Beam all contacts in a category all at once - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

To all,
I used have palm PDA and I can beam single contact/all contacts/by category via IR between my PDA and my phone. On the XDA II under contacts, it seems that I can only beam one contact at a time. I did not see a choice for beam all contacts/catgeory. :?:
Thanks,
David

You probably have to first use yous stylus to drag all contacts manually, and then choose menu Tools > Beam Contacts.
HTH.

use the keyboard & click Ctr-A.

You can also press Ctl on the keyboard and select each Contact one by one. Or press Shift and select a group of adjacent Contacts. In short, the same selection keystrokes used in Windows also apply to the Pocket PC.

Hahaha, that's the magic of onscreen keyboard, totally forget about that

Looking for Symbian like contacts

I'm looking for a contacts replacement which is like the one in Nokia Symbian phones. By this I mean:
* The option to have the contacts listed as "First name, Surname" (instead of the other way around)
* The option to add more then 1 Mobile number, email address or other data per contact. With symbian phones you can just select add data and then add another mobile number or whatever when you please.
Breaking compatibility with outlook doesn't matter to me.
Oh and an easy way to transfer all contacts from a symbian phone to the wizard would also be appriciated.
What I did to get al my contacts from my P900 (symbian) to my Wizard is this:
Sync all your contacts from your symbian device to Outlook (with the included symbian software) and then sync them all back with ActiveSync.
There is a plugin that lets you change your contacts from Last Name, First Name to First Name, Last Name.
You can also do something in Outlook to change this permanent, although I don't know exactly what, but I'm sure other XDA members know what I mean and they can tell it to you (and me)
I don't know how you can add more cellular numbers to 1 contact, I think you can manage fields for your contacts through Outlook, but your right, this is one of the things I miss on WM5, I used this option a lot on my P900.
Yes I know howto transfer all the contacts from Symbian to PPC, personally I just did "mark all" in the addressbook and then "send -> via bluetooth" which will send everything but the problem is that you won't get everything. I've got contacts with several phonenumbers attached to them and I only get the first one entered.
Do you remember the name of the plugin? I really do not care for outlook since I don't use it.

I foudn this which gives you an extra option in the Contacts menu:

Also I found this application which lets you add unlimited items to your contacts (breaks coptaibility with outlook)
http://www.inesoft.com/eng/index.php?in=addressbook.htm
Combine both and you have the desired result. The only thing you need todo is select "View -> File As" from the Inesoft menu.

Open a contact in outlook (by double clicking on them).
Click on the tab "All Fields"
In the drop down, select "User-defined fields in this item" (if it isn't already selected)
Is the extra data there?
No it's not in the userdefined fields thingy. But on some contacts it shows the following on the general tab.
== start pim information ==
Phone:
[Mobile: *************]
== end pim information ==

Can you upload the fie, the link on the site isn't working at the moment. It is one of the things I miss from my P900 too... I'm slowly finding solutions to each annoying little thing I find, nearly there now.
Uploaded. See attachment..
You can find a couple of variations of FileAsFL at

Once you install the cab file, there are a few more steps you need to perform. So, since you didn't mention I have to ask.... did you follow these usage instructions as well?
"Usage:
1. Select the contacts you want to re-sort (tap and drag, press Ctrl on the soft keyboard and tap a range, press Shift on the soft keyboard and tap to select/deselect individual contacts, or press Ctrl+a on the soft keyboard to select all, etc.)
2. Tap Tools->File As: Comp L, F (or tap and hold on the selected contacts and select File As: Comp L, F from there)."

names in Contacts ?

hello, how to define to show names in normal contacts application
in order - First -> Last. My QTEK shows always Last - > First. I cant
find any option to change it.
Tap and hold on the name utill a another box pops up
Then i what i do is put the whole name in the frist name field how i want it dis played and it works, there may be another way as well
Have a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44809
You will have an option in the menu popup for a contact to store as First:Last.
HTH
if you're syncing with outlook you can set that as an option in the contacts page as well. sadly if you've got a bunch of contacts its going to take you a long time either way =\

How to bluetooth contacts?

Is it possible to bluetooth contacts from a Wizard to another phone?
T'other half has a Nok6670 which has Bluetooth but no Infrared, I need to copy a load of contacts from my Wizard.
...with pocket informant you can select all contacts and 'beam' them (as vcards). Automatically the transmit devices IR and BT will appear and you can transfer them to the other one who can receive them with 'receive beam'...
Without PI you can sent contacts by BT, as vcards directly out of the contactslist, but only one at a time; it would take you ages if you've got a big list...

I'm going to d/l PI anyway as it looks pretty interesting aside from this functionality. But I'm confused about what you've written above...if I try and send a vCard it just creates an MMS ??
PI doesn't appear to be able to BT contacts either.
I'm GUESSING its a feature of the ROM? I'm due to upgrade sometime next week anyhow.
Might persevere with PI though, looks good, except some poor design on the icons, its not always obvious what pressing something is going to do.
...without PI when i tap&hold a contact and choose 'send as vcard' it copies it to \temp]vcard.vcf . Then i have to rename them into the desired contactname (otherwise it will just overwrite the old vcard.vcf) before i can BT them one by one...
I guess i don't get a mms posibility because i didn't installed t-mobile stuff after hard reset.
BTW I use PocketInformant2007

you can do it, just follow these steps:
one time work
use your favorite regedit, go to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Obex
change DWORD value of "Isabled" from 0 to 1, save changes
reset or full off
you need to make target device is discoverable
then go to contacts, highlight several items (5 at a time), tap and hold->beam contacts
once you found nokia 6670->tap to send
you can also transfer the contacts through nokia pcsuite from outlook (if the contacts are the same) through USB cable or bt from host

Change Contact List To [First Name-Second Name] ??

Is there anyway to change the view, when in all contacts so that peoples first names and listed first?
thanks
and a happy new year!
You will enjoy this tiny freeware software that does just that: almost instantly order your contacts by first name (or middle name or last name). Look here for Contact Changer. You run it once and 1 second after, all your contacts are sorted. The downside is that it doesn't change standard setting of the program, which means that the default order will still be LAST NAME first. But since the application is free and quick... You could run it everyday.
Happy new year mate

Yes, it's a built-in function. But you have to go right to the bottom of the edit screen for the entry and select it from 'others'.

Just installed the Contact_changer_v1.3.cab. via file explorer on my HD2, but no joy. Restarted it and checked my contacts, still showing as Last, First.
Am I missing something?

Ye if you select a contact, then go to edit. Scroll to the bottom and select "more". This brings up the standard WM contact editor. Then in the box "File As" Select the "First, Last" option. This is long winded but it survives soft reset.

You can do that within Outlook, that's probably more convenient than on the phone.

Thats true. I dont use outlook anymore now that there is "my phone" might look if there is the same option on the web site.
Contact_changer_v1.3.cab did the trick for me, thanks guys.
I used the app, I then set the contacts in my outlook to be First:Last and now each time I sync the names are they way they should be as opposed to Last:First. So no need to use the contact changer app on the HD2 anymore, but I'll keep it on there just incase it reverts back to Last:First.
Thanks again
I tried going to edit contact -> More but when I scroll down I don't see "More", just the entries like birthday, spouse etc. Am I in the wrong place?

The bottom 3 data fields are Birthday, Anniversary & Link (for facebook). There's a "More" button below that.
Ah, thats in "people", not "contacts". "More" takes you to the edit menu for contacts - I see the option now.
If you go to contacts, just go edit and it's a few lines down
my god, what a long winded way of doing this !!!!!
I've emailed HTC through their support page, to see if they can release a hotfix or advise a registry tweak, to enable you to select the default contacts display option, without having to edit each and every contact !!!
I imported my contacts from my SIM card.... due to limitations on SIM memory, the names were merged into the Lastname field only, which was fine... in AllPeople they appeared listed correctly
But when I spent 3 hours manually editing every contact in my phone using the inbuilt MyPhone feature (I don't use Outlook on any of my home or work computers), and synched the phone, they all appeared lastname, firstname.... VERY frustrating
And there was NO field or setting within the MyPhone service website (that I could find anyway) that allowed me to set the correct default name-display.
VERY f**ing annoying, as now I have to go through the phone manually and adjust every single contact again !!!!
Come on HTC..... the phones advertised/marketed as being user-friendly.... more-so than other phones.... how about fixing the little name-display issue
Other than that, I don't want to use the cab file listed above, as I really dont want to keep adding new programs to duplicate existing ones that don't quite work the way they should...... and I don't want to have to keep running it every day...... does anyone know if there is a simple quick registry tweak/setting, whereby I can permanently set the default display as First Last ? I'm NEVER going to want my contacts displayed any other way than this.....
This is extremely annoying when you use Google Sync. In order for it to work, you need to edit 1 contact, switch to ActiveSync, press Sync, then go back and edit another.
If you edit more than 1 contact at a time between syncing, it reverts everything back except the last change.

Havent checked it out but maybe its of some use to you
installed contact manager (for .99$) all problems sorted out, after retart also remains the same.. thx for the info..
anyone has the old .cab that is free??? would it be possible to upload here?
thanks in advance,
This seems to be another thing that I used to have on the Hong Kong rom (which was on the phone when I got it second hand) and has now disapeared once I have flashed the O2 uk Rom onto the phone.
So so far by putting the o2 UK ROM on the phone my contacts wont sync with FB, no contact images are being imported against the names. The sync all contacts with FB function has gone, so I have to do each one individually, and now I realise the first name second name thing.
Going to try and find the Hong Kong rom off the net and load it on again to see if all this comes back again. Still has the English keyboard so isn't really any different.

Annoyances and solution

Hi all,
I'm thinking of posting this thread and if people can tell me annoyance that they have and possible solutions I'll update this post.
I'll start off
Problem 1:
Gmail contacts syncing syncs ALL your contacts from gmail not just the "my contacts"
Solution: go to contacts -> menu button -> display options and then selection "Only contacts with phones"
Problem 2:
Slide to call/sms. If you have multiple numbers for contacts say home and mobile, it'll dial home first.
Solution: Click on the contact name. Press menu button -> Mark as default and then select which default number you want. Pain in the butt if you asked me.
Problem 3:
Can't get into recovery mode through "Vol up + home + power"
Solution: This is because you haven't got it plugged in. Plug in the usb cable and it'll be sweet. I think i needs to be connected to power source. Have not tried so if someone can confirm this, but I can confirm if you plug it in usb port
thanks cool threads.

That's not a solution but a bad clumsy workaround!
For me it's not usefull, since I do have email-only contacts which I want in my adressbook, but plently of email adresses in "all contacts" which I don't want to have on my phone's adressbook. Hopefully Samsung will fix this soon, as well as the problem with gmail contacts and groups/ringtones in general.
I have gone from a Sony X1 to a Palm Pre and both gave me major problems. But i don't have one single annoyance with this Samsung. Really nice bit of kit. If it doesn't fall apart after a year it will take the top spot as my best phone ever which is currently the Sony W810i. .

Ya but it's the only quick solution atm. Wonder why Samsung took out the "my contacts" option from stock roml.....
Q: Where is the option to assign a custom ringtone to a contact?
A: Like me you probably have ALL your contacts in google's cloud. Only wayI've found to set a custom ringtone is to create a new contact on the "phone", then set a ringtone on it, then link it to the google contact. Clumsy, but works.
Q: Doesn't mount SD on OS X
A: Make sure you have the USB option on the phone set to Mass Storage (not Kies) and turn on USB debugging. Should be fine after that.
Problem 1:
agree for the fact that it is a clumsy workaround.
Very happy that somebody find this anoyance and report it, I have my SGS for 2 days (1st android device) and thought I missed something.
Wondering if people are really using this phone and not just hacking it :=)
(also it's nice to see such a community)
Why nobody (or nearly, I have been googling many hours without finding and answer) is talking about this: do people think that nowadays phone have to be buggy?????
So, for those that are googling contact group synchronization problems between samsung galaxy s and gmail: IT DOES NOT WORK (or at least not completely)
Best regards to the forum and samsung, please do your homework...... brilliant hard clumsy soft you better use stock android IMHO
