is the XDAII java enabled and can i download java games that play on other phones
thanks

No, but O2 promised this at device launch, so it may be possible that there will be a Java Virtual Machine at some point in the future. I wouldn't hold your breath though.
JV-Lite 2 is coming with NetFront 3.1 for WM2003, it is working very nice with my iMate. But it only uses JAZ files not JAR. So, I hope if anybody can guide me of how to convert JAR file to JAZ.

I have an XDA II running MS PocketPC version 4.20.0 (2003) Rom version is 1.52.00WWE.
I have reviewed all previous posts on the JVM subject and appreciate the XDA II is new and therefore may not be as many users out there who have tried a JVM yet. Hopefully someone can help me.
I want to run a pJava application that was built using a Standard Java 2 complier for deployment on the pJava environment. That works well on an IPAQ running Jeode. However the IPAQ Jeode does not run on the XDA. I am awaiting a response from Esmertec as to whether they have something suitable. I tried Ewe but that does not work. I can purchase J9 to try but before I do, I wonder has anyone got a JVM to run on XDAII, Windows PPC 2003 sucessfully. The app loads over the air so happy to have some one point at it if they have this configuration (XDAII MS 2003)and a JVM installed and running.
TIA
David
what about the one from sun ?
or is that java1 ?
Update on some progress.
I cannot find as such a JVM on the Sun site in Archive (EOL) that can be installed on PocketPC 200X. If I am missing something please advise.
On IBM site could not get past the login for trial S/W
Ewe did not work.
Creme did run and has my application half working so best so far. Lots of bugs that were not there with Jeode on IPAQ.
Could anyone send me the Sun JVM?
regards
David
Running VMs
I had Ewe running fine on the XDAII last month, this month I switched to Superwaba as it works closer to the way standard J2ME is supposed to. Haven't gotten around to testing custom code on it yet but the samples load without a hitch. The Jeode is certified so runs even smoother and I have heard of people using it on this device, plan to switch to that soon.
. . and oh yeah, the EOL stuff from sun won't get you far, it's ancient.
The IBM packages are great and even were when I tried them 2 yrs ago.
But yes, their downloading process is a pain, I had to pick up half a GB of Websphere Studio Device Developer from their site to get what I needed.
If you're really serious about your work I can send it to you on a CDROM.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/2209.html
somethings comming which may make it easier
Appreciate the input. Making some progress with Creme, issues with Jeode. Will need to migrate away from pJava going forward but enough progress for the moment. Again appreciate the support.
regards
David
As with so many of the JVMs they say:
We offer Redmond Decaf for hardware manufacturers

which means it's unlikely to appear on Handango as a cheap download.
O2 UK, in their original marketing for the device, said that a JVM would be released with a ROM update in the near future, however they seem to have removed all references to this from their website. Surely there's a legal issue here: promising something to encourage people buy a product and then reneging on the contract. What would happen if they had said "if you buy this product we'll send you £50 in the post in a couple of months' time" and did the same thing.
Word from O2 is Rom versions above 1.6 comes with JVM supporting MIDP but apparently not pJava :-(
does anybody have the cab file which include the java in the o2 rom for xda2 ?
because my qtek2020 rom dont have it and i would like to have java support on my device
I wouldn;t waste your time, the JVM is purely for MIDlets, which are generally rubbish.
well i got some old java applications that i would like to mess with if i can get them to run on a xda2
Hey there, now that I've got my shiney new XDA Exec, with its VGA Screen and inbuilt Wi-fi I want to have a play with the Terminal Services Client to control my PC...I'm pretty sure that's what it can be used for right?
Well anyway from what I've read TSC can connect to (among other things) Win XP Pro computers with remote desktop enabled...however my computer only has XP Home so I can't do this, so can anyone recommend an alternative (possibly better?) program that I can use to control my XP Home PC using my XDA Exec....
cheers!
VNC (free)
GoToMyPC (not free)
There is more information in the "terminal services full screen" thread in this forum.
I have been using GoToMyPC for a long time. It's a subscription-based service. But I am happy with it. Very stable and functional. And full-screen.
prob with those apps is, terminal services connects to all modern windows operating systems and no extra software is needed, im not running round the country installing vnc onto everything, if its already got RDC/Terminal Services intergrated. On my work network i have access to 36k+ machines, yer 36,000 machines. all 2000,XP,2003, the other 30k machines are still NT or 98, upgrades aint a overnight thing!!!
so you see, not an option im afraid
*edit* what really grinds me is that i would have thought it was obvious to M$ that fullscreen should be an option, but as with the diabolical MSNM, the most obvious upgrades never appear, surlly in that groups aint a hard thing to do. and turn the bloody beeping off when ppl sign in.
Obvious things strategicly lost??
use www.logmein.com man its freakin great and you can use for free
if you put your device in landscape it is a clean view too
z2remote2pc works a little better than logmein, I think. A little more control of the desktop with z2. LogMeIn is nice though.
but do these apps use the RDC protocol ? i cannot amend 30k+ machines just to do remote desktop, it has to be compatible else its pretty useless to me soz
Carnivor, I presume your request is satisfied?
Why on earth 30,000 machines? Heyzus!
What PDA are you using?
V
30k machines is roughly the number of client machines the company i work for has. i have access to them all via TS, not that i need them all, i mainly access a handful of desktops that are mine, and the clients servers.
its quite handy to be able to wifi my desktop in the room next door when im standing at a rack in the server room as there is nothing but racks in there and an additional desktop in there would get easilly spotted.
im on a Jasjar btw, happy to test your app wink wink**
and i have VS 2005, is it poss for a 2003 project to be loaded into VS 2005 and compiled??? if you aint got it yet its a possibility
ps, ohh yes, im satisified, its what should have been done on theyre attempt ( M$ )
Carnivor - I have Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2. I'm waiting on RC1 because the tools I use in Beta 2 don't work properly on the WM5 emulator. As soon as I get a new version of VS2005, I'll sort through the WM5 issues and bang out a preliminary version for you guys to try.
The current version should still work nicely even on Wm5, but only in Portrait QVGA. However, a full landscape VGA version should follow soonish.
If you've got a spare VGA PDA, send it my way! I'm desperate
V
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727
thats the version i have
I use Visual Studio 6 and 2005 at work, and was wondering what development environment you use for writing applications etc, for the Exec. I installed WinCE C++ v4.0 yesturday and the .exe built for the ARM processor wouldn't run!
Dev env for WMobile 5
Visual Studio 2003 or 2005 work fine.
(you can get the "academic" version if you are a student for less than £50)
with 2003 you have to make smartdevice projects and write them in c#
in 2005 you should be able to do MFC and win32 in c++ as well
Thanks.
Which ever IDE you use, you need to download Pocket PC SDK from MS (it's free) for Window Mobile 5.
You can also use eVC 4, but you need to install SP 4 for it, and PPC SDK for Windows Mobile 2003 (it won't recognise WM5 SDK).
Sorry to be a pain but I have not written software targeted at WinCE/WM before.
I have installed eVC4, Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 SDK, SP3 and SP4. I can debug with the Pocket PC Emulator fine, but when I try to debug or install in release mode on the O2 Exec (which is connected) I get the following warning dialog: "CE platform pocket pc 2003 does not match remote os version 501". :?
I do not want to write software for the PPC using .NET (although I write in C# at work, as well as MFC/ATL C++), as in my opinion the PPC isn't fast enough for managed code. So how can I write apps' for the O2 Exec using eVC4 :?:
Hi VZ800!
You are right about .NET, those apps are more sluggish then native code.
Don't worry about the warning, just click yes, then you going to get another warning, something about CPU type, click yes on that one two.
The eVc *****es because it's not familiar with WM5 devices, but your program will run fine. In fact, I used eVc 3, to write programs for WM5 that were backwards compatible with WM 2002 and they worked fine (although eVc 3 can't connect to the device so I had to copy the exe manually).
The debugger should work as well, though I try to avoid it since it some times takes a long time to connect.
If all you need is some debug prints, no watches or brake points, you might be better off writing to a file with the old fopen, fprintf, funcs. which come in both ASCII and Unicode (wfprintf) versions.
Good luck!
Thanks, I'll give it another go tomorrow.
I need help - I want to start writing programs for my Tilt. Looking through the posts it seems the C++ is the way to go. I found a bunch of nice tutorials on the web on how to program in C++ but not now to write a program for a pocket pc.
Specifically I need help with which programs to download.
Im looking for a list like this of exactly what I need to get
1. Microsoft embedded Visual C++ 4.0.
2. Microsoft embedded Visual C++ SP4
3. Microsoft pocket pc 2003 sdk.msi
4. Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 Device Emulator
or what ever
Thanks I tried to figure this out on my own but got frustrated after installing like 7 different programs. Seems like you should only need 1 program but it seems like you need to download a bunch.
Also with the Embedded Visual C++ program I dont see where to enter your code - like open workspace or something?

WHAT kind of applications you are trying to write?
Do you need to write a device driver for your PDA?

You should be able to do it with visual studio and the emulator, im not 100% sure though, I only know a limited amount of Java.
Most phones support .net/C#/Java, so pick a language
What I want to write
Just some fun stuff =
One idea I had is a generic sound simulator, tie buttons to different sound - .wav files; animal sounds, machine sounds, phasor blasts, drum kit, theme music like - http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/illuminated/a5bf/
I want to have it look nice too with decent graphics.
i suggest to use Visual Studio 2005 or 2008.
It's simplest way to start (and continue) to write programs.
Both native and NET technologies are supported. C++ and C# available.
Both VS versions are coming with integrated Device Emulator with WM5(VS2005) and WM6(VS2008) images for PDA/PDAPhone/SP and remote debugger for real PDA/PDAPhone/SP devices.
If you are using VS2005/2008. Download the latest Windows Mobile 6 SDK (Standard and Pro) for the best Emulation.

Dave
but c# only works with .net
where c++ works with win32(native) microMFC(Native) and .net

yes, С# is for NET only. This language appeared together with NET technology as alternative to Java after breakup with SUN
C# is closer to BASIC than C++. I, personally, don't recommend C#. Ths "strange" language is for lazy people. Almost nothing left of C++ and its ideology.
Visual Studio 2008 Pro trial version
Thanks for you advice - i deleted all that embedded C++ stuff - was way too confusing, must have had like 8 programs installed and still was not working - I like the idea of just 3 things the visual studio and the 2 WM6 SDKs
Im going to try the visual studio 2008 - there is a trial version of it for 90 days
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/products/aa700831.aspx
Would i be better off with the 2005 version as Im using Xp not Vista on my main computer. Should I get the Try Visual Studio "Team System" 2008 - Trial Software or just stick with the regular one i downloaded?
I also downloaded the standard and professional WM6 SDKs
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...745-88EF-3D48091A390B&displaylang=en#filelist
I used embedded visual tools in the past (3 and 4). Be aware that you cannot use the WM5 SDK with eVC, you must use Visual Studio for that. The latest thing usable with eVC is the WM2003 SDK, as far as I know. Also, the emulator handling in eVC was quite sluggish and buggy. When I switched to VS2005, it was like a deliverance to me. Also, the help system in VS is a blessing. *g*
Though I used Delphi's VCL in the past, I would never freely touch such a thing on restricted hardware such as in PDAs. Hence, .NET, MFC and of course *cough* Java *cough* are out of the question. I'm a pure C++ writer. The progs are nicely small and fast. And there are always alternatives to the things I can't use because of that: for instance instead of MFC CStrings I got acquainted with STL library's strings. There's also ATL which supposedly can be used instead of MFC for GUI programming, but when I looked for it some years back I found only very little information about that.
Happy coding.
Is it true that you can only develop WinMo C++ in VS Pro?
I read on the Microsoft marketplace that the standard edition dosnt support mobiles..
are there any alternatives (C++ only please..)
yes they only support through pro... but you can get it for free through dreamspark if you are a student

Good news. My uni isn't listed either. It is a simple matter of verifying your student status on journey ed. I'm glad I could help with this because it turns out that I could get all the dreamspark software through my school's MSDNAA program anyways.
