so slightly smaller than the original one, but there is a fabrication date on it and it indicates it was manufactured a few months ago, so that's a good thing I guess. The capacity is estimated at ~90% (of the advertised 3.450mAh) and the Screen On time varies from 4.5-5 hours, so I'm pretty happy with that, considering that I would get 2-2.5 hours with the same kind of usage on the old one. A minor inconvenience would be that the % indicator is not as accurate as before, for example jumping from 80 to 76% after I pick up the phone and use it for a while, but this might get better after the initial charge cycles, as well as the "health". Also, the phone is usable to the last 1%, no more sudden death.
So if you're not satisfied with the one you have now, I definitely recommend you get one from Aliexpress, as it comes (almost) directly from the manufacturer, unlike eBay or Amazon where you could pay double.
And maybe try to install it yourself?
Hi all. I admin a group of Nexus 6p Italian users. I quote all replies to the OP questions.
I just would like to add an information. I know some 6p owners that changed their barretu with this one:
https://www.amazon.it/dp/B01BHYLUUQ/ref=pe_3310731_185740161_TE_item
So far, they are happy. Of course you have to consider to change the battery by yourself.
The nexus 6p is still a solid device if you find a good battery. Good luck.

I was having some doubts about installing it as I don't have the right tools, but if you say you did even without them I can try as well. Also, my phone has already been opened so it may be easier now. I had a bad experience with a laptop display using Aliexpress, so I'd rather try first with the one suggested by luck.giak that is also cheap. Thanks!

I'll definitely consider it, as it is also quite cheap. I totally agree that it would still be a very nice phone, but these battery problems make it unusable. I'll give it one last try. Thanks!

Your welcome, be careful to open you device. You need time and patience.
To be completely honest, I'm reporting to you experiences of other users. When I had the same issue three moths ago I contacted Amazon that refunded me completely. My 6p was 1.5 years old and I was upset to change that phone so quickly (according to my standard). I considered the barety replacement by myself but finally I have to say that the refund was the right option --> Now I'm more than happy with my new BQ Aquarius X2 pro.
