WiFi card in xdaII......
I have installed a sandisk wifi card in the xdaii and it detects hot spots ok but when i try to open a page in IE comes up page not found. I have the network card settings to "this card connects to the internet etc" and i think i'm doing everything ok. surely not all the hotspots in manchester uk can be locked can they?? are we really a nation of paranoid people?? I don't want to crash networks just get me a free fast connection in St Ann's Square whilst I'm having lunch!!
any ideas.
well if i had a wireless lan and a connection to the internet i surely would have a firewall aswell
suppose the easiest way to find out where your issue is, is if you have a wireless lan at home which you can test the connection with
read a review which say that the sandisk card works ok with the xda2
The SanDisk WiFi card works for sure. I'm writing this with it.
Check the network settings under Settings->Connections->Network->Extended->Networkcard->Wireless. You may have to manually select and enable the network.

I have just enquired of Expansys UK if the Sandisk WiFi SD Card will work with the XDA II and they said NO, it has problems???? As I can't find another WiFi D card anywhere, it leaves me a little frustrated. Particularly as it seems it (XDA II) doesn't work with Tom Tom Navigator 11 Bluetooth either, which was my next purchase! If a few people can CONFIRM that the XDA 11 does actually work with the Sandisk WiFi Card, I'll risk buying one, as I need WiFi. Many thanks Steve
Not being to rude here, however Expansys told you crap.. I'm using one here which was purchased from Expansys. Albeit a little difficult to set up I'm online with my own home wireless Network.
There is another WiFi card available in the market, saw it in an interview with XDA sales people, it's from Socket. Got a review here.
http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/socket_SD_wifi.htm
work for me
sundisk worked for me right from the box. no driver to install.
just entered my home wlan wep password and got connected.
The original person asking about it: if a network need a key,
it can often show up as "active" but in IE will simply won't load anything...

Hi there, thanks for your response. I access the Internet via a Broadband connection through a Wireless Router in my Office and wish to use the XDA II around the office on occasion (with a working WiFi SD Card installed). Have you used your WiFi card in similar circumstances? I am cautious because Bluetooth Car Kit doesn't work, Bluetooth GPS doesn't work at the moment (appreciate this is not WiFi) but trying to buy something this time around THAT DOES WORK with the XDA II. many thanks Steve
Your impression regarding the XDA II is wrong.
Thanks to TOWA Bluetooth GPS does work. Its just that Microsoft is trying to impose a different Bluetooth architecture than that HP has been using with the IPAQ (they've done it before and they'll do it again).
As I said above, I've been using the SanDisk WiFi-card on my XDA II since day 1 when I got the device. I've used in at home with my wireless router, in the office through an access point and in the hotspot at Starbucks.
Only problems I've had sofar were in one network that was using a D-Link access point, where I couldn't get in - on the other hand also my PC had problems with this network).
When you insert the card that LED on it should start flashing. If it doesn't turn solid green(yellow) after a few minutes, the network is not connecting. You can check this through the applet on the task bar (Wireless network status). If it says searching it hasn't found or connected to your network. In this case go to Settings->Connections-->Connections->Extended->Networkcard. Ith should list the available networks. Select your network and select Connect on the options popup-menu. If you have encryption enabled it will ask you for the paramters (I've had to got through this procedure a couple of times when I put in a wrong code on the initial setup).
If the LED is solid green then you have connected to the network. If PIE doesn't work check the IP-settings again using that applet on the task bar (Wireless Network Status).
ANd I'm sure that Bluetooth Car Kit will be working soon also. But then again, the XDA doesn't have (andd never promised) Voice Dialing anyway. :?
Quote ex tbd.immigrantsong.de "Your impression regarding the XDA II is wrong."
Thanks for this. I am really pleased with my XDA II. I guess I wanted to install Bluetooth GPS and Handsfree Bluetooth in my car and then found that my chosen purchases the Tom Tom Navigator 2 Bluetooth GPS and the Parrot CK3000 Handsfree Car kit don't currently work with the XDA II Bluetooth. I understand that Tom Tom/O2 etc are working on it.
A colleague has since told me that I wouldn't get BOTH devices working together in my car at the same time anyway. i.e. I could have a Bluetooth Car Kit or a Bluetooth GPS but not have the 2 devices working together? Do you know if this is correct? I appreciate your help on this.
My Wireless Network/Broadband router is the Netgear 824M 802.11B and this is what I wish to use in conjunction with SD WIFI Card in my XDA II.
When I tried to order from Expansys and told them it eas for use with an O2 XDA II they said "It will not work" so you can see my predicament. £100+ purchase then possible not work, and they have pre-warned me, so a refund would be looking iffy?
Best regards Steve Grunnill
@Steve Grunnill
I don´t know what Expansys UK says about the SanDisk WiFI, I have bought one for 3 weeks ago using with the XDA II without any problem , just works.
I´m using too TomTom with a SatNav Bluetooth GPS and a BT headset.
Of couse I use Towas bluetooth patch.

JoseF
Steve,
If you read this thread, you'll discover that someone called Towa has fixed the Bluetooth problem, so you should be fine once you've applied his patch. Here's a quote from that thread of someone who can answer your question about simultaneous Bluetooth connections:

So there you have it!
I have the same problem as Xdaer, I've received advice off-forum from various people (thanks Faisal, tbd and others) but I still can't browse my broadband connection. All I keep getting is that 'this page cannot be found'
Can anyone who has successfully done this please just post the settings they have at their 'network card' settings?
BTW, I understand that its currently impossible to activesync via wifi, can anyone confirm/deny this?
@andygarside
I use to active sync via wifi.
I´m using a Sandisk SD wifi card. XDA II.
I have at home a D-link 614+ with the firmware upgrade (D-link)
It just works.
When I travell and try to connect to some hot spots that are password protected, then I get the messange can´t load the page.
But will normal unprocteded spots no problems. Okey in same airports you have to pay to access the AP but thats another story.

@andygarside
Under connections->Advanced->Network card-> wireless tab, you should see your signal labeled 'available' or connected.
The networks to access is 'all available'
and check 'automatically connect to non-preferred networks'
in the network adapters tab, you should
my network connects to (work or internet) - works with both for me, but each time it reverts to work, even if i save internet..
see the San DisK Wifi card, clicking on it should give you
the ip address screen on one tab and the name server in another tab. in my case i have to specify the ip, the subnet and the default gateway (rather than server assigned), and the name server
Then under connections->select networks-> 'programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using: here i have the name of the network which you configured above.
this should be easily visible from the connections->tasks tab and you can now set the proxy from here - usually with port 8080.
I hope this helps - let me know if it works and do ask again if i am missing out something here..
get a connection but no luck surfing!
hi every1,
iv followed d instructions etc but no luck browsing however i get a padlock icon in the corner with a red slash across it - what does that mean?
thanks in advance!

you're correct. the XDA II doesnt have builtin WiFi, you need
a small attachment "sandisk wifi card". search for it via google.
Faisal, followed your instructions to the letter and....... it works!! Thanks ever so much, I'm really grateful!
Now, last question, can I activesync via WiFi?
Thanks again.....
Andy.

Great to hear that it worked and i am delighted to have been of help.
I have not tried synching via Wi-Fi - so i have no idea. Do let me know if you get it to work.
One can obviously access an email account, though i have not been able to access my mail on the exchange server via WiFi for some reason but i suspect it is a configuration issue that i have not sorted so far

Hi all,
Could someone please tell me why I can connet to my wireless network at home, but I can't view any web pages or download any emails on my XDA II!!
Any help would be greatly recieved!!
Cheers Guys
Works fine for me mate..
Things to check.
1) XDAII Has an ip address assigned to it within the correct subnet for your home wifi.
2) XDAII Has the correct default gateway configured which will either be your wireless access router, or another type of router you have that provides internet access.
3) That your XDAII can see the network available to it through the start, setting, connections, connections, advanced, network card bit. Make sure that you actually tell it to connect to your network too. If you can't see it and you are sure the wifi card is installed ok, make sure that you have enabled SSID broadcast on your WAP.
Let us know how you get on.
Rgds,
Rob.
rob,
what do you mean, "make sure you have sidd enabled on you wap" ??
i have beeb trying to get this to work for days..
lmk m8
Zetex
He means..
He means that your Wireless accesspoint should have broadcast SSID enabled. If you have not intentionaly disabled it, it is most likely that it is enabled and thus not the issue. Is your wireless WEP encrypted? If it is, did the Pocketpc ask you specifically for the WEP encryption key when it found your network?

I am using a XDA II. Having received a faulty 'backpack', now replaced, I am still trying to get it to connect through a Sandisk CF Wi-Fi card to a D-Link 900+ AP hanging off an Intel router and my Linux server. In desperation I connected the CF card through a PCMICA adaptor into my notebook. After tweaking the 900+ AP (using v. 2.61 firmware), I found that it liked 64kb WEP, SSID on, Channel 11, Infrastructure (not Ad Hoc), and left on fully automatic so D-Link 650 Wi-Fi card in my notebook runs at 22 Mbps, and the Sandisk card at 11 Mbps.
But does it run in the XDA II you ask? Nope! I think that Sandisk's software leaves a lot to be desired. I am using vxIPConfig and vxUtil tools to see what is what ... but to no effect. I would gladly flick the Sandisk card now I know their software is lacking.
Any clues from other users?
Driving me nuts
Sorry not to actually come up with answers, but I thought you might gather some comfort from the fact that my XDA II/Sandisk combo is driving me nuts too. You are not alone....!
First thing I did was remove the pre-installed Socket wifi s/w and install the Sandisk stuff, but although my XDA can happily see my network, it will not log on no matter what I seem to do.
Am going to review some of the other helpful posts here and try the tips and will report back......!

The CD-ROM that came with mine seems to have been designed for WinCE, and not Mobile Windows 2003 for the PPC. As a result I cannot get rid of the Sandisk 128M+WiFi CompactFlash Card settings from the 'Configure Network Adaptors' area. I have to go in via my PC and ActiveSync (3.7) and rename the two offending .dll files before the CD-ROM software removes the drivers. I manually delete the renamed .dll.old files from the XDA II.
Sandisk seem pretty useless. I let them know of these problems and the link they gave me was to the straight wireless LAN card ... That didn't work, so go figure!
I am told the Sockets drivers out of the UK are better (for basically the same card), however, their FTP site does not work .. some say it hasn't worked since April 2004. More useless information, except that their docs. leave Sandisk for dead!
I keep wondering what the so-called 'Zero Configuration' tools that are supposed to be part of Mobile Windows 2003 actually do? I just can't see why the Sandisk card works with my D-Link DWL-900AP+ (802.11b/g) and with my ancient Airport access points on my notebook, but not on the XDA II on the rare occasions that I get the blinking green light (very rare and I don't know why???). <sigh!>
Hi folks, I'm new to the XDA 2. I was wondering if there is some way to get it to connect to my wireless network at home? I've started reading up on the subject but it's not making much sense yet. What do I need to get started, and how do I configure the XDA?
Thanks for your help in advance.
networking
This may be too simplistic but if you just need to transfer files or download email from time to time, once you connect via the cradle and activesync to any of the PCs on the network, then you'll be on the network anyway. No need to make any other connections.
Thanks, but basically I want to be able to use my broadband connection on my XDA (sounds lazy I know, but it'll save dragging out my old laptop when my wife is using the desktop). Seems I need a wireless card for the XDA. Which is a bit of a shortcoming, when it can work as a wireless modem for my laptop (not that I would at dial-up rates)
You could use a bluetooth dongle on your pc and the bluetooth on your xda2 to do this. If you wish to use wifi you will need either an sd wifi card or to buy the backpack and a cf wireless card. the xda2 as it stands has no wifi capability and I understand there are some major problems getting the additional hardware to work satisfactorily so choose something that the supplier guarantees to work with your configuration.
You can also get a Bluetooth Access Point with Ethernet input (incase you already have a router or something).
Thanks guys, sorry I took so long to reply, been away....
I'll give the bluetooth thing a try, don't fancy a dodgy wifi card, which is a pity cos Sandisk now do one with 256mb memory on board so that you can have your wifi access, and still have some useful extra memory too.
Hi,
Before switching to the Wizard - I had a Magician with a SanDisk WIFI card. This little card came with the SanDisk wifi utility which was really great since is gave you an overview of all availlable networks - their encryption state, signal strength etc... all in a neat table and very nice to use.
The internal Wifi software that comes with the wizard is really lacking....
Can you guys recommend a really good utility to discover and connect to wifi access points?
I am already using wififofum - which is slow to load, sluggish and not very flexible.
I have seen hitchhiker (http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/)- but read that many users have experienced major bugs and errors with it .
Any other good option - quick, flexible and easy?
Cheers.

how did you get pocketwinc workin with a wizard?
in my opinion the best id wififofum 2.0 which which now works with WM5, lts you search for networks and see which have WEP enabled and which don't allowing you to have FREE internet access.
I sat in an industrial state the other morning waiting for the garage to open, picked up a linksys router with no security and wahey, I was surfing the net FREE!!!
Plus to double the deal the software is free, haven't got a link, do a search on google, the latest version in the forum.

REMARK you need to install .NET Compact Framework 2.0
The link is on their page, but to install you first need to add it to the pocket PC using your PC (do not install yet on your device, but first disconnect the USB cable and kill the activesync on your PDA). Afterwards you can install it on your device (do not install on sd card!)

the wifi connection manager that comes with this device is really starting to annoy me. it tries to connect to ap's that aren't even within range. for example i'll be at starbucks connect to 'tmobile' then go to a friends house and connect to 'linksys' get home and expect it to connect to my home network but when i go to the wireless page it says 'connecting' to tmobile then it will go and try to connect to linksys..... ugh it really pisses me off!!

You want to create an "Ad hoc" wireless network between two devices.
I've just started using pocketwinc and it has the ability to start an ad hoc network, once it's created you can just connect to the new network using the other ppc. I'm not sure how to transfer files once you're connected but I expect one of the improved file explorer apps will be able to do it.
I've just purchased PocketWinc and whenever I start it, I get an error:
Unable to locate adapter.
If it was turned off, please turn it on now.

Hi!
I have a huge problem, with my tytn HTC
I have a wireles network at home. It is built like this:
Cable modem --> (not wireless)Router--> computer (conected to the router via UTP cable, that means with ordinary network adapter card).
In this computer, i have WIRELESS USB card, configured as Access point (AP), so the wireless networks works just fine. With my laptop i can connect to internet through this card with no problem at all...
But, when i try to connect to internet with my TyTN, it just won't work... it finds wireless network, it sais it is available, but when i try to connect, nothing happens. it sais "connecting" and than- nothing happens... after several tries, it sais that my wireless network is unavailable... when i reset my Tynt, it sais it is available again, but the same story again...after several attempts to connect to wireless network, it sais unavailable and that's it...
What is wrong? i tried everything, im quite desspered here...
Well, tnx in advance for any suggestions and advices...
I appologise for my bad english, too...
TNX!
Do you have any restrictions in your Acess point configuration? If yo have, just remove it or reconfigure for acess with your TyTN. Try to remove WEP or MAC filtering or firewall...
Resolving your wireless problems ...
There's actually several things you need to check.
First, on the Router side, insure that you are not restricting your wireless access. For instance, is your Router set to G Only or is it b/g?
Next, on your router side, make sure your router is not hidden. If so, then you'll need to manually add the router via Configure Wireless Networks on your TyTN. At the top is "Add New...". Choose this and insert your settings for your wireless router.
On the TyTN (HTC Hermes) side of things, you need to see if you are set to be B only or if you've upgraded (I think most ROMs on this site have this fix installed) and your device is seen as a G device and therefore can connect to G only devices.
These should hopefully resolve your issues.
i removed restrictions and firewall and still nothing...
Next thing, my wireless Access Point is set to 54g Auto.
On my Tynt i have installed Windows mobile 6 profesional, CE OS 5.2.1437 (build 17944.0.3.1)
I don't know exactly where should i look if my HTC is wireless is B or G...
I tried to change settings on my AP from 54g Auto to 802.11B and to to 802.11G and vice versa, but still nothing...
As i wrote before, i don't have wireless router i just have an ordinary router and then wireless USB card in one of the computers, so i can connect with my laptop to internet over this card. With laptop it works excelent.
So, can anyone suggest what kind of OS should i install on my HTC in order to fix this, and where can i get one?
TNX for so far, and TNX in advance for any further information or suggestion!
Still having problems...i tried everything...
i tried to connect to wireless network at friend's wireless router...TyNT found a signal, everything was just fine, then asked me for key (friend has WEP protection), i typed the password, and then i couldn't connect again...
I havo no clue whatsoever anymore...
Anyone with same problem?? Any suggestions?
Tnx in advance for any advice...
hmm...
I guess it is a hardware problem with my tynt's WI-FI...i can't think of anything else... i tried everything, still can not connect...
Im getting quite desspered with this HTC... i guess i'll sell it and buy NOKIA N95 or something like that...
well, if someone by any chance know where the problem is, i thanks in advance for every advice or suggestion

So I've bought different wifi router and I've no problems now.
So anyone who is having dead wifi in hermes try to deactivate wifi encryption and try a different router (friends house or public wifi hotspot)

Recently bought my wife one of these devices and just spent two whole days looking for a solution and that was it.. mixed mode - I had mine set to "G" only! Sometimes the solution is too simple for the geek to be able to spot I guess - maybe the wife would have found it faster!
Thanks for the solution.. as with all forums I always suggest a FAQ with these solutions or links to the threads/posts with these tips and resolutions.

Lucky... Mine did not connect anymore, flashed black majik over schaps3.6 and voilla! worked again... without touching the router.... Will try last schaps tonight.... I´m tired of flashing and reinstalling....
I just moved into this new place, just got the Cox Cable internet installed yesterday, picked up a new "Belkin N Wireless Router" model # F5D8233-4. Works fine with the laptop- I've had it setup using unsecured, WEP, & WPA/WPA2 Personal. No problems on the laptop. Inexpensive Dell Inspiron with Vista Home Basic.
However, the Wing will not cooperate at all. It only wants to connect to unsecured networks. It will connect to mine and others it detects in the appt complex. But as soon as any type of security is enabled it just tries to connect for a few seconds, then the network becomes unavailable. I'm soo tired of clicking around in the Wing with this stylus, I'm about to throw it out the window.
I've set up a static IP on the laptop so to better work with port forwarding & Azureus. Will this have an effect on what I'm trying to do? I can't see how it would, but I'm no expert.....
So here's what I've done. In the routers setup page, I've selected 64bit wep, typed in a passkey and hit generate. Wrote down the 4 keys it generated, saved the changes and exited the router setup. I think where I'm messing up is what I should be doing next with the Wing. Can anyone walk me through this?
About the only thing of note that I've done to the Wing as far as tweaking is concerned is to install Home Screen/Battery Status, overclocked to 260, and tweaked the registry to allow ring tones from the sd card.
HELP!!
maybe your wing uses the same ports as the ones you've forwarded to connect to your router. You should always make it really obscure (something like 65530-65534) to make sure that there are no conflicts between other apps and any port related protections your ISP may have implemented.
You are setting up your wing with the key, right? It might just be that the wing is incompatible with 64bit wep.
Let me clarify- the port forwarding was set up for the Azureus bit torrent client. Way obscure ports-in the 49,xxx-50,xxx range.
Yeah, setting up the wing with the key. The only choices are 64 and 128bit wep. And the WPA/PSK. Neither work. When the little window pops up asking for the net work key, I enter one of the ones I wrote down. The thing doesn't seem to be compatible with any type of security. Which kinda sucks....To use the wi-fi at home, I have to leave my router open to "signal thieves".
thats funny, actually.
I have my linksys wrt54g set to 64 bit 10 hex security and it works just fine. Maybe your problem has something to do with the wireless n part of your router? The wing is not compatible with draft-n. Does your router also broadcast with wireless-g or b?
It does...I just switched it over. Waiting for the Wing to reboot then I'll try again. Good thinking.
Ok, that didn't work either. The selections in the router are
1- Off
2- 802.11g,
3- 802.11g, 802.11b, 802.11n
4- 802.11n
It was on #3, I changed to #2 and no luck. Grrr...
Have a look on your wireless lan power settings, my Wing also had huge wifi problems all fixed when I changed the power to better performance.
I think I found a thread that mentioned that while researching this problem. Anyways, I've already made that change.
Which network adapter is the wi-fi one? Is it this- "SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter"?
oh by the way just remembered something from my noob years.
make sure that your wing's adapter connects to "the internet" not "work"

I've had the exact same issue with my MDA and originally with my Wing. It works fine now, I'm not sure why.
I just flashed to Open Touch 6.5. Still a no-go.

The wifi is just like a laptop's wifi, it connects to a wireless router and since it's not going through the cell phone towers, it will not charge you.

ok thank you very much
OMG....I'm getting soooooooooooooo tired of dickin around with this thing. Now it won't connect to any network, secured or not.
I tried importing a certificate from IE on my laptop, because I got an error message on the wing saying the net work needed a personal certificate to identify me. Didn't work.
I tried a hard rest. Didn't work.
I've tried about 56,345 soft resets. Didn't work.
If there were any trees in the state of Kansas, I'd go bang my head on one of them. :

It works fine with my current ROM. (JustMe by... Me. lol)
I'm pretty sure it's not a ROM issue...I just flashed this thing late last night. It started not connecting to anything late afternoon yesterday, while the stock T-Mobile ROM was installed.
The stock ROM never worked properly for me...
Try another ROM.
