Duplicate Menu Items & File Explorer Disappeared - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Good afternoon,
Migrated from IPAQ to XDA ii just on a month ago.
I have duplicate entries in menu (which I can't move or delete) and File Explorer has gone off into cyberspace?? Happened on the first day I had the unit and a hard reset restored it. Am reluctant to do a hard reset again as many progs are on system as well as data. Any clues or suggestions??
Thanks in advance.

Do a backup of your device. You might want to check out Sprite Backup as it will allow selective backup and restore.
It's something you should be doing anyway in case you get a random or unwanted hard reset. Just do a restore and you're all set.

this happened to me too.
i suggest exploring the device with active sync and look for file explorer in windows folder, then just make a shortcut to it and cut and paste that shortcut to the windows/start menu/programs and it should be accesible again. hope this helps.

People, I'd recommend using this duplicate file finder to deal with unnecessary files on your hard drive. It has many functions, user-friendly interface, safety options and 100% efficiency.

Imate and PermanentSave

got yesterday my imate. Wonderful device.
I have one question.
What does PermanentSave program (in Setting/System) perform (the manual is silent of this)?
I checked the 4 box for contact, calendar, appointment and task and now every time I soft reset start a syncronization process.
Does PermanentSave saves files into the Storage memory or in the Expanded Memory non generally accessible?
When and how can I do a restore?
Another question: Imate went to me with a file and a directory in the storage memory
the file:
RilNty_log date 1/9/03 of 953 bytes
the directory
PerSaveBackup
containing the following files
AppointmentProtectKey date 1/9/03of 0 byte
ConnectionProtectKey date 1/9/03 of 0 byte
TaskProtectKey date 1/9/03 of 0 byte
ContactsProtectKey date 1/9/03 of 0 byte
also after a softreset and a sync of permanetSave those files doesn't change neither date neither bytes.
Does the saving comes in theextendend rom not visible?
thanks
Anyone knows how to delete this folder (PerSaveBackup) in the Storage area?

I don't use permanent save; to disable it I removed the related files in the \windows\startup folder; there are 4 files whose name is something like aflashman.lnk,cflashman.lnk, etc
I do not remember exactly the names but the files in startup are so few that you cannot make mistakes; they all have the same icon.
At this point you can delete the directory in the storage simply using file manager.
Softreset first.
I did it sometimes and it worked.
Ciao
It was me, sorry

IMHO it's very important to use the permanent save feature because you can do a hard reset and get back ALL your Task, Contacts, Calendar appointments and conection settings.
All the data it's saved in the Storage Flash Ram.
The only thing you need to do to recover from a hard reset is check again the four checkboxes in Permanet save and ALL your data (Task, Contacts, Calendar appointments and Conection Settings) comes to live another time.
A Sprite BAckup solution it's better because can restore ALL your data and applications, but at no cost you can be safer using the Permanent save feature.
Only my 2cents....

Im already using Sprite Backup that is why I no longer need the permanent save feature of the XDAII. The PerSaveBackup folder in the Storage is becoming to be annoying since I cant delete it.
Thanks.

pim.vol is locked

Although I have been able to copy this file in the past, recently I began getting a message that says it is locked because another process is using a portion of it. And this when there are no running processes on the device (according to Spb Pocket Plus). Anyone have an idea on what may be accessing the file?
Thanks!

Maybe a today calendar plugin like todayagenda, pocket breeze etc.. disable them thru today\options then try copying again.
My question to you would be are you using resco order the default file explorer. only the default explorer will let you copy this file. resco and other file explorer are guarded against this due to it being a
"safe " file . Good luck
...it must be something else because i can copy it with gsplayer while it isn't my default file-explorer. Even with pocketinformant opened it's not locked for me. Can you see with i.e. SK Tools processes if one of the program/system processes uses pim.vol?...
meschle,
I had thought of that and removed Calendar from my Today screen Items. I had no other plugins that would utilize PIM data. But thank you for the suggestion. BTW, I also want to thank you for some very good information I've learned from reading your posts. And I'm also running your Black Skins on my Today screen and dialer.
kinmont,
That was it, thank you! I had been using Resco. As soon as I switched to MS Explorer all was well again. And even though I'm backing up with Spb Backup I still like having the actual pim.vol file in a couple of places as backups.
Regards,
Tref
p.s. Thanks to you also Krinkiespijer for trying to help!
Try to DL a taskmanager program and cancel out anything that maybe running. OR try to clear out any currently running programs under start>setting>system>memory>running programs
Also, if you have a backup copy of the pim.vol file, rename the existing file to pimold.vol and copy the one you want into the "my device" directory
I try to keep an updated copy of the pim.vol file on my storage card.
Anytime before upgrading my phone, I copy the pim.vol file over to the storage card, upgrade the phone, rename the new file to pimold.vol and copy the one from the storage card back into the default directory.
Hope this helps.
It was Resco's refusal to copy the file that was the problem. Nothing was open or using it. MS File Explorer copied it fine. And yes, keeping a copy on the storage card is excellent advice. So is keeping a copy of the corresponding .pst file on the PC somewhere safe.
Cheers

HOW TO SAVE PHONE BOOK IN JAMIN TO M-CARD

I AM USE IMATE JAMIN TEL ME ANY SOFTWARE FOR BACKUP MY PHONE BOOK IN MEMORY CARD WHEN I HARD RESET PHONE AND I RESTORE PHONE BOOK FROM BACKUP PLZ HELP ME ON THIS...............
You will start confusing others with your "M-Card". The safest way to do so is to use Outlook to sync your contacts. Else, do you backup using SPB backup and do a restore after hardreset, but that will defeat the purpose of hardreset.. whatever your reason is.
I asked the same question some time ago for the same reason, levenum gave me the solution.
"In the built in file explorer select "show all files" option. Then in the root of the device you will see a file named 'pim.vol'. Just copy that to your SD."
Mine for some reason said it could not copy as the file was in use, however it let me rename it, once renamed I copied it.
To recover simply replace the new 'pim.vol' with the saved one. Rename the new 'pim.vol', dump your saved 'pim.vol' and then soft reset, contacts will not show until reset. Then delete the 'pim.vol' you changed.

Start Menu - now I've done something stupid!

It was bound to happen... I did something stupid today. I deleted the "Settings" item from \Windows\Start Menu\.
Can someone tell me the easiest way to re-create it?
I'm hoping not to restore from my most recent backup as I've made quite a few changes since then I'd rather not have to re-do. Thanks.
In my TyTN its only an empty folder called "Settings". But it's in ROM (can't be deleted) so I don't know how did you delete it?
I just clicked on it in File Explorer and hit delete! Don't know what I was thinking...
Anyway, I ended up doing a backup just now. Then I did a hard reset and copied the file to my Storage Card. Restored my most recent backup and copied the file from Storage to the proper place. Seem to be back in business.
I would think such a file would be in ROM too...
Try using a proper file explorer like GSFinder, go into start menu and make empty folder called Settings

Sprite Settings

Hi. I am using the Sprite backup which I can download from the HTC site (SEA region phone). I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to backup ONLY calls/messages/contacts, e-mail would also be nice. Basically I want to keep my usage/call history/exchanges kept but I want system settings and such gone since I want to hard reset to see if I can get rid of certain funky behavior.
Thanks in advance to any who might be able to help (and even those who wish they could but are as clueless as I am).
Easy n' faster
I like this one, easy to use. You can backup & restore (Contacts including pictures, appt, messages, call logs, tasks, notes, etc). It has an option named "custom", so you can backup & restore files and even folders. Just copy zip file to your device, then unzip and run exe file. You won't see an icon in programs folder so I suggest you send a shortcut to programs folder. Enjoy.
