# of times you can flash ROM - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

I was wondering how many times you can update the ROM on the XDA?
Since you are basically flashing a firmware onto a reflashable eeprom, I figured there has to be a limit as to how many times you can do it.
I bought a Tmobile XDA which I am running on AT&T Wireless. I played around the the XDA Developers Special ROM. It wasn't bad, but I figured I wouldn't use most of the stuff in there. I did like that it unlocked my phone however.
I ended up putting on the AT&T ROM form the Siemens website. I ended up putting it on twice. The first time it didn't put on the updated radio stack, so I hadda redo it again to get it all on.
I am very much interested in the 2003 version, but as much as I use beta software on my PC, I figured I'd wait for the final release of 2003 from the OEMs.
All in All this is a great place. I just got the thing yesterday although I been reading the forums here for a few days. Already leaned alot.

according to this intel doc they have tested their chips to be reliable upto at least 100000 times
flashing.

O2 uk new rom (end of this month)

After weeks of calling O2 and moaning on and on about the locked old 1.43 rom today I have been told by O2 we WILL finaly have a new rom (i guess 1.72) last day of march!
Finally
We were suppose to have it 2 weeks ago...I wont be holding my breath about this...we will see...
Unbelievable how long it's taken o2 to give people an official upgrade. Thank the lord for xda-devs, eh? HSPL & freedom all the way!
i bet its 1.66 rom o2 are really slacking at the moment....
Any clues where it will be available to download?
Really now so what is this the third or fourth date that we have heard. I will believe it when i see it as they say.
and yes I am pessimistic, especially when it comes to O2 and updates...
Also MidnightDraven it will be on the HTC site or may HTC Pedia, if it gets leaked....
Ahh good. thanks for that.
Lets hope it turns up then.
I doubt 1.72 .. It's incredibly frustrating dealing with them. I understand the reasons, but they don't help at all. And after all this waiting, chances are that they have only been looking at 1.48 and 1.66....... O2 suck.
It's about bloody time too - I just hope they actually keep to their word this time
Has anyone else confirmed this? I'll try give 'em a ring after work later.......£10 says they will tell me a different date!

At least they might understand you when you mention "ROM" or "Update" as they thought I wanted a new phone, even after explaining it in an email with links to HTC's ROM updates.
Are O2 usually so bad at releasing ROMs? I have personally never flashed one before, but i've waited, as you all have, ages for an official update.
Yeh they are
got the wrong thread a little...
I must be missing something here but.....who cares? I have an O2 Leo and the only time I would consider using an official O2 rom is if I was returning it for repair like I had to recently.

Well I would like to flash my first ROM, and preferably one I know for sure will work. So I am quietly optimistic about the new ROM and the features it will have on it. Otherwise I will probably sit with the one I have for a bit longer before considering using a cooked ROM.

Install HSPL and flash any rom you want. Providing you follow the instructions there is absolutely no need to use a network rom, none of them can hold a candle to a decent cooked rom. You will probably never see WM 6.5.5 on any official network rom yet there are various cooked roms that offer the opportunity to experience Windows Mobile and capacitive screens working reasonably well together for the first time. Xannytech's Evolution 1.4 which I'm using is just one of them.

I think you have been the catalyst in my trying a new ROM, I have HSPL installed now and I am going to have a look around for a ROM to suit me.
Oh and by the way, loving the avatar, Bill is a legend!
any more news on if this just mightbe genuine?
Good luck, t-mobile promissed us the same thing by the end of this month and we got given the original ROM (1.43) probably because they thought , nobody will know it's not an update
I thought sod it so flashed hardspl and then the official HTC rom (1.66), gone from rebooting the thing 5+ times a day to once every 3 days or so (which I can live with)
I doubt 1.72 .. It's incredibly frustrating dealing with them.

1st post - had to start somewhere...

1st post, 1st android - LOVE this forum!!
So, I managed to figure out how to root several weeks ago, mainly so I could wifi tether. Been waiting (and waiting... and waiting...) on Sprint to put Froyo out. Toyed with the idea of doing it myself, based on several threads in the xda forums, but just couldn't quite pull the trigger.
Finally took the plunge last week & also flashed my first custom ROM, Syndicate Frozen. Had a couple of 'Oh $hit' moments, but made it through and very glad I did. The speed increase is amazing!
Getting ready to try midNIGHT next... just for kicks.
Just had to say I couldn't have done it without all the awesome help from this forum. Just hope I'm able to contribute, someday...
Cheers!
I remember that from when I got my first Android, the HTC Hero. Such good times.
I am running Syndicate, too. It's my favorite ROM. MidNIGHT is a second, the only reasons I don't use it is because he uses the beta swype in his ROM (meaning you have to renew it every so often), and his rom doesn't support 1x/3G icons like syndicate's does. Though, I must say, MidNIGHT is VERY, VERY stable and will probably not force close ANYTHING you run on it. In other words, MidNIGHT is what stock should've been.
Glad you took the plunge and did it. Its definitely worth it isn't it. On on the latest bonsai rom and its awesome. The.main difference with this rom is you don't have to wipe all your data before you flash.the rom. It backs up all your data and restores it when you flash the rom so you don't have.to start from scratch

Ptfmedic did an awesome job in creating the most flexible and stable (with the BYOR edition) Rom I have ever seen to date, even spawning from the old Windows Mobile 6.1 days... ahhh...
Not to mention the dude has a heart of gold. If you do decide to flash one of his roms, be sure to read some of his blogs and if you feel it stir inside you, help out his cause.
Welcome. This forum is very arousing.
Tried to flash midNight BYOR, after using Odin to get back to a stock with root & CWM, but for some reason it kept failing. Something about couldn't open the zip. Going to try to download the Standard version; maybe the BYOR was corrupted during download.

Yeah, I did take the time to read through a few of his blogs. The Broken Heart one was gripping - will definitely make me think twice the next time I'm approached. The man definitely has a heart of gold & the patience of a saint. And he still takes the time to make great Rom's from what I hear. I should know here in the next hour or so - multiupload is slower than...
Guess I'm supposed to wait 5 minutes between posts...

Not to sound offensive or mean, but did you follow his instructions exactly as written on his Android Development page? When it comes to flashing roms (at least with the Epic) one minor mistake can be the difference between a perfect flash and a faulty one. I learned that the hard way -.-
Edit:
Oh and I forgot to mention, although it hasn't happened to me yet, i hear that bad flashes can occur; I.E., something went wrong in that instance alone, not necessarily the entire thing is debunk, but rather just that one time. Try it again and you might have better luck.
Cheers

Not sure why he did that either, but he's recently started using the stock swype we all paid for.
I have to second what you said. I came from a moment and the epic is a huge step up. I'm also running the syndicate rom as well and it sure is a speed demon. I am starting to get the hang of flashing now, though I probably go overboard when I do it. I usually end up flashing back to stock and then install cwm, then I go and flash the rom. This forum is outstanding too. The people here are (for the most part) intelligent and willing to help.

No offense taken at all. I'm definitely a noob, so I'd rather have someone point out the obvious than assume I knew what I was doing.
Tried it a couple ways. 1st time, I was already rooted with CW3.0.0.6 with flashed syndicate. Wiped davlic, cache, and user 3 times. Tried to install the BYOR version & got the error. 2nd time, I used Odin to get back to EB13 rooted with CW3, no other custom rom. Then tried install BYOR version again (after wiping 3x) and got same error.
Decided to Odin back again, EB13, root, CW3; wipe 3x & then installed the midNIGHT Standard & it worked like a charm. I've had bad file downloads from multiupload before, so I'm gonna pin the blame there for now.
Been exploring midNight this afternoon & like it so far. Figured I should give it a few days before I decide which to go with.

Any ROMs Available? Even OEM?

Are there any leads to a Samsung Focus flashable ROM yet? Even an OEM ROM? I'd really like to take my Focus back to 7004 and start over if possible.
Unfortunately, I tried to recover using Windows Phone Support Tool and it destroyed my ability to Unlock again. I was trying to revert back to my 7004 backup, but was not sure how to do it.
Now I'm concerned about not being able to get OEM or Chevron updates. That would bite!
I have been looking for a while, no luck
wish I had the knowledge to make a rom to backup 7004 before upgrading
hopefully some nice person will make a rom (preferably Rogers as less bloatware)
Don't expect a ROM for Focus anytime soon. There's simply no one working on it. I have a bricked device that needs a new ROM flash. Been waiting for months now!

I'm hoping there is someone quietly working on it without posting their progress so they are not bombarded with questions and questions about when it will be released.
Please don't take offense if you've already done this, but have you already tried the Windows Phone Support Tool to try to get it going again? From what I saw when I ran it, the tool has the ability to download updates, and MAYBE ROM parts? It's just a thought.
There is no Rom for the Focus, I dont recomend this phone. I got a mine almost 4 month ago and was loaded with another Rom, I wait for a Rom to appear and i lost my hope,, no one is interested on it. So I sell the phone to a very dumb guy. Just resell it.

Would that not make you the dumb one for buying a phone that didn't have a stock rom in the first place? As is stands I think the stock rom is more than smooth enough. Yes there are things lacking and not as many tweakable options as android, but it is still very usable. Just be patient, it will come eventually.
Nobody seems to realize the disasters of Android when they first came out. We are already far ahead with WP7 on a timescale point of view.
Nobody is dumb here, we all just have different expectations from our devices.
Also, along the lines of time frames, WP7 is also ahead of the iPhone when it was released. It too had it's headaches, and correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we get cut/paste faster? And MultiTasking will be here WAY faster than iPhone got it.
Just be patient, and give it a little time to mature. It's coming along quite nicely, especially lately. And the ATT feet dragging on the update? I'd much rather they took a little extra time than see a bunch of people in these threads with bricked phones, or upgrades that didn't work as planned. That can kill an OS. I think the first Feb update showed them they need to be cautious, and that's exactly what they are doing. No, I don't like to wait, I'm as impatient as the next guy, sometimes more, but it will be worth it in the long run.
UPDATE!
I was concerned that forcing the NoDo update and then using the Windows Recovery Tool had made my phone unable to receive the March NoDo update from ATT.
Well, I'm happy to say that I just plugged my phone in this morning, and I'm RIGHT NOW updating to the "Samsung update for Windows Phone".
WOOHOO!!!! I thought I was hosed...
Now, the question will be, Can I Unlock It? I doubt it, but at least I'm getting the actual Update from ATT. I'm hoping there is a firmware update included also. I'll let you know.

I did try to use the Windows Phone Support Tool, and even disected the code. It still needs signed FFUs from Microsoft to flash to the device. You can't just make it flash your custom ROMs.
It would really be awesome is someone was indeed working on a ROM for Focus right now, because then I would be able to bring my phone back to life. But unfortunately, I've been wating since february and it hasn't happened, and there have been people who have been waiting even longer.
I can't even sell the device to anyone because it doesn't even boot up. Its just a paperweight now. It was a bad decision to buy this phone. Should have gone with the Omnia 7 instead.

I dont understand why you are bashing this phone so badly. I moved from a fuze with win 6.5 plus. I loved the freedom i had with that phone. but, as with any rom and initial release of an op system. there will be bugs. there will be updates. This all takes time. I think this phone is awesome for now. Its very easy to use and is powerful and very fast. The wifi is much faster than what im used to. Just be patient there will be some great improvements to come for this.

See if it works for you.
Focus Rom
This maybe a true Focus Rom but the person who is saying it works has not or will not say how he used this rom. The upload tool included with the Rom does not work.
If it really does work why not just tell us what you used to flash the phone?
The other ROM 7004 included in the thread is a AT&T Demo ROM so don't use it.

I don't think so. On any of the claims.
He has clearly stated how he did it, the tool as well, but nobody actually verified. Unless someone actually tries those with a Focus, all rest are suppositions. Including mine.
So unless someone actually tries them, I have to say what the original poster (Chinese) said they are:
There are 3 roms posted there now:
-UCKC3
-UCKC3 mod/custom 7004 (no idea what that means)
-AT&T Demo
The last 2 have been posted by me in that order in the Focus UCKC3 rom thread.

I am not 100% sure but i believe he stated the tool worked for him. But I had already posted this comment.
I'm not here to say bad things, I just had not sean a coment on how he was able to use the ROM, and was hoping somebody would say how they did it. And yes he did.

New to the SGT world, lemme tell you what NOT to do if you got a Sprint SGT.

So i am a experience user with XDA for many years. I had a T-Mobile MDA, ATT Tilt, ATT Touch Pro 2, T-Mobile HD2, Sprint Evo...you get the idea. I went from WinMO 5.x to 6.x then to Android..blah blah blah...
Basically i thought i was bad ass, well i am not. I read and read and read then read some more. Found a SGT Sprint version for sale on craigslist for $120 plus a working phone trade. Gave him my old touch pro and $80 and i had a SGT with a 16gb card. Score, no need for 4g since i had tmobile.
I built up courage and flashed it. Did not know what the hell is a kernal. Found that out later. Found out that you flash roms onto the Sprint SGT you will loose GPS and or auto rotate functions. The Sprint SGT is a little different than the verizon version.
So i gave up flashing and went on the hunt to "fix" my SGT. Sprint stores are tools. They ask you 10000000000000 and then do nothing. They say they cant fix it. You need to get a new one exchanged out. BS. I called the 800 number on the back of the SGT and found out that my inservice date was Feb 11,2011 and i have almost 10 more months of warranty .YEAH.
Sent it to Samsung in texas takes them 6 working days to reflash the tab and get it packaged back out to me. Turn around time is about 2 1/2 weeks, shipping takes 3 business days each way.
Now i am not flashing roms or kernals. Although the roms were alot faster than stock and did more stuff, but i did loose GPS that is NOT reflashable at this point. Auto rotate on the other hand can be restored.
CLIFF NOTES: Dont flash roms onto your Sprint SGT if you value your GPS. It will take you 2-3 weeks to get it back from Samsung in Texas to reload the firmware.
WILL YOU DO IT AGAIN: Yes, when i know GPS will not be lost flash addict!!
Just don't flash a rom with a modem file and you're fine. The modem is out now for us to restore anyway.

oh i beg to differ my friend. those modem files dont work. tried everything and then some. from my experience.......i did the E24 flash, then OTA to E28. did the samsung flasher tool, hendall, odin, ect... modem.bins from everywhere i can find. figured how to load the drivers when i plugged into the pc. i spent hours doing it, then days, then sleepless nights, then falling asleep at the PC waiting it to flash. no gps resorted back to sending it to samsung. almost got desperate and wanted to bribe a sprint employee to swap it out for me....i have my limits hehehe....i get it back on monday per UPS
I have my Sprint tab and I have my GPS working after dozens of flashing.
I even installed Honeycomb for testing and returned back to Froyo.
You need a stock ROM and a modem.bin that manage both the cell connection and GPS.
I use for myself the DJ30 ROM with no GPS and the EA24 modem.bin
I use Odin to flash them, first the ROM and after that the modem, works flawlessly

N986U Downgrade to Last version of Andriod 10 AT&T USA Please !!!Very desperate !

I'm almost sure this has been asked before but I need to make sure. As 11 may as well have bricked my phone, This is for two Note20Ultra's Both have many many of the exact same issues. They are just unusable with 11.
Will explain if necessary
Is it possible to Downgrade from Android 11 to Android 10 ????
With an AT&T USA Locked boot-loader, Unlocked SIM.
Current AP : N986USQS1CTLB
Current CSC : N986UOYN1CTLB
Sammobile say's it can be done but I will loose some network functions. He didn't elaborate about just what I would loose.
I can't find anything here that states anything clearly.
I flashed firmware before, but things have changed for the worse sense then.
Greedy People Suck Ballz !
(Assdroid 11 is the whole ass, Hemiroid 10 was just a pain in the ass, but at least it worked.)

I flashed firmware before, but things have changed for the worse sense then.
Greedy People Suck Ballz !
(Assdroid 11 is the whole ass, Hemiroid 10 was just a pain in the ass, but at least it worked.)

I'm just seeing this, but because there's not been a revision to the bootloader with and. 11(looking at your build number ending in CTLB) the position of the number "1" just b-4 CTLB does indicate (and I concur with the tech advice Sammobile shared with you) that you absolutely and positively can revert back to a former build number that was written/coded for android 10.
And, yes, that same prior build you select will be inclusive of One UI 2.5.
In a nutshell, you are going to grab/seize the last build you ran on b-4 the switch/upgrade to 11. I personally like SamFrew because of their option to "test-drive" their "almost" premium download speeds for less than $3.00(USD) in a span of about 3 days, a "three-trial", if you will! Lol
But, no kidding the $3.00 gives you your 10 build d/l in less than 20 minutes, on average! Otherwise, SanFrew looks like Sammobile if you opt for the free membership. They'll say your build will arrive complete and intact sometime between tomorrow & St. Patrick's Day! Lol
You're probably already aware of this, but the free download speed offered up at both sites given the builds weight of 4.5 -5gb, is about 20 hours when you first click on it! I haven't heard of anyone ever riding it out to see if that's bs, and you actually get it faster, but either way it's good marketing! With your 10 build, you'll be using ONLY Odin 3.13.3b, aka Patched Odin, select CSC, NOT HomeCSC when loading your build instructions prior to flashing.
Be Sure To Remember because you're time traveling in reverse, it's a mandatory data wipe you'll perform on your device after your full back-up is complete! Right?!
E-Z, P-Z my friend...I've been pretty lucky and learned the f/w flashing process (using the Odin engine) right here, from these fine geeks, I mean fine folks (and our friends) at XDA Developers!
If SamFrew is new to you, no worries, as the name implies you're getting the identical OEM Samsung firmware you'd receive using Sammobile's site. I've been told these sites share servers, so your build arrives 100% authenticated (already CRC checked). So, you're left with extraction/unzipping the file, loading up the chosen files, and then my friend you are at
T-Minus 10....you are go for launch!
Hit me back, if anything needs clarifying, whatev?
c-ya & good luck to you on your journey!
Save your money and download Frija.
Samsung hasn't changed the bootloader, so you can go back to 10 pretty easy.
I believe BTK3 was the last Android 10 version for AT&T.

Frija has let me down many times I lost count! Lol
You wait the avg. 15-20 minutes, then the decryption starts(CRC check), and boom...CRC Check Failed, Download Firrmware Again, Yes/No? For me, and several others that's a NO THANKS! Oddly, it was the last "fail" with Frija, several of us at SamCentral(discord) and it was an Android 10 build we were seeking, right hand to God! For me, and others involved, it's the best$3.00 we ever spent!! Say No, to Frija, or if you're a fairly current Dell Desktop kicking it with it with Windows 10 Pro, you'll appreciate the detour I'm relaying to you!?
Frija's still too buggy for my taste, and I'm a "one & done" guy myself...I get on, get what I need to get, then get back to work!!
Good Luck my friend...let us know if we can assist further!

I've personally never had an issue with Frija.
Between my gigabit fiber connection and me usually doing downloads late at night, it's rare if I have to wait more than 10-15 minutes for it to complete and decrypt.
I've never tried SamFrew... I'll have to give them a try.
I personally use Samfw Tool to download fw. Either I use the actual samfw website. I like the app because I don't have to remind my Google account for faster dl speeds and reliability. A simple Google search will find it for you if you're interested.
Thank You ALL for your help, It will be a few days before I get the nerve and patients to try this.
I will most likely be contacting one of you if not all with more questions
But for now Thank You Very Very Much !!!

Yep, it's just one of those "to each his own" deals where our preferences help us navigate the digital jungle! My preference for current f/w jumps is the ole faithful, deprecated but not replicated, SamFirm. tbh
It's fortunate for him, they didn't bump the bootla

Your Welcome. I think the same thing happened to me in 2014-15? I reached out to these folks and they gave me a hand-up! I'm certain it was something to do with my Note 4, I think it was stuck in a bootloop? Two or three of them walked me through it, got my device up and running again! This all was going down around midnight, and I kinda knew what a "bricked" device meant and was sure mine was done!
Anyway, it's a tight crew here and I've definitely learned from them immensely. They'll give you some tough love too, that is they will tell you what not to do if you'll listen...I know I did and can't thank everyone enough!!
Be sure to check back in and let everyone know how you did or how you're doing. Good luck to you, and remember if you hit a snag it ain't nothing...hit 'em up!
