I was thinking it would be cool to have a ROMKitchen that would let you upload your own bootgraphics. You would have to of course keep it in the name bootimage.bmp...
Just a thought as all attempts for me to get the ROMKitchen to work have failed.... Been trying to add my own bootimage (which is done) and sounds.
Problem is that the kitchen currently doesn't take just any bmp, it has to a very specific format: Windows, 16 bit, inverted, R5G6B5 from Photoshop. I'm still looking for an image filter that converts to this specific format. (IM's "convert" doesn't..)

Yes, I know. I already have the image in the correct format.... just wasn't able to get the kitchen to work for me even when I installed Linux Red Hat... latest version. (knows he did something wrong, just dosen't understand perl and unix enough)
i'll tell you what... since im sure its very difficult to program the kitchen to convert an image....
would it be easier if it just 'checked' for correct format?
if its good, it will process it
if not, it will reject it!
im sure its much simpler to program this way
kinda like what yahoo does for the user profiles...
after you upload the image, if its not too big for specs, it posts it.
if not, it tells u image too big.
good luck!
we love and appriciate your work tremendously
in our kitchen we have already plenty of bootimages working like Windows Bliss, Southpark, and more
are you talkin about BOOT IMAGE?? the splashie thing that comes up when u reboot the device? ... i've never seen them in kitchen.

Yorch, I've never seen them in Jeff's Kitchen if its the kitchen you mentioned, but other kitchen I am not too sure...
I'm not talking about Jeff Kitchen, I'm talking about Kalex Kitchen. Kalex, me, and some others have contributed to make this kitchen, which is so far the best of the breed, it has plenty of customizations, (kalex says is too much ) but you can customize among cool bootimages, dialpad skins, today screens, and add excellent programs like Resco Explorer 2003, SPB Pocket Plus 1.3, Full screen Keyboard, Pocket Backup, and many more, its really cool. The reason that I can't share it with you guys (yet), is that as you can see these are paid programs, and they are already registered in the ROM, so If I post it online, for people to freely download ROMs in the kitchen, it would be illegal, since they are not my own programs. Alex was trying to see if there was a way that you could put a text field, (kind of the same as in the Theft Protection name entry) so people can put their own serials and the ROM would come preregistered, but so far he can't make it work yet. (he is the only programmer of the group). Let me see what can we do to see if we just remove the registration part and fix some stuff so we can get the Kitchen live so people can start downloading ROMs.

I tried and it works perfectly with windows 2003 using Cygwin, perl and bash, and using Adobe Photoshop 7.5 with R5G6B5 and inverted( the image is upside down) and save it to 16 bit with 151k. I just followed the instruction of XDA-developers.

I have valid licenses!
Yorch, I have valid licenses for all the apps you mention. And Yes, I would love to have them in ROM. Isn't there a way I can get such a special ROM?
patience is the mother of all virtues, the kitchen is coming VERY soon, believe me, it will be well worth the wait!
Will this Kitchen have Pocket Informant and @Mail? It would be fantastic to have those loaded in ROM
The Yorch & Kalex ROM Kitchen
I've cooked in Jeff's kitchen in the past and curious to find out what's the URL of the ROM kitchen that Yorch, Kalex and a few others created? I'd like to be able to cook my own ROM with a different boot image too! Thanks in advance.

It is window bmp
How can I
1- inverted
2- R5G6B5

Regarding Pocket Informant and @Mail, too big, as It is the Kitchen has a LOT of stuff. (remember that you only have 2~3MB)
Address, soon At yorch.net, we are in the process of moving the kitchen from an undisclosured location to Yorch.net. The kitchen is ready and working, just needs a couple of fine tunning, which we are working on
Instructions:
Have you tried saving a bmp file in photoshop before?
It tells you right there and there among the options to save the BMP file inverted and if you click in options you can do the R5G6B5.
Is not hard, is right there when you save your file.

Announcing: ROMkitchen
Special Edition ROMs are soooo yesterday.... We're proud to unveil our largest project yet: ROMkitchen. Now you too can modify your ROM to contain precisely what you need. Create your personal ROM, based on the ROM you like.
Wanna see: Have a look at our showroom kitchen to see what we mean. As you can see the showroom kitchen shows the PPC2002 based 3.17.03 ROM released by O2, as well as the 4.00.05 Microsoft WM2003 test ROM. Neither of these ROMs is really present though: you need to download the scripts, include your own ROM images, and run the scripts on your own unix machine. But once you do, you and your friends can create ROMs to your heart's content.
Why didn't we just include these files and make it all work? Because we're not licensed to distribute these ROMs, that's why.
So now what?
Play around to see if you like it.
download all the files visible when logging in using FTP to xda-developers.com username 'kitchen', password 'kitchen'.
Put them on your own unix machine, which should be capable of executing php scripts, and which should have a 'little' memory, disk and processing power left over. (We're afraid ROMkitchen wasn't built with resource-efficiency in mind.)
Add your own ROM files, see the readme files in the "data/00[...]/_/cfg" directories for details.
Notes:
If you set up your ROMkitchen, make sure you only use it for yourself, and with ROMs you legally own. We're not responsible for abuses.
If you use an ftp-client which can ignore files which are newer on your side, you can regularly check for updates and always have the newest kitchen.
ROMkitchen does not yet support outputting self-extracting binaries a-la Jeff's exe. We're working on that.
ROMkitchen currently supports English language ROMs only. We're working on this too.
The welcome exe is back in ROMs made with it: a little too much hassle to make our own. So you'll have to go through the silly tutorial every cold-boot.
XDAunlock is missing still. (It will be incorporated, but most people will be making 4.00.05 ROMs, and it doesn't work on that anyway...)
How does it work?
The ROMkitchen consists of a number of php scripts that present the form with all the options to choose from, and which copy files ready for our 'mkrom' utility to process. If you take a look you can see the raw structure of the data that is presented and inserted into the ROM. We'll find some time soon to explain, but you can already learn quite a bit if you look at the files and directories carefully.
xda-developers u are AWESOME
I'm going to try it as soon as i get home tonight. So all that is needed at first is a 2003 or 2002 image file?
thanks
alex
This looks awesome
Is it possible to run this program on Cygwin ? I have configuered the Cygwin download to include Bash and Perl but can't find a reference to dd. I confess that although I have a reasonable amount of programming experience I have never used Unix before so don't even know how to invoke the scripts so any help would be much appreciated.
Richard
just uploaded everything to my unix box and tried to run setup.sh from 4.00.05 directory. i also uploaded bootloader.nb0 and rom.nb1 files to the cfg directory. when i run ./setup.sh this is what i get:
[[email protected] _]# ./setup.sh
Usage: splitrom <romimage(s)> [options]
-wx xipchain where to write xipchain
-wo osrom where to write output image
-wb bitmap where to write bitmap
-wl bootloader where to write bootloader
-rl bootloader which bootloader to use for NBF
-n nbfinfotext what NBF header to use [ex: PW10A1-ENG-3.16-007]
-ri nbfinfofile or where to read NBF header info from
-wi nbfinfofile where to save NBF header info
-rx xipchain where to get xipchain from
-rb bitmap where to get bitmap from
-rm [email protected] insert new romsection.
-ob offset where to find the bootup image
-oe offset the end of the desired os image ( default: 0x81f00000 )
-t NBF | B000FF | NB? | IMG type of result image (default is NB1)
also when i tried to convert the default.fdf file to default.reg i get error saying "unknown fdf file signature" and it creates a 0 byte default.reg file.
any help is appreciated. i know i'm asking too many questions, but same happened with ur mkrom tools and once i got answers from u i was able to build roms without any problems.
thanks
alex
Hold on a tick, if you guys added one more feature it would go nova, however. Some features I would like to see is the ability to mix drinks, roll joints, cook dinner, and cure premature baldness/cancer.
It would also be nice if you could arrange for the program to be delivered to my house by the drunken, naked Chinese twins, Fok u and Fok me.
You guys are the bomb. Keep up the great work!

this implies that you should also have setup a webserver, for running the php scripts.
you will have to change the 'splitrom' commandline in setup.sh depending on what source file you have.
it is not a configure all automatically script, just a guide, to what sort of is supposed to happen for setup.
Holy Cow, you guys are amazing....
This is just a short message to say I'm fighting with it as we speak. My friend's box does have PHP, this is good. I've already found that it needs two subdirs under its root ('download' and 'workspace') to be world-writeable. Took me a while to figure that one out. Haven't got it running yet though, this ROM setup.sh thing is far less than intuitive. But I have the two ROMs which have all the other mumbo-jumbo done: 3.17.03 and 4.00.05, and I will get this to run, if it's the last thing I do.

OK, here's the status:
I'm close, really close. It wouldn't detect my OS, the bash on the system I'm on is in /usr/local/bin instead of /bin and now it's complaining about a missing perl file. I'm working on it though...
probably you are missing http://search.cpan.org/author/GBARR/Scalar-List-Utils-1.11/
which is included with perl 5.8, but not with perl 5.6.*
if you don't have root access to you box, you can also install ( see the README for build instructions ) list-utils in your home directory, by editing the generated Makefile, and changing 'PREFIX=$(HOME)', and then adding
Code:
export PERL5LIB=$HOME/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.*
to your environment. ( with '*' your perl version )
It's working
It's working!!!
With a little help, I got it to work !!!
Have a look at http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/ROMkitchen
I just created my first ROM!
Hi, I tried create 4.00 based Rom on Jeff web and it works... thanks.
I discovered only small problem, that there are not installed links in Programs to extra included programs. But I can do it manually for now.
I tried to start my version of romkitchen on my notebook but I was stopped on integration PHP to IIS. I tried some last installer php-4.3.2-installer.exe for Windows but I got CGI error when I tried to access index.php. I'll work on it.
I hope that it will run too, like mkrom on Cygwin.

Ah, you haven't noticed that we put these in subfolders maybe. Go to Programs, and you should see subfolders. If you unchecked the option to put in these subfolders, then you have also unchecked everything 'below' that, meaning you haven't installed these programs.

Hi !
Thanks all developers! Great work
One request though: please put a zipped version of your ROMKitchen at your ftp -> downloading hundreds of files is a mess *g*
Thanks... Jabba
This is so frustrating: I had it working perfectly, and now all of a sudden it stopped working. I'm working on it...
It's working now. Not really sure what was up, but it seems to have fixed itself.
Nice!!! These new ROMs are sooo cool. All the programs are stored in neat subfolders with icons....
I did find that D9 and PocketCHAT (The EVB apps) do not yet work on WM2003. It complains some EVB shared files are still missing.
Hi Jeff, just to say I've successfully used your ROM builder principally it has to be said to get hold of 4.00.05 so I only choose the Hot Fix item.
Checked in startup (which I've not looked in before) to see the hotfix and its there, there is also aFlashman, cFlashman Handsfree poutlook, SMSReciever, stk & Ussd. Are these part of the normal ROM? Just want to check that the thing is running as lean and clean as it can.
Many Thanks

This is my first C# util!
It facilitates ExtRom update process. All you need to do is to put your cab files to Ext and run this utility, then the utility will create Config.txt at Ext with all cabs specified as "CAB: path2cab". If you need to get your original Config, then check ConfigOld at Ext

Boy, hope you finaally tried it! And try this one also. This is my 2nd C# util
Shortly what it does:
UnZips your files with consecutive registry values (reg V4) import and splash writing
It means that you can zip all your files to one file called Setup.zip and place it anywhere (storage/ext). After hard reset, the utility is called and it extracts all your files and restores your favorite registry settings (saved to Setup.reg) and writes your splash.
btw: read za manual !
ps: the concept is the same, if u see somethin' then there is a trouble
Re: Man, wher z feedback?? Did u try it?
Attention!
The file was re-uploaded, so there mustn't be any CRC errors now
System Requirements
Regarding system requirements, the program needs old version of ER\Autorun.exe that understands ER\Config.txt
Program was not tested on XDA1! It was partially tested (w/o hard-resets on XDA2 / 1.72TM
Version 1.1
Wazzza!
Here is a new version of Restorator utility. The new features are:
+ now it deletes content of \My Documents;\Windows\Start Menu;\Windows\Startup folders (as people wanted
+ TimeZone offset is not resetted anymore
Note:
Make sure you have prepared your customized Start Menu (!!!) and Startup (!!!) folders, otherwise you won't be able to see Programs after hard-resetting your device. Please, check the attached sample to prevent yourself from having problems with this utility or use version 1.0 that don't delete anything
Umm... could anyone translate this into English for me?
I don't even understand the title of the thread.
In another thread, SP says that one of these downloads will retrieve data back on hard resets. Sounds like a useful tool, if only I understood what the hell these posts mean.

Here we go...
(assuming that you downloaded 'RestoreItV1_1_PPC.ARMV4.CAB' & installed it to your device)
This program is designed to restore your files, folders and registry settings from a ZIP-format archive and it can also write some splash screens
For this purpose, you need to make a ZIP-format archive with files & folders you want to get restored after hard-reset. Just run your favorite pocket zip archiver (for instance PocketRAR) and archive those files & folders that you want to see after hard-resetting device. Name your archive "Setup.zip" and place it to one of the following places: storage, storage card or extended rom.
Before doing further instruction make sure you have unlocked your ExtendedROM using ExtUnlocker.
If your rom is unlocked try to run the utility from \Storage\RestoreIt. If you had no messages after running it, then the utility installed itself successively. And your files & folders placed to 'Setup.zip' will be restored on next hard-resets.
If you're interested in restoring registry settings, then you need to get pocket registry editors that support exporting/saving to .reg files. After saving your favorite registry settings you will need to combine them to one .reg file and name it 'Setup.reg'. Then, you will need to place it to your archive's root folder (aka '\') So, you will have a file 'Setup.reg' placed to the root folder of your 'Setup.zip'. That's all folks
I strongly recommend you to see sample 'setup.zip' & 'manual.txt'
DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR CURRENT '\WINDOWS\STARTUP' & '\WINDOWS\START MENU' FOLDERS TO YOUR SETUP.ZIP!!!
You're welcome to ask me questions anytime!
Aaah, OK. That makes more sense
Sounds like a handy little tool then. Might have a play later.
Thanks, SP!
RAR-support
Is there anyone who is interested in rar-support for restorator?
Attention: Restorator v1.0 & 1.1
Attention: Restorator v1.0 & 1.1 are originally supported by I-Mate 1.72! All you need to do here is to use Extended ROM unlocker prior to running the utility
Feedback
Any feedback so far?
SP,
Restorator seems like a winner!!! I have been hitting my head on the rocks for a while trying to script a recovery using nscriptm as a scripting tool to call cab files which I keep on a storage card. Looks like using your tool a lot of the tedious scripting can be simplified by simply copying the files where they need to go. The challenge is knowing exactly what to copy & where... Is it possible to add the ability to call CAB files to your already excellent utility?
I am imagining putting all the CAB files in say a folder like \CABs in the Setup.zip and then having Restorator calling them one by one after finishing off with all else that it does. Can this be done? Additionally can you add ability to call registry imports at two points? You may wish to call registry import at the beginning and once more at the end after all cab file execution has been completed. This would be useful to restore application settings etc which the cab execution would overwrite to default. You would obviously need to keep two .reg files in the zip file. Does this make sense?
Thanks once again for all your efforts. Regards

Unfortunately I don't have an XDA 1 device at my disposal and I'm unfamiliar with its tech info.
What happens when your xda1 is hard resetted? Does it install cab files? or does it run any configuration software?
If there is a such software (on XDA2 it is autorun.exe placed at ExtendedROM), then you must specify in the runner (which starts on hard-resets) the call to the restorator utility
Looking forward to assist you in porting restorator for XDA1 devices

Sorry for the delay...
I'm having lack of time now, thus I couldn't test it very well . Just let me know if you found some bugs...
Now you can create "\CABS" folder and place your cabs there. They will be processed after extraction and before registry import. So, you don't need to have two .reg files then.
I'm looking forward to your new ideas!
ps: another attachment is a set of registry settings splitted by .reg files. I'm using them to get my setup.reg. Just change what you need, delete some of them and run "make.bat". It will create setup.reg with all your settings.
btw, check out "Usher_-_Yeah_[44k].wma" & "Maroon5_-_This_Love_[64k].wma". Home-made ringtones ;-)))
for those who hadn't used Restorator before. !!! DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR "START MENU" & "STARTUP" FOLDERS TO THE SETUP.ZIP !!! AND READ DA MANUAL!!!
Cheers
SP,
I tried the Restore-It utility today and found that the earlier functionality of copying files & importing registry etc from setup.zip works quite well.
The \CABS folder was also restored onto my device so I guess thats an indication that my setup.zip file was contructed properly. I am sad to report that none of my cab files were triggered by Restore-It though. I think there is a small bug thats holding back this behaviour.
Your kind assistance to check & correct this will be most appreciated.
Thanks & Best Regards
Right, all you smart guys/gals out there, here's a thinker....
According to this page, the .nb file for the Artemis Splash Screen should be 196,608 bytes in size.
If I create one and mix it with an OS using Dark Simpson's HTCRT though, I ALWAYS get "invalid file size". Conversely, I can disassemble and re-assemble the same ROM (including splash screen of the correct size) and it works....
.....could somebody please explain - for I'm a bear of simple brain - why my custom-made splash screen seemingly upsets the applecart?
I know it doesn't matter, but it'll stop me tearing my hear from my head...
Yes, I know you *could* use the Automated Tool which - by the way - is absolutely excellent.
But, what if you wanted to do the whole thing in one flash?
Here goes then:
1) The NBH Headertypes Wiki tells us that a splash screen needs to be 196,608 bytes, so
2) Download the attached zip file and extract the contents to a new folder.
3) Create a 96dpi, 240x320 bmp image for your splash screen. Call this whatever you like, and put the image in the folder you created in step 2) above.
4) If you have the NB Image Converter (I found it here, a nod to the authors.), run it. Select the .bmp image you saved in 2) above. [I've included it in my attachment for those that don't have it already] Save the file in your folder as an nb file.
5) Copy your nb file to a new file "splash2.002". Also in the zip file are 2 files named "splash2.001" and "splash2.003".
6) Run "GlueSplash.bat".
7) Voila! The created "MainSplash.nb" can be flashed in its own right - that would make you mad because you could much easier use the automated tool - or (more sensibly) mixed in with other nb files in a custom ROM.
If anybody spots anything inaccurate, mis-spelled or just plain mental, let me know. The usual "I accept no responsibility" Government Health Warning applies. If you're scared about flashing - don't.

Good one andrew! Shouldn't step 5 read - rename nb to "splash2.002".
And step 7 shouldn't it be mainsplash.nb rather than mainsplash.bat?
Better you change the title of the thread to the title of the second post
Yes, and Yes, and done.

Dude, I downloaded the revised tool and triedit for a splash I know works - the resultant nb file is 150k, therefore would require the 'glue' routine to be run before it could be cooked in [to a working nbh file]. From your (obviously intimate) knowledge of your program - is this what it does before flashing? Just curious really...
EDIT: ? don't know what I did the first time - used the file suggested below by Mechsle...got the right result....apols to JC.

EDIT: It worked - Christ knows what I did the first time.
Sorry JC...I take it all back....

Hey swampy how you been?
I tried yesterday your recook kitchen... new upgrade version 1.2... but I have an issue after the step when you can mod the initflashfiles... and use that third party app... I cant remember the name the app that coverts unicode - ansi you know...
The kitchen freeze after that I choose save and then close the app hit enter to continue and nothing happens but something change on my system... my multimedia files like video avi wmv (flv is good); music mp3 and wma; TXT and reg files seems to loose its asociation to the respective players and programs... cause when I click twice over any of them... the IE7 launch itself and launching again many many windows and the task manager cant handle it to close them... I cant figured out how to fix this and why this happens so...
I ask you if you have an answer...
Do I need to format my PC?
Im uploading an example of how my machine sees in youtube but is uploading... wait for the uploading process.
thanks men

Yes the pad was runing!
Yes it remains runing on the background minimized there... so if i change the settings and disable the runing on the task bar minimized my asociations would back at the normal job?

file asociation on ppc or PC? the kitchen will not change things on it's own only you change thing useing the kitchen so I can't say but if some thing in the kitchen has got corrupted The best thing to do is start again run bat file select 1) then 1) in next menu clean, then run 1) again and past your nk.nbf and so on
YEP!!!
On my PC... even if I choose "open with..." then select windows media player... then "Always use this progran for this kind of file" then open... it opens the IE7 and goes crazy the video file uploading is so slow... what da... jejej i will edit add the link this can helps to understands it... yes I restart the kitchen and guess what it can't open now the HKCU.reg in the step user.hv and closes by itself... i think cause the asociation gets corrupt the kitchen cant do it... and yes i have install the reg workshop as you said...
Hope it works fine next time... I hate... format my PC cause i need to backup in DVD my data...

Sorry mate don't know what could have hapened to your pc but the kitchen only works on ppc rom's the batch file can only access the folder's below it, IE: inside the kitchen folder that the bat file was launched in, so i doubt it was the kitchen that caused your problem, But my son had some problems with IE7 and found all was OK after uninstalling it so before you go formating your pc insert your windows disk and choose repair
Thanks to the great job from all the greater guys for the Blackstone dialer.
But I am thinking whether anyone has a way to change the current white-based dialer to a black-based colour scheme. Thanks.

yes unpack the folder of the dialer and go through and manually change each and every part of the dialer using your favourite image editor. Repackage it up and wait for the adulation of the masses, or more likely someone to start moaning at you because you haven't done it exactly as they want you to... ;p
you mean the folder on the ppc itself or the cab provider ? ...
i don't mind doing the photoshop work if i have the jpg/gif/etc ... but i still need someone to package it into a cab ... as i don't know how
I too would like to know if there's a simpler way to do this.
I'm happy to edit all the files myself in photoshop, but...
When I extract the cab file i recieve alot of files with numerical extensions.
Fine and dandy, i've gone through a few of them and changed the extensions so that they are jpg/png etc just so i can view what they are.
Can anyone with previous experience of editing cab files like this write a simple howto, i.e. how to know which files are which and what format they should be saved in jpg/png/bmp/ico etc.
i saw from the _setup.xml file that all the filename are mentioned inside but was wondering if the marker of this cab can release the original package before cab-ing so that I can photoshop all the image file individual before they cab it again ...

It sounds like you didn't use a decent program to extract the cabs...
Try http://www.codeppc.com/telechargements/msceinf/msceinf.htm instead
oh and if you want some background reading ....

Give it ago, I think the pink images need to stay pink though.
I can cab it up if you need to but there are some free cabmakers around..
They aren't hard to use, the main problem I've found is giving them enough permissions to overwrite files..
this one is supposed to be okay, but I haven't tried it.
http://www.aperitto.com/content/category/23/226/lang,en/ LOL, okay I have tried it now, it's working under WINE on my ubuntru machine
Wince cabmanager is pretty nice as well, but it costs $99, the demo does 15 cabs I think..

If you do not want to pay for a cab maker to rebuild a cab after you change an image, you can do this by following these steps :
Run MSCEInf. Open the Cab you want to modify (or the TSK which are also Cabs) with the first button.
Make sure that the 9th button is not with red cross. Else click on it. This make sure that extraction preserves Folders names.
Click on the 7th button to extract all files.
Select or create a folder for the extraction.
Extraction is done !
Modify the file you want in the folder or subfolder without changing its name.
Put at the root of the folder you selected or created the Microsoft program (free) CABWIZ. (Do a G....E search)
Open a Dos Windows in the folder (CMD...).
Msceinf has rebuilt the Inf File a the root of your folder so you can do in CMD mode : Cabwiz "name of the inf file".
And your new CAB is at the root of your folder.
Easy, but not really automatic, nevertheless cheaper than with WinCE...
It would be SO cool if someone made a black Blackstone dialer, especially for black Xperia X1s.
I REALLY like the "slide to answer or hangup" function of the blackstone dailer, rather than just the "push to answer" version on the stock Xperia ROM/firmware.

Nice one Benoit,
Nothing beats MSCEInf for extraction
That aperitto one looks pretty neat for all inclusive building including reg editing etc.. damn site better than wince cabmaker and is free (for non commercial), so far so good..
I have installed the blackstone dialler by itje its cool but i thought it was this big digit one from blackstone modded for the X1.
Ive tried to download the big digit one from Blackstone but get no dl link by email, I have big sausage fingers and keep making mistakes with the default size touch dialler on the X1 and need a bigger digit keyset to aim my stubby fingers at while making calls.
Is there a big digit dialler available yet for the X1?.
Edit,: Just found this, a nice touch on the dialler by itje is the bluetooth headset icon that when connected changes from the default bt icon to a headset !
