Hey, I just had a look at the thumb keyboard at a shop here. While they had one and I could see how it plugs on my XDA I couldn't find out how to initaite or answer a call while the keyboard is plugged on. I mean the keyboard covers the red and green key and the keyboard doesn't seem to have any way to handle that. Or am I just not smart enough for that?
I'd be glad to hear from someone using the thumb keyboard...
if you do a search you'll find people who have it and most of them hate it
you can always answer a call by tapping on the screen then the notification show that you are getting a call
Thanks, mate - for the idea and the comment

Hey all,
Just looking at getting this phone but not sure about something. Im a big time texter and love a proper slide out qwerty keyboard. I however like this phone.
What is the SMS like with the on screen keyboard? Is it workable? I've seen online that you can change the keyboard style but not sure if this control is on SMS. Can you change the keyboard on SMS too?
I've also read a post where someone said the on screen keyboard was in the way of a new text when looking at a thread of sms conversation. And you have to keep scrolling down. Still a problem? Bad one? Fixed?
What do you think really? Would love this phone to come out with a "HD PRO" keyboard.
Thanks all,
D.
I use the standard keyboard, and got used to using the compact qwerty keyboard. At the beginning I was slow mainly due to using the keypad style as in my previous phones. But now I can type very fast and very comfortably. You can also activate a click sound everytime you press a key and it will give you feedback. But I type perfect without it anyway.
Hi all,
again, i dont like starting new threads, but I havent found anything about this keyboard bug im experiencing
I'm on 1.48.405.2 (71294)
So i'm SMS-ing with XT9 on and word completion:
If im typing away and end something with a QUESTION, like
"What are you doing today?"
I normally click the "12#" to change to symbol to select the question mark "?"
BUT i noticed EVERY SINGLE TIME when there is a WORD COMPLETION SUGGESTION hovering over the word and you CLICK "12#", the cursor will POP UP to the line ABOVE! (if i've gone past 1 line of text)
A word completion suggestion popup must be there before clicking "12#" for the cursor to pop up. But this is pretty basic for anyone typing a question.
this is SO annoying when i'm trynig to type fast and add a "?", cause then the cursor keeps popping up and screwing up my message...
Also another bug i noticed is when I receive a SMS, and in HTC Message i click on the message to go to Windows messaging..
Sometimes when i start to type (and it clearly says its oN XT9), no word completion pops up!
It's very intermittent, but the XT9 will be selected but just not work...
Anyone else experiecne this?
And better yet, does ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION/REGISTRY TWEAK?
That cursor popping up when wanting to type a symbol is super annoying...
I installed the Less sensitivity cab but im not sure if that caused this?
Why don't you just hold down the 'k' key till the question mark pops up?
I'm facing the second problem of yours too. Sometimes the T9 is 'on' but it is not functioning. This is really annoying. I have to close the message go to home screen and come back into the message again to get it working.
I've been getting the Xt9 thing too at random times. Although I never goto the other symbols keyboard to do the '?'.
thanks for the replies guys
least i know im not the only one
yeah..i COULD hold the "k" to get the "?" ...i guess i can do that from now on.
But i find the 2 clicks is faster than holding the K...maybe its just me
Anyways, hopefully HTC is aware of this so they fix this..
The keyboard is used all the time so this is a pretty annoying thing to see
has anyone had the issue of replying to a text and it just comes out as numbers ??? you then have to go into the text option Turn on Turn off an option then press done and then letters will appear ?
My keyboard annoyances are accidentally turning off XT9 modemany times when trying to press the A key. Why did they have to put the XT9/ABC key right under the A key?
Also I get the XT9 turning off bug too from time to time even though it is turned on.

I get this problem sometimes. Its bloody annoying!
I usually go to menu>quick text then press back and usually that sorts it.
Hope they find a permanent fix to stop it happening though!!

I have the same problem sometimes. I uses the Phonepad and sometimes it will only type numbers.
I have talked to HTC (danish) and they will try to look at it.
Sometimes the XT9 doesnt show words at all. Ive got those two problems
Its a joke man i can believe theres so much issue with there sms functions
- im a Texter and this isnt good - please keep me updated as whatever they send you im going to forward to HTC uk!
These faults need to be bombarded over to HTC for a imminent fix !
WHAT HAPPENED TO THERE TESTER ????
I have reported this to HTC support, but didn't hear anything back, in fact I didn't get an auto-responder either so I hope they got my email.
i have same problem .....
when a message comes i reply key pad types ok
but when again message come i reply key pad starts typing digits
problem is with phone pad and compact qwery pad ......
i have mailed HTc via support
but have not got a response yet .?
I also experience that sometimes the XT9 doesnt work even though it is marked as "on". Also, Im not able to add new words to T9.
Any news about the problem. Any solutions???
I am new to Android and loving my Aria so far. The only thing that is really bugging me is the text input. I am having a little separation anxiety from my keyboard and it seems like I must be missing something. First I am using the swype keyboard but I don't think that is related to my question.
When you enter text into any input, say the body of an email in the gmail app, is there an easy way to go back and edit that text? I often find myself tapping 5 or 6 times to try to get the cursor back to the exact place that I need to edit and it gets really frustrating? On the iPhone when you want to edit text a search window pops up where your finger is and you can slide it back and forth to find the exact spot that you are looking for. Is there anything like this for Android?
Thanks for any feedback.

Slide your finger over the little track pad between the menu and back button at the bottom of the phone. (Its the small silver circle). I think some people think that is the microphone but its not.

Aaah. I did know that was an optical input but I did not even think of it. I rarely use it since scrolling and selecting is so easy.
Thanks,

Yes i hate trying to get the cursor back to edit a word glad someone asked
never thought about using the trackball sure makes things lot easier
Optical TrackPad FTW!

Even better than the optical trackpad, Smart Keyboard has an arrow layout option that let's you navigate text way faster. The board is real nice too.
I know some of you might think this is a stupid question. I would like to use any on screen keyboard while the hardware keyboard is open and disable hw kb until I want to use it. Let me see if I can explain this to you why.
I am starting to like typing in landscape mode with on screen keyboard. I am getting pretty good at it and definitely think my speed is faster that way than a hardware keyboard. Have any of you tried typing in landscape for any extended length of time? I don't know about you but my fingers really start cramping and hurting because I have to hold the phone with the rest of my hands and fingers while typing with my thumbs. When the hw kb is open, this could give me more area to hold the phone a little more comfortably while using a fast software keyboard. My thumbs wouldn't be at funky downward angles to hit the keys, they would be extended straighter and upwards and might be less prone to getting crampt up and carpel tunnel.
Am I crazy to think this might be useful? Has anyone heard of it being done or an app or hack that could achieve what I'm trying to do?
I do understand where you are coming from, having big hands and fingers can suck sometimes, but I don't think its possible. I've tried to see if I could pull up the virtual landscape keyboard with the hw one open but no luck.

Why'd you get the Shift and not the Evo if you would prefer an on-screen keyboard?

I'm not complaining or whining, I'm just asking for help with something that I might like to do.
to answer your question, yes, it is possible.
i just tested this on skyfire, ebuddy, and gmail. if you simply leave the keyboard in, aka don't slide the screen, and rotate the device, the screen will turn and whatever app you are using will also turn (if it supports it). then just click in the text box you want to type in again, and the onscreen keyboard will come up. I'm using better keyboard atm, so didn't test it with the HTC or any others. but i'm fairly positive that if it works with that one, it'll throw up whichever keyboard you are currently using in the same situation.

I think you missed what he was trying to say. he was asking if it's possible to use the on-screen keyboard with the physical keyboard open.
OP, here's an android tip (it works with any android phone): if you hold down the menu button with your cursor in a text field, it forces the on-screen keyboard to come up. You could try selecting a text field, then holding down the menu button.

I know about what you are explaining, that's normal usage. What I'm interested in is using the open physical keyboard as additional area to hold the phone with while in landscape and using the on screen keyboard. I'm thinking there needs to be something to trick the phone into thinking the keyboard drawer is closed when it's actually open.
It seems, as usual, that I am coming up with lame brain ideas and haven't a clue as how to making them happen. I emailed one keyboard dev a few days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. I guess I could shoot out emails to all the devs of the keyboards I have bought and see if I get a response.

I just tried that with the drawer open and it is not working. I tried switching to the stock keyboard too and still nothing. Thanks for the suggestion.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a 1-year warranty on manufacturing defects, regardless of insurance standing or the 30-day return policy? Certainly sounds like a manufacturing defect to me, unless it's broken from misuse
this isnt the place for talking about warantee issues. start a different thread. this is about answering the question in this thread.
have you tried any other keyboards from the market or like the swype beta or anything? idk if it would make a difference. i doubt you can disable it while its open. if you want to use the soft keyboard close the phone? Its probably best practice to keep the phone closed when you arent using the hardware keyboard anyways?

and I was pointing out a potential fix for someone with an issue in this thread, try to keep up.
Looks like smart keyboard pro has that feature. Its buried in the advanced menu.
Yes sir it is I just downloaded the trial to give it a shot one thing I notice is when you open the keyboard on the home screen they keyboard pops up over all your icons I'm gonna play with the settings somemore and see what I can do about it
*EDIT* if you are on a text box and hit home the keyboard don't open over home screen but if you just open the phone to put it into landscape on the homescreen they beyboard will pop up just hit the search button then back and you have your whole home screen

I mentioned this once in a Development thread, but I am hoping maybe now someone can help. I often find myself wanting to make use of the keyboard in situations when it does not automatically come up. On my phone I can hold menu to bring it up, but of course Honeycomb does not have this.
Any how does anyone know a way to do this?
like what situation????
arrowing through menus etc...
It is also useful when fields don't pop the keyboard up right. The search button on this forum is a good example. Click it, then click the text field, it will close as soon as teh keyboard pops up, then the keyboard goes too.
