I just bought the new T-Mobile (USA) MDA a couple days ago, a version of the HTC Wizard.
I have been able to connect with GPRS/EDGE, and seem to be getting EDGE speed, which is nice (my first EDGE phone).
However, no such luck with Wi-fi.
At my house, I can easily connect, at all times, with a few different wi-fi networks, with my wi-fi enabled laptop, and with my older PPC--an IPAQ 2210, with Spectec SDIO Wi-Fi card, can browse the web via Wi-Fi, etc.
The MDA does connect to Wi-FI, appears to be connected to it. (After turning it on in Connection Manager, of course.) But I cannot access any web sites with it. On trying to do so with PIE, I always get the error message:
"The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost, Check the connection and try again later."
I have not once been able to access one web site via Wi-Fi, with the MDA.
Can anyone help with this?

I have exactly the same problem
I guess you could try going under "Settings" "Connections" "Network Card" and make sure your network card is set to connect to "The Internet"
Select your wireless card and then make sure the drop down says "The Internet" and hit ok.
Also, make sure your GPRS Connection settings aren't setup to use T-Mobile's proxy. When your gprs is setup to use a proxy for web browsing, PIE will attempt to use the proxy with any connection. And by proxy, I'm not talking about an APN or anything.
Are you running security on your router? If so try shutting it off to test or try to connect to someone elses WiFi network to test.

I spoke with a TMob customer service rep about this a couple weeks ago, and this is basically what he told me to do. A T-Mobile HotSpot (Starbucks, etc) should work without making any changes. But if you want to use your own WiFi connection, you have to do the following:
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change first dropdown to "My Work Network".
Click OK, OK.
Then when you want to roam with GPRS/EDGE again, you have to change it back to "T-Mobile GPRS".
Very annoying to say the least. If anyone knows a better way to do this, I'd love to hear about it.
This works for me:
Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections Icon
Select Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change the first dropdown to My Work Network
Change the second dropdown to T-Mobile GPRS
Make sure My Work Network is set to connect to the internet, but has NO proxy settings.
Make sure T-Mobile GRPS is set to connect to the internet, but HAS proxy settings.

AHHHH, AND IT FINALLY GOT MY POCKET MSN TO START WORKING TOO!!!! Still doesn't work on GPRS, but it certainly works on Wi-Fi!! I suppose the last thing would be to get it working on both!! regardless, this is SWEET!!

When I Change the first dropdown to My Work Network and after that tryn to sync without having wifi enabled, the device does not connect with GPRS..., solutions...

I did EXACTLY what fry posted....follow this carefully

That is exactly what I did too. Just tried it again and I can't use GPRS to surf. I have Wifi turned off. GPRS is not connected. I open PIE and go to some URL (google.com). GPRS starts connecting and successfully connects to T-Mobile GPRS.
Then, for about 30-60 seconds, the status bar says "Locating". Then an alert pops up that says "The page cannot be displayed or downloaded because the connection was lost. Check the connection and try again later."
Next, I turn on WiFi. It conects to my local WiFi network. It is still connected to T-Mobile GPRS too. I go back to PIE. As soon as I try to goto a URL, the GPRS connection drops, and again it says "Locating..." for a while. Then the same alert pops up again.
So now that GPRS isn't connected and just WiFi, I try going to the URL again. Same results.
Next I try turning off WiFi. Now there are no connections. I restart WiFi and there is just a WiFi connection. Same results in PIE.
I thought maybe the proxy is the problem, so I turned off the proxy in GPRS. When I do this, the checkbox "This network connects to the internet" won't stay checked. Even if I check it and click ok, when I go back it is unchecked. And when I did this, I couldn't even connect with GPRS. And with WiFi on, it would connect to Wifi, but going to a page would immediately pop up an alert that says "Cannot Connect with current connection settings. To change you connection settings, tap Settings."
I added the proxy back in and then tried changing the GPRS access point name from wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com and internet3.voicestream.com. internet2 wouldn't even make a connection, but internet3 did. however, i still couldn't locate pages in PIE. So I changed it back to wap. I think my unlimited GPRS plan is configured the VPN way, so I remember having to use internet2 or internet3 in the past.
Could the proxy server not be working right for me? Is it possible that I cannot locate the proxy because I'm configured in a non-standard way (with a different access point - internet3) than most?
I think I'll call tmo and see if I can get changed to the regular AP (wap). I'm not using VPN stuff right now anyway. If anyone has other ideas, please let me know.

I think i have a work around. but involes changing it back and forth when switching btwn wifi and gprs..
created two connections.
one with proxy and one without.
im only able to surf gprs with proxy.
when connecting via GPRS set both networks to connect to PROXY.
when using WiFi, set both networks to connect using NOPROXY.
that should work. at least it worked for me. tried only 2 pages and it loaded for both. GPRS used myvoicestream and wifi google.

Earlier today I had been trying to get VM Net Browser or Resco File Explorer to work, and they *were* working, albeit very sporadically. Sometimes I could see whole windows network complete with shared files and directories, other times I could browse to my computer and it wouldn't show anything as being shared. Looking for a solution, i found this thread.
I followed the recommendations of the previous posts and got exactly the same results as yowzator, including the weird thing with the "This network connects to the internet" checkbox unchecking. My GPRS access point is also named wap.voicestream.com - not sure if that matters.
However, I know that I was having at least partial wi-fi success before trying this fix or I wouldn't be able to have seen my home network. So I gave up on this fix and put everything back to the default - GPRS for programs that automatically connect to the internet, no proxy, and My Work Network for programs that automatically connect toa private network, with "This network connects to the internet" unchecked because it's impossible to check it and expect it to stay checked.
I tried surfing around to a few pages with wifi only (connections shows me connected to my network, I turned off the phone icon in the comm settings, and tapping on the connectivity icon on the taskbar didn't have GPRS listed) and amazingly, some of them worked - though the "locating" process seemed to take a while, they sometimes seemed to load faster than with GPRS (especially if I let my MDA go to sleep and then turn it back on again).
And then they don't work again, without me doing anything. So I don't think the fix we've been trying is a true fix to the problem - if it was then then pages would *never* load with the proxy disabled. Right?
I've been wondering if the "modem" tab under My Work Network is supposed to be blank . . . even if it's using wifi it seems like a poor UI design to not have a checkbox or something saying "this connection is for wifi and not dialup".
I am using the 2.17 ROM update. My wireless router is a D-link DI-624 extreme g. I'm using WEP encryption.
I am crying . . . tears . . . of confusion.
SOLUTION!?
This works for me (suggested in another thread):
1. Add the following to the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS:
DWORD dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8
(Note that there is already a key in the registry called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: DWORD dot11SupportedRateMask=1" - you should leave this alone)
2. Do a soft reset.
3. Go to your wi-fi settings -> Power Mode tab -> Best Performance (without this step it didn't work for me)
4. Turn on wi-fi and connect to anything in internet explorer. It should seem blazing fast compared to GPRS.
Note that this assumes you haven't done any of the fixes in this thread. That is to say, leave it with GPRS for programs that automatically connect to the internet (with no proxy), and My Work Network for programs that automatically connect to a private network, with "This network connects to the internet" unchecked because it's impossible to check it and expect it to stay checked.
So far (for a few minutes anyway) this is working for me! Even Resco File Explorer seems to mostly work - I can map my PC's shared folders and see my stuff reliably, as far as I can tell. VM Net Browser is still wonky though.

I have no home network so I have never got anything working - connects fine on a public hotspot, but as I say, fails on locate.
I've had enough - may either phone T-mobile pay CS - something I really don't want to do out of principle - or just send teh phone back.
any new info on this? can seem to get it to work.
i have configures it many ways as suggested above. only time i was able to browse on wifi was with no proxie was set up. i connect through another network, (the mda automatically hooks you up to all avalible networks) but that only lasted a few minutes.
is there even a chance i could someone at tmobile even help me??? anyone here call them and get got service/help with getting it to work?

I'm trying to get my Vario II to act as a modem to my laptop using the phone's 3G connection.
I eventually located the "generic modem" driver files to permit the phone to act as a modem to my laptop but I don't know what to do next. I've installed the driver and Windows (XP) reports that the generic modem is installed and working OK.
The downloaded files also included a program called "HTC USB Modem" and when I run this I am asked for a Username and password - and I haven't a clue what I should enter since I don't normally have to enter anything on my phone to access 3G.
Can anyone tell me how to proceed? Or tell me another way to get my phone to act as a modem to my laptop?

Password: Your 3G access password (some telcos do not use it so leave it blank)
remember to set your access point on your wireless modem before connecting.

That last bit threw me Leo. What exactly to you mean by this?
Your network requires you to connect to an access point. If your device came from the network it was already set up to do so. As you need to manually enter the access point (or APN) and any user/password details, you need to google for your networks GPRS Settings.
For example with Orange, their APN = orangeinternet
(with no username or password.)

I am no techie but I did it by following the info on the wiki site and I have the same phone and same network. Mine works ok - have you had a try this way?

Before you dial you need to untick the usb connection in the active sync. Otherwise it thinks you want to do that instead. Have you tried that?

Open the comm manager and disable the data option (a little PDA with two arrows) then open the modem and select start. Now when it is plugged into the USB cable the PC will not recognise it as a PDA but as a modem.
Then configure a dial up connection with the options described above and it should connect OK. If not call 150 and they will talk you through it in a couple of minutes.

Let's try and get this working for you. I assume that you are on a T-mobile Web & Walk package and want to use the Vario II as a modem for the laptop to allow a data connection via your T-mobile 3G and GPRS access? If this is so then here goes:
- Configuring WModem on Vario II - Go to Programs and select the WModem option. select Menu - APN Settings. Ensure 'Preset GPRS connections' is ticked and in the APN box enter 'general.t-mobile.uk' then click Done.
- Modem configuring - you seem already to have done this as you have installed the drivers and say it is working - that means you also know how to start the "wireless modem" function on the Vario II in programs.
- Forget about the HTC USB Modem software - just create a new Windows XP 'connection'. I found that this software just added a level of complexity and it meant that you had to enter settings (usernames and password) manually each time.
- Create a Windows Connection on the laptop/PC:
- go to 'show all connections' then click 'create a new connection' (or follow the new connection wizard if this view is what you use).
- Select 'Connect to the Internet', then 'Set up my connection manually' then 'connect using a dial-up modem' then in the ISP Name box that comes next enter something of use like 'Vario II (T-Mob) Connection'
- In phone number enter *99#
- In username enter 'general.t-mobile.uk'
- In the password fields enter 'one2one'
- Consider unticking the bottom 2 options for default and allow all users...
- Save all the settings so far and close the wizard and dismiss the dial-up that appears.
- Change Dial-up Settings - You have created a Vario II dial-up for use by the laptop but you need to ensure that the dial-up uses the Vario II 'HTC USB Modem' and not the built-in laptop/PC modem:- Start WModem - with the Vario docked or USB connected (and activesync running OK) start the WModem (from programs) by selecting Menu - Start. This should stop activesync automatically and then your laptop/PC should see the HTC USB Modem (the Vario II with the WModem running).- On the laptop/PC go into your available connections and right-mouse select properties on the new Vario II connection. In the first (general) tab under 'Connect Using' select/tick the entry for the Vario II modem that should read 'Modem - HTC USB Modem (COM#)' - where COM# is the com port automatically set by the laptop/PC. Check the phone number. Make sure that any other modem is unticked.That should be about it and all should now work! To use the connection just set-up turn off your wireless network or unplug the network cable, then connect the Vario II with the USB lead, then start WModem (the program and menu-start!) on the Vario II, then on the laptop just double-click the connection that you created. Note that the laptop/PC will display the data connection established to the Vario II not your 3G/GPRS connection speed. I changed the settings on my Vario II USB Modem to increase the maximum speed of the connection (to the modem only) to 921600bps and also checked the Hardware features were all ticked.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have a problema and I'd be glad to help more. The connection works seemlessly on my laptop and basic surfing and e-mail is really quite fast - way quicker than a 56k dial-up that we all used to have!

so here is the guide and u need to have the driver mentioned in this thread.

You must have from your network provider: the internet access point name, your user name and password.
Download and unzip the attached file in a folder on your desktop
1- Disconnect the device from your desktop
2- On the ActiveSync icon on your desktop, open "Connection Settings". Uncheck "Allow USB Connection".
3- On your device: Go to "Beam" (in Settings/Connections), and uncheck "Receive all Incoming beams".
4- Then in Programs, click on "Wireless Modem". With the Connection type on USB, click on "Start".
5- Now, connect your device to the desktop. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" starts on your desktop. Click "Install from a specific location", then "Don’t search. I will choose…", then click on "Modems", and "Have Disk…" and go to the folder where you unzipped the attached file.
The HTC USB Modem will be shown in the compatible hardware: click to install. Continue if you receive the alert of the software not passing the Windows XP compatibility test (Continue anyway). Finish.
6- Now, in Control Panel of your desktop, open "Phone and Modem Options". Select the "HTC USB Modem" and click on "Properties". In the "Advanced" tab type for "Extra initialization commands":
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”,””,0,0
where xxx is your internet access point.
Click Ok to finish.
7- On your device (always open in the Wireless Modem program), click on Tools/Options. Check the Preset GPRS connections and write in the APN, your network provider internet access point.
8- Finally, on your desktop, go to "Network Connections" and click "Create a new connection". Choose "Connect to the internet", then "Set up my connection manually". Click "Connect using a dial-up modem", then give a name to your ISP. In phone number type *99#. Get username and password from your network provider.
Better keep a shortcut of this connection on your desktop for quick access.
Each time you want to use your device as a modem:
Disconnect your device
Disable ActiveSync from your desktop by unchecking the “Allow USB connection”
Open Wireless Modem on your device and push on Start (with the Connection Type on USB)
Connect your device, then dial from your desktop using the shortcut you created
PS: Remember to enable ActiveSync once you’ve finished.
managed to find the USB driver/file so i attached
sorry was too lazy to reply as I really can't remember the whole wireless modem ****...
moved on to wm6 now, internet sharing is a breeze.
T-Mobile Charges for Vario use as modem

I set up the Vario II as described above and it worked fine. What I don't understand is why T-Mobile should charge more (£7 per month extra, or thereabouts) simply because a laptop is included in the system. Surely, provided you don't go over your limit for W&W (1 Gig) then why should they worry?
Am I likely to be charged extra, simply for accessing what I can already access from my Vario ii, but using a laptop as the "front-end"?

u need to exceed the limit of 2gb i guess to be warn but then you can still you ur w&w. i been using my vario a lot never had any problems with t-mob
if your using a updated rom you dont have the option of a WModem do you?
I'm trying to get my Vario II to act as a wireless modem to my laptop.
I've downloaded and installed generic modem driver for my laptop, initiated the WModem program on the Vario - and Windows (XP) does detect the modem. In fact, Device Manager correctly reports a "HTC USB Modem" as present and correct.
I've also tried to create a DUN setting for this configuration but I'm not sure what setting to use. For example, do I need a username and password and, if so, what are these? Or do I need to set an actual telephone number to dial out?
Any help appreciated. I really need a connection between my laptop and Vario before I go on business next week (to somewhere without wi-fi but with 3G).

I've downloaded and installed generic modem driver for my laptop, initiated the WModem program on the Vario - and Windows (XP) does detect the modem. In fact, Device Manager correctly reports a "HTC USB Modem" as present and correct.
I've also tried to create a DUN setting for this configuration but I'm not sure what setting to use. For example, do I need a username and password and, if so, what are these? Or do I need to set an actual telephone number to dial out?
Any help appreciated. I really need a connection between my laptop and Vario before I go on business next week (to somewhere without wi-fi but with 3G).

you will need to get the userid and password from your telco for GPRS conection settings thru PPC from laptop.
WM6 internet sharing does not require this
Yes, I have used the UK Vario II as a wireless modem successfully. You use the same settings in the modem as you use for GPRS and it works fine.

Thanks Paul. Where do I find these settings?
T-mobile do a good range of on line manuals and I found the settings I needed to connect my laptop via my Hermes there. I'll post details tomorrow.

Find the manual for "T-Mobile MDA Vario II"
The "Featured Instructions" have a section "Connecting To The Internet" with the option "Set up a GPRS data connection for WAP and Internet"
Personally I use these setting with the software from PDANet (www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/) to connect my laptop to the outside world with my usb cable with my T-Mobile sim card (Vodafone badged TyTN)!

Set up a GPRS data connection for WAP and Internet
Information: Before you can access WAP and Internet services from your phone you need to set up a data connection. You can choose between using GSM and GPRS as data bearer. With GPRS you are always connected to the network, whereas with GSM you need to dial up every time you want to use WAP and Internet. Follow these instructions to set up a GPRS data connection for WAP and Internet.
1 Find "Advanced"
* Press Start.
* Press Settings.
* Press the Connections tab.
* Press Connections.
* Press the Advanced tab.
2 Create new connection settings for WAP and Internet
* Press Select Networks.
* Press New... below Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using.
3 Enter name
* Press the Enter a name for these settings input field and key in T-Mobile GPRS
* Press ok.
4 Edit settings
* Press the Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using drop down list.
* Press the connection settings you have just set up (T-Mobile GPRS).
* Press Edit... below Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using.
5 Create new data connection
* Press New....
* Key in T-Mobile GPRS
6 Select connection type
* Press the Select a modem drop down list.
* Press Cellular Line (GPRS , 3G).
* Press Next.
Information: If you want to establish a GPRS dial-up connection via another phone or phone with a modem, you need to select the Generic IrDA connection type.
7 Enter APN name
* Press the Access point name input field and key in general.t-mobile.uk
* Press Next.
Information: The APN name general.t-mobile.uk must be in lower case letters.
If you selected the connection type Generic IrDA in step 6, you are now asked to key in a dial-up number. Key in *99# and go to step 8.
8 Enter username
* Press the User name input field and key in user
9 Enter password
* Press the Password input field and key in one2one
10 Delete domain name
* Press the Domain input field and make sure the field is empty.
11 Save settings
* Press Finish to save the settings and return to the list of data connections.
Information: You do not need to edit the settings in Advanced....
12 Activate data connection
* Press the data connection you have just set up (T-Mobile GPRS) to mark it.
* Press ok to activate the data connection.
13 Exit
* Press ok several times to exit the menu item.
* Press Close to return to stand-by mode.
Bluetooth
I am trying to use another phone as a modem. The other phone is a Nokia 6120c which has no Infrared.
According to the instructions above I need infrared - is there anyway to do it via blue tooth?
I have got as far as creating a bluetooth connection between the 2; however the user/one2one/*99# settings don't seem to work.
Any advice would be welcomed.....
I have been talking to at&t customer support (without success BTW) about a strange problem. Here it is:
I recently received a replacement 8525. My previous 8525 had the original ROM and the latest has the new ROM upgrade. On GPRS, the old phone would connect to isp.cingular access point name but the new phone won't. The new phone will only connect to wap.cingular access point name. (Both phones used/use the My ISP (without the proxy) network.)
With my previous phone, I was able to download radio show podcasts by going to the website of the radio show and then click on the download link. A "Save As" dialog would display and I would save the mp3. On the new phone the PIE displays that it can't display the page.
Here is the strange part. When I connected to my Wi-Fi at home (NOT through a PC but directly to the wireless router from the phone) I could download the mp3 just like the previous phone. I went to the web site, clicked the link, and received the "Save As" dialog.
This looks to me that there is nothing wrong with the phone since the mp3 could be downloaded through the Wi-Fi connection, but there is a problem getting the download through the GPRS connection.
Am I wrong in this? Any ideas will be welcome, I'm getting tired of talking to at&t.

I had the same problem before.
When ever your plan or phone changes (or anything with your account) your isp connectivity is turned off.
What you must do is call at&t and tell them to turn your isp.cingular back on.
If they give you some lip (I haven't had any lip from them)Just tell them that your VPN will only work using isp.cingular.
I've had to do this 3 times.
Also don't forget to remove the "EnableAutoDetect" from the registry...that will also stop PIE from working under isp.

I'm assuming you have the PDA connect plan if you're trying to use isp.cingular, right? Also, if you're using wap.cingular and you can't access the web as usual, you probably have a proxy set up. Check that out and report back.
How do I check to see if I have a proxy set up?
I have my "My ISP" network configured to connect to wap.cingular which doesn't have the proxy selection. That is the network I am currently using. I have also found a program on my phone call Proxy Manager. It consists of two programs: Disable Proxy and Restore Proxy. Do I need to run the Disable Proxy program?

AT&T now acknowledges that the 8525 cannot connect to ISP out of the box. The fix came out around wednesday 7/25. Their fix is to run the Disable Proxy in the Proxy Manager folder in Programs. This didn't work for me.
I performed a hard reset and tried AT&T's fix again. It still wouldn't connect. So I tried to delete "EnableAutoDetect" from the registry. After attempting to run PIE (and failing) I looked back in the registry and it was back. I noticed the value of "EnableAutoDetect" was "0". So for fun I set it to "1". I was able to connect to the internet.
I then modified the "My ISP" settings to compress the headers and the "EnableAutoDetect" was reset to "0". I reset it back to "1" and it has run ever since.
So if you have an AT&T 8525 and you have PDA Connect Unlimited and cannot connect with the "My ISP" settings do this:
1. Go to Programs/Proxy Manager and run Disable Proxy
2. Set "EnableAutoDetect" to "1"
If you make changes to the ISP like the setting to compress the headers, you may need to reset "EnableAutoDetect" back to "1" again.
Very good info. This problem has annoyed me quite a bit because the wap versions of web pages really tend to suck. I'll give this fix a try later tonight.
These fixes didn't work for me.
The primary purpose of 'Disable Proxy' and 'Restore Proxy' is to flip the EnableAutoDetect value back and forth. (disable - 1, restore - 0).
AT&T is also in the habit of sending phones out with MEdiaNet and 'My ISP' both configured for wap.cingular. May need to change 'My ISP' to isp.cingular if you have a PDAConnect plan.
I have the PDA connect plan, and my 8525 came configured originally with isp.cingular as the default. It wouldn't connect. I changed it to MEdia.net and now it connects, but to wap.cingular.
I'm actually kind of guessing that the proxy settings are on the wrong track on this for me, because I get a message that the modem has disconnected. A proxy setting shouldn't disconnect the modem, it would just make pages unable to display. There's something on Cingular's side that doesn't like my phone, either my password is incorrect or they need to provision it properly.
The current disposition of the proxy (i.e., enabled/disabled) won't prevent your phone from making a data connection, nor is it required for wap.cingular or isp.cingular. Enabling it allows you to access AT&T's "internal" services over GPRS (and only GPRS, incidentally).
The ability to use isp.cingular is usually driven by the plan to which you're subscribed. I'm not able to use isp.cingular, for example, because I have a MEdiaNet plan. I think AT&T may have a long-term plan to do away with isp.cingular, but I'm not sure.
I talked to ATT today and they provisioned it so that I could connect to isp.cingular. This worked during the time that I was on the phone with them and then resumed not working after we ended the call.

I was seeing this thread and guess what guys ; the same problem is now international ....
I purchased an AT&T tilt but now am using it in India; My network provider supports GPRS and edge but im not able to connect ; The weather update on the HTC home i downloaded works fine and also the Mundu internet messenger that I installed ; but IE and no other program Including google maps work ...
The funny part is when i connect it to my laptop ; all these things work ; I tried the proxy turn off and on thing suggested on most sites but that didnt work .. Is there something specific in registry or something that im missing ??
I then tried the hard reset followed by soft reset this to remove all the bloatware but still no use .. im so stuck

I'm sorry... I've searched the forum using a few different keywords and can't find exactly how to do this. I did see a posting on "MoDaCo_NoData" but it seems to crash on my Tytn (installs but errors after it runs).
I have downloaded the official HTC WM6 Rom update and have that installed now. I'm just reading up on the hacked roms (Black Majik)... might try it in a week or two.
I know on WM5 if I didn't enable WiFi and by mistake ran IE, it downloads the data from the cell network, which is definately NOT what I want. Worse, if for some dumb reason, Wifi is a low signal, it might drop and push you onto the cell network for data, which has happened to me a few times now and unless you are paranoid (I am now), you never notice that it's slipped onto cell data network. It's starting to cost me a fortune.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Just change the settings for your gprs data connection so they are incorrect and then wont connect to the network, easily done .

Sorry... where do I do that exactly? If I go to connections, click on "GPRS Setting" it asks me is I want to use PAP or CHAP... nothing else.
As well, I forgot to mention I did get a Tytn for my wife as well, so would be nice if there was a program or simple step to enable/disable and easy for the wife to use.

You are facing errors with your Modaco Nodata because you haven't setup any data connection (3G or GPRS) to your provider. Try setting it up and running Modaco Nodata again.
It works a breeze for me. But then again, if you don't have any connections setup, you shouldn't worry about anything in fact.

When you go to Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Network/and select My Work Network, click EDIT then click on the Proxy Settings tab and check this network connects to the internet....
Simply go into the network settings area (the same area people have noted above) and remove every connection other than your wi-fi.
Poke around, you'll figure it out.
Even easier
Call your carrier and disable data to that phone. Then there are NO worries that you accidentally change a setting and get a big bill as a result.
